One Good Thing

A little while back, I was doing some livestreaming over on my twitch channel, and someone in the chat mentioned that they missed my blogs.

Wait…

I just did the math and realized it’s actually two or three months ago. It doesn’t *feel* like 2-3 months. It either feels like two weeks or two years. My perception of time was never the best, and now with Covid it feels like I’m living in a tesseract that’s also an escape room designed by a sadist.

Anyway. Back a billion years ago, I was streaming and someone asked me if I ever planned on writing more blogs. I mentioned that I’d love to. I miss writing the blogs, too. Or rather, I miss the community that we had here where I would share stories and people would interact in the comments.

Truth is, I’ve made notes, taken pictures, set aside links for at least two dozen blogs just this year alone. A lot of them I’ve actually started writing, too…

But there’s a lot that gets in the way. Covid, of course. Regular life. Being a dad. Other work. Mood disorders. Chaos and charity….

Also, when I think of writing a blog, all I can think of is the fact that I haven’t written *anything* here in the last six months. Hell, I’ve barely written much in the last 2-3 years.

It’s so different than it used to be back in the day: I used to post at least once or twice a week, telling y’all little stories about what was going on with me. My adventures as a fledgling author. I enjoyed sharing little pieces of my life, and odds are, if something interesting or important happened, y’all would hear about it here.

But for a long while now, a lot of what’s been going on with me… talking about it just hasn’t been appropriate. Most of the big events in my personal life are depressing, or not entirely mine to share.

On the other hand there’s my professional life. There have been big things there too, many of them centering around the development deal with Lionsgate, and the show I was working on with John Rodgers for Showtime. Those things have been a big part of my life for years, taking up a ton of time, energy, and headspace. (Hell, just negotiating the contract with Lionsgate took me nearly 18 months.)

Was it interesting? Absolutely. New? Terrifyingly so. Were there stories to tell? Very yes. Once Flavor Flav stopped me in my hotel lobby and told me I really looked like an old friend of his. I actually worked with Sam Raimi. (He’s really nice.) I got to be in a writer’s room for the first time. In fact, I’ve been in more than one.

The problem is this: A lot of times I wasn’t legally allowed to talk about some of those things. Like one of the writer’s rooms I was in. Signed a big NDA. Just not allowed to say.

Even when it wasn’t illegal for me to talk about, a lot of times it would have been really unforgivably rude. Like when I met Raimi, we talked a couple times *long* before Lionsgate ever made the announcement that he was involved in the movie. So I couldn’t just go on my blog and tell y’all about how he was really nice and also he gave me a lemon.

(Also, for those of you who haven’t been following the news. Raimi isn’t involved in the project any more. It just didn’t work out.)

So yeah. Through the last couple years, even when it wasn’t illegal for me to share news, after a few mistakes I learned it was still really bad form to talk about a lot of things publicly. And so, because I wanted to be a good collaborator, I just didn’t talk about things.

So what does this have to do with me streaming a couple months back?

Well, as I said, someone mentioned that they missed the blogs, I said I missed them too. But I’ve gotten out of the habit. And the world is on fire. And I’m constantly exhausted. And part of me feels like I’m going to start sharing stories here again, I should try to catch people up on that last 4-5 years of my life. An odd, impossible urge…

So I mentioned a thought I’d been rolling around in my head. That rather than worry about posting up something important or profound, I could just share one good thing out of my day on the blog. Just a little thing to remind me that not everything is covid. That there’s still joy to be had in the world.

People seemed to like the idea, so I decided to do it.

And then a couple months went by….

But here. Now, I’m going to do it. Here’s one good thing, a text a business associate sent me after we had a zoom meeting:

As you can see, this is from a while ago. I’ve been saving a bunch of little things like this with the intention of sharing them here more regularly.

In other news, Worldbuilders just launched its Midseason Fundraiser. For the next week, we’re selling a bunch of cool geekery so we can keep the lights on.

It only lasts for a week, and some items are limited quantities. So if you’re curious, you should head over and check it out.

Also, in addition to my regular streaming and gaming and Q&A and such that I do, today (Tuesday) I’m going to be doing a livestream to talk with him about his new book that’s releasing today: Peace Talks.

This chat will be extra fun for us here at Worldbuilders, as we’re we’re also selling copies of Jim’s Books with specially designed Worldbuilders-Exclusive  bookplates…

You can catch our Q&A over on my twitch stream.

You can see the cool bookplates designed by Satine Phoenix and Nate Taylor over here in our Indigogo or over here in the Worldbuilders store.

As always, all proceeds go to making the world a better place.

Stay tuned. I’ll be doing a couple more blogs over the next couple days…

Thanks for the post, Pat! In my household there is a daily tradition, which is to remember one great thing from the day no matter how seemingly inconsequential or small (for example, seeing that dog sh*t before actually stepping in it, that’s a win). It has been especially helpful now, when there seems to be little to celebrate. Being mistaken for a famous witch or wizard would certainly get a mention.

Whatever you choose to share with the world is a gift for us and not an obligation of you, so thanks again! And good luck with the fundraiser, looking forward to that fancy pants Illimat board.

Hey Pat! Thanks for sharing man! One good thing is I got my mom reading the Name of the Wind and she loves it! She said it was on the same level as the Lord of the Rings and although she doesn’t read much fantasy novels she is really enjoying it. You’re a great writer Pat and I believe you’ve created a classic for the fantasy genre that will be loved by generations of readers.

I’ve been LOVING the Jim Butcher videos with both y’all just talking about life stuff and writing. It’s so fun to listen to! I’m dying to read Peace Talks and just waiting to go get my copy today!

    Thanks for posting!

Welcome back! Not sure if you’re answering questions in these comments, but will any of the One Shot Podcast be considered cannon? If anything, you need to keep Ms. Darvin’s Scutten. That song is the bomb. I seriously cannot get it out of my head. It’s been one good thing in my day for days now.

    Welcome back Pat!
It is sooo nice to hear from you! I used to enjoy your blogs as i remembered myself thinking; let’s read what is keeping Pat busy these days! And it used to amuse me that sometimes you could almost read your frustration, your happiness or your sadness -this it didn’t amused me- through the lines, one can quite good hide all of that when you speak but it is hard to do so when you write!

I am slightly shocked though… I don’t know how you manage to find time to write here and keep us in the loop considering all the things you are doing (twitch, charity, writing…). Thanks for taking the time to do so! whatever you decide to share with us, we are happy to read even when it means not so good news about “that which should not be mentioned* -I thought it was appropriate to call it that way considering you have been officially unmasked as Dumbledore.

    Stay safe, Pat.

Pat! It’s great to hear from you. I watched you and Jim Butcher on Twitch today. What an absolute treat – two of my favorite authors! Great job on the fundraiser so far – it was up over $25k last I looked.

I’m glad you’re doing alright, given all the crazy stuff going on in this world. It’s awesome that Sadie thinks you’re Dumbledore. One of my favorite quotes from Dumbledore is “Alas… ear wax.” It pretty much sums up the world we live in. My other favorite quote from Dumbledore is “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” You are a great person, Pat, who works hard to make the world a better place. I’m glad that you’ve decided to start posting one positive thing that has happened in your life – you are finding a way to turn on the light in these dark times.

Thanks so much for sharing Pat! It is important for us to take the time to remember the good things, however inconsequential they may seem. I often find joy in my child, even when he is being super frustrating, running around the house screaming, “Be nakie a little bit!” at bed time. Or recently when I got to see my best friend in person for the first time in 5 months and as we hugged we were also working out the mechanics of going to the bathroom while still embracing.
And I think that World Builders news is always good news to share! You are doing good in the world and you should promote that, and be proud of it.

Hey, Pat, it’s good to hear about you again.
In the past six months, since the last blog post you made, I’ve been constantly following the blog, opening it as often as 2 times in a week to see if you would post anything new.
I keep telling and talking with my friends here in Brasil (with an S, yes) about your books. Some of them have read it, some have not (and i keep telling them to do it), but I also talk about Worldbuilders and all you other cool stuff you do.
I remember when I decided to be a writer, back in 2015, I would get into your blog almost everyday to read some old tips you gave for beginners, and it really felt like a community for me to be part of. It really helped me find my way and made me thing about what kind of author, artist, creator, I would like to be, not only in the professional side, but also the human one, the caring one.
But now, since you are Dumbledore, you can get us some nice magic stuff from Hogwarts to show during this pandemic, which will be great to get the mind of some of the awful things this world is facing (maybe some dragons? who knows).
    Love your content. Stay safe.

You keep saying “illegal” when perhaps you mean that it’s against the terms of your contract. It’s not really “illegal” to break an NDA. Sure, you could be sued and blackballed from Hollywood, but that’s about the extent of what could happen to you.

See, this sort of thing is why a lot of people dislike lawyers. Maybe you are one, maybe you aren’t, but either way: what were you trying to achieve here? I hope it wasn’t “being more likeable than a lawyer”.

I was being a word pedant, because words matter. And perhaps educate others who have signed onerous NDAs – whether under duress or otherwise – that they weren’t going to be flogged, sent to prison, and forced to break rocks on a chain gang while watching their weathered hands chafe and bleed, all because they broke the terms of their non-disclosure agreement.

        Besides, everybody loves a pedant.

I don’t know how to explain how I feel. My works are largely personal and I am a decent bit reclusive In regards to my personal life. I have many ambitions and dreams that are perhaps larger than life, or at least, far outside of my grasp within one lifetime. I will, however, say this. A moment lost will never be forever lost, truly lost, HONESTLY lost, for it was, and so it is. The only thing to fear is to not. Thus fear is redundant in nature. It breads of itself. Do not fear fear. Do not fear doing. Do not fear not doing. Do not fear. Fear is the enemy of all logic, tho a most worthy adversary of understanding. The future is not promised. Do not fear this fact, Understand it. Believe it is truth. With infinite possibilities; what is it that you want to be, for it has bean. What could have been is a beautiful story, but it isn’t.

I feel your pain, bro’. One of my biggest personal challenges is when I want to reach out emotionally in some way, and then I pull back, and then it’s even harder to do the next time because I feel like I *also* need to acknowledge why I didn’t do it before. Over time it just builds up and I feel worse and worse, and I think just sweeping all that aside and pushing a reset button is the only way to push through. So well done you. For a while I was checking every day, and telling myself that your not posting was kind of like in Good Will Hunting where the best part of Ben Affleck’s day is the brief time where he’s hoping Matt Damon will have left home and found something better to do than hang out with him. I was rooting for no posts. But then I realized that was ridiculous, since your posting is supposed to be good for you, not a drain. If you found a way for it to be a plus, that’s awesome, since we love it in whatever aspect.

This post reminds me of something my wife and I say to each other regularly, after having watched The Last Air Bender together many years ago (thanks to Netflix, for bringing it back recently):

    Hi Pat,

Thanks for sharing again. I recognise the feeling of having a hard time celebrating small things, or even bigger things. It seems to be, for me at least, one of the downsides of growing older (I’m 38). Things that you found surprising and rewarding when you were 25, just don’t hold the same value anymore. And things start getting more complicated, for instance because of NDA’s making sure you cannot celebrate something the moment it happens, but only far after it happened. And at that time the moment of joy is far gone.

This flattening of life isn’t particularly healthy I think, so I try to follow the initiatives of people around me to celebrate more and easier, and share that with others. Just pop a bottle once a while together and enjoy the small moment. Having responsibilities is tough, but punishing yourself for all the things that you could have done better is not a reason for celebrating the things you did well.

I recently built a Harry Potter Lego set together with my kids, had the most positive experience in months! Even Dumbledore was in there, reminded me a bit of you by the way.

It’s great to hear from you and I just want to say I feel you – I’ve been in a similar head space recently. Time is weird, motivations are all over the board, writing has been extremely difficult and life, despite quarantine, seems like it is just as, if not more, chaotic than before.

I can’t always catch your live streams, but I try to read your blogs when I get a chance, so even if the updates are small – thank you – especially for the “good things” type stuff. It’s needed right now. I dunno why but ever since becoming a fan, I love hearing (or rather reading) your voice – kinda like it’s an old friend.

    Is that weird? Probably. Sorry.

    Never the less, thank you.

More blogs is always a good idea : ) Always brightens my day and makes me want to do better and more interesting things.

For me,seeing a new blog entry is kind of like finding a beautiful rock. I’m happy if I find one, but if I don’t, it’s alright as well. And I certainly don’t judge if it has been a year or a day since the last one.
I just look by the wayside from time to time to see if there is one : )

I love this ‘one good thing a day’ idea. Times have been so tough lately that sometimes it’s difficult to remember even the littlest things that are positive or make your day better and it can be so hard not to focus on the dumpster fire that the world is turning into these days – it’s hard not to feel negative or pessimistic.

Yesterday, a woman complimented the mask I was wearing to get coffee (it was a pink Lil Bub mask because she was the best cat and I love her sweet little space cat face) and told me to have a good day and said I was beautiful. It literally made my day. Today someone told me my hair looked nice (it’s blue and aquamarine and looks like mermaid ocean hair) And it got me thinking how much better the world would be if people could just be kinder to each other. Say that nice thing you were thinking. Compliment that stranger’s outfit. Tell someone you love them or that they’re beautiful or that talking to them makes your day better.

Focus on the little things that make your day easier and that make it easier for you to be present in the world. (And this is a general you not like YOU specifically – I imagine you know that but sometimes people take it the wrong way and think I’m singling them out when I talk like this. I am not – I promise!.)

I love this idea. And seeing you make the effort makes me want to make it too. Thanks for the inspiration Pat. And it’s good to see you writing and sharing again. :)

    Hi Pat!

I love hopping on here and finding a new blog I missed out on! The community that gathers here is refreshingly warm amongst the chaos that is life right now. With the stories you have created riding the thought train as often as they do, I think of you often and with a huge amount of respect and fondness. Sending good feelies your way as often as I can, and I imagine everyone else here is too. I imagine that many good feelies must feel pretty good every now and again. Like maybe right now. Or maybe later. But they’re definitely coming. Can you feel them yet?

Anyway thank you for everything. <3 Stay cool.

Hi, I’m not sure if you read these but I hope you do. And I feel bad because it isn’t exactly pertaining to this post but I was hoping maybe you could direct me in the right spot. That is if you already went over this. I know you got unhappy for a while because fans just wouldn’t stop asking when a book was coming out and I feel bad being that kind of fan but did you ever post anything about finishing the trilogy of the king killer books? I see you’re doing a lot of other things but I can’t find any mention of it and it’s been several years and that is only since you put a response one time I think along the lines of you had the major points set up and we’re looking for I don’t know it was proofreaders or reviewers or but that it was on its way basically and that seems like and I may be off in my timeline but maybe four or five years ago it’s been a while. I’m not trying to rush anything I just am eager and I wonder whatever happened to it.

Hi Pat! It’s good to focus on the good things that happen. I work in retail and some of those customers remind me of the scrael, unrelenting and seemingly never-ending. The good thing is that at that job, I found a good friend who shared my love for your amazing gift for writing. I suggest your books to anyone and everyone that will listen.

I hope you and yours are well!
