Suvudu cage match: Felurian…

So Suvudu is doing it’s yearly tournament of fictional characters, and in an interesting twist, they’re filling the entire bracket with female characters.

I was flattered to discover that they picked Felurian to fill one of the 32 slots.

Felurian

(Faboo Felurian Art by Craig Paton)

Felurian made it through the first round, and right now she’s battling Johanna Mason from the hunger games. And not that Johanna isn’t cool and all, but personally, I think Felurian has a bit of an edge in that particular fight.

If you like, you can read the way someone thought the fight would go and vote on who you think would win over here.

If Felurian pulls through, it looks like she’ll be going up against Sabriel in the next round.

If she makes it past that, I’m hoping Felurian faces off against Susan from Pratchett’s Discworld novels. That would be an interesting fight, as Susan has a sort of preternatual non-bullshit shield, and Felurian is, by her very nature, glamorous. (In all the different meanings of that word.) Though she has far more tricks up her sleeve than that.

My secret wish, deep in my heart of hearts, is that Felurian and Death both make it to the final round. I would write the hell out of that little scene.

If you want to see the whole bracket, you can head over here.

Later all,

pat

P.S. My event in Vienna filled up, so we added a second event that day. Details here.

I would love to see a Felurian vs. Granny Weatherwax. Not Nanny Ogg, because as much as I love Felurian, Nanny has a rounded corner – that’s better than an edge.

Sorry, Pat. Of course I love Felurian more, but in a fight against Johanna she is way in over her head. Crazy + Impulsive is just too much to beat…

Now, you know you left us all dying to read your Death x Felurian scene even if it doesnt happen. So why dont you find some reason to write it anyway? Say you are writting it for Gaiman’s birthday as a gift or something!

    Hopes & Cheers

Is it wrong of me to want to try to go to both Vienna events? I relish the thought of spending the majority of the day hanging around one of my all time favorite authors.

    • Posted March 11, 2015 at 9:39 AM | Permalink

I appreciate the impulse, but please don’t come to both events. The reason I’m scheduling a second one is so that I can make myself available to as many of my readers as possible. If a bunch of people decide to come twice it defeats the whole purpose.

      Thanks.

I think someone needs to remind them that if things dont go felurian’s way, she has some nasty Fae powers to get her what she wants

Yeah. I kinda suspect that the person who wrote up the profile on Suvudu might not have read the books. Or maybe they just missed that she’s an ancient, unspeakably powerful namer & glamourer, not just a sex kitten.

Or you can write the hell out of that little scene even though they dont make it to the final ?

Heart-breaking blog about an author’s experience of seeing boys excluded from the “girls books” that she writes and school visits that she makes- I love when Pat mentions his efforts to combat this sort of background sexism with his own kids. http://oinks.squeetus.com/2015/02/no-boys-allowed-school-visits-as-a-woman-writer.html

I looked at the website for fight and they actually predicted Johanna would win.. never laughed so hard.

Johanna’s victory, as predicted by this website, is based on her willpower to resist succumbing to Felruian’s power of seduction. When dealing with ancient members of the Fae, human willpower counts for absolutely fuckall. As there is no chance that Johanna has any skill in naming, the only conceivable outcome is her being sexed to insanity, just like countless people before her.

That website completely ignored all the other powers Felruian has besides driving men insane with desire..

I completely agree that Felurian would win, not only because of all the powers Suvudu ignored but because of the strength of her sexual allure. However, Kvothe *did* (not initially, but later) resist her. Through strength of will and setting himself in the Heart of Stone, he did overcome the seduction. Of course, Kvothe is an outlier, but he is still human–it is not completely inconceivable that Johanna could resist.

…and then Felurian would make a branch smash Johanna’s face into the back of her skull…

Tempi’s willpower counted for more than fuckall. Just sayin’…

I have a special place in my heart for both Sabriel and Death. I’d be sorry to see it happen, but I’m pretty sure Felurian could take Sabriel. Sabriel would put up a valiant fight though and I’d love to see that. Death… well, I dunno, I mean, Death is death. Unless Felurian’s just straight up immortal, then Death would probably take her.

It occurs to me that the way any one of her given opponents swing would have some bearing on the fight. Or should I say, outcome of the cagematch. Cuz if Felurian can just turn on the come-hither, then no fight, right?

      Posted March 11, 2015 at 8:22 PM | Permalink

Agree, Death is most OP character there, doesnt really seem fair to go against others. Then again, its not fair to put Felurian against other, but they fix that problem with reducing her to basically immortal whore.

Other things I didn’t consider: where is the cagematch held? Felurian’s powers would be considerably diminished outside of the Faen. She’d probably still be formidable, but many opponents would at least stand a chance if it’s not a home game for her. Also, is Felurian a Free Magic entity, or an unbound one? What if the cagematch took place in Lirael’s Death rivers? We’ll need good intel to vote accurately for that match.

Would’ve been cool to see Vi Sovari and Renna Tanner in that line up. Both would’ve kicked some serious ass. Bellatrix is the only other character I recognize there and the only one that poses a challenge to Death within that brackett in my opinion.

Well not really.. What spell can a Bellatrix cast to do any dmg to death? Like that guy said, its way to OP compared to other people, BUT books say Felurian is awesome namer, so who knows, maybe she knows name od death.. That way she can control and end her.

Okay scratch that. Just had a proper look. Some serious power houses there. But nothing Vi or Felurian couldn’t handle.

Felurian’s kicking Johanna’s ass at the moment. But damn, Sabriel…. that’s a tough matchup. She’s kinda built to take down supernatural entities, albeit dead ones.

Hi Patrick. I signed up to WordPress just to post to your site! But I wanted you to see something incredible I have found. This man sitting here alone on the stage with his guitar playing it so exquisitely and confident in his mastery… is precisely the imagery I had when I read about Kvothe earning his pipes!

Caesura……….The silence at the end of a line. Cae-sur-a………A silence of three parts. The frame story, a pause in the line, will in time play the sweet music that rests in Kvothe’s heart of hearts. If only Kote would ask Kvothe where he has hidden his alar…… … …..If only Bast would braid “REMEMBER” into his shoulder length hair to get his Reshi back. LOL
