GenCon Badge Giveaway, My Convention Schedule, and a Reading in Indianapolis…

Heya everybody.

Sorry I haven’t gotten around to posting up details about the TV deal yet.

(Oh yeah. For those of you who haven’t heard, there’s a TV deal.)

Things are still in very early stages, and a lot of the brief articles that are out there are only about 60% accurate.

I’m putting together an official announcement post that is full of all manner of True Facts ™. But it’s taking a while, and I have to run it by PR people. It’s taking a while.

So for now, some other news…

  • Gen Con Badge Giveaway

As you know, I’m going to be at GenCon next week.

What you might not know is that I’ve got two 4-day Gen Con badges to give away.

These were generously given to us by the Gen Con Writer’s Symposium, which is the group running all of the cool author panels at the con.

The great thing about the writing track is that most of their events are free. So getting a free badge means you can go to the con and soak up as much writing panel-ness as you’d like and it won’t cost you an extra nickel. If you go to the Writer’s Symposium website, you can see a full schedule of what sorts of things they’ve got going on.

And there’s a lot of other cool stuff you can do at the con, of course. You could take a whole day just browsing through the dealer’s room.

If you’d like a chance at winning one of these badges, just drop a comment down below. It should say, “I’d like a badge” along with…. um….

How about with your favorite quote from the book?

Make sure you have a current e-mail address listed in your profile, as that’s how we’ll end up contacting you.

Post a comment by Saturday at Midnight, CST. That’s when we’ll be picking the winners.

  • Cool Things at Gencon – Booth #661

So this year at Gencon, Worldbuilders will be having a booth. We’re sharing with Badali Jewelry  at booth #661.

266696_287860688003317_1310606195_o

(Look at us, being all fancy with our signage….)

This is a new thing for us, and we’ll be doing pretty much what you’d expect. I’ll be hanging out, signing books. And we’ll be selling some of the stuff that’s available in The Tinker’s Packs with the added bonus that you don’t have to pay for shipping.

And we’ll have other things too. Stuff we’re debuting at the convention. Stuff you can’t get in the store, at least not yet.

For example, we’ll be selling Boss Monster, a game by Brotherwise Games.

In this game, there are a bunch of hero cards that pay homage to characters from classic fantasy video games and/or literature.  In the prototype deck, there was a “Quothe Ladykiller, The Polymath” hero card.

BMA073_Quothe_Ladykiller,_the_Polymath

That’s actually how I first found out about this game. Someone sent me a link to a picture of this card. I was amused by it, and called them up to ask if they’d be willing to let us sell some for Worldbuilders. They agreed.

But here’s the thing, the Quothe card didn’t make it into the final game. It was just one of the prototypes.

But because they’re awesome, the guys over at Brotherwise made a special promotional card just for us. They printed 200 copies of the Quothe card so that we can use them as a special promotion when we sell our copies of the game.

So not only are these cards limited edition, but buying them from us is the only way to get them, and we’re debuting them at GenCon.

Right now, we’ll be making 50 of the decks available each day of the con. That way, while it’s still first-come first-serve, you have a chance of getting a deck even if you’re only coming on Saturday or Sunday.

And we’ll have other things too we’ll be launching at the con. Cool things. Trust me. Stop by.

(As always, all profits from The Tinker’s Packs go to Worldbuilders.)

  • My Schedule in Indy

Thursday, August 15th

12-1:45 Signing at the booth
2PM The Art of Storytelling – Moderator ICC Room 245
3PM Dynamic Characters ICC Room 245
5PM Literary Alchemy ICC Room 245

(Unfortunately, I’ve had to bail out of that last panel, as I need to get to my Reading/Signing event at the Central Library on time.)

Friday, August 16th

10:30-11:45 Signing at the booth
7:30-9PM – An Evening with Pat Rothfuss – ICC Room 243

Saturday, August 17th
12 NOON Reading ICC room 244
2:00 – 4:00 pm: True Dungeon
4-6 Signing at the booth

Sunday, August 18
11-1 Signing at the booth
2-4  Signing at the booth

  •  Getting Your Books Signed

Here’s the thing, GenCon doesn’t want us to have a huge line that will block traffic and people’s access to other booths.

So if you want to get something signed, you’ll need to swing by the booth to pick up a ticket. They’re free, but we’re using these to organize things. That way you don’t have to stand in line for an hour, and we don’t get in trouble with the con.

If you can’t get to the booth during one of my signing times, or your time slot is full when you try to get a ticket, I’ll be signing things at my “An Evening with Pat Rothfuss” panel on Friday at 7:30, as well as my off-site event at the Central Library (see below).

Both events will be nice, relaxing places to hang out, get stuff signed, and listen to me to me either rant or ramble, depending on my bloodsugar levels.

  • Library Reading in Indianapolis – With Goodies…

For those of you who aren’t really into the con scene, I’ll have my off-site reading and signing at the Central Library at 7:00 PM. I’ll be reading some stuff, answering questions, and signing books for everyone who’s interested.

Central Library – Clowes Auditorium
40 E St Clair St
Indianapolis, IN 46204
Facebook Event

Since we’re going to be in town running a booth at Gencon, we’re going to be supplying our own books for this event. And since we’ve got some *other* cool stuff with us for our booth, we’re thinking we could bring those things out to the library event as well.

But for logistical reasons, we can’t pack up our whole booth and bring it with us. We simply can’t bring *all* the t-shirts in *all* the sizes.

We will be bringing a selection of stuff, but if you’re coming to the library reading and there’s something in particular you’d like for us to bring, it might be best if you mention it down in the comments. We’ll do our very best to bring it along for you.

Please be clear and specific in your comment, lest we descend into madness. Something like this would be ideal:

“Could you pleas bring a woman’s L Greysdale Mead shirt, a copy of Unfettered, and Denna’s Ring in a 6.5 with the antiqued finish. My name is Laurie.”

I’ll be seeing you soon….

Whin looked over at the bed, panic in his eyes. “I’ll fall,” he said softly, his voice somewhere between horror and embarrassment.

My favorite part of any of your books. The keyword being embarrassment, which is something a lot of people forget about when it comes to writing and/or discussing people dealing with any sort of mental illness. The embarrassment.

This will be my first Con ever and also my first time getting a book signed (So excited it will be You Mr. Patrick).. Anyway, I ask because I already have my ticket for the 4-day.. It seems unseemly to participate if I already have my ticket and someone else doesn’t :/

The Badge is your ticket into the Convention Hall. They are one and the same.

That being said, I also would love a badge! It wouldn’t be for me, but I know my girlfriend’s little brother would be absolutely thrilled if he was able to attend the Con!

And while I don’t have the book in front of me, my favorite part by far was the crowd’s reaction and Kvothe’s thought process during and after his performance of ‘The Lay of Sir Savien Traliard.’

When my wife sees that and four decks of geek-juice-pimpin’ playing cards she’s going to shit, so just think about maybe tossing me a jot or somethin’. Not a talon, just a jot. And my favorite quote is easy. Its the whole reason I read the book in the first place.

“I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. You may have heard of me.”

Picking a favorite quote from your books is… Difficult, to be put it lightly. There are so many, and a favorite can, at any given time, depend on the situation. So I’ll just go with one that, alas, fits me more often than not.

“I had talked to much. I had said too little.”

      Posted August 8, 2013 at 11:03 PM | Permalink

Oh! And another favorite of mine:

“May I ask a question, Reshi?”
      “Always, Bast.”
      “A troublesome question?”
“Those tend to be the only worthwhile kind.”

Well, this badge is pretty much going to decide whether I go to GenCon or not :P So you could say that I want one. My favorite quothe*, you ask? To be honest, it’s Kvothe’s signature line / introduction:

“I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

You may have heard of me. ”

It’s powerful, it’s grabbing, it’s arrogant (but justifiably so, which is a trait I aspire to…), and it’s also the quote that hooked me up on the book.

    * See what I did there?

I’d like a badge. Okay, no, I would love to have a badge. Erm, I would give anything to meet the Master Namer. Am I overdoing it? I’ll just go ahead and post my quote, I mean favorite quote… I’m already getting nervous just thinking about all this.

Okay, yeah, I chose a huge quote, but I could not have done otherwise. This quote was… just… It made me take a moment away from the book, just really think about it, for at least five minutes, because, Patrick Rothfuss, sir, I don’t know how you could put things that were rambling around in my mind in words:

‘In the Theophany, Teccam writes of secrets, calling them painful treasures of the mind. He explains what most people think of as secrets are really nothing of the sort. Mysteries, for example, are not secrets. Neither are little-known facts or forgotten truths. A secret, Teccam explains, is true knowledge actively concealed.
Philosophers have quibbled over his definition for centuries. They point out the logical problems with it, the loopholes, the exceptions. But in all this time none of them has managed to come up with a better definition. That, perhaps, tells us more than all the quibbling combined.
In a later chapter, less argued over and less well-known, Teccam explains that there are two types of secrets. There are secrets of the mouth and secrets of the heart.
Most secrets are secrets of the mouth. Gossip shared and small scandals whispered. These secrets long to be let loose upon the world. A secret ot the mouth is like a stone in your boot. At first your barley aware of it. Then it grows irritating, then intolerable. Secrets of the mouth grow larger the longer you keep them, swelling until the press against your lips. They fight to be let free.
Secrets of the heart are different. They are private and painful, and we want nothing more than to hide them from the world. They don not swell and press against the mouth. They live in the heart, and the longer they are kept, the heavier they become.
Teccam claims it is better to have a mouthful of poison than a secret of the heart. Any fool will spit out the poison, he says, but we hoard these painful treasures. We swallow hard against time every day, forcing them deep inside us. There they sit, growing heavier, festering. Given enough time, they cannot help but crush the heart that holds them.
Modern philosophers scorn Teccam, but they are vultures picking at the bones of a giant. Quibble all you like, Teccam understood the shape of the world.”

Even if I’m not picked, I just need to thank you for letting the world see that quote. I can’t… It is just amazingly wonderful.

Finally, maybe this is of no matter, but I would like to meet the man that was able to do this… To touch my soul like this.

Oh god, that is cheezy. I’m going to go hide now under the earth now, thanks!

Okay, I have been “philosophical” with my friends yesterday because of this quote. You know, one of those days when you’re out drinking and you’re trying to make someone spill their “secrets”? I didn’t say it word-for-word since I didn’t bring my copy. But I told them a paraphrase of this quote. I told them the two kinds of secrets, secrets of the mouth and secrets of the heart, and that they wouldn’t want any secrets of the heart, for they only get heavier with time, and “crush the heart that holds them”. I bagged some interesting gossip that night. ^_^

I’d like a badge so i can meet the man who is responsible for me and my girlfriend getting together. I was listening to the audio book of name of the wind and my now girlfriend who works at a pizza place asked what i was listening to and i told her, it turns out it’s her favorite book series too! not long after that we went out and now we are totally in love and we owe it to you! we quote your book to each other and we buy each other three things and make up funny and cute things about them. Sir i owe you more than i could ever repay but shaking your hand would be an honor.

“I have an apple that thinks its a pear. And a bun that thinks it’s a cat. And a lettuce that thinks its a lettuce.”
    “It’s a clever lettuce, then.”
“Hardly,” she said with a delicate snort. “Why would anything clever think it’s a lettuce?”
“Even if it is a lettuce?” I asked.
“Especially then,” she said. “Bad enough to be a lettuce. How awful to think you are a lettuce too.”

I have no need of a badge because I live in Pennsylvania, but I enjoyed reading all the different quotes that people took note of in the Name of the Wind. I just finished my first reread of both books in just over a week, I devour them just as quickly as the first time I’d read them. I love every quote posted and a thousand more besides, but for some reason if I had to choose I’d go with: “You do not know the first note of the music that moves me.” Simply, I like Bast and his mystery. I hope we learn more about him but not very much. I hope we never learn the first note of the music that moves him. I hope he keeps that for himself.

Really looking forward to the information on your TV Deal.

Also, I enjoyed your story from Unfettered. Don’t think I mentioned that yet. My first read was a bit choppy and I didn’t “get” it but I’ve read it about 10 times now and I feel like everytime I read it, I get more out of it and it just turns my wheels, as all your writing does. Also, it does work great as a read a loud, I actually like it better that way because I take more time with the punctuation and it just packs more punch. One question I did have, the way it’s written, with the spacing and whatnot, is that a certain type of writing? Did you intentionally write it like that or was that added in editing? Anyway, I figured if it was a specific writing style I’d like to look it up and learn a little more about it so I can get the full affect of the story.

Yah…okay…that was long, and rambly, but whatever.

My husband happens to have next Friday off (and might be convinced to take Thursday off too). How cool would it be to surprise him with plans to go to GenCon?!?!

I have so many favorite quotes, but this one really stuck with me because it was so damn funny:

“I hate mutton, Reshi. It tastes like wet mittens.”

I laughed out loud. At one point, I told my sister-in-law about it. She told me that it made more sense that way. She had read it as “It tastes like wet kittens.” I love the humor in you books – it’s fabulous.

Another quote that stuck with me was:

“Perhaps the greatest faculty our mind possesses is the ability to cope with pain.”

There are so many profound statements in your books. You are a great author. One of my favorites! I humbly request that you find it in your heart to bestow a free badge to an old classmate that you haven’t seen in decades. Pretty please?

“He was just a child, after all, and had yet to learn what sorrow really was.”

As a woman of a certain age this rang with such truth…

And I would love a badge, even though I probably can only make Friday as my employer cut back on PTO for August.

I’d like a badge for my sister-in-law who teaches a writing class at a university in Indianapolis, loves Joss Whedon, and will no doubt be attending Gen-con. Inexplicably, despite my highest recommendation, she has not read your fine work. A badge would obligate her to read the books and perhaps introduce them to her aspiring writers.

“You fall asleep during your watch, you get left behind. You eat with us, whatever my wife cooks. You complain, you get left behind. You walk to slow, you get left behind. You bother the girl….” He ran a hand through his thick dark beard. “Bad things happen.”

If you are the police then where are your badges?
Honestly, I just wanted to say thanks for the books. However, I just asked the misses ,”If I won free tickets to GenCon could I go?”. She asked when it was. “It’s on my birthday as it were”, I replied. “Then yes.”, she answered on a whim. And here I am milling about for a bloody quote. My wife and I read the books aloud together. I picked this quote for the memory of us laughing hysterically late night in bed. It was the type of laughter which makes you snort, drool, and read in a high falsetto for the next few lines. “Once: nothing. Twice:Nothing. Then he turned it the third time and….the boy’s ass fell off.” Delightful timing.

I’d like a badge please. One of my favorite quotes is:

“Owls are wise. They are careful and patient. Wisdom precludes boldness. That is why owls make poor heroes.”

    I’d like a badge, please.

“I remember reading along, coming in on the secondary parts. My father would encourage me to try particularly good sections myself, and I learned to love the feel of good words.”

That was pretty much how I fell in love with books too! Just substitute father for mother.

I’d like a badge … “I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make minstrels weep. You may have heard of me.”

I can’t go, so no badge for me. What a great time I’ve had reading everyones’ favorite quotes. Here’s mine for the record, from memory. Excuse me if I miss a word. “I’ve waited a long time to show these flowers how pretty you are.”
I also love, “Half of seeming clever is keeping your mouth shut at the right times.”
I’m telling you three times, Pat, I love your books.
