YES!

This is awesome. Seriously.

I’ve known about the fanfic community for years now, though I’ve never myself gone swimming in those dark waters.

In fact, not too long ago someone apparently had a dream where I was acting as a councilor for fanfic-traumatized characters. They wrote about their dream over HERE on Deviantart….

While that is cool, it’s not what I’m excited about.

I’ve known for a while that it was only a matter of time since someone did fanfic based on The Name of the Wind. I’ve also known that it was only a matter of time before someone did some Yaoi  fanfic.

As soon as this idea got into my head, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Every couple weeks it would pop back into my head and I’d do a quick google search to see if anything was out there yet. I’d keyword search “Kvothe Bast” “Kvothe Yaoi” “‘Name of the Wind'” yaoi.” But there was never anything…

It’s been months since I went looking. But tonight I was doing an e-mail interview and made a joke about it. Then I googled: “Bast Kvothe kissing.”

Bingo.

I have truly arrived on the scene as a fantasy author.

Happily yours,

pat

Very odd, but funny too. It’s amazing how fertile people’s minds are when you give them just the seedlings of ideas.

I cannot read, or even look upon, yaoi. My mind literally shuts down, and I find myself waking up an hour later in a strange place as if from a dream. As I frantically look around me with increasing bewilderment, I come to the shocking realization that during that whole past hour I had been staring at a bowl of melting ice cream. It’s like an embarrassing allergy or something.Welcome to the shores of darkness, Pat. You have truly made it. *_____*

That’s actually a fairly decent slash, as such things go. Characters stayed in character (beyond the… gay sex thing…) and she didn’t decide that they are TRUE LOVE FOREVER. Congrats…?Gird thy lions against the inevitability of fanfiction.net. The map ends, and there are monsters in the water.

oh…my…god…pat, not only has your book brought back my faith in fantasy epics (in between harry potter and twilight I’m starved for good epics) but you are probably the funniest person I’ve ever read. I am now officially addicted to your blog.CHEERS!

Hah! Oh man this amuses me to no end. Since I have also travelled the deepening ocean which is ‘yaoi fanfiction’ I must say that while you celebrate now, just wait. In no time at all fanfiction sites will be seething with half-pan stories, complete with a plague of rancid grammar and words which make you question the validity of the english language all birthed mutantiously from your golden book. Of course, in that frothing sea of drabbles, graphic smut and sweet fluff there will be the odd gem. Like little diamonds scattered haphazardly like fickle stars across a beach.Oh dear, I just know I’m going to go walking along that beach now, looking for stars. (I happen to rather like a good well written yaoi fanfiction now and then, just so damn hard to find them. Most arn’t that great)Anyway, congrats!~Dyn~

Ahahaha! You, sir, are one of a kind. For some reason, I never expected you to actively search for yaoi fanfics of your own writing. Kudos to you, for being so positive about it. (I know some authors are pretty against fanfics and all…) And congratulations on being in the “cool” crowd. =D (*is amused*)

A Kvothe/Bast slash pairing never even entered my mind until after reading that post. But, upon consideration, it doesn’t actually seem all that implausible to me. As far as slash fanfic goes, that was pretty well written. And, hey, it’s a long time until the second book is out, and I need SOMETHING to keep me going ;)

I just want you know that I had never heard of you before I was directed to this post, but I am buying a copy of your book purely because you are pro-fanfic and that sends my heart all aflutter, knowing that if I fall in love with your characters no one will sue me for expressing that love the best way I know how.(Well… also because your book sounds awesome.)

The Quill. The Librarians. And now, the cherry on top of it all, yaoi fanfiction!Like amber_mane, I can appreciate a bit of well written fanfiction now and then. Though I can only imagine the feeling of the actual author popping in and reading it!

haha Pat, your amazing…. I’ve always looked at Bast and Kvothe’s relationship and saw a more romantic one. I actually don’t understand why other people don’t see it. XDBut that’s me, I’m a huge fan of any kind of subtext, and between Kvothe and Bast.. there is quite alot of it. (if you ask me anyway) Keep on rocking

I see this is perhaps a good time to admit I got into your novel thanks to what I saw as Kvothe/Bast implications. I work at a Borders and the book had been staring at me from the front table for awhile. I picked it up to give it a try while being bored running the registers and soon thought ‘hey, this is slashable!’ and so kept with it. I ended up liking it beyond that enough to buy it. Which is rare for someone living on a Borders salary and able to borrow books for free from them. So kudos to you for being ok with the yaoi fans ^_~ You are indeed cool, I say, cool!

Wow, where have I been living that I never even realized yaoi existed….. wow. But I do think it’s cool that you’re down with fanfic, I think that it is a good first step in learning to write, since the characters are always the hardest part to get right, learning the world building is time consumming but easier. Of course…. there a still more than a few writers out there that are still writing fanfic in JRR’s world, and just changing the name. Congrats on the new pinacle of your success….. and if I’m not the first, let me be the next to say good luck on the Hugo ballot…. if you’re not on it, it’s a crime.

Congratulations, you must be so proud.I mean, it’s certainly a milestone….I have to ask though… are you in fact one of those (while thoroughly heterosexual) guys who worry that gay guys aren’t checking them out?Read in a column by a male journalist who spent his whole life mourning the fact that no guy’d ever tried to chat him up until one day his wife finally was able to point out some guy checkng him out…Personally, I have a female friend who is a total lesbian magnet. Last convention I went to her with, I actually had to tell some girl she was dating our friend (also a girl – I am too I should mention) before she left her alone… Lucky I’m such a freaking liar.*rofl*…If I ever get published, I too hope someone gays up my characters. I mean, if they made at least one of them a drag queen that would just be *THE BEST*.It’s not enough for someone to make them gay, they’d have to make them flamboyant…

Anyhow, you seem very cool, Mr Rothfuss, and since the post that linked me here called your book ‘absolutely magnificent’, I think I’ll have to check it out.

*fangirl squeal*I’m actually impressed and relieved by the quality of the fanfic. My heart starts crumbling when excellent books like yours become subjects of terribly written slash. But in any case, congratulations, Pat. You’re in the big time now, with JK Rowling and JRR Tolkien, lol.

Pat you broke my heart.I found your amazing book on Friday (we wont go into the squeels of delight when I looked up after reading it) and can only say ….Do we REALLY have to wait till April?Still its not so far away for a sequel. And youre writing is more then worth it.However….to also be willing and able to find amusement and compliment in yaoi fanfiction????You are BRIALLIANT!I followed the link laughing and have to admit it is fairly well done. Your comments and the following reply’s were even more entertaining. At least I know that while I am waiting for the next book, I can find just as much entertainment from your blog!Congrats on being one of the most amazing and open minded writers around!Joeline

Like Alexis, I picked up your book because mostly because it had a potential slash implication, as well as it being fantasy…*coughs* I have to admit, though, I’m glad that you’re okay with the whole yaoi thing and all. Personally, a lot of the fanfiction that I’ve read was slash, so…Besides, if people are writing slash fanfiction about your book, that means you’ve struck it big time. Lol.When I read this, I almost laughed my head off. Because honestly, I’ve never heard of an author who looked up yaoi about his/her book. But I applaud you for that, because if you didn’t, I would have never read that fanfic. :3So good job and keep on writing! *gives thumbs-up* Until then, I’m going to be shuffling through Amazon for the next couple of months in hopes that your next book can be pre-ordered there.

Oh, I love fanfiction! I was actually on fanfiction.net the other day after reading this, and I figured I should see if there was a Name of the Wind section. There is! A couple people wrote short little stories under the Kingkiller Chronicle. I figured I’d tell you :)By the way, your book is honestly better than any that have ever come out. I think that, if people are at all intelligent, it will one day be more successful than Harry Potter, Twilight, and Lord of the Rings combined.…:)From Jazz

I was just directed to this post, and shall now be trawling around the portuguese bookstores looking for your book.

No, not *just* because you don’t mind fanfiction written; the series was recommended by a great friend of mine with excellent taste in fantasy… But we both also love well-written fanfiction, and finding an author that doesn’t mind even the yaoi/gay aspects of it is truly rare.

So instead of just downloading the book, I’ll be buying it. :D

Pat, my respect for you grows every time I learn something new about you. First the book itself, then the picture of you on wikipedia (you’re wearing a t-shirt that says “Joss Whedon is my master now”), then your blog in generall, then this post.

And Kvothe/Bast? Well, that’s pretty much cannon!
I can also clearly see Elodin/the guy in the Crockery, Wilem/Simmon, and Hemmes/Brandeur.

A personal favorite of mine is also Kvothe/Elodin. ^^ Heh.

Looking forward to WMF with ridiculus enthusiasm.

Slash is freaking awesome. So are authors who like Fanfiction. Anne Rice, who is generally awesome, hates FanFiction with something that could most accurately be described as “the power of a thousand burning suns.” Or starts, if we wanted to be scientifically accurate.

    I found a more NC-17 rated FF at http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4647006/1/
Let’s face it, NC-17 makes everything better. It’s like being part of an exclusive club.

I brought a copy of The Name of The Wind today, which means the friend I borrowed my previous copy finally gets it back. I’ve done nothing but read, read, read since I got home. I actually think I cried at some stage because this books is so awesome. I am crying from your awesomeness.

    Dear Patrick Rothfuss,

This is why I love you.
I stumbled upon Diana Gabaldon’s great rant regarding fanfiction, shortly followed by George R. Martin’s own post on the subject – which had me thinking. “What does my number one favourite author think, then?”
So I googled it – and found this. A little burst of joy regarding a yaoi fanfiction that made me laugh out loud.
Thank you for not taking this so bloody seriously. Thank you for keeping your humour intact despite all the pressure that your (undoubtedly) huge fanbase must put on you. Thank you for not worrying about being politically correct; and first and foremost – Thank you for not being afraid.

    Just… thanks.
    Rock on.

    /Erika

I love fanfiction…though some are totally rotten…and I’ve tried a few slash FICA myself ;) Have to admit you’re the first author who I’ve ever come across to be okay with fanfiction…which is awesome by the way! I loved your book..and yes..even as I was reading it I couldn’t help but imagine that Kvothe and Bast could have something going behind the scenes…know…I’m such a pervert…But I don’t have the guts to write a Kvothe/Bast fanfic so far…coz I’m some one who likes to maintain the same style….no OOCness ( though it can be fun some times lol)…Unfortunately, I’m having a little trouble finding Wise Man’s fear in SriLanka :( Will stop rambling…
    All the Best Pat!

This post has made me the HAPPIEST PERSON IN THE WORLD.

I ship this so hard. You can tell Bast feels things (that are probably not reciprocated) for Kvothe, plus I am pretty sure Bast would fuck anything with a pretty face – – so not too hard to make that leap. I’ve written a few fics but I was too scared to post them; now that i know Patrick is searching I may put some things up! Uh my god be still my heart, my ship is ALMOST canon.
