Hey there everybody,
Before we do today’s blog, two quick notes:
First, a reminder that we’re running a t-shirt design contest in anticipation of the Geeks Doing Good fundraiser that we’re running in June. If you’re an arty type, we’d love to see what designs you could come up with. Then we’ll vote on them here in the blog, and the winners will become for-real t-shirts that people can buy for charity. (P.S. We’ll pay you, too.)
Fair warning: You have less than a week to submit your designs. If you want more details, you can check out this blog here. (Even if you don’t want details, you can still click the link. If nothing else, there’s a cute video of my kid there.)
Second, we set out our first activism newsletter. It doesn’t have many bells and whistles yet, but those are in development. I think the team did a nice job of providing some good news (with valuable context) for people who want to stay informed (but who are tired of being overwhelmed by getting their news on social media.) Even more importantly, we gave people some good, productive ways to take positive action and help make the world a better place.
We’ve got more than 4000 people signed up at this point. If you’d like to join us, here’s a link.
And now the new coolness:
* * *
Back on the second day of my first booksigning tour, I met a woman who had a tattoo of my signature on her arm.
“Wow,” I thought to myself. “That’s pretty nuts. I guess I’ll never see anything like that again.”
But, as with many things, I was completely wrong. And eventually assembled and shared an entire blog full of tattoos that people got based on my books.
Since then, whenever I see one of these appear on social media, a tuck it away in a folder to share with y’all later.
So here we go. Tattoo blog two:
I’ve seen more than a few of Auri’s brazen gear. That makes me happy.
I like the thought of two people with Fulcrum tattoos noticing each other and becoming friends….
I’m guessing this is the only one of these I’ll ever see. I’m glad they liked Bast’s Rhyme that much….
I’m fond of this quote. (And not just due to… umm… placement.)
There’s some truth in this one that I tend to forget all the time….
This is hardcore nerd. Is nerdcore a word. It should be. And this is it.
Clicking to embiggen is of the Lethani….
Sometimes I write something I’m very proud of. It’s hard to express how flattering it it when someone else likes it enough to put it on their skin, forever.
I like this version too. I’m a big fan of the less-is-more aesthetic.
I never expected to see one of these….
This seems to be one of my more popular quotes.
I’ve heard a lot of folks use it in their weddings…
I think this might be the only Amyr one I’ve seen…
Whoo boy. You better hope I wasn’t lying when I said what that translated into…
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a foreign translation tattoo before this one. Or one for this particular quote. I think it turned out lovely….
It reads, “Viajé, amé, perdí, confíe y me traicionaron.” (“I trouped, traveled, loved, lost, trusted and was betrayed.”)
I’m very fond of the Auri tattoos. She has a special place in my heart.
We’ll do some more of them in the next tattoo blog. I’m realizing now I have too many of these to include here…
And this is a good one to close on. It says a lot.
Thanks so much, everyone. You mean a lot to me.
One family,
pat

Those are all lovely. Someday, when I have more money, I have a plan for a quote tattoo that’s going to include one of the lines some of the people here have and one from Kushiel’s Dart. I’ve been itching for more work for awhile and it’s always nice to see what other people have done with things I’m interested in.
I have one with that!!!
My memory has tricked me – I remember the brazen gear being named “Brazen”, and entirely forgot it was “Fulcrum”. But once again, your naming seems to fit strangely well in languages beyond English. In Swedish, “ful” means ugly and “krum” means crooked – and I’ve met a fair few (pun unintended) people who thought of themselves that way, despite being beautful, because they were also broken.
Hi Pat! thanks for sharing this! love to see how people are really into your world. And thanks for thinking us as one family, it was really nice to read that!
Squee! Thanks for sharing my Auri quote tattoo, Pat! ❤ Totally made my morning.
@Erzberger, if you meant to ask me, instead of the post below mine, the very first Auri tattoo in the list is my tat. I got it several years ago in memory of the first cat I ever had, who I lost to cancer right before he turned thirteen, on what would have been his fourteenth birthday.
Just wanted to let you know I really loved the newsletter. It was a great summary, and I love the fact everything came with supporting links, from diverse sources.
Also planning a literary symbol quarter sleeve, and still trying to decide what elements from the Kingkiller universe will be included… Fulcrum is a must, and maybe a lute? Not sure yet.
Which one is yours?
I’m actually kinda surprised a huge nerd like yourself would have never run into nerdcore, which yes, is totally a word – though that isn’t what it means (it’s basically nerd rap, the term having been coined kinda-jokingly by MC Frontalot ages ago, but now it’s used by a decent number of other geekish-type music artists in a similar vein.)
I have one from years ago! How do I show you? Right, to facebook!
Wrong. I don’t interact with Facebook at all, just use it to post things. It’s too much of a shitshow over there.
You could hit me on twitter, or send me a message on the contact form on my website…
That “seen” tattoo is so simple and perfect; I’m sitting here crying and thinking I’ll definitely need to go get that soon.
That is my tattoo. Thank you so much!
The short version of the story behind it is this:
As a young teen I suffered from depression and was a cutter. It was a long time ago, and that was a different time in my life, but I still had a scar on mtnhand that I hated because it reminded me of that pain. I had thought of covering it with a tattoo for years, but nothing seemed to be right for the job, until I read that quote in NoTW. It was perfect, and I love it every time I look at it.
I love the individual stories behind people’s tattoos and this was a great one – thank you for sharing it! What a great tattoo, too
lovly tatoo! Could you fill in the context for me? I dont understand the reference and i am going to loose sleep
Pat, my family and I are renaissance faire workers. And we see ourselves as troopers, as K’vothe says we are just like everyone else except we don’t stay in one place and everyone hates us. However your depiction of the Ruh let’s us believe that somebody outside of ourselves understands is, for that I thank you
Absolutely love the tattoos, I’ve yet to get one myself but when I do it’ll either be fantasy themed like these or the names of my eventual children (which no matter what happens in life will always be your child, unlike some other names).
Also, I found this -http://fourcornersforge.com/caesura/, which will very much be in the Tinkers Packs at some point I assume?
Yup.
Well… I look forward to seeing if I can afford to put that
throughon my wall. Then less so, having to explain thedamagesexpense to my fiancée…Great tattoos, I would get one my self, but I’m just to big of a chicken.
These are extremely cool. Too bad for me they’ve triggered my OCD and google has failed me, so if somebody could please help me out here:
On the nerdcore picture, what does the tattoo between the Wheel of Time and the Deathly Hallows symbolize?
OK, 5 more minutes on google got it (it was actually my first guess but my first search for icons in that series didn’t turn it up, and I haven’t read it… yeah, I know…)
DAMN My ink made it onto this list! I’ve had so many more done since then (Mine is the 5th one down – “we are more than the parts that form us”) – but it was my first one, 4 years ago.
I’m actually planning to get another KKC tattoo done at some point in the future! But this is sweet.
A ‘conscript’ would be pretty awesome for the ‘nerdcore’. A conscript is the written counterpart to a ‘conlang.’ A tattoo in a conscript would be amazing!

Appreciate the recommendation. Will try it out.
This design is wicked! You certainly know how to keep a reader entertained.
Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Wonderful job.
I really enjoyed what you had to say, and
more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
Having read this I believed it was very enlightening.
I appreciate you taking the time and effort to put this short article together.
I once again find myself personally spending a lot of time both reading
and commenting. But so what, it was still worth it!
When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get three e-mails with the same comment.
Is there any way you can remove me from that service?
Many thanks!
Awesome looking tattoos! I have alwaaaaays wanted to get one myself, but just have to admit that I think I am going to regret it:/
These are extremely cool tattoos, I like all of them.
