I’ve Been Nominated for a Quill Award.

More specifically, NOTW has been nominated for the award.

Huh. You know, I think that’s the first time I’ve used the abbreviation for my book instead of its actual title. I don’t think I like doing it… It feels weird, like cheating. Names are important things, you know.

Anyway, the news. I’ve been nominated for a QUILL AWARD. Don’t feel bad if you’ve never heard of it. I hadn’t either, before I got this news.

Apparently it’s like the Oscars, except it’s for the publishing world instead of the movie world. It’s only been around a couple years, but the award carries some weight, and the ceremony is a big black-tie dealio. Gala, or so they say. They show it on TV and everything. So the good news is that I have an excuse to wear my tuxedo. The bad news is that I’ll probably need to get a haircut, and probably lose some weight. I’m too shaggy and round to look dashing right now. I look more like a muppet than James Bond.

The Quills have 18 Categories. Naturally enough, I’m in Sci-fi/Fantasy, and I’m going up against some real heavy hitters.

Farthing: by Jo Walton

Getting to Know You by David Marusek

Brasyl by Ian McDonald

The Execution Channel by Ken MacLeod

While I haven’t had to read any of their books yet, I know their names. And I have to say that I’d be proud to get my ass handed to me by any of them. Right now my money is on Jo Walton, I’ve heard nothing but good stuff about Farthing.

That’s all for now, back to revisions on book two….

Best,

pat

Congratulations! And did you say it’s on television? How can I have never heard of a book award ceremony that makes it to television? Something about that is just strange.I do hope you get it though.

Congratulations :o)Yours is the first book I’ve sat down and devoured in one sitting in a LONG time. I’d have been seriously surprised if it didn’t attract a fair amount of Award Attention. Also… Name of the Wind is a great title when you’re playing the In Your Pants game… :oD

I say the heck with the tuxedo, wear your Joss Wheedon shirt! And isn’t it always the “odd, eccentric, plaid clad” author that garners the attention? Get your hair trimmed, but don’t change who you are.And take a shower too. That helps.

Same as k. I stayed up the entire night reading the book. It deserves a Quill award. The bad thing about the Quill is that it’s a popularity contest instead of selected by a panel of judges. But I think you’ve got it.

Actually, I’m pretty sure that each category is judged by a group of booksellers and librarians. It’s only the final “Book of the Year” category that is up for a popular vote. I think. pat

oops, sorry about the above…didn’t realize it left that…anyways…I heard about this several weeks ago( through my bookstore. Congrats, Pat.Other than NOTW, i’m not familiar with any of the books except Brasyl. Ian McDonald is high company to be included with. Here’s hoping you pull off the win!

Well, I’ve never heard of any of them, or even seen their books in the bookstore near my house (not surprising though, since the two near me suck). Anyway, good luck!

I believe you’ve a sweet shot. I looked at the covers of at least one of your book’s competitors, and even now I remain skeptical of them.
