Generally speaking, I assume that if you’re reading this blog, you’re a geek of some degree or other.
And if you’re a geek, I assume other things about you. I assume you’ve watched Star Trek. I assume you engage in some type of gaming, be it computer, board, or role.
I assume that you know who Dr. Who is. I assume you have a tiny shrine to Joss Whedon somewhere in your house.
And I assume you watch The Guild.
More importantly, I assume you know when a new season of The Guild has begun.
But just in case some of you aren’t entirely tuned into the geek allmind. I figure I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that season 5 is already upon us.
If you’re a fan, it would be a shame if you didn’t wander over and check it out…
If you’re *not* a fan… well… then I’m guessing there’s either something wrong with you, or you’ve simply never been exposed to it. And if the latter’s the case, it would be a shame if you didn’t give it a try…

In other, slightly surreal news, NPR recently posted the results of the poll where they asked folks to vote on what their favorite SF and Fantasy books of all time were.
The Kingkiller Chronicles came in #18 on the list.
Out of all SF and Fantasy books. Ever. #18.
Seriously.

Dude, That is awesome! #18. Wow.
I’m very impressed.
Gruff
That’s amazing! Congratulations!
I guess congratulations are in oder!
Nice list, although I have to say I Am Legend, by Richard Matheson Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman The Mistborn Series, by Brandon Sanderson are shamefully “low” on the list ;)
Heh I’ve never read the other two, but have to agree that Neverwhere is painfully low. I liked it much better than American Gods (not that AG isn’t great). I also liked Anansi Boys better than AG, and a search for it didn’t even show it on the list, did I mess it up, or is it really not there? :P
Anyway, congratulations, Pat! If it were my list you’d definitely make it to top 5. I would say #1, but on my top 5 there’d be pretty much a draw. :) (Besides, I wouldn’t want you to get cocky and forget us fans).
I had the same thought. I did enjoy The Mistborn Series, but I prefer other Brandon Sanderson books, like Elantris.
I haven’t read Neverwhere, but I think I’ll give it a try
Lol.. well i didnt really want to do work tonight anyway… Now I have hours and hours to watch!! :)
Wow, well done. I wonder what Pat of a few years ago before you got published would have said if you could go back and tell him you had written the 18th best fantasy/sci-fi book of all time. I suppose we’ll never know…
*TARDIS noise*
Ooo!
That is pretty amazing! Congradulations, Pat =) I work part time in an independant english bookstore in Lausanne, Switzerland. Whenever people come in asking for fantasy, I always recommend The Name of the Wind to them ^^
I was in Portland, OR, recently for a medical visit. My wife and I were at Powell’s, and I overheard a girl who appeared to be my oldest sons age (28) ask for a good fantasy book for her parents who had only read and loved LOTR in that genre. My ears perked up because I felt like the young girl was describing me! The clerk, without even hesitating, recommended The Kingkiller Chronicles. I made a note and then bought them upon returning home. I raced through them both quickly and am eagerly awaiting the 3rd. I raise a glass of Point to you, Patrick!
Dude…. 18! I feel like you should win a prize vacation or something – but then that might slow down your next book and I simply could not allow that….
There’s some seriously heavy handed big hitters on that list…but your spot is well deserved. There’s going to be a little grumbling about certain favorite authors and such but if it’s any consolation i’d put you a little higher still. Well done.
Its awesome how you got eighteenth place. Not bad for your first trilogy and all…
WOW! Congratulations!! :D That is quite absolutely awesome! (Can’t say that I didn’t expect it, but well :))
And concerning The Guild I must say, that I was a little disappointed by how the fifth season turned out so far…I LOVE The Guild and the characters are great as ever, but for me the entire Codex/Zaboo thingy just doesn’t work, it actually annoys me :/
Hey !
Concerning geeky stuff, has anyone seen this wonderfully made live action short film named Portal : No Escape ?
If you haven’t, you should.
And if you don’t know what Portal is, then your not a geek.
Sorry, I know reality is harsh sometimes :)
But don’t despair, you can obtain geek status pretty easily :
1. Watch everything Joss Whedon has ever made.
2. Play Portal.
3. Play Portal 2
4. Watch every single thing that has the name Felicia Day attached to it.
5. Watch every single thing that has the name Nathan Fillion attached to it.
6. Watch every single thing that has the name Neil Patrick Harris attached to it.
7. Return to #1
Why are you still reading this ? Start geeking. Now !
al360ex
According to this list the mother lode of all geekery Would be Dr. Horribles Sing-Along Blog? includes numbers 1,4,5,6. Now we need a way to sneak a portal gun into Dr. Horrible…
Maybe a modified Death Ray ? It would be the next logical step :
Freeze Ray > Death Ray > Portal Ray
Savage cabbage on making the list,
I class myself as a geek (I work with computers, I own more laptops and desktops than I do fingers, I even have a box for cables that no longer have a function but may be useful in the future – maybe after the zombie apocalypse ) – but I dont game and I’ve never watched the Guild.
Do I still count as a geek? My entire personality bubble may collapse if i’m not.
I’m kind of with you, Kismet. I’ve never watched the Guild. Although I always intend to because Felicia Day is full of spectacularity.
No worries. There are many flav0rs of geek.
I was mostly saying what my general assumptions about geekery are. Not that those were prerequisites for being part of the geek family.
I keep wanting to try The Guild, because like others I adore Felicia Day. (And does everybody love her on Eureka as much as I do? She is full of win.) But I have been told since I’ve never played WoW I won’t really understand it.
Is that true? I know a bit about gaming, but I don’t want to watch a program where all of the jokes go over my head…
I both watch the guild and play WoW, and I’ve read before that you supposedly can’t watch the guild without having done so – but I really don’t think that’s true. There are plenty of references in there, but the show doesn’t run on them :P
You should probably just try the first few episodes and see for yourself, but in my opinion the heaviest references they have to gaming are in the music video – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMrN3Rh55uM
Where they mention vent, and say /almost kiss. But there are things in there that I’ve never heard of either.
Does having gamed before help? Yes. Does it ruin it if you haven’t? I don’t think so.
I’ve never played WoW (or any online game) and I understand it just fine. I think it helps if you have some basic understanding of what the game is, or how the people who play it really get into it. Imo you don’t need anything more than that. And you may not even need that much.
Thanks! That’s all it takes to convince me. It doesn’t hurt that I’ve been being tempted for a really long time to give it a try. Looks like I know what I’ll be doing tonight!
I, too, have never played WoW. The closest I’ve ever come is watching the South Park episode based on the game. ’twas funny, that one.
The Guild is awesome in its own right. Felicia is a gem and the show is nicely addicting. If you haven’t seen the musical “promos”, Google up “Game On” and enjoy yourself.
Dear Pat, you don’t only have geeks among your blog readers, you also have persuaded girlfriends of adult geeks (mine like playing AoK and Magic a lot), like me! Your stories are much appreciated – not just by gamers and people following series a lot. Just saying =).
(Btw, I don’t think you should look at people as geeks or not geeks too often like that. Everybody is special.)
@mynightstar re: your last sentence…
Chuck Palahniuk would like a word with you.
Now wants a Doctor Who episode where 11 lands in Pat’s Town and has an adventure with Pat. Some terribly evil creature is trying to stop Pat from writing his trilogy and it’s up to Pat, Amy, and 11 to stop it. Fun on top of more fun.
And go, go, gadget guild!
Dearest Pat,
You’re adorable and I’m a huge fan (I voted for your at NPR) but it’s Doctor Who. DOCTOR. Not Dr.
-1 Geek Point for you. (But +418 Geek Points for making the NPR list.)
Kisses,
Urs
Well… if we want to get *technical* it should just be “The Doctor.”
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I restrained myself from making this comment, now I don’t have to :-)
And for double plus technicality, Doctor Who is also acceptable.
Only if in the form of a question…
“Who’s that?”
“The Doctor.”
“Doctor Who?”
“Exactly.”
Watched Star Trek – Check (Really liked the latest movie too)
Gamer – Check (WoW, Magic, xbox360, etc.)
Know Dr. Who – Check (Quite recently actually)
Shrine to Whedon – Semi-check (No shrine, but love his work)
Watch The Guild – Semi-check (Watched early seasons, need to catch up)
Congratulated Pat on the most EPIC debut to the SF/Fantasy genre – Check!!
Way to go Pat :) /Cheer /Clap
Thank you for the heads up Pat, just like you turned me onto Dr. Horrible I am now eager to watch season five which I have been chasing my tail waiting for months.
And I knew you would make the NPR list, your books are awesome.
Oh and Lev Grossman’s book did not even make the top 100.
/stick’s tongue out while saying ‘Neener, neener, neener.”
Why the hating on Lev Grossman? I think there’s probably a good amount of overlap between his fans and we fans over here. And some mutual respect between him and Pat. . .? Here’s what Pat said about Magicians. And I did once read that Lev said Pat “being a living god,” was getting a lot of love at a convention.
I quite liked The Magicians, and am really looking forward to reading The Magician King, as is my husband.
I did not like that book, and that is just my opinion, I found it highly over rated.
As far as the above post goes I was just teasing Pat over a conversation we had previously. Sort of a ‘just bustin his chops’ sort of post. No offense intended, I am after all entitled to my own opinion. However I still am thrilled that it did not even make the top 100.
“Shrine to Joss Whedon”? Really, Rothfuss? I know most of us like him, but a shrine is a little much. Especially since you have shown that you can tell stories in a way Whedon cannot. I felt that the Name of the Wind was more polished then most of Whedon work.
Congratulations, #18 is not bad at all.
Blasphemer!
I own all of the Firefly dvds. I think that might count as a shrine, since I haven’t bought a dvd in many years. Plus I own two Firefly t-shirts (gotta love Think Geek!).
Wow. I was going to congratulate you on #18 and leave it at that. But then I saw Wheel of Time at #12. So instead I have to comment on that too.
Pfeh!
Pfeh on that! Wheel of Time is OK, but not great, or even all that good, and definitely not #12.
I believe I saw in one of your previous posts that you’ve read the first book or two of it. Throughout the entire series, the only character worth reading about is Mat. Out of many many characters. There is only one that’s interesting. The rest are boring, predictable, and annoying. The main character gets out of every bad situation by pulling something that he had no idea he could do out of his butt. Something, I should add, that doesn’t even make any sense given the character development up to that point.
I approve of The Codex Alera Series, by Jim Butcher being on the list, but seeing as how it’s an infinitely more enjoyable read than Wheel of Boredom, it makes me wonder who all was voting on these things.
Anyways.
Congrats again on making it to #18 with your series.
Obviously, not enough people are reading you my dear! ;)
Actually, while I do watch The Guild (and also read the comics, don’t forget the published comics with original stories written by Felicia Day), I purposely try not to know when the new Season starts. Once I start watching, then I really need to watch the whole Season in one shot (much like a can of pringles, only one? I say thee nay!).
So, it is for reasons such as this that I have spent numerous hours on my Wish Lists so that the “recommended for you” option works with some usefulness. New Guild Season on DVD? I am recommended, I buy, I watch, and the universe is in a happy balance and Ms Day has more money to buy neat stuff and go to cool restaurants and then tweet about it. :)
I am so happy for you dude. This is an incredible honor. And well deserved. Congratulations.
So, yeah, I qualify for geekdom in all categories save one. I’ve never watched The Guild. Off to Netflix to get educated!
Oh, and Brent Spiner sent me a DM a couple of days ago. Just sayin’… I’m cool like that.
Cheers,
Casey
Lists like this shouldn’t include any books/series in the last ten years or ones that are not finished…and that’s not a knock against you Pat. I have no doubt years down the line your series will go down as one of the top 10 of all time but I think books that are fresh in peoples mind tend to get more votes. When AFI does thier top 100 movies I don’t think they include the most recent movies just as an example.
Granted, this is just my opinion and in my opinion there is no way Guide To The Galaxy should be over Dune.
Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is far more accessible. I, and many I know, have read that series and not Dune. Dune is a darker and more serious work, and takes a true fan of the style to really appreciate. Pretty much anyone will like Douglas Adams work…
I was 15 years old when I first read Dune and even though it was more serioues I didn’t find it any less accessible than Galaxy. Everyone is different but it’s not like Dune is Shakespear. If you haven’t read Dune, give it a try. It’s a stand alone novel that doesn’t need all the additional books though I enjoyed those as well.
I like Shakespeare. :o)
I haven’t read Dune because it’s not really my style. Just like (crime though I know it is) I haven’t read any GRR Martin or any of the Wheel of Time books. They’re not my flavor.
And that’s kind of my point. It’s not that Hitchiker’s is any better, it’s just that it appeals to a wider audience.
Congrats Pat. that is an amazing accomplishment for your first books. Especially since the trilogy is not even complete! (no pressure) You seem like a smart cookie and I think you will climb that ladder in future polls..
All of your assumptions are correct! I love how no one ever said the name of the most recent guest star on The Guild…Felicia Day just assumes (rightly so, I’m sure) that anyone watching The Guild knows who he is.
Congrats on being #18!
That’s because the episode with him in only came out today ;) but ye gods did The Guild just get 10% cooler.
wait, wait, you meant that they didn’t say his name on the -show- not on pat’s blog. Excuse me..
Yep, that’s what I meant. Sorry to be so cryptic. I didn’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen the episode yet!
star trek… check
gaming…. mmm not more than anybody else i think, semi-check
Who?
Joss Whedon???
The Guild?????
Yeah! I’m not a geek!!
Your audience is wider than you guessed i guess.
Assuming you don’t screw up book three, I can only imagine you’ll go up on the list as you become more widely read. The Lord of the Rings was my favorite series. Until I read yours.
i’m such a geek, my wife bought me a three-pack of pocket protectors. true story.
Oh my God! Look at some of the people you were placed higher than! Congratulations Pat!
You should be higher than 18!!! I recently purchased “The Name of the Wind” and “Wise Man’s fear”. They were so good I read both books in less than a week. One night while reading in bed my wife asked me if I liked it.
I closed the book while keeping my place with my fingers. I took a breath, looked at her and said, “It is great. I cannot put it down. The way he writes and the story he unfolds is just amazing. I am not actually reading a story as much as I am a part of it. I am living it and experiencing it as it happens. I am so totally focused and captivated that I can’t wait to turn the page and read what’s next. I just want to tune everything else out and just give him my complete, total, and undivided attention.
And then I realize……… it is too late. He already has it.”
My wife just stared at me and finally asked, is that written on the back of the book?” “No,” I said. “It is just how it feels.”
My wife said I should write that down and send to you so there it is.
Now looking back, it seems like a “catch-22”. I couldn’t wait to finish the books and now I can’t wait to get the next one. Which I’ll finish in a day or two and then beg for more……………
What this list tells me is that not nearly enough people have read The Malazan Book of the Fallen.
Congrats on on top 20!
I love The Guild, and for people with those type of tastes you really need to Google the Game of Thrones Paradoy on Youtube. If you are here you are a fanatasy nerd to some degree so you probably read or watched the TV. I don’t thing the guy is a pro so its not “Guild” level but it busted me up at times. (decided to not be lazy, link to first one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajMzpiyZ4GA) If you are a rabid fan of that series, you might get offended, if so, grow a sense of humor.
I had no idea what I was missing out on.
No. Idea…
Pat,
I am surprised attending the renaissance faire isn’t on your list of geekdom items. I had them all except The Guild BTW. So, I wonder what your thoughts on renaissance fairing is. Do you partake?
Thank you Pat, i haven´t known The Guild , so i clicked your link. The first thing I saw was NEIL GAIMAN with his wild tresses! I was amazed because I love Gaiman. What a weird coincidence to see Gaiman because of you, who seems (rightly) to be obsessed by him. The series is adorable for its caracters, hilerious for the geek jokes and ******* awesome for having a Neil Gaiman and a Nethan Fillion cameo. Thank you.
Greetings from Germany (and I´m really sorry for my bad english, I use to read a lot, but I´m pretty inexperienced in talking and writing)
Just finished a blinding marathon of both books, good sir – i am utterly enthralled, to say the least! Please continue to churn out the epicness, and take. your. time. True fans will thank you all the more for it.
I don’t know if you’re familiar with manga as an art form, but i came across something today that reminded me of certain underlying themes regarding Naming and other such Magic from your books: http://www.manga-access.com/manga/N/Nurarihyon_no_Mago/chapter/70/8. Can’t quite put my finger on the specifics, but it did stir in me a desire to pour through your two tomes again!
It is no fluke that the KingKiller chronicles are ranked #18 – congratulations, once again.
Pat, I am a huge fan etc. etc.
I just read NotW and WMF in 5 days. I lost a good deal of sleep, for good cause. Now, in withdrawals, I have come crawling to your blog just to get my fix of your witty blend of syntax and rhythm.
Just wanted to let you know I voted for you (and 9 of my other faves) and I am thrilled at your placement. I came late to the series, and it’s good to know that you are so well known and well appreciated.
I *cannot* believe you outranked Wheel of Time. Don’t take this the wrong way; I think you deserve it. But Wheel of Time … Wow. Nice.
You’re awesome, but you knew that. Keep Kvothe coming :)
Hey Patrick, it was suggested that I read your books by the boss so I will be picking your first one up ASAP. Thanks for The Guild love, we appreciate it!
