Subterranean Press & JoCo Cruise

As always, we’re launching out the fundraiser with some of our big guns: JoCo Cruise and Subterranean Press.

The first gives you the chance to win a cabin for 2 on the nerdiest cruise ever. The second sends us beautifully produced, sometimes limited, often rare copies of amazing books.

JoCo Cruise

Last year was the first year we put something like this into the fundraiser, and it was awesome.

  • A Cabin for two on the JoCo Cruise

I’ve talked about JoCo Cruise on the blog recently.

You can get the full scoop there. But in brief, let me say that JoCo cruise is one of my favorite parts of the year. I’ve made some of my best friends there. I snorkeled for the first time. I’ve learned about new music. Met cool comics writers, got to hang out with the folks who make Nightvale….

Also? I drank rum out of a Pinapple on a beach. Which is actually as much fun as it sounds.

It’s everything I love about a convention, except it’s better. And on a boat. Plus there are extra things… like for example… We put on an entire music festival in Loreto….

So it is with no small amount of delight that I announce that JoCo Cruise has donated a posh balcony cabin for two to Worldbuilders. We’re putting it in the lottery where anyone who donates at least $10 has a chance to win it.

You’ll still need to pay for your own flights to and from the cruise, but once you’re on the boat you’re pretty much golden. There’s free food and drinks (with some options you’d have to pay for), concerts, events, panels, and so, so much more all all included.

The JoCo Cruise folks made a handy-dandy list for us of everything this does and doesn’t include, but the big thing is that every $10 you donate gets you another chance to win this awesome trip.

Subterranean Press

Since the beginning, the folks at Subterranean Press have been huge supporters of Worldbuilders.

They’ve been in the business of producing beautiful, high-quality books for ages. They’ll bring old books out of print, and they’ll produce new books with awesome authors.

They always send us well over a hundred books, some of which are limited, numbered, and signed. They sent us over $7,000 worth of books to add to the lottery, and they’re all beautiful.

Let’s do it:

Subterranean Press always goes the extra mile to make truly beautiful books, so we love being able to show them off. They work hard to make their books incredibly high quality, and they don’t miss the mark.

There’s lots of novels going into the lottery, but there’s also the opportunity to get some really great collections of stories from authors. It’s the perfect way to read someone new and get a good sense of their writing style, plus it’s a prize for doing awesome in the world.

  • 25 Numbered, Signed copies each of River’s Edge by James P. Blaylock and Bubba and the Cosmic Blood-Suckers by Joe R. Lansdale. 24 Numbered, Signed copies of The Process (is a Process All Its Own) by Peter Straub.

Subterranean Press has truly beautiful limited editions of their books, and these three are no exception. All 74 of these books  have specially designed signature pages where you can also see the number of the book, and all 74 are in the lottery.

  • Auction: One of everything published in 2017 from Subterranean Press.

This has become my new favorite tradition. Subterranean takes the time every year to set aside one copy of each book they publish, then sends us one massive prize that we get to put up for auction.

All of these books had a fairly limited print run, and some are sold out. You can see the full list of everything included over in the auction listing, but the fact of the matter is it’s a lot of cool stuff.

If you want it all to be yours, head over there and bid.

***

Thank you for taking the time to come play with us. We’re so excited to do this, and we’re thankful to have such awesome supporters.

There’s so many places to check out if you’re curious about the campaign.

The first button is for the Hub Blog, where there’s links to every newly posted category of swag, the summary of how the lottery works, as well as any other information you may need about the fundraiser. It’s the perfect place to start.

The second button will take you to the Worldbuilders Website, where you can also find many relevant links, check out all of our sponsors, find our FAQ, and more.

The third button will take you where you need to get to DONATE as quickly as possible and participate in the lottery while making the world a better place.

The fourth button will take you to our eBay page, where you’ll be able to see everything that’s up for auction right now, including things we haven’t talked about yet…

The fifth button will take you to the Lottery Library, where you can see everything we’ve put up for grabs in the lottery. You can check things out based on donor, whether they’re signed, how limited they are, whether they’re books, games, comics, or jewelry, and more. It’s your one-stop-shop to see what’s available.

And there’s a lot available, folks.

Fantastic Books from Subterranean Press

This year begins like many years before it, with some amazing books from Subterranean Press.

It’s because of them that we get to start our big yearly fundraiser out right. As they donate a ton of books that are designed to be high-quality, long-lasting beautiful works of art.

They’ve been with us from the beginning, and every year we’re delighted to see them return.

Enough gushing. We’ve got books to showcase. All of these are signed, numbered, and limited editions, and pretty much all of them are going into the lottery where anyone has a chance to win them if they’re willing to chip in some money to make the world a better place.

  • 20 numbered, limited edition copies of Working for Bigfoot. Signed by Jim Butcher.

workingforbigfoot_all_withsig

This is a collection of 3 Dresden Files novellas surrounding his jobs working for Bigfoot and his scion son, Irwin. If that’s not enough for you, then add in that there are beautiful illustrations from Vincent Chong.

It’s a beautiful and funny collection, so if you’re interested, we have 20 copies in the lottery. Every $10 you donate gives you another chance to win.

  • 20 numbered, limited edition copies of Stinger. Signed by Robert McCammon.

stinger_all_withsig

Here we have a beautiful reprint of one of Robert McCammon’s classic stories. There are new interior illustrations by Les Edwards, and we have 20 out of the 1000 ever printed right here for you to drool over.

  • 20 numbered, limited edition copies of Blue World. Signed by Robert McCammon.

blueworld_all_withsig

This collection of short stories has full-color interior illustrations by Vincent Chong, which are exclusive to the 1000 book print run of limited editions. It has 16 McCammon short stories, including 3 that were previously uncollected.

  • 20 numbered, limited edition copies of Voice of the Fire. Signed by Alan Moore.

voiceofthefire_all_withsig

If you know anything about comics, you know who Alan Moore is.

Voice of the Fire was Alan Moore’s first novel, and while he’s generally known for his graphic novels (WatchmenV for Vendetta, and From Hell), you know this novel is pretty stand out too, because if it wasn’t it wouldn’t have an introduction by Joe Hill.

Did we mention it’s also illustrated by Dave McKean, too? Because it who else could you bring in for a project like this?

  • 20 numbered, limited edition copies of Best of Nancy Kress. Signed by Nancy Kress.

kress_all_withsig

“Another candidate for the title of best collection of the year, in a year that’s turning out to be very strong for short-story collections, is The Best of Nancy Kress… worth it for the extensive amount of really first-class fiction you get, including several Hugo and Nebula Award winners.” –Locus

  • 20 numbered, limited edition copies of Savages. Signed by K.J. Parker.

savages_all_withsig

“Parker delivers another solid standalone adventure filled with political and social intrigue…there’s much to enjoy in the well-crafted action, battle sequences, and assorted political and social twists within a society in upheaval.” –Publishers Weekly

  • 20 numbered, limited edition copies of Teaching the Dog to Read. Signed by Jonathan Carroll.

teachingthedogtoread_all_withsig

This cover made Amanda all kinds of uncomfortable. Which means it probably did its job.

“Carroll’s pacing is perfect, as he introduces new elements of oddness one by one. And his insight into matters of the heart is deep. ‘There are moments in any relationship which can come at the beginning, middle or end, where everything balances on a single word or sentence.’ In elegant yet utterly unpretentious prose, Carroll provides one of those pivotal instances right here.” –Locus Online

  • 20 numbered, limited edition copies of Best of Gregory Benford. Signed by Gregory Benford.

benford_all_withsig

“The Best of Gregory Benford, edited by David G. Hartwell, brings together almost 40 of his 200 stories. They’re the best introduction you can find to how scientists think…. The odd thing is that, for all the chill of the situations, this collection is actually ‘heartwarming’ (to use an adjective Mr. Benford would scorn)” –The Wall Street Journal

speakeasy_all_withsig

“Valente’s Prohibtion-era spin on the classic story of ‘The Twelve Dancing Princesses’ is thoroughly eerie and enchanting… this fresh fairytale gets under your skin quicker than Zelda Fair’s black-market booze.” –RT Reviews

  • 25 numbered, limited edition copies of The Adventures of The Princess and Mr. Whiffle: The Dark of Deep Below. Signed by me and Nate Taylor.

pw2_all_withsig

The Princess books are my beloved, demented little side project, and this is a really cool edition of the second one. In the back it has an extra section of Nate’s concept sketches, as well as my original script for the book, which ended up being *really* different from the final thing.

It has signatures from me and Nate, and it’s numbered.  There are 25 of these going into the lottery, and only 2,000 were printed.

  • Auction: One Complete Set of Everything Published in 2015. That’s 41 books total.

subpress_all

(You really want to click this to embiggen it. Trust me.)

In addition to being our longest-standing sponsor. Sub Press has made a regular habit of donating one of our coolest auction items every year.

These days, the lovely folks at Subterranean Press set aside one of every single book they publish over the course of the year just to give to Worldbuilders. There are 41 books in this set, and almost all of them are signed, limited or otherwise amazingly sparkly.

A lot of these books are sold out at this point, which means this is the only place you can conceivably get a copy.

There’s a bunch of stuff in there designed to make you tingly, but of particular interest to me were two lovely slipcased of Tim Powers books, including Drawing of the Dark. There’s a slipcased Diamond Age too. There’s some Gaiman in there, and Leckie, and Abercrombie…

Seriously, the Worldbuilders team had to slap my hands away from these books so I’d quit pawing at them.

It’s a huge prize, and one we want to make sure goes to a collector or other enthusiastic geek, so it’s up for auction right over here, where you’ll also be able to see the full list of all 41 books.

* * *

There we go. As always, Subterranean Press has started us off right with hundreds of books in the lottery and one massive auction.

Don’t forget that every $10 donation you make to our fundraising page gets you another chance to win something in the lottery.

Ready for the cool clickable image thing?

Mmmmm… clickable…..

Glorious Books from Subterranean Press

There are some traditions I really believe in, and one of them is starting the Worldbuilders fundraiser off properly, featuring the beautiful books from our oldest sponsor Subterranean Press.

They’ve been with us from the beginning, but even better, Subterranean Press produces some of the most lovely, gorgeous, high-quality books in the business. What’s more, they’re always extraordinarily generous with them.

You can tell because there are twenty copies of each of these books in the lottery, as well as one awesome auction at the end…

BlackHatJack

Black Hat Jack is profane, vulgar, hilarious, tongue-in-cheek, and full of rousing adventure, as a good dime novel, or dime novella, should be.” – Booklist

  • 20 limited edition copies of Unlocked. Signed by John Scalzi.

Unlocked

John is a big supporter of Worldbuilders, to say nothing of the fact that he’s a good friend and a generally awesome guy.

What’s more, he’s my kind of crazy. I know this because he came up with the entire social history of the incredibly pervasive disease featured in his newest book, Lock In. and written the oral history of it.

“This SF thriller provides yet more evidence that Scalzi is a master at creating appealing commercial fiction.” – Kirkus Reviews

  • 20 limited edition copies of Zombie Baseball Beatdown. Signed by Paolo Bacigalupi.

ZombieBaseball

“Printz-winning Bacigalupi writing a middle-grade zombie novel? Yes, it really happened, and yes, it’s pretty darn good.” – Booklist

RiverOfSouls

“[Robert McCammon] nicely evokes America’s colonial past and deftly straddles the boundary between the explicable and the supernatural.” – Publishers Weekly

BeautifulBlood

“Beautiful Blood is a fitting swan song for Shepard’s wonderful, under-appreciated body of work, in more ways than one.” – NPR

PrisonerOfHeaven

You know these books are gorgeous. They always are.

“[A novel] with the blissful narrative drive of a high-class mystery… Ruiz Zafón is a splendidly solicitous craftsman, careful to give the reader at least as much pleasure as he is evidently having.” – The Guardian

  • 20 limited edition copies of The Adventure of the Ring of Stones. Signed by James P. Blaylock.

RingOfStones

“Blaylock captures the Victorian era with careening cabs, gas-lit streets, and gangs who are trying to keep [main character Gilbert] Frobisher’s group from its goal.” – Publishers Weekly

EndOfTheSentence

The End of the Sentence only really represents an evening’s reading, but be prepared to feel the fallout of this fairytale—perfectly formed from a hodgepodge of half-forgotten mythologies—for far longer than the few hours it takes to unfold.” – Tor.com

  • 20 sets of limited edition copies of Wool, Shift, and Dust. Signed by Hugh Howey.

WoolShiftDust

Hugh Howey’s books are amazingly popular, and for good reason. These limited edition copies of the series are beautiful, and signed by Howey himself.

“Howey’s Wool is an epic feat of imagination. You will live in this world.” – Justin Cronin

  • Auction: A set of One of Everything Published in 2014.

SubPressHeroShot

This is a big one, folks. One copy of everything that Subterranean Press published this year. 31 books total in this auction, many of them already sold out or out-of-print. There’s one of every book shown above, plus books by Lynch, Gaiman, and Butcher….

Subterranean Press has started doing this for us every year, and we can’t thank them enough. This beautiful assortment of books is up for auction, so bid early and bid often.

* * *

And we’re off. On our first day, we’ve already got 220 prizes on the lottery, worth well over $11,000. It’s time to change the world.

Signed Books from Subterranean Press

Worldbuilders-Logo_Web_Smaller

 This is a Worldbuilders blog.

Subterranean Press was the first publisher to ever sponsor Worldbuilders. They make some damnfine books, then donate them to Worldbuilders so we can share the wealth among the geek community and help raise money for Heifer International.

chicken 2

Simply said, Subterranean Press produces some of the most beautiful books in Sci-Fi and fantasy. Special, limited edition books, carefully constructed and printed on acid-free paper. Books that are built to last hundreds of years.

If they didn’t do good work, I wouldn’t let them publish The Adventures of The Princess and Mr Whiffe.

This year they’ve continued their fine tradition of sending along hundreds of signed books. That means you have a chance to win these books and many others simply by donating $10 or more directly to Heifer International on our Team Heifer page.

  • 20 signed, numbered copies of The Mallet of Loving Correction by John Scalzi.

Mallet-Correction

Scalzi runs what I consider to be the most intelligent, well-informed, and articulate blog in the whole of the interweb. His topics range from funny fluff pieces, to cutting satire, to vicious excoriations of political stupidity.

Honestly? When I want to know what’s really going on with a big news item I check to see if Scalzi has written about it, because I trust his no-bullshit opinion more than 95% of what’s considered journalism these days.

This is a great collection. I own several copies, and I’ll be giving them away as Christmas presents. All but one, of course, that one is my precious.

“Scalzi is thoughtful, witty, and occasionally profane, and he pulls no punches. It’s an impressive feat that so many of these essays retain such liveliness despite the passage of time and their movement to a book form sans links and reader comments. This book is probably only a must-buy for the Scalzi über-fan, but it is an entertaining and thought-provoking read.” – Laura Tarwater Scharp, City Book Review

  • 20 signed, numbered copies copies of The Night Boat by Robert McCammon.

NightBoat

This one is particularly special as it is completely sold out. If you don’t already have this book, this lottery is pretty much the only way you can get it.

The Night Boat is a fine piece of horror fiction in more ways than are immediately obvious. It is easy to see how McCammon so quickly became established as one of the finer horror writers working in the 1980s.” – Terry Weyna, Fantasy Literature

Tales of Majipoor

“These are simply tales of Majipoor and of people making their way in that world, in large events or small. But one of the joys of them is the unforced flow of the writing, the constant awareness that Silverberg is master both of his method and his material. They are a pleasure to read.” – Duncan Lunan, SF2 Concatination

Impossible_Monsters

This cover gave me the heebie jeebies.

Oh, and the editor, Kasey Lansdale? That’s the country singer. Yeah. Apparently she’s also an author, songwriter, actress, producer…  Basically, she does everything and probably has some sort of superpowers that she hasn’t revealed to mankind.

“Eschewing romantic vampires and shambling zombies, this collection presents monsters that do not merely kill, but suddenly and incomprehensibly consume, destroy, and reduce their victims to mere bones… Readers who stay up late wondering if there really is something out there will find these stories to be perfect nightmare fodder.” –  Publishers Weekly

  • 15 copies of Five Autobiographies and a Fiction by Lucius Shepard.

FiveAutobios

“Nebula winner Shepard (Life During Wartime) often steers his fiction toward faraway shores, but the bulk of this collection directly targets the American heartland. A painfully confessional introduction sets the stage for five ‘autobiographies’—might-have-been stories exploring facets of the author’s personal journey… This honestly titled collection deals well and satisfyingly with deep truths.” – Publishers Weekly

AmityvilleHorrible

“Fun, spooky and sexy at times, Amityville Horrible is a great addition to this much beloved series. With all the things that make Armstrong one of my favorite authors, it has softened the blow of the series coming to an end for me. Here’s hoping we’ll see lots more of these novellas.” – Vampire Book Club

  • 20 signed, numbered copies of The Last Full Measure by Jack Campbell.

LastFullMeasure

“I overall enjoyed the book and declare it a solid piece of fiction. Mr. Campbell is certainly a seasoned entertainer and on that count he excelled.” – John Guenther, SF Book Revu

  • 20 signed, numbered copies of Jewels in the Dust by Peter Crowther.

JewelsintheDust

“Crowther (Forever Twilight) unearths intelligence and compassion in the crawlspaces of the human heart with these atmospheric and emotionally intensive excursions between reality and fantasy. Versatility of theme and palpable mood breathe life in these modern myths of transformation and revelation. Genre staples (time travel, ghosts, fairies) are anchored in—and enlivened by—scenes of everyday people struggling to live and love and dream.” – Publishers Weekly

  • 20 signed, numbered copies of Baba Yaga’s Daughter and Other Stories of the Old Races by C.E. Murphy.

BabaYagasDaughter

“In this strong collection of 11 short stories, a mixture of reprints and originals, Murphy (Raven Calls) returns to the setting of her Negotiator trilogy…. Ranging from vignettes to novellas, these offerings grant glimpses of a much larger world, fleshing out its history and pleasing series fans.” – Publishers Weekly

  • 18 sets of Gentleman Junkie and The Deadly Streets by Harlan Ellison.

The Deadly Streets and Gentleman Junkie

Here we have two collections of short stories by Harlan Ellison, bundled together. Because really, you want to have both, and we want to make that happen.

“Ellison’s prose remains satisfyingly sharp and his insights into the fears and longings that drive his characters are even sharper and more satisfying.” – Publishers Weekly

  • Auction: Every Book  Subterranean Press Published in 2013

IMG_2888

This collection features one of every title published by Subterranean Press during 2013.

There are over 40 books included here, and over half of them are signed, limited editions. Many are numbered, slipcased, or out-of-print and nearly impossible to find anywhere else.

For those of you who don’t want to give yourselves eyestrain, this auction includes everything we mentioned above, plus more than 30 others: books by Tad Williams, Garth Nix, Kage Baker, Jim Butcher, Ray Bradbury, and Robin Hobb….

If you look at the auction description on ebay, you’ll note that it contains 38 books. This is because 2013 isn’t over yet. The auction winner will get the remaining 7 books in a separate shipment in January. And we’ll pay that shipping out of the goodness of our hearts.

That shipment will  include books from authors like Catherine Valente, Daniel Abraham, and… well… me. Patrick Rothfuss.

Let me make it clear, folks, just the cover price of these books is upwards to 3000 dollars. Some of these books are worth hundreds of bucks by themselves, and that was *before* they went out of print.

The full list of books, and more pictures, are all available in the auction description.

If you want the chance to own all of these gorgeous titles, you’d better head over here and bid.

* * *

There you go, folks, over 200 beautiful books, and all you have to do to get a chance to win is head over to our Team Heifer page and donate.

Remember, you can see everything we’ve got in this blog in detail over at the Lottery Library, and be sure to keep an eye on our eBay seller page, as we’ll be posting new auctions every Thursday.

Happy donating…

A Sale That Happens to be on Black Friday.

Let me be honest with you. I kinda hate the thought of having a Black Friday sale. It strikes me as a desperate attempt to be trendy and timely.

And as we all know, I am neither of those things.

But we were *already* planning on putting up our signed books for November. And since last month’s books sold out in about two hours, we were going to put up a new piece of Kingkiller jewelry we have from Badali, too. But we realized we might sell out of *those* pretty quickly too….

So we decided to launch a few other things we’ve been thinking about for months, because honestly, with all the donations coming in for this year’s Worldbuilders fundraiser, we need the shelf space.

And then we had so much momentum going, we decided to bundle a few things together at a discount, and put a few things on sale….

If you scroll down you’ll see a lot of details, but not everything.

If you want to see everything we have going on peek over here on The Tinker’s Packs.

And remember, all proceeds from these sales go to charity, so there’s a free warm fuzzy with every order.

*     *     *

Masks Books

Here’s the books, being lovingly packaged by the author himself after signing them.

This is the first book in a new series. They’re first edition too. That’s a lot of firsts….

You can order one here. Be aware, we’ve only got ten, so they’re going to go quickly….

  • Signed copies of Fortunately the Milk by Neil Gaiman.

Occasionally I like to help out a new authors by spreading the word about their books.

With that in mind, I’d like to offer up some signed books from a plucky up-and-comer called Neil Gaiman.

Fortuneately Milk Blog

I know you probably haven’t heard of him before. But personally? I think this kid is going places.

Again, supplies are limited, so if you want one, you should probably do it quickly.

  • Signed, limited-edition copies of The Dark of Deep Below by Patrick Rothfuss.

And finally from Subterranean Press:

20131129_033122

While it might not be the Patrick Rothfuss sequel you’re really dying for. It is a Rothfuss sequel book that you can actually buy right now.

Subterranean Press sent us 10 copies of the just-released second Princess and Mr. Whiffle book. We’ve got five of the hardcover trades, and five of the special numbered editions. (There’s only 2000 of those total. And they include extras that aren’t in the trade version.)

You can grab them from the Tinker’s Packs. Or, if they’ve already sold out, (or if you don’t want to pay extra) you can order copies right from Subterranean Press.

(And if you haven’t read the first book, we’ve got that on sale for a couple days too.)

  • Mystery Book Bundles from Prime.

Prime-Mystery-Bundle

The lovely folks at Prime have sent us a lot of books over this last year. A ton of books. Hundreds. So many books that we’re having trouble finding places to put them.

We’ve got novels and anthologies and collections. We’ve got books by authors like Philip K. Dick and Elizabeth Bear. We’ve got anthologies featuring greats like Neil Gaiman, George Martin, Holly Black, Cherie Priest, and Ursula K. LeGuin….

But here’s the problem, with our main fundraiser just around the corner, more books keep piling in, and we’re running out of space.

So we’re going to try something new. Mixed book bundles.

We’re going to package up a bunch of these lovely Prime books, then sell them to you at a huge discount.

If you buy a $30 bundle, it will contain over $150 of books.

The $50 bundle will have over $300 of books.

What’s more, none of the books will show up in both bundles. So if you buy both, you won’t get any duplicates.

We’re not guaranteeing more than 50 of these bundles, so if you want one, you might want to jump on them fast.

  • Talent Pipe Earrings

IMG_2861

The talent pipe jewelry Badali makes for us has always been one of the most popular items in our store.

But now, we’re offering them in another style – earrings.

The staff of The Tinker’s Packs have been getting questions about these for years, but now we officially have them.

Here’s the thing. We might sell out of this item. But if we do, you can just hop over and buy them from Badali directly.  And, since the fundraiser starts on Monday, they’re having their annual drive which donates 10% of your order directly to Worldbuilders.

The coupon codes will be good from December 2nd through February 1st.
  • US Customers – WBLDUSA13

US customers get free USPS Priority Shipping and 10% of your order will be donated to Worldbuilders.

  • International Customers – WBLDINT13

International orders get $10.00 off shipping and 10% of your order will be donated to Worldbuilders.

Note: This code is good for anything in Badali’s entire store, not just mine, so as soon as Monday hits, you can do a bunch of holiday shopping, save money on shipping, and know that money is being kicked toward a good cause, too.

*     *     *

So there you are. Mind you, those aren’t the only deals we have going. We have other things on sale or bundled into groups as a discount.

For example, we’re doing two calendars this year, and they’re already bundled together so that if you buy two or three, you’ll save a chunk of change.

Calendar-2-for

If you’d like to see *all* the new items, discounted bundles, and sale items we put up today. You can find them here.

Thanks for being awesome everyone,

pat

P.S. If you’d like to tuned to future Tinker’s Packs shenanigans you can follow them on Twitter and Facebook.  They do cool promotions on there that I don’t mention here on the blog.

Hundreds of Books from Subterranean Press

Subterranean Press has been with Worldbuilders from the very beginning. They were the first publisher to donate books to our cause, and because of that, they’ll always hold a special place in our hearts.

This year they’ve outdone themselves by donating hundreds of gorgeous, high quality books by amazing authors. Many of them are signed or limited editions. All of them are beautiful books.

Check them out.

  • 20 Numbered, limited-edition copies of Best Served Cold. Signed by Joe Abercrombie.

“The battles are vivid and visceral, the action brutal, the pace headlong, and Abercrombie piles the betrayals, reversals, and plot twists one atop another to keep us guessing how it will all come out. This is his best book yet.” — George R.R. Martin

“Once again, McCammon provides a colorful and well-researched depiction of colonial America, enlived by a rogues’ gallery of well-drawn characters. Hair’s-breadth escapes and the teasing promise that characters who appear to have been disposed of might resurface in future adventures make this a rollicking good yarn.” – Publishers Weekly

“[This collection of] six stories explore ground far from the high fantasy with which dragons are frequently associated. Fans of Shepard’s unusual and often powerful Griaule tales will be delighted to have them all in one place.” – Publishers Weekly

  • 20 Hardcover copies of Stephen King Goes to the Movies by Stephen King.

Stephen King reflects on the filming of five of his most popular short stories which were adapted into movies: The Shawshank Redemption, 1408, Children of the Corn, The Mangler, and Hearts in Atlantis.

Includes an introduction, his brief personal commentary, and behind-the-scenes insights by Stephen. What’s more, this hardcover edition includes full-color movie poster illustrations—one for each story—by Vincent Chong.

“Piracy meets politics head-on in this steampunk thriller, loosely linked to Priest’s much-lauded Boneshaker (2009). […] Though the unflinching portrayal of complex race relations is aimed at adult readers, Priest’s swashbuckling tale is also quite accessible for older teens.” –Publishers Weekly

From Publishers Weekly:“…there are enough incidents and reunions with old acquaintances to prompt Bear’s likable wampyr to insightful reflection on the shortcomings of immortality, and to espouse wisdom that comes from more than one lifetime of having to deal with mortals and their all-too-human natures.”

“Dying of the Light blew the doors off of my idea of what fiction could be and could do, what a work of unbridled imagination could make a reader feel and believe.”—Michael Chabon

“Longtime fans of Campbell’s Deepgate Codex (Scar Night, etc.) will cherish this dark little gem of a story; others will find it an excellent place to start.” – Publishers Weekly

“The end of the world has to start somewhere. In the summer of 2014, two scientific breakthroughs–one, a cure for cancer, the other, a cure for the common cold–seemed certain to change the future of mankind forever. What no one could have guessed was that these miraculous advancements would change humanity’s future by nearly bringing it to an end.”

  • 20 copies of Baba Yaga’s Daughter and Other Tales of the Old Races. Edited by C. E. Murphy
“Ranging from vignettes to novellas, these offerings grant glimpses of a much larger world, fleshing out its history and pleasing series fans.” – Publishers Weekly
  • 2 limited-edition copies of A Dance with Dragons. Signed by George R. R. Martin, illustrated and signed by Marc Fishman.

There were only about 500 copies of these signed, limited edition books printed, and they’re now sold out. But you can win a copy by donating to worldbuilders, because we’re just that cool.

“What’s A Song of Ice and Fire? It’s the only fantasy series I’d put on a level with J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. . .  It’s a fantasy series for hip, smart people, even those who don’t read fantasy.”—Chicago Tribune

  • One complete set of Subterranean Press donations.

(Not pictured above, When Will You Rise.)

We’re trying something a little experimental this year, and will be grouping some of our books into bigger prizes. That means one lucky donor win all 11 books from Subterranean Press as a prize in the lottery.

  • Auction. One complete set of Subterranean Press donations.

In addition to giving away one of each book as a prize, we’re going to auction off a full set of these books set of them to the highest bidder. That includes one of the signed, limited edition copies of A Dance With Dragons. So if you don’t want to trust your luck with the lottery, you can go bid on the full set right now.

Remember, for every 10 dollars you donate on our Team Page, you get a chance to win these books and many, many more.

If you’d like to see all the auctions Worldbuilders is currently running, you can find them over here.

Or, if you want to see the other items that have been donated to Worldbuilders, or learn more about the fundraiser itself, you can head over to the main page here.

Worldbuilders 2009

(Edit: Are you looking for the current Worldbuilders fundraiser? If so, I’m afraid you’re in the wrong place.

Click here for the current fundraiser.)

What’s that you say? You’d like to make the world a better place while simultaneously winning fabulous prizes?

Well today is your lucky day.

Heifer International is my favorite charity. It helps people raise themselves up out of poverty and starvation. All over the world Heifer promotes education, sustainable agriculture, and local industry.

They don’t just keep kids from starving, they make it so families can take care of themselves. They give goats, sheep, and chickens to families so their children have milk to drink, warm clothes to wear, and eggs to eat.

(Are you ready? I’m so ready. Let’s do it.)

This year we’ve got a couple different options for donating.

Option 1 – The Lottery.

This is the option most people will want. It’s simple. You hop directly over to the page I’ve set up at Team Heifer, and donate.

When you donate using my page at team Heifer, two things happen.

1. Worldbuilders will match 50% of your donation. That means your ten-dollar donation becomes fifteen dollars. If you donate two goats, it becomes three goats. And so on.

2. You’ll be entered in the lottery.

After the fundraiser is over on January 15th, we’ll have random drawing for all the swag that’s been donated by authors and publishers over the last couple months. More than a thousand books, DVD’s and CD’s.

For every 10 bucks you donate, your name will get entered into the drawing once. If you donate thirty bucks, your name goes in three times. Think of it as buying tickets, if you like.

We’ve had *way* too many books donated for me to post them all up at once. It’s a prize-rich environment, with over a thousand books.

So I’ll be putting up a new blog full of donated books pretty much every day or so, just to keep people from being overwhelmed with all the awesome. Make sure to check back often.

Last year we raised 114,000 dollars for Heifer International. I’m hoping this year we can do even better.

Dec 1st – Fundraiser begins.
Dec 3rd – 10,000 dollars raised.
Dec 10th – 25,000 dollars raised.
Dec 25th – 50,000 dollars raised.
Jan 1st – 76,000 dollars raised. [Last year’s total beaten! Woo!]
Jan 6th – 90,000 dollars raised.
Jan 10th – 100,000 dollars raised.

Well folks, we’ve got about five days left to the fundraiser, and I’ve re-set the thermometer for what I’m guessing is going to be the last time.

$106836.28 may seem like kind of a strange target, but I assure you it’s significant. It’s exactly twice the amount that people donated last year. If we can raise it, I think we’ll have pretty conclusive proof for the stunning awesomeness of us.

Personally, I think we can make it. But remember, the fundraiser is over at the end of January 15th. So if you’re been waiting to chip in, now’s the time.

Option Two: The Sure Thing.

Or, as I like to think of it, the Christmas Present option.

For those of you who aren’t interested in the lottery, I have some stuff you can just buy. All the proceeds will go directly to Heifer International.

  • Worldbuilders T-shirts. [Sorry, not this year.]
Option Three: Auctions.

This year we’ve decided to auction off some of the rarer items and specialized services people have donated.

We’ve got industry professionals willing to read your fledgling manuscript and give you feedback. We’ve got a limited edition Stardust ARC signed by Neil Gaiman and a copy of The Gathering Storm signed by Brandon Sanderson and the production team at Tor. We’ve got original manuscripts, software, and a rockstar’s guitar. Stay tuned for details.

A Quick Plea For Sanity

Lastly, I’d like to ask everyone to please read the instructions/directions carefully before they donate.

I know you’re excited. I’m excited too. We’re going to raise some money, make the world a better place, and end up with big warm fuzzy feelings.

But here’s the problem. If you’re *too* excited, you’ll end up clicking buttons all higgledy-piggledy, forgetting vital steps and leaving things out. (Especially when buying things with Paypal) Then you’ll send me an e-mail that says something like: “I’m sorry, but I forgot to include my shipping address/t-shirt size/signing instructions. Could you please fix it for me?”

I know I’m bound to get one or two e-mails like this. No biggie. But each one is like a cold drop of water eroding my warm fuzzy feeling. If I get, say, a hundred, I’ll have no warm fuzzy left at all. I’ll be left with nothing but a cold prickly feeling.

You don’t want to give me a cold prickly, do you?

I’m sure you don’t. And I’m sure that you’ll read the instructions carefully.

FAQ.

Have questions about the fundraiser? Most of them are probably answered over in the FAQ. Even if your question isn’t answered, I talk about Batman a bit, so it won’t be a complete waste of your time.

And, just in case you missed it, here’s the link to the Team Heifer donation page.

Rock on,

pat
