Subterranean Press & JoCo Cruise

As always, we’re launching out the fundraiser with some of our big guns: JoCo Cruise and Subterranean Press.

The first gives you the chance to win a cabin for 2 on the nerdiest cruise ever. The second sends us beautifully produced, sometimes limited, often rare copies of amazing books.

Last year was the first year we put something like this into the fundraiser, and it was awesome.

I’ve talked about JoCo Cruise on the blog recently.

You can get the full scoop there. But in brief, let me say that JoCo cruise is one of my favorite parts of the year. I’ve made some of my best friends there. I snorkeled for the first time. I’ve learned about new music. Met cool comics writers, got to hang out with the folks who make Nightvale….

Also? I drank rum out of a Pinapple on a beach. Which is actually as much fun as it sounds.

It’s everything I love about a convention, except it’s better. And on a boat. Plus there are extra things… like for example… We put on an entire music festival in Loreto….

So it is with no small amount of delight that I announce that JoCo Cruise has donated a posh balcony cabin for two to Worldbuilders. We’re putting it in the lottery where anyone who donates at least $10 has a chance to win it.

You’ll still need to pay for your own flights to and from the cruise, but once you’re on the boat you’re pretty much golden. There’s free food and drinks (with some options you’d have to pay for), concerts, events, panels, and so, so much more all all included.

The JoCo Cruise folks made a handy-dandy list for us of everything this does and doesn’t include, but the big thing is that every $10 you donate gets you another chance to win this awesome trip.

Subterranean Press

Since the beginning, the folks at Subterranean Press have been huge supporters of Worldbuilders.

They’ve been in the business of producing beautiful, high-quality books for ages. They’ll bring old books out of print, and they’ll produce new books with awesome authors.

They always send us well over a hundred books, some of which are limited, numbered, and signed. They sent us over $7,000 worth of books to add to the lottery, and they’re all beautiful.

Subterranean Press always goes the extra mile to make truly beautiful books, so we love being able to show them off. They work hard to make their books incredibly high quality, and they don’t miss the mark.

There’s lots of novels going into the lottery, but there’s also the opportunity to get some really great collections of stories from authors. It’s the perfect way to read someone new and get a good sense of their writing style, plus it’s a prize for doing awesome in the world.

Subterranean Press has truly beautiful limited editions of their books, and these three are no exception. All 74 of these books  have specially designed signature pages where you can also see the number of the book, and all 74 are in the lottery.

This has become my new favorite tradition. Subterranean takes the time every year to set aside one copy of each book they publish, then sends us one massive prize that we get to put up for auction.

All of these books had a fairly limited print run, and some are sold out. You can see the full list of everything included over in the auction listing, but the fact of the matter is it’s a lot of cool stuff.

Fantastic Books from Subterranean Press

This year begins like many years before it, with some amazing books from Subterranean Press.

It’s because of them that we get to start our big yearly fundraiser out right. As they donate a ton of books that are designed to be high-quality, long-lasting beautiful works of art.

They’ve been with us from the beginning, and every year we’re delighted to see them return.

Enough gushing. We’ve got books to showcase. All of these are signed, numbered, and limited editions, and pretty much all of them are going into the lottery where anyone has a chance to win them if they’re willing to chip in some money to make the world a better place.

If you know anything about comics, you know who Alan Moore is.

Voice of the Fire was Alan Moore’s first novel, and while he’s generally known for his graphic novels (Watchmen, V for Vendetta, and From Hell), you know this novel is pretty stand out too, because if it wasn’t it wouldn’t have an introduction by Joe Hill.

Did we mention it’s also illustrated by Dave McKean, too? Because it who else could you bring in for a project like this?

The Princess books are my beloved, demented little side project, and this is a really cool edition of the second one. In the back it has an extra section of Nate’s concept sketches, as well as my original script for the book, which ended up being *really* different from the final thing.

It has signatures from me and Nate, and it’s numbered.  There are 25 of these going into the lottery, and only 2,000 were printed.

In addition to being our longest-standing sponsor. Sub Press has made a regular habit of donating one of our coolest auction items every year.

These days, the lovely folks at Subterranean Press set aside one of every single book they publish over the course of the year just to give to Worldbuilders. There are 41 books in this set, and almost all of them are signed, limited or otherwise amazingly sparkly.

A lot of these books are sold out at this point, which means this is the only place you can conceivably get a copy.

There’s a bunch of stuff in there designed to make you tingly, but of particular interest to me were two lovely slipcased of Tim Powers books, including Drawing of the Dark. There’s a slipcased Diamond Age too. There’s some Gaiman in there, and Leckie, and Abercrombie…

Seriously, the Worldbuilders team had to slap my hands away from these books so I’d quit pawing at them.

Honestly? When I want to know what’s really going on with a big news item I check to see if Scalzi has written about it, because I trust his no-bullshit opinion more than 95% of what’s considered journalism these days.

This is a great collection. I own several copies, and I’ll be giving them away as Christmas presents. All but one, of course, that one is my precious.

This collection features one of every title published by Subterranean Press during 2013.

There are over 40 books included here, and over half of them are signed, limited editions. Many are numbered, slipcased, or out-of-print and nearly impossible to find anywhere else.

For those of you who don’t want to give yourselves eyestrain, this auction includes everything we mentioned above, plus more than 30 others: books by Tad Williams, Garth Nix, Kage Baker, Jim Butcher, Ray Bradbury, and Robin Hobb….

If you look at the auction description on ebay, you’ll note that it contains 38 books. This is because 2013 isn’t over yet. The auction winner will get the remaining 7 books in a separate shipment in January. And we’ll pay that shipping out of the goodness of our hearts.

That shipment will  include books from authors like Catherine Valente, Daniel Abraham, and… well… me. Patrick Rothfuss.

Let me make it clear, folks, just the cover price of these books is upwards to 3000 dollars. Some of these books are worth hundreds of bucks by themselves, and that was *before* they went out of print.

A Sale That Happens to be on Black Friday.

Let me be honest with you. I kinda hate the thought of having a Black Friday sale. It strikes me as a desperate attempt to be trendy and timely.

And as we all know, I am neither of those things.

But we were *already* planning on putting up our signed books for November. And since last month’s books sold out in about two hours, we were going to put up a new piece of Kingkiller jewelry we have from Badali, too. But we realized we might sell out of *those* pretty quickly too….

So we decided to launch a few other things we’ve been thinking about for months, because honestly, with all the donations coming in for this year’s Worldbuilders fundraiser, we need the shelf space.

And then we had so much momentum going, we decided to bundle a few things together at a discount, and put a few things on sale….

We’re going to package up a bunch of these lovely Prime books, then sell them to you at a huge discount.

If you buy a $30 bundle, it will contain over $150 of books.

The $50 bundle will have over $300 of books.

Subterranean Press has been with Worldbuilders from the very beginning. They were the first publisher to donate books to our cause, and because of that, they’ll always hold a special place in our hearts.

Worldbuilders 2009

What’s that you say? You’d like to make the world a better place while simultaneously winning fabulous prizes?

Well today is your lucky day.

Heifer International is my favorite charity. It helps people raise themselves up out of poverty and starvation. All over the world Heifer promotes education, sustainable agriculture, and local industry.

They don’t just keep kids from starving, they make it so families can take care of themselves. They give goats, sheep, and chickens to families so their children have milk to drink, warm clothes to wear, and eggs to eat.

(Are you ready? I’m so ready. Let’s do it.)

This year we’ve got a couple different options for donating.

Option 1 – The Lottery.

This is the option most people will want. It’s simple. You hop directly over to the page I’ve set up at Team Heifer, and donate.

When you donate using my page at team Heifer, two things happen.

1. Worldbuilders will match 50% of your donation. That means your ten-dollar donation becomes fifteen dollars. If you donate two goats, it becomes three goats. And so on.

2. You’ll be entered in the lottery.

After the fundraiser is over on January 15th, we’ll have random drawing for all the swag that’s been donated by authors and publishers over the last couple months. More than a thousand books, DVD’s and CD’s.

For every 10 bucks you donate, your name will get entered into the drawing once. If you donate thirty bucks, your name goes in three times. Think of it as buying tickets, if you like.

We’ve had *way* too many books donated for me to post them all up at once. It’s a prize-rich environment, with over a thousand books.

So I’ll be putting up a new blog full of donated books pretty much every day or so, just to keep people from being overwhelmed with all the awesome. Make sure to check back often.

Last year we raised 114,000 dollars for Heifer International. I’m hoping this year we can do even better.

Dec 1st – Fundraiser begins.
Dec 3rd – 10,000 dollars raised.
Dec 10th – 25,000 dollars raised.
Dec 25th – 50,000 dollars raised.
Jan 1st – 76,000 dollars raised. [Last year’s total beaten! Woo!]
Jan 6th – 90,000 dollars raised.
Jan 10th – 100,000 dollars raised.

Well folks, we’ve got about five days left to the fundraiser, and I’ve re-set the thermometer for what I’m guessing is going to be the last time.

$106836.28 may seem like kind of a strange target, but I assure you it’s significant. It’s exactly twice the amount that people donated last year. If we can raise it, I think we’ll have pretty conclusive proof for the stunning awesomeness of us.

Personally, I think we can make it. But remember, the fundraiser is over at the end of January 15th. So if you’re been waiting to chip in, now’s the time.

Option Two: The Sure Thing.

Or, as I like to think of it, the Christmas Present option.

For those of you who aren’t interested in the lottery, I have some stuff you can just buy. All the proceeds will go directly to Heifer International.

Option Three: Auctions.

This year we’ve decided to auction off some of the rarer items and specialized services people have donated.

We’ve got industry professionals willing to read your fledgling manuscript and give you feedback. We’ve got a limited edition Stardust ARC signed by Neil Gaiman and a copy of The Gathering Storm signed by Brandon Sanderson and the production team at Tor. We’ve got original manuscripts, software, and a rockstar’s guitar. Stay tuned for details.

A Quick Plea For Sanity

Lastly, I’d like to ask everyone to please read the instructions/directions carefully before they donate.

I know you’re excited. I’m excited too. We’re going to raise some money, make the world a better place, and end up with big warm fuzzy feelings.

But here’s the problem. If you’re *too* excited, you’ll end up clicking buttons all higgledy-piggledy, forgetting vital steps and leaving things out. (Especially when buying things with Paypal) Then you’ll send me an e-mail that says something like: “I’m sorry, but I forgot to include my shipping address/t-shirt size/signing instructions. Could you please fix it for me?”

I know I’m bound to get one or two e-mails like this. No biggie. But each one is like a cold drop of water eroding my warm fuzzy feeling. If I get, say, a hundred, I’ll have no warm fuzzy left at all. I’ll be left with nothing but a cold prickly feeling.

You don’t want to give me a cold prickly, do you?

I’m sure you don’t. And I’m sure that you’ll read the instructions carefully.
