Geeks Doing Good: News, Final Additions, and Cuteness

Well, we’re in the last couple days of our experimental fundraiser, and things are going remarkably well.

As I write this, we’re cresting over $80,000 dollars in our experimental mid-season fundraiser, and I couldn’t be happier. There have been a few bumps on the road, but so far everything has been going amazingly well.

Today we have several pieces of news, and a bunch of new items we’re throwing into the fundraiser.

Let’s lead off with the big news:

  • Signed copies of Slow Regard of Silent Things

Slow Regard - Front

We weren’t sure we’d be able to offer these, because I didn’t want to step on my publisher’s toes. But we just got the thumbs up to put them into the fundraiser.

Edit: To answer a question that’s come up a couple times: Yes, these will be first editions of the book.

1. Ordering the book here doesn’t mean you’ll get it sooner than anyone else. We’ll be shipping these out the day before publication, so the soonest they’ll arrive is on the pub date itself.

2. On the other hand, we will be printing some special foil stickers for the front of the book. They’ll say something like, “Patrick Rothfuss thinks I’m awesome.” or “Geeks doing good.”

3. There are two different options over in the IndieGoGo. The 45 dollar level is for folks in the US, the 65 dollar level is for international shipping.

4. I’m going to be completely honest with you. Odds are, you’ll be able to buy signed copies of the book cheaper cheaper than this.

Not only will I be doing a little tour when the book comes out, but there will be many stores with access to signed copies. You’ll probably be able to find a nice signed copy for yourself online for pretty close to the cover price of the book.

So why would you buy a copy from us here? Well… maybe you’ve got a thing for shiny stickers. Maybe seeing the donation total of the fundraiser rise makes joy well up in your chest. Maybe you’re hoping we hit some of our stretch goals (You’ll see those down in the blog later.)

Anyway. I wanted you to know this was an option now.

  • In other news, coloring.

A couple days ago, the I brought Oot over to the Worldbuilders office and we all took some time to appreciate the little things in life.

Specifically, we took our coloring book through some beta testing.

P1060866

It occurred to me that y’all haven’t actually seen very many pages from the coloring book. Allow me to fix that:

Princess Coloring Book 4

This one’s my personal favorite. I’m sure you can get the reference.

Princess Coloring Book 3

We are, in fact, all mad here. As you can see by some of the pages we colored.

20140709110640-Princess_Coloring_Pages

Kat did the one on the left. Brett and Maria did the one on the right. The middle picture is the same as the t-shirt:

Princess tee shirt image

That one Oot and I colored together. Looking at the picture, he said, “I think Mr. Whiffle is deciding to be a good guy.” So I wrote that in the corner and we both signed it.

Just for fun, we’ve thrown up these three colored pages up in the fundraiser too. We’re going to slide the other pages the team colored into the coloring books people order, just so you can feel better about your own ability to say within the lines.

If you get mine, I hope you put it on your fridge.

It was a lot of fun. If you’ve never been in a room full of adults coloring before, you honestly don’t know what you’re missing.

P1060838

It does help having at least one kid around, and someone with a monkey puppet, if you can find one.

P1060900

There was a surprising amount of competition, as well as a rather heated debate about what color the Doctor’s jacket should be.

Princess Coloring Book - Who

Since I was at Worldbuilders HQ with my boy, I decided to show him the Bast-Off cards we’re selling for the special edition of Rogues.  And, since we had the crayons out, I asked him if he’d like to draw a few as well.

He did.

Oot Bast 1 (3)

Just in case there was any doubt, mine is the one on the right. Oot’s Bast had a serious case of crazy arms, but Oot gave him a speech bubble to make up for it.

It was kinda nice to draw a few of these with my boy, as drawing next to Brett’s Illustrations has been a little… intimidating.

Bast Off 1 (13)

We’ve decided to throw these up in the IndieGoGo too, because some folks were asking if they could buy them through the fundraiser instead of the store. We put up a few of Oot’s attempts at Bast too. Just in case some of you are *really* into crayon.

A few other things we’ve put up in the last couple days:

  •  Kvothe’s court rings from Vintas, designed by Badali Jewelry

20140708112904-Edges-IndieGoGo_Size

I would like to point out that Badali actually went out of their way to make an iron ring. That’s not something that’s very easy to find….

  • More E’lir sets of Cealdish Currency

Elir Set Coins

I was hording a few, but the team encouraged me to give them up for the cause.

  • Copies of Unfettered, signed by several of the authors

20140709110524-Unfettered

  • Handcrafted Solid copper dice from Esoteric Garage.

20140709110539-Copper_Dice_in_Hand

  • Legend of Neil DVDs signed by Felicia Day, Tony Janning, and Sandeep Parikh.

20140710115609-Legend_of_Neil_Poster_and_DVD

There’s a bunch of other new stuff in there too: Alice in Wonderland cards, New Magnets, Badali’s new Dresden Files shield bracelet….

dresden's shield bracelet

(They’re so new, we’re only allowed to show you the teaser photos…)

Oh. I forgot, I wanted to show off another page of the calendar, too.

BelleCalendarPage

Honestly, there’s too much stuff to show you here. You should just go over there and look around….

We won’t be adding any more stuff to the fundraiser after today. So if you’ve been waiting to see the final goodies before you buy stuff, rest assured that this is the end of them.

Lastly, stretch goals.

On the reddit Q&A we did a couple days ago, I tricked Amanda into committing to getting the rest of the photo contest blogs up in a month if we hit 75K. And we did. So we will. Finally.

At $100,000 I’ll let go of a secret I’ve been holding for a while, and let y’all know the name of the world.

At $110,000 we’ll start including free stuff with some of the orders. Magnets. Bookplates. Coins.

After that, I’m not sure. I’ll do my best to think of something if we get that far.

Fundraiser ends at midnight on Monday the 14th. So if you want to get in on the action, make sure you get your order in.

Spread the word,

pat

I have to sell a kidney or my left eye.
Getting one of those Shield Bracelets would be awesome.

It looks like the draw off was a blast :)

Would it be kosher to scan the pictures in the Colouring book and print them out for personal use (and perhaps my 4 year old daughters) so I do not ruin the actual book?

Are the sign copies of The Slow Regard of Silent Things going to be First Edition, First Printing? That would definitely be worth a little extra.

I have the sudden urge to just go colouring now. Also can I just say the Oot has seriously awesome hair?

    • Posted July 12, 2014 at 12:45 PM | Permalink

I love his hair. He ends up a little irritated because everyone always thinks he’s a girl….

      • Posted July 12, 2014 at 3:37 PM | Permalink

My son was irritated about that, too. I asked him at some point if it was a bad thing that he was mistaken for a girl and he thought about it for a while (a couple of days, at least), then he told me it was OK because girls are awesome. He still corrects people, but he doesn’t get mad.

I had that same issue when I was a kid. It bothered me only because it seemed to bother all the adults. 38 years old now, and my hair is half way down my back.

I wanted long hair when I was a kid, but my dad always cut it extremely short. I wanted it to look like Link’s in Ocarina of Time. I eventually boycotted my dad and grew it out–turns out, I did NOT look good with long hair…

I feel kinda bad right now. I’ve ordered a “Princess Coloring Book” thinking that international shipping was covered in the price (I though you may had an special discount for being a charity) and now I’ve read that it *does* cost you between 15 and 25 extra dollars. I have put the rest of the money I could spend right now (7 more dollars apart from the 20 of the coloring book) into the wallpapers since those doesn’t give you any extra costs and it would be a cool thing to have, so I don’t have any money left to add to the extra shipping cost to Spain. Despite how cool it would be to have the book, I want to help to make the world a better place, not producing extra cost, so if bringing the book to me means you loosing money then it’s better that you keep the book and use it again for helping the world.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Yeah. I’d price it lower if it was my choice. But that’s the amount it was listed for in the kickstarter. So if we sold them for less than that, we’d kinda be screwing those people who jumped in early….

If it makes a difference, there will be posh food and drink, and I’m going to be giving the people who show up some of the coins I’ve horded….

Would copper be a particularly difficult name to find? It’s certainly not one of the ones mentioned to the students to try for.

        • Brady Dill
          Posted July 13, 2014 at 10:29 PM | Permalink

Copper is implied to have no name. The walls of Elodin’s cell, back when he was imprisoned in the Asylum, had copper veins. Copper knives are effective against the Faerie, according to Felurian. Also, in this blog ( https://blog.patrickrothfuss.com/2012/06/fan-coolness/ ), in which fans sent Pat a copper knife that they said “could be really useful if you wanted to kill a Namer”, Pat said “These guys have been reading the books really closely”.

And Tarbolin has a copper sword.

FWIW, Kvothe has a “ring which has no name”, which makes me wonder if he actually learns the Name of copper at some point.

            Posted July 15, 2014 at 2:04 AM | Permalink

My pet theory is that Kvothe actually Names copper himself. That copper has no Name and so Kvothe, in all his awesomeness, gives it one.

But this is probably not what happens.

    Hi Patrick,

I know this has little to do with anything, but since you read readers’ comments, I thought it the best way to communicate.

What would you say if someone told you they wanted to have a Name of the Wind themed wedding? Would you have any tips or ideas? ^^

My finacé and I met pretty much because of your book (he spoke to me only because he found out that I love the Kingkiller’s Chronicle), and I’ve been brainstorming about the best way not to have your run-of-the-mill ceremony and party, and of course this came to mind… I thought I’d ask on the off-chance you see this comment =)

And of course – thank you so much… your work is brilliant and inspirational, and on top of that it helped me meet the man of my life. What else is there to say? You are awesome, dear Pat. That’s all I got.

    My best wishes,
    Val

PS Can’t wait to read more about Auri!

    • Posted July 12, 2014 at 8:19 PM | Permalink

You sure you don’t want a Doors-Of-Stone themed wedding instead?

If you do that, the good part is that you get to plan every little detail so its absolutely perfect.

The downside is that you won’t be able to get married for years. Like, years and years and years. And everyone will constantly ask you, “When the hell are you getting married?” And you’ll be all like, “We’re working on it! These things take time!”

On second thought, that doesn’t sound like so much fun, does it?

      • Valkyrie-Dark
        Posted July 13, 2014 at 6:01 AM | Permalink

Haha well, we have not yet set a date, so who knows… But yes, years and years does sound like a long wait!

Are you saying that because something in Doors of Stone is more wedding-adaptable than the other books?

I’ve been joking around with a friend that I am more of a Kvoth (since I am a red-head) and he is more of a Dana (dark haired and mysterious), so maybe we could go for gender reversal… although I am not sure the family members would get behind that…

But I would like it to be something fun, with games and trivia and costumes, and not just a traditional sit down dinner with everyone slowly drifting off to sleep. Especially that all our friends are into fantasy, LARP and all things geek.

Thank you for your response =)

        • Posted July 13, 2014 at 6:13 PM | Permalink

I was mostly joking. I think NOTW would be a perfect theme….

    • Little My
      Posted July 13, 2014 at 4:51 AM | Permalink

You know, I’m sure readers of his blog would be willing to help you out. E.g., suppose you were trying to figure out the menu, you can just post in the comments, “What would be good on the menu at a NOTW-themed wedding?” and I bet you would get a ton of suggestions.

Don’t forget that cloaks need to be involved.

I think it might help to focus on a particular setting (or a couple of settings) in the book. Theatrical show? University? the Aeolian?

      • Valkyrie-Dark
        Posted July 13, 2014 at 6:07 AM | Permalink

It is pretty good idea, Little My. I should define the place first, and then menu and all other detail (because I think it will be in accordance with the place). Aeolian might be a good idea. University might be too vast, and I can’t think of other places that are recognizable as Name of the Wind, and not anything else.

If anyone has further suggestions, I am more than happy to hear! And thanks in advance =) It is very much appreciated. My fiancé just wants to be married to me, so he is not much for wedding ideas ^^ But I’d like it to be something truly memorable, even if it is cheesy and romantic.

        And cloaks are cool.

    • Posted July 15, 2014 at 2:42 PM | Permalink

LOL, just don’t let it turn out like the wedding at the Mauthen Farm and you should be cool.

All kidding aside, you should check out the rings in the Tinker’s Packs and Bedali. They have some great fantasy themed stuff.

The donation cannot be accepted because it is a duplicate.”
How can the donation be a duplicate if I couldn’t even finalize the first one?? T_T

I’ve tried purchasing other stuff in other websites with my credit card, and everything runs smoothly! (!!!!) Geezz… any tips guys?? What i’m I doing wrong?

    Dear Pat,
Just my humble opinion, but I don’t think it was necessary to add point #4 of your post. It’s nice for full disclosure and all, but ultimately the money goes to charity, and it never hurts to help those less fortunate.
With that being said, if you wanted to entice more people to grab copies through this fundraiser, couldn’t you just number the copies you sign? Instant limited fundraiser edition! If you really wanted to go all out, you could get a Worldbuilders rubber stamp (or book plate, etc) made to make put in each of the books as well! Also, sign me up for #1 of whatever!

    Thanks for listening,
    Tom

    • Posted July 14, 2014 at 1:19 PM | Permalink

That’s true. But I prefer to operate under a policy of full disclosure whenever possible. That way there’s less chance of people feeling like they were misled or misinformed in the future….

We are going to do a sticker for these books. That won’t be showing up anywhere else. So these *are* going to be a little different than the ones you’ll find elsewhere….

As a guy who has written a couple of (admittedly lousy and unpublished) books himself, it occurs to me (probably later than it should have) that between the need to introduce the various objects and entities we haven’t encountered in the books yet and which are depicted in the decks or referred to in blog posts, not to mention the difficulty of writing to a resolution of any multiple book series let alone one as detailed and massive as this one is, Doors of Stone is probably a bitch to write. I suspect it’s also going to be a huge book, just like Day Two was.

Yeah, that’s sounds like I’m sucking up, but it’s true.

On another note Ive just started reading TNotW again for the 6th time after reading the Bast novella. Its so good I just cant help but get excited!! Cue the string snapping scene and Felurain!

Also bring on November, I love Auri!
Dont suppose you want to hint at what its gonna be about? The tale of Auri until she meets Kvothe? I hope so!!

Keep it up Pat your such a hero!
