Wait. What? What’s going on here? Is this some sort of glitch in the matrix?
No. No it is not.
I am, in fact, posting new blogs two days in a row.
I’m also, by no small coincidence, running around like a chicken with my head cut off. This is actually a good thing, at least in terms of me continuing my pursuit of occasional non-perfection. By which I mean it’s better for me to post up a pretty good blog that’s timely, rather than post up a perfect one a year too late.)
So despite the fact that I just posted up a *bunch* of news about the new calendars, book pre-order promotions, and other sundry just yesterday, allow me to share a couple cool pieces of news about things happening today:
First, this rad trailer for the upcoming audiobook.
I’ll be honest, when Recorded Books said they wanted to do a trailer for the upcoming audiobook of Narrow Road, I was indifferent. Trailers are cool for movies, because those are inherently visual mediums. Books are less so…
But when I saw what they pulled off here, I was impressed. This thing is pretty posh…
Here’s the alternate format version, for those of you who do your internetting primarily on your phones.
I’ll be honest, when I saw these videos, I asked who made them. I’m getting his contact info, because I’d love to have someone like this who could help me bang together a cool video of my own to show y’all.
In other audiobook-related news, I’m doing a livestream tonight on twitch with these two lovely human beings:

(Thursday the 26th at 6:00 CST)
As many of you already know, Nick Podehl narrates my audiobooks here in the US, and Rupert Degas narrates them in the UK.

(Like so.)
I’m *really* looking forward to chatting with them tonight. I’m an okay public speaker, but the Narration they do is nothing short of magic to me.
If you want to swing on by at 6:00 Central Time, you can catch our talk live. Odds are we’ll be doing some Q&A too, so if you’re curious about the subtle art of audio narration, this would be a great stream to show up to…
Lastly, just in case you didn’t already know, this is only the latest of the online conversations I’ve been having. We’ve done a bunch of lovely conversations over on twitch lately, and we have more to come:

Okay. I want to write more. But I’ll stop there. I have to go feed my boys and get ready for the stream.
Take care of yourselves, everyone. Look forward to chatting with some of you later on tonight.

It always freaks me out when I post a blog and there aren’t any comments at all.
well can’t have you freaked out Pat, glad to see some blog activity!
Understandable, I’d probably feel the same way tbh. I keep checking back for other peoples comments to not find any. I appreciate the blog posts, and am eagerly waiting to receive my copy of The Narrow Road. Look forward to more posts, imperfections and all!
No need, your post is enough. Thanks for the update.
It seems I’m late to the party. Anyway, it’s probably just because this whole website is a bit obscure. I followed a hyperlink from GoodReads and initially thought I wouldn’t be able to reply unless I made an account.
Long-time fan of your work here, glad to see you’re keeping busy. I don’t mean busy specifically working on this book series, mind you. Just happy to know that you’re still out there in the world doing things; it’s good for a body.
I read the Last Unicorn on your recommendation after having watched the film as a kid. It’s one of my favorite animated movies. Gave me a whole new appreciation for the thing, and now I love them both. Recently dug into R.A. Salvatore’s stuff, too; good junky fantasy for Dungeons and Dragons fans. Got any more recommendations?
I hope this message finds you well.
Freaking out not needed – we’re just giving you breathing room while the news percolates and our excitement builds!
Well…at least in my case I just became aware of it. I always rely on Facebook to notify of new blog posts because I’m a dinosaur and Facebook is getting increasingly less reliable to actually tell me when you post. I always love how the praise you receive from your peers in your blurbs is just so impressive. That’s quite a list of individuals to give glowing accolades.
This is exciting Pat! I loved the Lightning Tree from GRRM edited Rogues and I’m excited to see it expanded!
We are here professor, it might not be a formal class at UWSP but we are still excited to learn something new about the world you are cultivating for us.
Eh. Don’t freak out. They’ll come
I’m so excited to read The Narrow Road Between Desires! I’m in the process of applying for graduate school (cognitive neuroscience) amidst a hefty semester (biochem, physiology, neuroendocrinology) and cannot tell you how happy I’ll be to take study breaks and read the new Patrick Rothfuss novel.
The Name of the Wind is my bible—I’ve bought and given it away at least 10 times. I even gave a signed copy away. Your writing is lyrical, your plot is brilliantly mesmerizing, and people need to experience it. Every scene that Kvothe plays the lute rips. Me. UP.
I gotta say it, fuck those rude ass motherfuckers who keep whining about book 3. Take care of yourself.
Good luck with the new release and all that it entails!
Sincerely,
M. Boileau
I love audio books and Nick is one of my favorite narrators…for those of us that can’t catch it live…how can we view it after the fact? I have heard of twitch but never used it. I do all of my reading via audio so this would be super interesting. I’m so looking forward to the new book…love Bast!!
FWIW I get pissed when you get dumped on about book 3…don’t get me wrong, I will be ecstatic to read it…but don’t have a sense of entitlement when it comes to artists…it’s a creative process…not a contract.
Thanks!
Raeann
That trailer really made me want to put off everything on my TBR and read The Name of the Wind yet again. Also, I’m very excited to learn that pre-orders will be signed!
Tears of joy – so happy for you!
Boo!! Happy spooky night and congrats on the upcoming baby! After watching that trailer I started to wonder if Auri will feel jealous of Bast’s fancy novela… :) Wishing you much success!
As a fellow perfectionist can I just say I feel what you mean so deeply about the struggle to just let go of getting it exactly right and being okay with something being ‘good enough’ when the goal is to communicate – it’s so so hard to send things into the ether…I am writing this on my phone now so it would be too frustrating to tinker with it and therefore I am more likely to send it!
I really enjoyed reading this blog post, I like the honesty of it and it’s so nice to see behind the scenes of the collaborative projects you do.
I’m so glad you posted this because it came up in my Google search when I was looking for more info on The Narrow Road Between Desires after seeing it promoted for pre-sale on audible. I am very excited for the 14th of November now! Will try to tune into the twitch livestream if I can!
Posso imaginar que uma onda imensa de amor deve estar chegando até você por esse anúncio. Estamos animados com o próximo livro.
Sabe quando será lançado em português, no Brasil?
So glad to read the Degas is on this as well! His characters are brilliant!
Also, what is susquinian? And why do they hibernate during summer?
You’re the best.
Alex
Quick question for you— are all preorders signed, even if from your local bookshop? I ordered mine already and was just curious. Also, thanks for the updates! Nothing has made me so happy in quite awhile than hearing from ya. I’m very much looking forward to The Narrow Road Between Desires. Cheers, and take care!
Now I’m even more excited to listen to all of the other books and stories again for like the 5th time… just to be ready for Nov. 14. :-)
You’re a treasure, Pat Rothfuss. <3
Woo, exciting.
I do have a question—I can’t find answers anywhere, and I hope it’s not impolite. But do you think you’ll post that book 3 chapter soon? I’m excited for “Narrow Road,” but also terribly excited for the chapter. It’s been a couple of years.
If it’s rude, please feel free to not approve this comment or delete it.
Nick Podehl is a saint. Discovered him through your work and subsequently listened to the rest of his work. So glad he’s still on the team.
Good information today!
Awwww – I’m commenting on the wrong blog entry but I come here second so just to say your little lads and you are so cute. Can’t wait to read the novella!
