Home again, Home again, Jiggedy Jig.

Merciful Buddha, it’s good to be home again.

Don’t get me wrong, traveling abroad was a wonderful adventure, and I have many exciting stories to tell. But I got sick a few days after my London signing/reading and after that the trip was not so much fun. My memory of that last week blurs because I was either in terrible pain, under the influence of powerful drugs, or both.

Take my reading in Manchester, for example. I’m dimly aware that I might have said something about wanting to mess up Joe Abercrombie’s pretty face.

Like I said. Powerful drugs.

Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know that stories and photos will be forthcoming. I’m brimming with things I’d like to write about: Taxis of various nations. My inappropriate encounter with Stonehenge. A list of historic landmarks where I have touched Sarah’s bottom….

I would have posted some of these stories sooner, but internet access was not easy to come by traveling in the UK. One of the many things I never appreciated about Stevens Point before was how easy it is to get wireless access here. There are three coffeeshops downtown with free wireless. No, wait, four. Five. Hell, my neighbors have free wireless, though I suspect that’s an accident on their part.

Yessir. This small town boy sure found out that the world can be a cold, unfeeling place. More specifically, I learned that it can be a place that tries to charge you 22 Euros a day for Wifi.

Personaly, I have better things to do with my money. Specifically: Ale and whores.

Man I really need some sleep.

But first, more drugs.

Until later,

Photo Contest Part VI – Miscellaneous

Well, I seem to be on the mend from my recent bout with hellish sick. It was one of those where, as my mom used to say, “You run for the bathroom and then don’t know which end to point at the toilet.”

Even in the moments when I was not in danger of sudden containment breach, my guts…. how to put this delicately…. They have been filled with terrible rumblings. Were we on a spaceship together, and my guts made this sort of noise. I believe that you would be fully justified in shooting me and stuffing my body out an airlock, rather than risk dealing with whatever alien life form eventually emerged with the express purpose of wrecking your shit.

But enough of that. On to today’s winners. I’ve been saving some of the best for last:

There were a lot of pictures that didn’t fit into any category. So I decided to lump them all together under Miscellaneous. That’s what we have for you today:

Some of these were simple, if slightly quirky.

Some were slightly odd.

…and some were surreal.

Wii!

I really don’t know how I should feel about this shot….

Right now I’m going with vaguely titillated, then weird and guilty.

“Aerlevsedi” is definitely worth some extra points.

You guys….. I…. I love you guys. I don’t know who you are, but I’m guessing if I lived closer to you, we’d hang out. I’d bring over hex map (as opposed to your grid map) and teach you the Hero System ruleset so we could play in my world.

But alas….

These guys should go hang with the Barbies. I think that would be my favorite party ever.

I never expected The Name of the Wind to be scrapbooked. Ever. Never ever.

Someone familiar here, giving a bit of an Auri vibe. Plus: awesome tree.

As a side note, I think if I live a good life. I might see something like this when I die.

Hopefully just after I die though. Not just before. If I see this after I die, it’s because an angel wants my autograph. If I see it just before I die, it’s because a pretty young girl just pushed me out of a tree. Probably because I got all pervy on her.

I’m not sure why I like this one so much, but I do….

Science!

This looks like one of the old pieces of machinery you’d find in the Underthing.

The Runner-Up. Most of the pictures will be familiar to you, but you’ll have to embiggen it to read the text, and the text is really what makes this one shine.

The Winner. You’ll have to see the larger version of this one too. In fact, you’ll probably need to see some parts of it kind of close up to appreciate what’s going on….

Thanks again everyone who participated. And, as I’ve said before, info on claiming your prizes is in this blog post over here.

Still to come:”Best Cosplay” “Most Dramatic” and “Most Sexy.”

I’m off to work on book two….

Minnneapolis makes me sick….

When I got a stomach flu before heading out to Minneapolis on the 21st of April, I was willing to pass it off as inconvenient coincidence. But after I headed out last weekend to do signings at Dreamhaven and Uncle Hugo’s, I came back with a nasty head cold.

That’s twice. When something happens twice in a row, I’m pretty sure it’s science.

Despite this, Minneapolis seems like a really nice place. Plenty of coffee shops and the streets are in a lovely grid pattern that makes them very easy to navigate. That’s something you can take for granted if you grow up in a city like Madison, which is built on an ismus, and doesn’t have 100 meters of straight road in the entire city limits.

I made it to both bookstores on time. I had fun chatting with folks, didn’t misspell any names, and the folks at Uncle Hugo’s gave me Pocky.

Because of this trip, people who would like to buy signed copies of the book online can get them from Dreamhaven. Not only will they let you pick which cover you want, but if you order from them before the 20th, you can get me to personalize it when I meet up with them again at Wiscon.

After two signings, a radio interview, and a business dinner with two cool grad students who are putting together a fantasy conference at the University, I was pretty shagged out. My publisher had generously offered to pay for a hotel room Saturday night. (Their exact quote was, “We don’t want to you die before you finish editing book two.”) However, I figured I would push on through and save them the money.

That’s when things started to get interesting. Around 1:30 in the morning, I missed my turn-off and drove 40 miles in the wrong direction. Then I try to navigate the back roads trying to fix my route without backtracking.

So of course I get pulled over by a cop because I’m going too fast for the back roads. But he’s actually really cool and lets me go without a ticket. What’s more, he tells me that there’s a bridge out ahead, and tells me a quicker way to get around it than the official detour.

So I drive the remaining 90 miles home on the back roads. I saw two skunks, a possum, and 23 deer. Seriously. 23. It was actually kind of fun because it gave me an excuse to honk the horn a lot. And honking your horn is kinda fun if you’re sleep deprived at three in the morning. Or if you never really grew up in the first place and just enjoy honking it. Or both.

So I call it a successful trip. Cop, but no ticket. Deer, but no wreck. Detour, but not by much. Pocky. Horn. And I got to meet cool people and talk about my book. It was pretty much the perfect day.
