Captain Joe discovered this youtube video just a while ago. It’s a video interview I did with my UK publishers back in January. I suspect that they released this video to help promote the release of the UK paperback, which came out over there in June.
Surprisingly, watching myself here doesn’t make me cringe hardly at all. I’m halfway articulate here, so I’m guessing that I managed to have a good strong cup of coffee before the interview started.
Share and enjoy,
pat

Seeing the magnificent beard in full colour, with interactive 3-D movement makes me wonder whatever happened to the Action Pat figurine. That would’ve been so damn marketable.>>It was the highlight of my week stumbling across this on the y-tube, as I’ve taken to calling it. Heh… apart from collegehumor and The Guild, this is the only thing worth watching on y-tube.>>Also, folks, check this out:>>http://zoomii.com/#>>Online virtual bookshop – search for Wise Man’s Fear and read the awesome sypnosis. Man, wish I could read it… right… … …>… … … now.>>Awesome,>>joe
Can’t wait to see the rest :D >Any other UK promotional stuff we should look out for?
dude the synopsis of Wise Man’s Fear is awesome.>Man i’m gonna have to go read NotW for a 2nd time this month now…
Ben, awesome is too light of a word for how awesome it is. We need a new word, a never-before-uttered-word – how about… <>bal<>awesome?>>It works. Sypnosis is balawesome.
So three minutes into the video I realize that I have been mesmerized by your beard and lulled by your voice without actually hearing what you’re saying… hahahah.>>But after a while it made sense. Totally understood the whole picking up a fantasy book and wondering if I have read it before, makes me realize how much I appretiate how different and interesting your story is, specially compared to a typical fantasy novel…>>This is torture. I can’t wait for Wise Man’s Fear.
You’re so adorable!
All hail the beard! The Beard is the Way!>>*Hides cult robes from Pat*>>Ahem. Very cool! I enjoyed watching the interview tremendously.
My friend says you need a comb or she hopes a dog bites your boy bits.
Pat, I almost feel as if I have known you for years. “Pat Rothfuss, yeah, we’re buds.”
Hey did i get somethign wrong here ?>I thought The wise mans fear will be released 2009.Now amazon says oktober 08.Please tell me amazon is right
All hail the beard! >You look thinner- are you getting enough ramen? (You have to nourish the beard!)>>What degree did you end up with? *shudders at the memory of babbling to a psychology major for an hour*>>Thank you, Captain Joe! That was so <>balawesome<>!
You should get your hands part 2-3 of this interview for us and post it. I don’t want to sign up for their stuff to get it. I get enough junk mail!
That was fun watching and to listen too. >I’m was also getting kind of jealous. My best friend and I are working on our own world for a while now (aprox 2 years now). I’m writing the story, he and I create a world (in every sense) and he comes up with the mythology. It’s hard, but cool in the same time. But when I hear you telling what your inspiration is… Man… I feel small.>But, nonetheless, I enjoyed the interview very much, thank you.>Oh, and yes, I agree with the guy/chick above me. It would be better if part 2 & 3 would be posted here. Though I can guess that would not be a very prudent thing to do. With them being your UK publisher and all…
Yup. Truly balawesome!
I signed up I’ll post links to the others if needed :) at least a currently located in UK fan like me can do :)
Wow, the pictures I’ve seen don’t do the beard justice. You have to see it in real interactive 3d to appreciate Pat’s manly facial growth.
The beard looks great. It has returned to its Walt Whitman stage and we’re all better off for it. Also, to the anonymous commenter who wanted Rothfuss’s ‘boy bits’ to be bitten by a dog: I hope your ear turns into your asshole and you shit all over your neck.
I’m, Reading it again…..again…>>Every time I read it there are tiny little questions that pop out. One day I will write them down and submit them to you Pat. Like the Cande-Battle with Fen. There was a much much easier way for Kvothe to win that, Did he not think of it? IDK. >>Every tim ei read it i formulate more for D&D in my brain. I have Ideas but I don’t want to step on your toes.
Next time you do an interview, right before the guy sits down, slip a little tiny bird figure into the beard and see if he notices. If you can get a remote controlled one, so much the better.
“Back stage pass” was a good way to describe the book. It definitely has that feel. Im sure pitching is a nightmare and dont look forward to it myself. I have a question. you said you have worked on the whole story for 14 years. In that time, what was the longest you spent without writing anything in the world of Kvothe? day, week, month, year? >>Jason>>p.s. – If i move to Wisconsin can you teach me hhow to grow a beard like that?
Love your interviews, as usual. >>I also want to let you know that I can’t send you an e-mail via the contact submit box for some reason. Please fix ;_;
Kevin is right, the submit message box will not allow messages to go out.
danna said: <>You’re so adorable!<>>>HAHAHHAHAHA… that deserves a Pat Point.>>Note to Pat: Rest assured, beard is more manly than adorable.
That was awesome. You remind me of my uncle. As a matter of fact, I’m going to start calling you Uncle Pat. It fits.
y’know, I was half expecting you to sound like some booming god.>>“BEHOLD MY BOOK AND TREMBLE, MORTAL”
ARGH! I get so anxious and jumpy waiting for a new blog entry!!>>And I can’t find a NOTW or Rothfuss forum ANYWHERE to pass the time.>>MAKE A FORUM, PAT!>>I beg of you>>*begging*
Captain joe, >Here’s to you, my good sir. >>I’ve been reading and checking up on this blog daily for the past i dont know how long. >>Up until now, i have not bothered to interact or comment myself. Thanks to you Joe, I am no longer content to just sitting here reading Pat’s lovely posts and comments by his legion of loyal fans. >>So from this point on, I’ll be making myself known. It’s nice to make your virtual acquaintance!>>coolbeans>>&& btw, that virtual bookshop is really kickass. >>>Thanks again, >>Wes
Count Wes, it is a pleasure. I formally extend greetings from this humble community of Rothfussians.>>As a new member, you are awarded 3 starter ‘Pat Points’, and should receive your complimentary lock of Official Beard in 3-10 working days.>>Awesome to make your acquaintance, dude. That virtual bookstore is the next best thing to actually being in a bookshop. It’s awesome.>>Stay out of trouble, mate,>>~~Joe
Ahhh, Sweet acceptance.>>It’s great to be a rothfussian, officially speaking. >>I have a shrine prepared for the lock of beard, with all the necessary materials; incense, sage, candles, etc. >>Pat Points>>ooooooooh>>just saying it makes me tremble.>>What a delicious concept. >What can do these Pat Points get me exactly?>>>Thanks again>>>Wes
Ah, Wes, to be young again…>>Pat Points were unwittingly suggested by an anonymous comment left oh so many blog post ago, and from there Sailor Matt awarded that guy a Pat Point for suggesting Pat Points, and then I awarded Matt half a dozen points for taking it one step further, and I think Marky took a further step, and we tried to bribe Angela with a bajillion Pat Points if she had proof that sexy-pillow fights do actually take place in the real world…>>Basically, the Pat Point system is a reputation/popularity matrix of untold power and wealth. Garner the points, my friend, and garner them well, for they represent your standing in the eyes of Action Pat.>>Yeah – it’s a piss-around, when you break it down.>>All the best,>>~Cap’n Joe
Some tool on youtube is saying that Pats borrowed heavily from LeGuin and McCaffrey. Tool.
“Some tool on youtube is saying that Pats borrowed heavily from LeGuin and McCaffrey. Tool.”>>Awwie! He’s just expressing his own opinion.>>Though I strongly disagree with it.>>Just thumbs him down!
thumbs down it is!>I’ve read the Authors he’s talking about and he’s totally full of it. He said “Younger fantasy fans don’t realize it but A LOT of Pat’s ideas in the book are clearly borrowed from LeGuin and McCaffrey”>THE GUYS 22!! hardly a huge amount of life experience there.>again with the TOOL!!
Well, at least its nice to see Pat has a whole legion of fans behind him!
That guy’s a whole toolbag – spanner and 1/4 wrench included. WTF, man, expressing ur op1nion on teh internet like that.>>Thumbs down hard, so hard…
“That guy’s a whole toolbag – spanner and 1/4 wrench included. WTF, man, expressing ur op1nion on teh internet like that.>>Thumbs down hard, so hard…”>>I’m starting to get a little freaked out… o_o>>Now I know to stay off of Pat’s fans’ bad sides! Jeepers.
Damn straight! If I had an opinion I’d well keep it to myself! TTTTTTOOOOOOLLLLLLL!!!!!
you mean besides expressing your opinion of his opinion?>>Anyways, anyone with half a brain knows Pat stole NOTW almost whole hog from Dr. Seuss’s Green eggs and ham. DUH!>>I just want to know why Kvothe calls himself “disater” in Sairu
That was the implied sarcasm kip. I’m off to vent my anger at T- in the park. Have a lovely weekend everyone. Even if you are a tool!
Have fun!
So, I have to ask. Why is glass and the way a river shapes the earth and stuff so significant with you? I’ve read Name of the Wind three times now and this interview only confirms your sort of fascination with the subject.>>Glass…hm
Thank Tehlu, you said the name outloud. Now all the people who I wanted to set on fire because English was their first language and they claimed to be unable to pronouce Kvothe or even Quothe properly can please die in the aforementioned fire.
