Want to know when the Spanish translation will be published? Check out the video below.
Don’t care about the Spanish pub date, but still want to see something kinda awesome? This video is also for you.
Don’t like awesome things? Then you, my friend, are reading the wrong blog….
Honestly, I’ll never get tired of seeing these foreign book trailers.
I’m considering watching this one again and again, so that when I get to Spain, I’ll be able to recite the whole thing. That will be the only Spanish I’ll be able to speak, so whenever someone asks me a question, I’ll just recite the whole thing to them, doing my best to mimic the narrator’s deep, dramatic voice….

Why doesn’t America have epic book trailers?
Seriously. These things are amazing. I much prefer that version of the cover art to ours.
america has book trailers…. they are just stupid and uncreative
I’ve read TNOTW in Spanish and TWMF in English (so I don’t have to wait so long!) and, although I think the translation is quite good, I much prefer the original…you always loose something in the translation.
Awww( and then some)… I’m wondering what we have to do to get a Greek book trailer (as if…) and most importantly, a Greek translation of the books (other than translating them myself, :-P)!!
My god, That man’s voice beat’s our voice over’s anyday
I´m hoping the German translation of the books is a good one. I bought the German version of The Name of the Wind for a friend of mine. I love the language of the books, but a bad or even only a careless translation can really destroy a book.
I´ve tried to tranlsate a page of the book into German once for fun, and man, I butchered it. I have no idea how these translators can do it in mere months and still capture the feel of the language and the story in the other language. Seems like an impossible task to me.
In my opinion the German translation of NOTW is quite good. Of cause there are always some subtle differences between the original and the translated version but that’s okay. Nothing that would keep you from enjoying the book.
Man, when I was living in Finland I found NOTW in english, I started to read it, but after a while I came again to Spain, so I read the hole book in spanish… and I can say that the translation is GREAT.
Well… the book is GREAT, hehe
Hahaha, I just imagined Pat in a restaurant in Spain…the waiter comes and asks what he would like to order…and Pat starts reciting…after 30 seconds the waiter leaves with a half bemused/half annoyed face…
That voice…wow…
What they say:
“You should leave, follow the wind. Don’t be afraid of the dangers on the way”
The man had disappeared, but not the myth. A musician, a beggar, a thief, a student, a wizard, a rover, a hero and a killer. Kvothe had erased his trail, and not even now that he has been found, not even now, when darkness invades all the corners of the world, is he willing to come back. But his story goes on, his adventure continues and Kvothe will keep on telling it to reveal the truth behind the legend. A Wise Man’s Fear, the second day in Kvothe’s story, the long-awaited sequel to The Name of the Wind
Sorry, English is not my first language, so it could have been said in prettier words, but that’s about it.
That was great, I thank you for translating, because the words were just as amazing as the trailer was.
And your words were pretty enough I thought :o)
Thanks. I’m glad you found it useful.
El español no es mi primer idioma. Su traducción es mejor que el mío.
(mejor que la mía)
The Italian release is scheduled 1st september. Though i really doubt we’ll get an advertisement video ad hoc.
Ehm, Pat, if you said to a waitress, repeating the commercial, “You should leave, follow the wind”….she would leave. And so your food. Really, gesture communication is fine!
I think they would be suitably impressed.
I’m spanish I’m reading again ‘The name of the wind’ in my holidays to be ready for ‘The Wise Man’s Fear’. I’m thinking in ask for more holidays the days november 3rd and 4th and read the book in these days and the weekend :-)
Thanks for the books Pat!
Regards!
Oh hey, is that Elodin at the beginning telling Kvothe to go follow the wind?
Anyways. Pat, should you ever get here to Spain we won’t care if you repeat these trailer’s words over and over again – we’ll be to awestruck watching you declaim them in a deep voice while you stroke your beard. (The beard-stroking part is important!)
=)
I remember the trailer they did for Name of the Wind, and this was equally as awesome :)
And here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNr3A4kGPzs
Did you go to the website? It’s kind of awesome – someone is summarizing some of your blogs and posting them for our Spanish-speaking friends, and posting a few of their own.
yeah! finally the translation… I can’t wait until november >_<
So in the Spanish version Kvothe has a LIGHTSABER? This is patently unfair to your English readers.
So.. awesome o__o At first I kinda laughed, but then it got epic…
Epic background music is epic.
I remember only one or two words of Spanish from high school, and that guy still makes me want to read the spanish versions! Better yet… does he read the spanish audio-books?
I have been hoping you came to Spain and now that you are coming I will be studying in Ireland… Sniff. Will you have it recorded?
By the way, you could start saying: “Me llamo Patrick Rothfuss. Quizá hayáis oído hablar de mí” (My name is Patrick Rothfuss. You [plural] may have heard of me). It would be epic to hear it in Spanish from you.
That would be epic xD
Yes! That would be the perfect opener in any language.
I have already seen the video, is epic. You can find it als0 in here http://lahistoriadekvothe.com/
When you will come to Spain and where? I heard you would come to Madrid (of course :D ) but do you know where will you go there? I can’t miss it.
I bought The Name of the Wind in Spanish and later in English because it was the best thing I had read since a few years. So I realiced that the Spanish translation was a very good one, but it lost some sentences since songs are difficult to translate, (Not tally a lot less) and some word plays like Alements. It is impossible to translate such a thing so they erased it from the book. But it was a very good translation, since sometimes, the translation of some books actually hurts too much to read them.
So I bought The Wise Man’s Fear in English and read it. Without words about it. I’ll need to buy it in Spanish since the awesomes of the books demands it. And if I can meet the autor and have my book signed from him would make things better.
You are right, the Spanish translation is awesome! I loved the part when Kvothe meets Schiem, the translator was really clever.
I ABSOLUTELY love the cover art for that version of the book. Is it partly because I’m also an avid Star Wars fan? Perhaps… but even if there was no Star Wars, that cover would still be awesome. I agree with what some of the other have said, they really need to make some epic book trailers here in America… who knows, it might inspire someone to want to make it a movie (hint-hint). :)
there are some fan made trailers mixing movies videos :D
I’m Mexican so I’m very interested in this. HOWEVER, being the huge Rothfuss fan I am, I simply had to buy The Wise Man’s Fear in English when it was released, and it’s become one of my favorite books. OBVIOUSLY. Now I’m very glad a bunch of other Mexican and Spanish-speaking people will be able to enjoy this work of art! =D
Unfortunately, in this country the most important trailers are for “Dancing with the Stars”.
I have to confess, six months ago I had never heard of Pat. I read a great deal, but I have a special use for books like “The Name of the Wind” and “The Wise Man’s Fear” and “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “Atlas Shrugged” and “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, or anything big and exciting. I exercise to them. I use unabridged Audible recordings on my Android and loose myself in a story to forget the pain. It works. I’m 65, strong and in perfect health thanks to hundreds of great books and lots of sweat on an elliptical machine.
Now, I’ll be waiting impatiently for the next Day of Kvothe. Until them, thanks to Pat, I’m beginning Jim Butcher.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Remember, they need to be big and exiting.
I’ll bet I’m not the only one who thought “The Thunder, The Flame, and the Broken Tree” when that tree got hit by lightning.
Ready Player One (go back a few blogs to see Pat’s take on it) is a decent size and an excellent read. The Dresden Files are some of my all time faves and should keep you busy a while. The Mistborn Trilogy is good and you have the bonus of a follow up book coming out later this year.
Amazing trailer. I wish that more Americans got excited enough over reading to make trailers like that. On a side note, I went into a used book store that just opened up today and got myself a 1st edition hardcover of Name of the Wind for $8. How is that for awesome?! Long live Rothfuss!
That was pretty goood! But when you say, “Me llamo es Patrick” you don’t need the “es.” Just “Me llamo Patrick.”
No, just that one speech, and this one explaining it.
Que?
I like when the lightning breaks open the tree.
The voice over sounds verrrry serious. Kinda threatening, I own the book but I suddenly felt compelled to buy it again!
The Wind is moving! Here come the Leaves. They look excited. Maybe they’re getting Chinese food. Oh crap, it’s a tree. Tree gets in a fight with Lightning and loses. Here’s a Mountain. Too bad Mountain, we’re going over you. Book! Storytime! Applejuice!
Dude that is so awesome! It makes me want to read it again… in English. In fact I might read them both again. Or listen to them. Yes, I have both. :)
Cheers,
Casey
I actually ordered The Name Of The Wind in spanish now. I´m trying to learn spanish and I´ve read the book so often in english that I should know it well enough to read it in a foreign language and get the gist of it.
And then I can say: Man, Patrick Rothfuss is one amazing dude. He taught me spanish without speaking a word of it himself…
Good luck, I hope you enjoy it
Love the trailer, esp. the Maedre reference. :)
You mean the Broken Tree and the Thunder both together? It should have make flames and it would have been complete :)
That video makes me happy. :) Don’t ya just love Spain?? My brother’s making a movie, he should repeat the trailer in Spanish – It’d be so much better. Although I don’t know how well it would go with zombies… ;)

Pas a pas, se va luenh.
Si es atal es atal.
I love how in scary movies, the person yells out “hello??”
As if the bad guy is gonna be like: “yeah, I’m in the kitchen, wanna sandwich?” :D
bahahaha. That was amazing.
You know the best part? Simply by the imagery, I knew exactly what he was quoting.
that was very interesting….. but i wonder what a japanese one would look like? :O
Spanish is such a pretty language. I don’t who that man is, but he can come sit on my dresser any day of the week!
The narrator’s voice is Miguel Ángel Jenner’s voice.
In Spain, he put the voice to Samuel L. Jackson and Jean Reno (and some others, too).
I can’t wait until november… Why, WHy, WHY I have to wait???
A typical spanish expression: “Me cago en la leche…”
I’m spanish and I got the English version anyways… I couldn’t wait ’til November!! But I’ve to admit that the trailer is great!
The first book also had an epic trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNr3A4kGPzs
Tanks for the info, i’ll be waiting for the 3th of november to buy TWMF.
I also wanted to know when will you come to Spain for a tour of signatures, I’d love to have my signed copy.
^_^
On a completely unrelated topic, Ready Player One was a FANTASTIC read. Thanks a ton for the recommendation.
Again – I listened to these as audiobooks. The narrator can make or break a book. When I first started The Name of the Wind I was a little concerned that the Nick Podehl sounded a young. I was quickly reassured. He is very good. The accents are very well done.
Any of you that are into audio books might remember Frank Muller. He did so many good books, but his claim to fame was Stephen King’s “Dark Tower” series. He did half of them. Frank was the most amazing reader. Often times you didn’t realize it was him because he had so many voices. He even made “A Tale of Two Cities” enjoyable. Unfortunately he was brain damaged in a motorcycle accident, losing his ability to speak. He eventually died from the injuries. I still occasionally listen to his work. He was the greatest.
But Nick is exceptional. I can’t wait for the next release. I know, Pat, Kvothe is your great life work. But you’re a young guy with a great talent and a great wisdom to instill in your characters and your young readers. We’ll be wanting a lot more.
Stephen King took so long with Dark Tower that some of his characters actually came out of the story and kicked him in his pants before then saving his life in the car accident.
I occasionally travel from Oklahoma and have meetings in Wisconsin Rapids, not far down the road. Don’t make me have to come and see you.
Man, why does the spanish version always have such amazing and bad-ass trailers? If they advertised books like that here in the states we might have a population with an average reading level higher than elementary school.
Pat’s first book is -everywhere- in Spain. I was there for five months, and it was in every bookstore and most Eroskis (you can buy -everything- there….like Wall-Mart in terms of selection, but with really really good quality). The only other authors I saw similar amounts of were Pratchett and Rowling.
That was SO FRIGGIN COOL. *__* My rusty high school Spanish allowed me to pick out “ladron” (thief) so I figured out around the halfway point, theyr’e going through the laundry list of things Kvothe has been called. And I roughly understood the end part was saying “the continuation/sequel of La Historia de Kvothe” (the way the voiceover guy said “Kvothhhhe” was so epic, somehow! XD). Seriously, what a gorgeous trailer. I wish American book trailers were half as cool! (so is it possible that good CG is cheaper in Spain? I wonder how much something like this would cost…)
Congrats! You did figure out what was going on
Umm CG is probably cheaper in the US, but we only get commercials for medications and insurance companies…
Hi I am spanish first of all sorry for my english does anybody know when is Patrick going to come to spain?
Russian. I want to hear Russian. Hardcore language for a hardcore book.
Tu amigo.
