Thunderdome part II – Kvothe Vs. Aslan

So Kvothe is going up against Aslan right now in round two of the fantasy cage match on Suvudu. What’s surprising is that right now the votes are pretty much dead even. Half for Kvothe, half for the big cat himself.

I didn’t write up a little blurb for the last fight. But I’ve been driving a lot over these last couple days as I go from reading to reading. So I’ve had plenty of time to think about how the fight between Kvothe and Aslan would go.

So I wrote it up this morning and sent it off to Suvudu. If you wander over there, they should have it posted up pretty soon. I’m actually kinda proud of that little scene.

And for those of you wondering who did the cool picture of Kvothe they’re using over there on the site: it’s Kim Kinkaid over at Twirling Dragon. It’s one of my favorite pictures of Kvothe so far.

When Sarah saw it, she said. “Oh. He’s beautiful. No wonder Fela bought him a cloak….”

That’s all for now folks. I’ve got to get back on the road. See some of you tonight at Prince Books.

Pat's mentioned before how much he likes Jim Butcher's books; clearly it's just an homage/joke.

And the stressing of Kvothe being young is clearly NOT something deeper (why would an author reveal character secrets in an internet fantasy battle?), but just an effort on Pat's part to make sure we realise that this is "current"/At-the-end-of-his-story-in-the-Name-of-the-Wind Kvothe.

@Luke I think Inkeeper Kvothe is only like, 23-25 in tNotW? I may be making that up.

I'm thinking more like 17. Kicked out of the University at a younger age than most are let in, and all that. Late teens, anyhow.

Oh, right, Innkeeper Kvothe. Oops. So older, although I don't think we know yet how long his story is before he starts innkeeping.

Dear Pat. I've just come from suvudu and read a short comment about how badass Kvothe was in the short story the road to levenshire. Unfortunately, that made my long hidden craving to get my hands on book two rear it's ugly head. T.T

    @Rob

I read the same damn quote. I looked it up if I could buy the book that it's in "Subterranean's Dark Fantasy Tales" or something like that, and only one place had it on Amazon and it was $285. WTF?!? That's crazy expensive. I'm just a poor college student. :(

And to top it all off, before I read that comment I JUST finished reading The Name of the Wind for the second time. I was near frothing at the mouth when I saw on an earlier post by Pat that the Levenshire (spelling?) excerpt was direct from Book 2 (even if it was 3 years ago).

Any chance you'd be willing to write one for Kvothe vs. Dumbledore? Because Aslan was both touching and HILARIOUS!!

@ those interested in The Road to Levenshir, it is indeed in an anthology called Subterranean: Tales of Dark Fantasy (Edited by William Schafer). Amazon has it new from $89, and used from $85, but you might check your local library. My podunk town library had a copy on hand (not even checked out—score!), but if yours doesn't, they might be able to get it through interlibrary loan.

Anyway, it's a fantastic short story; I read it twice in one sitting. It was nice to get to know Kvothe a bit more, even though it is a darker side of him.

    Hey Pat!!
As long as we keep voting – and I know we will! – right now it looks like a match between Kvothe and Jamie Lannister!! (I would pay to see that fight!) If it does go down that way, please, Please, PLEASE will you write another senario???? I loved the last one, and GRRM might write another, too. I would just love to see what both you and he come up with!!

This is just total FUN! Really can't wait to see the outcome of the Jamie Lannister vs. Kvothe match.

And your write up of the Aslan fight was fantastic Pat!

the prediction written on the site was good. Pat, yours was clearly much better. Though I was terribly disturbed by a lot of the comments down below on the page. what is the matter with people?

Well done Pat, and may the best man win. or, you know, godkiller…

    Hi Anonymous,

(march 24 2010). Disagree with you about Ged. He did have to memorise names when he was young, but during the course of TWOE he began to have the power of a namer- he knows Ketch's ( yarrow; Minnow) true name when he meets her, though he is at that point not confident in his ability. But by the end of TWOE his powers mature and he is able to name the shadow ( GED).
however, it is useful to note that Ged gave up his abilities in the Dark loands, so is no longer to use True Names. Still, in the fifth book some remnant ability still seems to be there: he almopst guesses the true name of one of the other characters

You rocked the Aslan v Kvothe story. As a life long admirer of the Narnia Chronicles (reading with joy to my little daughter now – though editing the sexist and anti-school parts) I really appreciated your piece. Your first book is on the way to my door. Looking forward to it.

I like your scenario much better then the original one Pat.

The major problem with the scenario proposed by the site is that Kvothe would not be able to know Christ's true name… Revelation 19:12 His eyes were like a fiery flame, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knows but Himself.13He wore a robe stained with blood, and His name is called the Word of God.

So Christ's true name is one that only He knows, and it is by His other names and titles that we know Him now. (revelation also mentions Him giving each person their own tablet with a new name on it that no one knows but themselves btw)

It's interesting the kinds of things like this you find in the Bible when you look, most people don't know they're there.

I liked your write up much better than the Suduvu one. I don’t think they read past the name of the wind bit, since Kvothe obviously seems more about brightening up the world than destroying it just to give the finger to someone. Plus the way he won was monumentally stupid. (Everyone knows God has 42 names. ;p)

    Here’s to SOOON.
