Hey there everybody,
I wanted to let you know that I will be in Madison Wisconsin starting tomorrow.
I’m mostly there for Gamehole Con, but while I’m there I thought I’d stop by Room of One’s Own and do a signing. They’re an awesome indie bookstore in downtown Madison. (Just off state street).
(I’m also fond of them for other reasons, but that will be a blog for a different day.)
This isn’t related to the convention at all, so anyone can stop by.
If you can’t make this time, you can even pre-order some of my books at this link.
Deets:
Room of One’s Own (website)
3:00-4:30 PM on Thursday, November 8
315 W Gorham St
* * *
Beyond that, I’ll be doing several events at Gamehole Con on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are required for the GHC events, and currently all are sold out except the Friday D&D game. That said, tickets are free and become available every so often so keep an eye out if you’re interested. (Also, if not everyone shows up you might be able to get in, but there are no guarantees.)
- Friday, November 9
Assembling Imagination
1:00 – 2:00 PM in Waubesa
I’ll be talking worldbuilding with Matt Finch, Peter Brett, and Matt Forbeck.
More details here.
Maze Arcana’s Inkwell Live: Tip of the Quill
3:00 – 7:00 PM in Monona – 233
I’ll be playing a game of D&D with Satine Phoenix, Adam Bradford, Todd Kenreck, and Eric Lang with Ruty Rutenberg DMing. You can find tickets here.
- Saturday, November 10
An Afternoon with Pat Rothfuss
1:00 – 3:00 PM in Waubesa
For An Afternoon with Pat Rothfuss you can expect me to do some reading, storytelling, and some Q&A. And then I’ll tell more stories. Also cursing. Also? Just whatever I feel like at the moment.
More details on this here.
Live Stream D&D Game run by Chris Perkins
8:00 PM – Midnight in Monona – 233
Chris Perkins will be DMing as Elisa Teague, Gaurav Gulati, Peter Brett, Amy Vorpahl, Matthew Mercer, and I play a live streamed session of D&D for children’s charities. This will be made more interesting by allowing donors to influence the game by doing everything by choosing character names/races/classes to gifting re-rolls to summoning monsters.
For those not at the con, you can catch this on my Twitch channel.
(To be sent a heads-up when we go live (and when I stream generally) be sure to follow me over there and turn on notifications.)
If you want to participate in the charity element of the game, you can donate on my page, or donate to the other participants using these links:

Speaking of charity, the Worldbuilders fall fundraiser is coming up in a few weeks starting November 27. This is our tenth anniversary. And this year Worldbuilders is pulling out all the stops.
One of the biggest changes is that this year, the entire fundraiser is going to be two weeks long. Seriously. Only half as long, but we’re filling it with twice as much awesome. Just you wait.
I’ll be posting more about this soon, but in the meantime check out the Worldbuilders blog post here.
Hope to see some of you this weekend, online or otherwise….

D&D, Pat, and charity… Oh goodie.
Apologies in advance if this is a bit fangirly… OMG I LOVE YOU WHEN ARE YOU COMING TO AUSTRALIA?! Now that I’ve got that out of the way, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed watching your Q&A videos. So much humour, sass and vulgarity in one hour *sigh*… good times. I especially appreciate your willingness to talk about mental health though. It’s something I’ve struggled with most of my life and I am so happy that you are trying to break down the stigma and misconceptions. It’s refreshing to see you taking on challenges and projects that make you happy. Dammit, it’s almost enough to make me really want to get my nerd on and get into D&D! Thank you. You inspire me.
Australia is, like, really far.
Yeah. It is… Hey, tell me. Have you ever heard of this place? If you ever happen to visit, will you post a blog about it so that I can live vicariously through you please? (I hope the link thing works!)
Well that’s embarrassing. Clearly I should not be allowed near technology. The place I’m talking about is called Evermore Park. Here is a link to a video, but I guess you’ll have to copy and paste it if you’re interested.

Mother fucker. Why did that link work? You know what? I’m out. Before I crash your site or break the whole internet or something. Have a great day!
But very lovely and well worth the visit and full of people who love you. Alternatively — WorldCon 2020??
Looking forward to another World Builders.
Hoping you break some new records.
Dammit Pat, after 3 years I almost finally got the Hamilton soundtrack to stop playing on an infinite loop in my head, then you just had to go and type the words “Just you wait”.
Those D&D games sound amazing! Both Chris Perkins and Ruty Rutenberg are incredible DMs, and of course as a huge Critical Role fan I’ll never pass up an opportunity to watch Matt Mercer as a player. Can’t wait to watch!
I love seeing Critters just about everywhere these days. Have fun, Pat!
Good Morning Pat,
I have been thinking of you and the worldbuilders fundraiser quite and bit in the past few weeks. I am glad to see that it is still going strong.
I know that you have been dealing with some troubling times and I hope that you have found the balance to maintain your good mental health. That above all else is key.
Please know that your works bring joy to the world.
Peace to you.
P
Seriously in need of Day 3 of the Kingkiller chronicles… Any idea when Kvothe will finish his tale?? He started a war after all but never got around to telling how that came to pass!
Many thanks in advance! Please feed my addiction!
Cheers- W
Just to get ahead of this before everyone else swoops in as well, it’s generally bad form to mention Doors of Stone. Pat’s working on it and he wants it to be done probably more than you do. While we can certainly sympathize with the impulse (hell, there’s a reason I’m on this blog!), it’s safe to assume that Pat has heard the request before. Let the man live his life.
It’s a pity that it’s considered bad form, though? Me, and probably alot of people with me check in here on a regular basis to check for news. It’s just because we so eagerly await the conclusion to the books we all love. There is no mention, ever, of anything going on. Even a comment like “I dont have time for it now or in the upcoming 8 months” would still be better than silence. So i can understand where the question is coming from, and it was written with love. :)
Originally written for George R.R. Martin but I think it applies to any author: https://youtu.be/4H0hRTGfVfA
Have only seen the title of the song so far, but that’s a bit harsch? We’re asking for information, (any) not a deadline.
I know you folks mean well, and you’re just concerned about when you’ll get to read the next book, but I’m sure you’ve noticed that writing is very stressful, and deadlines especially are VERY stressful. Pat will be done with the book when he’s done with the book, and as much as I want to read it, I also want Pat to be healthy, and not stressed by people asking for news about the book, so I’d like to request that you kindly stop asking for now.
I’m tossing this into the public well hoping to make ripples.
I’ve suggested to PR twice by email that he create a new literary form called the Beta Novel. I think it would do his state of mind wonders, and make his fans very happy, to publish a D3 in beta form – meaning unpolished! And then republish as often as he wants till he feels done. He’ll sell every version, no doubt.
The old adage that it’s late once and bad forever is no longer true. !!! It can be late forever (think the Silmarillion) and bad only until the next iteration.
Beta novels can be ebooks or print books or whatever he pleases. They take the pressure off the author, make the readers happier than fanfic, and will lead to generations of heated fun about whether version 6 or 9 of D3 was the “real” real version, or do we really have to accept the final version 15?
So please, guys, let’s all tell PR that we’re fine with whatever he’s done so far. We’ll read them all and pay for them all (on some fair payment schedule). He can stop feeling stuck and just let it finally flow.
Also – eager to watch the D&D later tonight!
Hey Pat, do you know if there will be a livestream for people who aren’t able to attend?
where’s the book?
See, THIS is the kind of comment that i understand can get annoying.
but where IS the book? is it been written on? is it on the waiting list? is it in lecture phase? where is the book is quite a normal question. especially when youve been waiting for it for so long. and all you get as answer from the autor is angry words towards people that want to throw money at him. is it really so hard to just tell the people where the book is? lot of people would shut up if they just got an answer to that simple question.
The book is in his head and will stay there until it is finished and polished and the best book it can be — does that answer your question?
No, my dear. It is not in his head at all, which is why it isn’t being worked on. Mark my words, Mr. Rothfuss will never, ever finish the book.
That’s completely fine, but I wish he’d admit it.
I know he got some personnal problems but … Well let’s face it.
Whatever problems the book has, if he wasn’t able to solve them during the last 6 years, he won’t be able to solve them during the 6 next ones… or the 60 next ones.
This will be the best trilogy that will be never finished.
But all is not dark : in 2021, it will be the 10th anniversary of Wise Man’s Fear … Fans will be able to rejoice by buying the same book … again
I’m very excited about this year’s Worldbuilders fundraiser! This year was financially difficult for me but I was able to save a bit of money because I knew Worldbuilders fundraiser is coming. Plus, I’ve found an amazing community that doesn’t know much about your work, so I’ll definitely share it with them. :)
Thanks so much. Spreading the word is a great help.
Hey Pat, wasn’t able to watch the D&D stream last night. Will it be uploaded anywhere? I wanted to watch. :(
Hey begna112,
I found this upload on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/334797681
For anyone who missed the D&D stream and doesnt have Twitch, D&D Beyond posted a video of it on Youtube. Here’s a link:

I just wanted to say you’re a wonderful force for good and the world is lucky to have you.
You’ve literally changed people’s lives. Given them hope and a future. Not many people can say that.
Looking forward to Worldbuilders :-)
I am moving – to a different country non the less – exactly during this year’s fundraiser and have no idea if internet access will be available in time to allow me to participate. I would be bummed if I could not partake. :-(
Please keep you fingers crossed that all will work out in time for me to donate.
I’ve honestly, which breaks my heart, had to stop recommending Pat and his Amazing writing. If the space between these novels was going to be so great, the initial release of the first novel should have been delayed. I have people that won’t listen to my book recommendations any more because they, like myself, are still waiting on this series, of which, I introduced. And at this point, it’s safe to say it is not impatiently waiting. I used to believe the excuses myself and even make up some of my own for him. Having said that, I’ve seen equal quality and at least some quantity coming from other authors in the fantasy industry and yet this well still sits dry.
It feels like Pat is intentionally holding cards close to his chest in order to build excitement for his next cash cow: the movie or show, set in his world. Is it his right to do so? Sure is! But this decision is likely costing him fans and as you can see there is at least some portion (probably larger than he would like to admit) of his fans that are just fed up and may not be a future consumer of his work product out of spite alone.
Good luck to Pat and whatever non-author stuff he’s doing. Maybe, if he’s lucky, I’ll check back in another year to see if he’s made any announcement. My gut tells me he will not have, and my disappointment will be little because I will likely have moved on and forgotten about sympathy, Kvothe and Denna.
I should probably unfollow him on Twitter as that’s just further disappointment with no important news either besides some political or philanthropic spew, of which his opinion I do not care.
Good!
Go live your life and stop obsessing about a book. Or obsess about some other books. There are hundreds of great ones (have you seen PR’s recommended list?, or do you not care for his opinion on this either;). I don’t think anyone is going to mind or take offense if you are no longer actively preaching the gospel of Kote.
There is so much to do and see in the world (and in your own little corner of the world, which I am guessing is probably the Midwest based on how passive-aggressive your comment is)! Take that energy you are using to be surly about a book and use it for good (or evil (or neutrality); depending on what robes you wear)!!
And you won’t forget about sympathy or Big Red, because PR made something really special, something that sticks to your ribs. Even if there is never a third book, I am sure glad I got to read the first two.
I am also guessing that whenever B3 comes out, you’ll probably read it. And you should, cause it’ll be fraking great:)
Cheers
So many condescending assumptions in this comment.
Is there an active collection of Kvothe theories anywhere? There are lots of dormant ones. Any that are still accreting theories and discussion?
Yo Pat! Was watching the 2018 NYC comic con, and stuck to your mention of your built Champions ruleset for kkc universe. Was wondering if you might publish those rules, or at least the mathematics behind sympathy. Would absolutely love to geek out!

I just want to share THE game “Call to Adventure” with expansion NOTW, Path said early about this game, but I just want to share last update with two pictures with Kvothe : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/brotherwise/call-to-adventure-featuring-name-of-the-wind/posts/2351055
this is AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, Path what are you think?!?
cheers…
I mostly love A Room of One’s Own for the clever name and how more and more rooms reveal themselves as you peruse.
Looking forward to the blog about why you like it ;)
Yes. You have a lot to do. You travel a lot. you do this and that. You write this and that.
You´re probably one of the busiest man ever… and maybe you´ll never WANT to finish the doors of stone. But if so: please tell us. I must not be waiting and i don´t want to anymore. I´m (and a lot of friends too) not interested in a new comic, a film etc. The only thing I´m interested in is if i could read this book in my personal lifespan. So take yourself a year (or whatever time you need) and get it ready. Please.
Pls tell more on or about the fae lady,,
