Happy Birthday French book!

Okay. Fine. It came out two days ago. Happy belated birthday. I’m a bad parent.

Personally, I dig the cover.

Speaking of languages I might understand, are you doing a Spanish edition??

First thought upon seeing the book cover: “Why would they name the vents?”

And I do have some rudimentary knowledge of French.

Even better thought: the vent had a nom? As in nom-nom?

    Woah…

I love this cover. Maybe even more than the Japanese cover. The scene in this one is like a visual orgasm, but the Japanese one had that badass-looking Draccus. Anyway, someone tell me: is that Tarbean he’s looking at?

As someone who had two years of High School French and an additional two years as an Undergrad, I will be tracking this one down to read it in my second tongue. The cover is amazing, much better than my U.S. stone-face edition.

Ha ha ha ha! I finally read a foreign cover. (Let’s pretend that it’s because I take French and not because most of the words are cognates) Amazing cover, Pat.

I may be the only one here, but I have to confess that I find the artwork to be just a little over-dramatic. That is, it doesn’t seem to capture the true nature of Kvothe. He doesn’t “overlook his city like watchful god, waiting to descend in glory.” [google “mall ninja” for the inspiration for that nugget…I promise, you’ll laugh] Rather, he straggles in amongst the press of humanity, indistinguishable except for his ridiculously red hair. Yet, by the sheer force of his ingenuity, over-confidence and, yes, skill, he carves out a space around himself that provokes either awe or enmity. There’s no middle ground, but there’s also no real intentionality in it. He’s definitely aware of his space, but not in the manner that the artwork would suggest…I’m struggling to put my finger on it here…probably cause I’m pounding this out in a hurry whilst simultaneously (pretending to be) working…

This would be really fun to explore. Too bad we don’t have a more congenial format in which to discuss it…

Anyway, just a comment on the French version, Pat: I think it will sell well. My French colleagues love to joke, “In France, the customer is king…but you know what we French do to kings.” (At this point, you have to imagine a frenchman drawing a single finger across his neck.) Thus, the king killer chronicles should pique some interest.

First of all I’d like to say that’s one awesome cover art!

Second I’d like to encourage all of you that got a translation in your native language, to read the book in English the first time. Because some times the “feeling might go away”.

I usually read it in English first time, but as this is a truly epic book, it’ll be read by me, once, twice and even thrice over again, and those time why not read it in a native language?^^

Charred body of God, Pat, how come all of the foreign editions get more epically awesome covers than ours? First Germany, and now France. Don’t be a terrorist, dude.

I mean, I dig Dark Mysterious Cloakey Back-Turned Staring-At-An-Acacia Chandrian(?)…but you can’t beat Rock Star Lute-Over-The-Shoulder Kvothe, looking over a cliff he plans to jump off all Selphie-style.

    You just can’t.

Definantly a cool cover. I like how Kvothe’s robe/cloak thing is flaping in the wind. Though if you think about it that would be a real hassle, having that thing drag behind you and snagging on stuff. But it’s still an awsome cover.

    Hello there,

My name is Stephane, Editorial Director of Bragelonne, Pat’s publisher in France. I’m absolutely delighted to read your comments. Over the moon. Marc Simonetti, the artist who did the art, and David Oghia, our art director who designed it, are too indeed. Thank you!!! :)
We’re very glad you seem to think we did justice to Pat’s fabulous novel.
To be fair I’d say that of course there are lots of wonderful US covers… and, Alexis, you might want to see more French covers. ;) Not to mention that sometimes UK covers are French-made (Scott Lynch’s or Joe Abercrombie’s for instance)…
Anyway, a thousand thanks to all of you for your support, and feel free to order the French edition. Candian online stores might be the most convenient way to do so from the US. http://www.amazon.ca or http://www.archambault.ca: http://www.archambault.ca/store/Product.asp?mscssid=&sku=002403447&type=5

I finished the English version of The Name of the Wind yesterday and I just went to La Fnac in Paris this afternoon and saw the book, but it is sold at the outrageous price of 30 euros… Very unusual, maybe because it comes with a hard cover and fantasy books usually don’t (but are instead cut into two volumes in a most intriguing French manner!). I am desperate for the second volume.

Personally I’m French and I don’t bother with buying French versions anymore. Buying books in French is no easy feat. First, we never have hardcover because the books would be too expensive. Usually what happens is that what you pay for a hardcover version in the US is what we pay for a paperback one, hence what you pay for a mass paperback version is what we pay for a paperback version. Furthermore unlike in the US where you can have huge discounts for new books, in France there is a law which limits discounts on books at 5% at ALL TIMES. So yeah, the cover is awesome, I actually like it better than the American one, but I got my copy more than a year ago for 6€ shipping fees included and I certainly don’t wanna spend another 30€ however awesome the book is, could buy a lot more books with this huge an amount.

@Brandy: ” Le Nom du Vent” is the exact translation of “The Name of the Wind” in French.

    Name: Nom
    Wind: Vent
    Of: Du [De+Le]

i don’t like all the english covers. i might think else about them if i didn’t see the german one first ^^° they’re not that bad :P
hm, maybe the first one was the best of all three variations. i think, the best are from germany and france. i bought the book in german, but i don’t like the translation. so, i want to buy it in english. the uk cover impressed me, but i wanted to read pat’s own words and not an BE translation^^. As i was searching for the us cover i was confused by all the cover versions and i found the french one (le nom du vent), too, which just let me think: damn! i can’t speak french..

you all are (with high possibility) owners of the us book and so i wanted to ask some question here:

how does the us book look without the dust jacket?

is the look/size different from the other versions?

i am not sure if we have the last cover version in hardcover here in germany, because amazon shows just the cover of fabio.
so, i might take the risk and buy this one if they are same-looking underneath :D

have anybody else an idea to solve my problem?

i ask my question here, because i don’t know where might be a better place to post them (and i don’t want to bother pat with such annoying questions..)

thx to all of you! :)
—————————————but if pat will read this anyway :

    dear pat,

you really touched my creative mind. in recent years i couldn’t see a blank sheet or a pencil. my school wasn’t really in art and let us concentrate on languages an science. but now i am a graduate and hope getting accepted at an art college. i want to draw the characters, i want to write. just what i like and not what others want from me to do or to be.
it wasn’t only your book, it was your story. in particular, your devotement/dedication (don’t know the right word :P) to your mother.
I read the book keeping this in my mind, feeling your love for fantastic worlds in every sentence.
(maybe i will be a book illustrater later, i wish there would be more covers drawn with love and by illustrators who know what they are drawing for, not such who never read the books. i like covers in olf-fashoined ways like the artwork of Trina Schart Hyman or Kinuko Y. Craft (“The Lady in the Meadow”) – awesome pieces!)

Thank you for easing my blockade.
