Tabletop

As some of you have already seen, I was a guest on Wil Wheaton’s Tabletop a while back.

We played Lords of Waterdeep, and I had a great time.

To be completely honest with you, I wasn’t planning on watching the episode. After all, I was there. I know how the game played out. I bought the proverbial t-shirt.

But I wanted to hear Wil’s introduction to the game, so I started watching it.

And then I started laughing.

And then I kept watching it, and I kept laughing.

The truth is, I’d forgotten a lot of what had happened in the game. What’s more, they did an *amazing* job of editing it together.

And most importantly, Wil, Felicia, and Brandon were a fun group to play with. I love hanging out with quick-witted sharp-tongued people.

I ended up watching the whole thing eventually.

Here’s the episode if you’re interested….

My very favorite part was at the end when I screw up my cue….

Alternately, if watching cool, awesome, funny things isn’t really your bag. Here’s a little interview I did after the show. I talk about how I feel about board games and tell a cute story about my little boy, Oot.

Share and Enjoy,

pat

I’ve never played a board game past monopoly, but I gotta say with how much I love a good old fashioned j.r.p.g. Dungeons and dragons sounds pretty neat.

You’re missing out. We’re in a golden age of board games right now….

I would love to play board games such as this. But none of my family is into this kind of stuff, and I just moved to a new town! Ideas or thoughts on how to fix this?

Start with simpler games. The vast majority of people think Monopoly and Scrabble when they think of board games.

Take a small step toward these style of games. I’d suggest starting with Ticket to Ride (it is easy to find at even standard toy stores, so the mundanes don’t get turned off).

Then perhaps Munchkin (because humor really opens people up to trying new things), or Settlers of Catan (due to it being easy to learn and play…great family game).

THEN you can move on to the big boys like Game of Thrones, or Puerto Rico.

Second this. My friends and family weren’t in to board games much either but I bought a couple of games I saw played on Tabletop and seemed easy/cool, pulled them out when we were sitting around on Holidays or regular get togethers.

            *bam*

Even had my parents playing. It was really amusing introducing them to Munchkin, my Mom would NOT stop cursing my Dad like every chance she got, it was ridiculous!!!

And honestly, if it weren’t for Munchkin, I never could have convinced my adult friend group to play Dungeons and Dragons with me on Saturday nights instead of getting ridiculously drunk in public.

So yah, watch a few more episodes and pick a game you think would be appealing yet easy. Ease is important for introduction in my opinion.

Also agreed. Watch more TableTop episodes, and see which ones you think would fit in well – King of Tokyo converted a couple of my friends.

Check out Meetup.com. As long as the town you moved to isn’t too small, you should be able to find some active board gaming group in your area.

What is the difference between a “table top” game and games like Warhammer/40K and Warmachine/Hordes?

Or is it literally anything played on a tabletop is part of the genre.

Is that something you’ve do or have done Pat?

Can’t imagine you having the spare time to get painting miniatures

Tabletop games refer to anything that needs a large flat surface like a table. However you can create subcategories of that as well:

Tabletop RPG, Tabletop mini game, Tabletop war game, Tabletop board game, etc.

I second that! I was completely ignorant about the world of Table Top games up until a year or so ago. I got so geeked into it that I even went to GenCon this year and got a photo with Pat and got his signature on my Boss Monster game box and promotional Kvothe Card. We made manly poses at the camera; hilarious! Thanks for the unforgettable moment Pat!

That was very funny, and takes me back to many a night spent around the table with friends.

Also, the shirt you’re wearing in the video is awesome. Where’d you pick it up?

My favorite tabletop thus far. Congrats on winning! Although I must say I felt sorry for Wil, as I have felt that early lead hate soooooo many times (the majority of the time it was justified, but still…).

I have played the same hide and seek like game with my 4 year old. Your analysis was great!

She also loves to play along with us even in games for which she doesn’t know the rules, like Ticket to Ride and Fluxx.

She is playing something, and enjoying it. It doesn’t matter to me that it’s not the same game the rest of us are playing…

My husband and I loved watching you guys play Lords of Waterdeep. We are going to have to pick up the game.

Did you check out the gag reel that came out a week later? It is quite funny.

Oh my lord, I loved your Tick reference!

And it warms my heart that you’re a fan of Agricola. It is my absolute favorite board game.

One more thing! You might want to check out this Kickstarter if you’re looking for a worthwhile board game to play with Oot in the near future. It looks pretty nifty.

    Thanks for being awesome!

Pat, you are an absolute delight to watch play games. If you were ever to start some sort of show or podcast where you just play games (tabletop, RPG, or otherwise) with people I would pay out my nose to kickstart the shit out of it. Please don’t stop being so awesome.

I particularly liked the bit where you say to the camera “Happy Birthday Bandon”

But he’s just off camera so leans in and says thank you and you start cracking up.

Pat, I think my favorite thing about your interviews is just how articulate you are. Careful enunciation, rich vocal tone, no filler-humming… not to mention the fully thought out POINT to your conversation. Beautiful.

This was fun to watch. I was cracking up. But I really want to know what your reaction was when Wil said go write book 3, since we all know it is your least favorite thing to hear–which of course he knew. I think that statement alone means Wil got what he deserved as did you, Pat. Grats on the win. I can’t wait to see a rematch!!!

I have it on good authority that Pat and Wil had a knife fight in the parking lot after filming over that jibe.

Wil was winning until he accidentally snipped off a bit of Pat’s epic beard. Pat just sort of hulked out and Wil’s knife just sort of…snapped when it touched his skin. It took 3 sec guards and a helpful old lady to pull them both apart.

I hear they’ve become best friends now, as kids are wont to do after a scuffle.

Cool, I might actually get to watch this tonight!

Also, I’ve been wondering, is Storyboard completely shut down now? Not going to happen anymore? Or just not for now while you are so busy with writing, cons, and the soon to come Worldbuilders 2013/14?

    Dear Patrick,

I’m a new (and very big) fan logging in to your blog for the first time. Please, allow me to say that you rock, good sir.

My girlfriend, who is an aspiring writer (like myself), turned me on to your writing and I’m so glad that she did :)

Any chance that I might correspond with you re: a very special request for her upcoming birthday? I’ll take care of all the particulars and promise to keep the expense of your time to an absolute minimum. In the event that this might be possible, please, jot me a quick note at: [email protected] – no subject or actual email text necessary ;)

I understand that this may not be possible considering your certainly busy schedule… either way, best of luck on the 3rd book; so excited about your ongoing creative efforts and truly appreciate you and your work.

    Cheers,
    Lytfi Volksmyth
