Signing in Iowa City

So a couple weeks ago, a scientist down in Iowa City asked if she could take a picture of my brain.

Apparently they’re doing research into what happens in creative people’s brains. They’re studying what goes on when we make thinkings. Or whatever. It’s science of some sort.

The important thing is that as an incentive for participating in this, they offered to give me a picture of my own brain.

So I agreed to do it. Partly because… y’know. Science. But mostly because I’m curious as to what my brain looks like. Plus, I’m hoping if something goes wrong with the MRI while they’re scanning me, I might develop superpowers.

The upshot is that I’m taking a quick trip to Iowa City next week.

Whenever I visit a city I’ve never been to before, I try to set up a reading so people in that part of the country have a chance to get their books signed.

Unfortunately, I only got the details of my Iowa City trip finalized today. (Wednesday the 13th.)  Since I’m going to be down there on the 21st, that means trying to set up a signing a week ahead of time.

As a rule, bookstores hate this. They want to set up signings months in advance. It gives them a chance to advertise, put up posters, order books. Stuff like that.

Still, I figured I’d try.

So this afternoon I did some googling. Then I called 4 different stores and talked to 10 different people. There was one store that did events, but they already had something planned Thursday night. Another store was too small. Another store only did signings for sport-related books. Another store just didn’t give a damn….

It’s hard setting these things up. When I call a bookstore to set up a signing, I’m effectively asking the manager if they’d like to do a whole lot of extra work. What’s more, even a well-advertised signing can get low attendance, and I was springing all this on them with barely a week’s notice.

What’s more, I’m a pretty new author. If you read fantasy, there’s a chance you might know who I am. But y’know…. a lot of people don’t read fantasy.

Given all this, it’s not surprising that I wasn’t having much luck finding a venue.

Still, who knows when I’m going to be in Iowa again? So I called one last bookstore: The Haunted Bookshop.

It was a shot in the dark, as I could see on their blog that they’re mostly a used bookstore.

But nobody knows the local book scene better than folks that work in a used bookstore. If they didn’t have any interest in doing a signing, I was hoping they could give me some advice as to where I might be able to find a space at short notice.

So I gave them a ring and told them pretty much what I’ve told you. I’m an author. Research. Picture of my brain. Hoping to find a place for a signing….

Them: Have you tried Prairie Lights?

Me: Yeah. They’re booked. (I was kinda proud of this pun.)

Them: If you do literary stuff there’s a local library with a meeting room you might be able to use…

Me: I’m not really literary.

Them: What did you say your name was?

The thing is, I hadn’t told them my name. I’d skipped it because nothing is more depressing to an author than calling a bookstore, giving your name, and having the person on the other end of the line have absolutely no idea who you are. This had already happened twice, at some of the other bookstores, and I wasn’t looking forward to having it happen a third time.

Me: My name’s Patrick Rothfuss. I only have two books out, and if you don’t read fantasy, there’s no reason that you’d ever have heard of me.

Them: I think you’ll have to do your signing here. Because if you don’t, one of my co-workers will cut my throat.

Me: I beg your pardon?

Them: Your first book is amazing.

Me: You know who I am? Thank god.

Them: What day are you thinking of?

Me: Thursday the 21st. I’m sorry it’s such short….

Them: We can do that. What time would you like to do it?

Me: Well, 7:00 tends to be good because then people can drive in from out of town. But I noticed your store normally closes at….

Them: We can stay open late. How much space do you need?

Me: Since we’re only setting it up a week ahead of time, I’m guessing we’ll only get 60-80…

Them: We’ll move some shit around.

Have I mentioned how much I love used book stores?

Anyway, the end of the story is that I’m going to be having a reading/signing at Haunted Bookshop in Iowa City on the 21st of April.

Here’s the facebook event, if you’re interested. Feel free to invite any of your friends you think might be interested.

I’ll do a reading mixed with some Q&A staring at 7:00. Then I’ll sign books until everyone is happy.

Seating will be limited, but you can show up early to claim a seat if you want. Plus, if you’re there early, you get to browse through the used books. If I can get there early that’s probably what I’m going to do.

In addition to copies of The Wise Man’s Fear. The store will also have hardcover copies of The Name of the Wind and The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle available.

You don’t need to buy a copy of my book to attend. (I know a lot of you already have your copies.) But I do encourage people to buy something at the hosting book store. It’s a nice way to thank them for giving me a venue to meet with y’all while I’m in town.

If you have questions, you can call the store at 319-337-2996.

We are setting this one up on terribly short notice. So if you know of anyone in the area that might be interested, I’d greatly appreciate it if you dropped them a link. It breaks my heart when I get e-mail that says, “I just missed you in [city]! When will you be back?” and I have to tell respond, “Maybe a year or two? Maybe never?”

Sorry to postpone the blog telling the story about the romance convention and my reading with Amber Benson. I needed to post this up first, given how little time we have to spread the word about the signing.

Stories soon,

pat

Okay, most bookstores you can assume there’s at least a passing interest in reading, amongst the staff, but it’s never guaranteed and the larger corporate chains you’re as likely to find it being people who just needed a job, any job. Used bookstore? Pretty much bibliophiles to a man (or woman), you’re there because you love books and want to make sure you know your stock inside an out, can answer any question a customer comes in with no matter how vague.

“Q&A staring at 7:00.” I hate to point out typo’s, but this one is kinda funny. I thought it was serious for a second, like in order to ask your question, you had to risk the wrath of the Rothfuss by staring deep into his eyes while you ask it. And only if your question is worthy will you be able to speak it…

I forget that you’re sort of new to the game as I’ve already had all my fantasy-reading friends read The Name Of The Wind and we all think its amaz-az-ing. So, everyone I know knows you… pretty sure everyone they know as well.

When I’m travelling to go shoot somewhere, I like to roadtrip it and keep a neat little list of places I hear about in each city. I love used bookstores and I love people who CARE, so if I should pass through Iowa City, I’ll be stopping in The Haunted Bookstore.

    This Blog made me happy!
Second hand bookstores can me magical, and obviously this one’s pretty cool too.

I don’t know if many authors would even think of an event in a non-chain store, let alone a second hand one! so much coolness.

Would love to be there myself – but long way from UK…
    hint hint :)

don’t need to say how good your books are – wouldn’t be on this blog otherwise.

Pat, I’m not sure what type of scan you’re getting done on your head, but if you can, get the full data. With the right tools you can turn it into a model, that you can then 3d-print out. Imagine having YOUR BRAIN 3d-printed. One of my friends did this. He whips it out at parties and starts talking to it.

Anyway. Thought this might be something you’re interested in.

    Mr. Rothfuss. Patrick. Pat.

What are the odds you would ever make the trip to Toronto, ON, Canada for anything?

An MRI? I hear they’re quite painless.

An Appendectomy? Only if you have an appendix still.

Perhaps an Oil, Lube & Filter at the my muffler place around the corner from me? I’ll even throw in some ,a href=”http://www.timhortons.com/ca/en/index.html”Tim Horton’s donuts. They’re kind of the King of Donuts here.

Anyway, I’m sure that I could get a few hundred Canadians out to one of your shindigs if you ever come up this way.

    Hi!

By the way, the MRI makes weird noises while you are in there. Nobody told me this. The first time I had one I started laughing a lot at the funky sounds and messed up the imaging until the technicians calmed me down with their astonished reactions.

I cannot tell you how incredibly excited I am that you are coming to Iowa. The short notice does not matter. I am changing my travel plans and not going home for Easter Thursday night–instead, I will be checking out what seems to be a pretty neat used bookstore and hoping to get my books signed. Thank you also for considering those who travel. I can’t wait!!!

I’m seriously counting on you getting super powers – unless they take away your good author super power. You’re gonna have to show us these awesome powers pretty much ASAP.

If maybe you want to pretend you didn’t have super powers so you could have a secret identity, you should at LEAST be ready to show us the picture of your brain.

You’re getting closer! According to Google Maps you’ll only be 9 hours and 10 minutes away from me this time…

Anyway, I sound a bit like a creepy stalker, but the point I was trying to make is that any time any “celebrity” I want to see is having an event within 10 hours of Arkansas, I consider it a small victory, because it brings me one step closer to the coveted easy 2 hour driving distance.

    Someday Rothfuss! SOMEDAY!

P.S. This is meant to be a “yay someone is doing something in ‘flyover country'” comment, not a “come to X not Y” comment. Even if you are only in Iowa because they’re taking pictures of your brain.

Yay, used book store! Have fun with your signing!

Also, have fun in the MRI! I’ve let myself be scanned 3 times for the doctoral thesis of one of my friends, and it’s awesome to look at your own brain. And the 3d-image they can make of your face and head is really cool!
Also, I think MRIs are almost musical. Kinda like electro/techno music…

Heh. You should make up your own ‘you may have heard of me’ intro like Kvothe has, to use when you contact bookstores and such. XD

Also, donno about anyone else, but when I had to get an MRI (to try and figure out why my back still hurt like hell almost a year after getting rear-ended by a semi – nothing awesome like brain scans and science), a combination of the droning noises, the cold, and the tight space put me to sleep. I dreamt I was in a stasis pod, on a thousand light-year journey to a space colony. I was pretty sad to wake up and find myself still on present-day Earth…

    I love you.

I’ve always hated when people use “highly” as an adjective for utterly nitpicky reasons. If, for example, you call something highly successful, is it successful in the air? No! Its success is great, impressive, etc., but it is not floating above the New York skyline.

Maybe I’m just returning to old quibbles because I can’t will myself into being in Iowa. Alas.

Going to try to make it to the signing. I live in Iowa City and though I get burned out on the place sometimes after so many years, this is about par for the course. It’s a town filled with nice, engaged people who generally will go out of their way for you. This shop, in particular, is run by younger, cool people. Not as “corporate” as Prairie Lights, say– which, btw, people go on and on and on about. It’s okay but not all that, IMO. That entire neighborhood by the Haunted Bookshop is awesome. Hamburg Inn, Devotay, Motley Cow, Oasis to eat; George’s and The Foxhead to drink. Enjoy!

sweet. I’ll try to drive up if I can.

I find that used bookstore workers typically read more, write more, and talk about reading and writing more than other bookstore workers.

especially bob from always buying books in Joplin who keeps this creepy mannequin in front. and his collection of globes.

Your post reminded me of an incongruous, but funny, story. So I thought I’d relate it here.

I had a buddy in Ohio who worked for an artist as his assistant for a while. His job description was basically to do whatever the guy wanted, within reason of course. So one day, they’re driving along the highway, and they spot this beat up mannequin sitting by the side of the road. So this artist pulls over and tells my buddy, “Go get it.” I can only imagine how embarrassing it must have been for him to drag this roadkill mannequin along the side of the road looking like he owned the thing. To this day, when I see weird shit along the highway I sometimes burst out laughing, thinking about that mannequin.

So the next time you see a mannequin, especially a creepy one. Think about hurling it from your car while you’re driving down the highway. It’ll put a smile on your face.

I live in San Francisco now, but for the first 22 years of my life I lived in Iowa City. I can tell you right now that you’re going to get an enthusiastic and warm reception there.

IC is very cool and has a pretty thriving nerd culture, thanks to the University of Iowa being in town. It’s like a little oasis for nerds and enthusiasts like myself, in a (mostly) barren Midwest.

In fact, having lived in both cities, I consider Iowa City a smaller, midwestern version of San Francisco. They have similar vibes.

    Enjoy yourself!

Pat, don’t count libraries out just because you’re not “literary” enough. I some of the Iowa City Public Library people and I’m sure they would have been really happy to have you (not that the Haunted Bookshop won’t be nice). In fact, the next time you need to set up a reading in an unfamiliar city you would probably have a good experience starting with calling the library, rather than googling up the bookstores. Even if they can’t host you they’ll know the local book scene and know who to point you to.

Full disclosure: I’m a public librarian in Dubuque, so I’m biased toward libraries. Speaking of Dubuque, if you ever want to do a reading here I know a good library that could probably offer you a venue . . . .

However, you may not want to even open the possibility of signed books for out-of-towners. So, before I go and call them to ask about an unusual hassle like that, would you give it a Y/N?

    Super lame.

However, having had way too many MRIs in my life, I have advice:
    – the inside totally looks like a Jeffries Tube. You can probably get away with yelling random Scotty-like things w/o being sent for a psych eval.
    – There is a lot of thunking. And beeping.
    – Depending on the software used to look at the images, you can use the mouse scroll button to go through each slice super fast and watch your eyeballs appear and disappear and it is trippy and AWESOME!

Yay! I live in Iowa City, and I am so excited for this signing. If your looking for a great place to eat, you should check out Hamburg Inn No.2. It’s a great local restaurant with tons of history, and it’s right across the street from the Haunted Bookstore.

I too live in Iowa City, and am also excited about the signing. I finished Name of the Wind yesterday and was looking for more about the 2nd book and stumbled across this blogpost coincidentally, so that’s some great synchronicity.

However, I’m going to have to disagree with sirefrosty up above me. Skip Hamburg Inn. So what if presidents eat there? It’s mediocre, generic diner food. The pieshakes are pretty decent though – whole slice of pie made into a milkshake – but even those aren’t amazing. Go instead to Oasis, which is right next door, and which has the best falafels and french fries in town, and there are at least six falafel places in the Iowa City/Coralville area. Or, if you really want American food, go to the Bluebird Diner, which is just around the corner. They have excellent meatloaf, red beans and rice, and ribs.

You should also go to a Java House while you’re here. They beat Starbucks any day of the week. It’s like they actually know what well-roasted coffee tastes like.

Thanks for the awesome signing, Pat! I’m super excited to show off my copy of Princess and Mr. Whiffle to all my friends! :)

Great signing, Pat! Thanks for taking time out of your schedule to meet some of your Midwest fans. Also…

Your beard is freakin’ awesome! Do you have to shape it that way, or is it naturally that amazing?
