Sharing is Caring: Garfunkel and Oates

A lot of times, I end up conflicted about the blog.

On one hand, I know most of you stop by the blog to read stuff that I write. Whether it be idle musings, furious rages, or my occasional foray into scientific inquiry. You don’t stop by here hoping that I’ll put up a link to something else.

My thought is, if you wanted to go somewhere else, you’d already be there.

On the other hand, if something brings me joy, I want to share it with people.

On the other other hand, I don’t want this blog to become an endless series of links. As if I’d suddenly become that uncle of yours that won’t stop forwarding you dirty jokes and videos of cats.

On yet another hand in this increasingly unanthropomorphic  metaphor, it’s way easier for me to post up a few links, rather than, say, write a thousand word blog. And it has the chance to make folks happy.

And then I’m left back where I started, still not sure how much or so often I should link to other stuff I think is cool.

What I typically do is ride the brake. I don’t post stuff up on here unless it’s so good I just can’t help myself.

That’s what I’m doing today. I’m sharing something that’s so good I just can’t help but bring it to you attention.

Ladies, gentlemen, and those of unaffiliated gender: I give you Garfunkel and Oates.

How much do I love them?

I love them so much that I’ve had one of their songs stuck in my head for four days now, and I don’t even care.

Which song? This song.

(It’s not entirely safe for work, by the way.)

I stumbled onto their stuff a couple months ago, and after watching a couple dozen youtube videos, I wandered over to CD Baby and bought their CD, All Over Your Face.

Okay. I’ll be honest. I bought ten copies of their CD, because I wanted to share the love with my friends.

Luckily, the CD was even better than I expected. That’s not always the case with some of the music you hear live or on youtube first. For example, I actually like Johnathan Coulton’s acoustic stuff on youtube better than the more polished, produced versions I’ve bought. Same thing with about half the Flight of the Conchords CD’s I’ve picked up.

But this CD was better than the stuff I’d already heard. I would have bought a hundred copies and given them away as Worldbuilders prizes, except I know someone’s sweet old grandma who wanted to support Heifer would have ended up listening to “Sex With Ducks” and having a heart attack.

Yeah. They have a song called “Sex With Ducks.” It’s one of the many reasons I love them.

Okay. One more video and then I’ll stop.

This one is actually a good representation of the production quality of the music on the CD. In fact, I’m pretty sure this version of the song is the same as what’s on the CD.

Okay. That’s enough, you can hunt down their other videos on your own. (Like “Gay Boyfriend” and “Pregnant Women Are Smug”)

Or, if you are a sensible person who likes cool things and likes to support artists, you’ll go and buy some of their music.

Lastly, the the true believers that read all the way to the bottom of the blog, a reminder that I’m going to be at the Fox Valley Book Festival this Thursday (April 12th.) Details, as always, are on the tour page.

Oh man, I love Garfunkel and Oates. By far one of my favorite Net-Bands. Their Hand Job, Bland Job song is great and a very well done video as well. I came across them a while back not long after i found Jon Lajoie. Great Blog, Love the shout-out for those that deserve it! That’s pretty awesome of you Sir Rothfuss!

I didn’t think I could love you any more. But now I do.

    Garfunkel and Oates are awesome.

Agreeance on FoTC being better on youtube etc. I have a CD burnt from a cassette tape, which I dubbed off the radio before they were making CDs – I would much rather listen to that (even with the bit where we had to turn over the tape) than one of their polished CDs…

Not usually an alert-to-typo commenter, but since it’s their name: Oates, not Oats.

Their name comes from Art Garfunkel and John Oates. Not just any old oats that you’d find in a grocery store or something.

        Thanks for sharing Pat!

Pat I couldn’t help but register an account to point you towards the incredible Bo Burnham. He has a very similar style, absolutely hilarious and mostly NSFW. But I’ve yet to find someone who doesn’t get a laugh out of him. So I hope you check him out. And great find Pat!

Didn’t that blond chick apear on ‘the Big Bang Theory’ once? You know, where she is one of Sheldons students and pummels him into ignoring his friends, games, books ect, so he can complete his theory?

Tx for the heads up about not being appropriate for the office btw. Good one.

Not sure about the blonde one, Vixen but I do know the other one was on scrubs for a number of episodes!

Kate Micucci is her name, and she’s done a few songs on her own, including the one that was in Scrubs. I was kind of surprised to see her on here because I wasn’t aware of G&O. Thanks Pat!

The dark headed one actually has a recurring role on Raising Hope. She runs a day care for wayward old people, animals, and children! She’s always been one of my favorite characters because she’s always singing. I never realized there was more! Thanks Pat.

Funny story for you … imagine a 16 year old boy in school band practice missing his cue to come in with the cymbals for a song … why? … he was reading (and hooked on) The Name of the Wind of course! :-)

My suggestion is just posting a blog every once in a while with a bunch of links to things you think are cool with a little (or long, it’s your blog) description for each one. Just wait until enough cool stuff accumulates to the point where you feel it’s justifiable to dump them all in a blog.

  13. Posted April 10, 2012 at 8:14 AM | Permalink

    Pat,

Can I just say that I had a blog and I know how much it sucks sometimes. I don’t envy you your career choice. I think writing is hard. Being creative is a pain in the ass some days. But your fans, myself very much included, love you for it.

If I had any advice, it’d be that you listen to your advice for your son, Be Happy. If you want to take a freaking night off do it man, you deserve it. And whenever you post a blog/new book/fart/attend a convention/grow a beard/play a mmorpg/…. you get the idea. We’ll be happy. Just remember that your sane fans know you aren’t a god. My happiness is separate from your own.

    Take Care
    The Stick

P.S. I read the letter from the “librarian” in the ranting email. I worked at game stop for a long time so I’m going to call up EA and tell them how the fuck to write Mass Effect 4. Seriously, some people don’t look past their own self interest.

Both of the girls are actresses that have been in a few things each. Its really cool to see them branching off and doing their own thing. Their songs are catchy and funny. Maybe these will be the songs to finally end my week long streak of having nothing but Dr. Horrible in my head! Thanks Pat!

How many hands does Patrick Rothfuss have? Hmm…

These peeps sounds pretty cool! Funny stuff, thanks for sharing. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with sharing cool stuff on your blog, a lot of people are following because they want to know more about you, and sharing stuff that you like will tell them what they want to know.

Riki Lindhome has a podcast she does regularly on the Nerdist website, in which she interviews people about how they’ve managed to survive and thrive in the entertainment industry. It’s called “Making It”. She even interviewed Kate Micucci once. Check it out. Riki has an adorable laugh.
Also, Kate was on Conan last week, I believe, and was excellent.
