For those of you in the Boston area, here are the details:
I’m going to be at Pandemonium Books at 7:00 on January 3rd. If you need directions or need to contact them, you can get the details HERE.
I’ll be reading and answering questions for about an hour, (or until we get bored.) Then I’ll sign some books, hang out, and chat. Cool thing is, Pandemonium stays open until 10:00 AND it sells games as well as books. So if there’s time after that, I just might try to kick somebody’s ass at Catan….
It has been scientifically proven that I cannot be beaten at Catan. If anyone claims to have beaten me, they are lying. If they aren’t lying, then some outside force must have influenced the game, thereby rendering it statistically insignificant.
In short: Bring it on.
Back to the signing: since I’ve scheduled it on such short notice, I’d appreciate it if any of you would help spread the word. Especially if you live in the Boston area, know folks around there, or are visiting for the holidays. Thanks much in advance…
In other news, I seem to have topped the Onion’s list of Best Books of 2007. Yay Me!
This particular list means a little extra to me because I grew up reading the Onion in Madison. This was way back around 1990, WAY before it went national. When I was in high school, my dream job was to write for them, and now they’re writing about me.

Hey Pat,>>Thought you might be pleased to hear that you’ve been awarded “Rookie of the Year: Best Debut” as well as the “MVP Award: SFF Author of the Year” on < HREF="http://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.com/" REL="nofollow">Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist<>. :)>>Hey, you need to plan a trip to Atlanta to sign a few books!
Heh. That’s cool. I should drop Pat (The other pat, not me) a line and thank him for that. It’s such a lovely compliment. (complement? Damn, I wish this thing had a spellchecker.) >>I’d love to come out to Atlanta Arevanye, but it’s really hard to schedual a trip just for a signing. Travel expenses plus a hotel room make it really costly in terms of time and money… >>That means that I really can’t afford to make a trip out there until my publisher pays, or someplace like a library or a university, or a convention invites me and helps to defray some of the expenses in exchange for me doing a workshop or a reading or something like that. >>On the other hand, if you know of a place willing to do that, I’ll be down there in two shakes….
Well done, Pat!>Did you use your influence to do away with number 4 on the list? Was it a really terrible book? >Btw, is it too soon to make plans for August? I can poke at Emily so maybe we can work on that “defraying” around Gencon. :-)
Yes. Book four angered me, so I had it disposed of…
I second Atlanta!!! I have an extra room at my house! =) DragonCon, maybe?
Pat, you need to rent a car and come pick me up in Maine ;) Whaaaat? My company is sooo worth it ;) Ask Andy.
bored as we can get at the south pole, settlers becomes a good distraction. i play at least weekly. so long as we’re playing regular or seafarers, i’ll take you on as a scientific experiment. that is, when i get back stateside in a year.>>knights and cities i’m still 50/50 at.>>the others? apparently you dominate the northern hemisphere, but the southern is mine.>>muhahahaha.>>-nathan
Hoi Pat,>>congratulations for topping one more “Books of 2007” list! I’m glad that <>The Name of the Wind<> gets the appreciation it deserves. :)>>When I read your post about the Boston signing I did quite a celebration dance all over the room and made my girlfriend look funnily at me. Since I’m from Germany, I didn’t expect to meet you anytime soon, publishers don’t usually fly my favourite US authors over to our part of the world. But I happen to be on vacation these weeks just a ten minute walk from Pandemonium Books, and looking forward to meeting you! To spread the word, my beloved also forwarded your event details to the MIT Science Fiction Society, so I hope that at least some geeky people will turn up for the signing. >>As it so happens, I’m also an avid (tournament winning *g*) Catan player, so I’d be delighted to take you up on your challenge and test your theory. Especially since there seems to be a chance to distract you with talk about Firefly and Neil Gaiman. ;)>>Have a good trip over to New England!>>Peter ‘Aragos’ Schmitt>>>P.S. Do you sign paperbacks? I use to buy them so I can read while I travel (they usually fit into my pockets ;). If you prefer hardcover, I’ll get one of those at the bookstore.
Aragos: Ah hell, I knew I was going to get into trouble shooting my mouth off like that… >>Thanks much for helping to spread the word to the MIT people, I really appreciate that… >>I don’t have any problem with signing paperbacks, except that there shouldn’t BE any paperbacks yet. If you have one, I’d be really curious to see it….
Hoi Pat,>>well, in this case my idea with the paperbacks that I carry around in my trouser pockets didn’t work out. I ordered the “paperback” from amazon.co.uk while I was in London and got the trade paperback that’s just as big as the hardcover (I think you had a picture of that in an earlier post that illustrates the issue). As a trade off, I think the cover is really well done, and with such a story inside I wouldn’t care about the looks anyways.
Paperback and hardcover were released at the same time outside the US, right?>>Pat: Do you get advance copies of foreign prints? That’d be cool… I bought my son an Arabic picture book from Dubai once(it’s about a love-struck camel, I think). I can’t read a bit of it, but it’s still pretty cool to have around.
So this morning I was incredibly pleased with myself about being the first person to comment on your blog. Now I find my comment is nowhere to be found, and the blog includes some new text about your alleged mastery at Catan. What dark event are you attempting to conceal, Mr. Rothfuss? Is there a crushing defeat that haunts you day and night?
That’s odd. I didn’t know that updating the blog would cause comments to get deleted…. >>Thanks for the heads-up, Major. Rest assured that the deletion was not part of a major government conspiracy.
Ahah… Mr. Rothfuss’ blog update has apparently created a rift in time (a “time rift”), in which the blog was allowed to duplicate and re-post itself. I’ve seen this effect before; it’s never pretty.
Ahh.. Settlers of Catan. The only game where it’s good to have wood for sheep!>>Oh, and any plans on doing Dragon*Con?
Hiya Pat!>> Gotta question for you….. I was trolling the internet, looking for some new reads, when I came across your book as being on the top 10 for Publishers Weekly. Congrats!!! >> My question to you is: should we assume you already know about said accolades, or would you like us to shoot you a link to the website so you can celebrate yourself? Thanks – and again, congrats!
Judy:>>Thanks for asking. Posting that stuff up here in the comments section is probably best. That way everyone can see it if they’re interested, and you can rest assure that I’ll read about it too, even if I don’t respond. >>>But, by and large, don’t bother trying to send me a message. A lot of times when something big happens, like the recent Onion article, I end up getting 30 emails about it. In a way, it’s nice, but it also tends to clutter up my inbox. and I already have about 150-200 messages a day to deal with.
I own both the board game and video game of Catan. I’m a Master! If the opportunity ever presents itself, I’ll gladly play such a worthy opponent.>>I see someone mentioned DragonCon. I’m curious to know if you’ll be going to GenCon 2008, too. You were wonderful in the seminars this year.
Oi’d be greet glad tae meet ye! >>Oi bring sum of ye buks tae sign an pahaps moi friend.>>:)
A friend of mine pointed to this ‘lolbook’ and discussion. I thought you might be interested.>http://jimhines.livejournal.com/294587.html>>Also, next WisCon, I’ll buy 10 copies of your book if you can beat my roomie at Settlers. Cash.>>-Keith Watson-
Lovemasher:>Thanks for the link- It made me laugh and laugh!>Pat won’t admit it outloud but I bet he’ll giggle like a school girl over it too!
2009! I have to wait until 2009! Well at least I have my excuse for getting pissed on new years eve now!
A friend of mine gave me the Onion today and that’s how I found out about your book. When I got home I went to Amazon and saw that Robin Hobb gave it 5 stars. Then I found out you’re from Wisconsin and play Catan (which I stink at) – so I thought I had to post. I’ll be stopping by the local Barnes before dinner tonight and picking up your book. I can’t wait to read it – I’m just sad it took me this long to find out about it. Congratulations!
What is this Catan I keep hearing about? I feel I have made some sort of gaming faux pas by being unware of it.>>Happy New Year, Pat.>>Happy New Year, fellow Rothfussites (Rothfussans? Rothfussese? Rothfussians?)
Which ones grow on the cieling and which ones grow to the cieling matt?
Rossfussites always grow from the ground up, feeding off the drippings of intellectual run-off from Pat’s blogs.>>I’m glad we cleared that up.
I like <>Rothfussians<> best. :-)
I also vote for Rothfussians.>>Just stumbled across the review on Amazon, bought the book locally, and finished it all in one day.>>Wow! Loved it. Came here to see when Book 2 might be making an appearance – and found instead a (ok, an) hilarious blog, which has made me laugh out loud, twice, just in the December postings.
Rothtafarians?>>I’ll drop by to say hi tonight, Pat, assuming my tauntaun doesn’t freeze to death on the way. Jesus, you didn’t have to bring your native weather <>with<> you.>>Also, if you’re looking for someplace to eat while you’re in Central Square, I have two words for you: Mary Chung’s. Best Szechuan outside of actual, y’know, China. Alternately, the All-Star Sandwich Bar kicks inordinate amounts of ass too.
No no. Rothfusstarians! Rothtafarian doesn’t encapsulate the whole name. Gotta have that.
Aargh! Is it REALLY 2009?
Good luck in Boston this evening! I am sure you will wow the crowd.>>Btw, Emily is planning on getting in touch with you soon about speaking at the shiny new Central location.
Hey, Pat.>>I just wanted to let you know that I had a marvelous time at the signing on Thursday night (I was the one who asked way too many questions and got my book signed to ebay). You just happened to come on the coldest night in… well… as long as I can remember, at least. We hope to see you around here again sometime soon!>>By the way, I’m trying my hardest to recruit an army of fans for you among my friends. If only I can get them to read the book…>>Thanks!>>Sincerely,>>Allen>>P.S. I’m just curious: why don’t you want Peter Jackson directing your (potential) movie? Just not your style? :)
Stumbled across one of the best < HREF="http://anaedream.com/2008/01/03/pat-rothfuss-will-kick-your-ass-if-you-dont-like-his-book/" REL="nofollow">pics of Pat<> so far.>>In my mind, the caption says “Love my book, or die trying.”
Hmm, I might give you settlers of cataan claim, but I remember beating your ass in settlers of canaan a few freaksmas back.>>So tempted to post that picture of you in the spaghetti dress, but we’ll leave that for another day.
Pat, if you ever come to Cologne, prepare for a dusk-til-dawn Catan session! Including seafarers…>>We’re looking forward to your German edition of NOTW this fall.>>Cheers, Frank>Phantastik-Couch.de
I (third I think) a trip to Atlanta! I’ve got a spare room too, lol.
Oh this is so messed up. I didn’t even know about this event until today, but I’m trapped in North Carolina all month anyway. I live in Boston! I would have come and begged an advance copy of book 2 or something. I seriously can’t wait till next year. That’s cruel. When I don’t get what I want, things like < HREF="http://www.scarletrosefilms.com/Hard%20Bitten/index.html" REL="nofollow">this<> happen.>>These things will keep happening until book 2 is within mt grasp.
