Ask the Author #5: Where can I buy the new version of the book?

Since I posted up the new cover for The Name of the Wind, folks have been asking me where they can buy a copy.

Doubtless some of you want a copy of this book because it is clearly A Novel. I also know a lot of folks want this cover because the style will more closely match the hardcover for The Wise Man’s Fear:

I understand your desire, and I feel your pain. I wanted this new cover too, and even though I’m the author, I still had a bitch of a time locating it. I had to hunt around for weeks before I managed to get my hands on one.

The truth is, I don’t know where these new copies will be showing up. These are the books that currently live in the warehouse. If a store orders a book from the warehouse, this cover will probably get delivered to them. But if the bookstore orders from a distributor, the distributor might not have this fifth printing in stock. They might still have first printings, or third printings. It’s a crap shoot.

However, since so many people were asking about it, I worked something out with a guy I met out in Seattle last year. His name is Shawn Speakman, and he runs a business that sells signed books over the magical interweb.

So, when I head out to Seattle at the end of the month for Norwescon, I’m going to swing by his place and sign a bunch of books for him. If you want one you can go order a copy at his store.

Please note that I’d be more than happy to personalize your book for you, free of charge. Just make sure you enter what you’d like me to write when you your order your book.

Now, the more astute of you that have doubtless already clicked on the link and noticed that Shawn is charging 29.95 for the books. Five bucks more than the cover price. This isn’t because he’s a greedy son of a bitch. No. Shawn is a high-class gentleman. I know this because Shawn is giving me that five bucks to help offset the cost of my plane ticket out there. If not for that, I wouldn’t have been able to justify making the trip out to the coast.

Lastly, as an added bonus for those of you who have been dying to get hold of a copy of the Illustrated, Annotated, College Survival Guide, Shawn will be selling some of those too.

Those will be signed by me, and each will have a cool doodle and a signature by my longtime friend, illustrator, and co-conspirator, Brett Hiorns.

Later all,

pat

Pat,When last I checked (i.e., now), the Amazon page for <>The Name of the Wind<> featured the new cover. Do you know if that means you actually get the new edition when you order from Amazon, or are they just teasing us?

Haha, Shawn’s awesome. If you don’t read his blog, you should. http://www.shawncspeakman.comIt details his adventures in writing and publishing, and also includes the prologue to his newest piece of work. There’s a lot of really cool insight there to the publishing business if you’re interested in that sort of thing.Oh, and he’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.Peace!Mark

Pat… is that a real copy of “The Wise Mans Fear” you’re holding? Can’t remember that a have seen you ->holding<- one before. It's like, in your hands. Can you clarify please? Because I’m getting a strange tingly feeling across my spine that’s going way up in head and it is telling me that the thing you are holding is a real copy of “The Wise Mans Fear”.Or maybe it’s telling me that I’m stupid and I missed the topic in which you first showed the picture and explained it all…Hmmmm…

Haha maarten. That picture comes from a cruel, cruel joke Pat decided to play on us all a few months back. That is in fact only a sample cover that he slipped onto a copy of The Name of the Wind. He did this so he could take a picture of it and pretend it was done and ready. This was back before he announced the new release date. Don’t be fooled. As of now, the release date is set for April, 2009 until further notice.

Joeseph: Amazon is a crapshoot too. I ordered a book from them a week ago, and it was third printing. Maarten: Yeah. That’s just a promotional cover wrapped around The Name of the Wind.

Why must you taunt us with images of the second book…

Taunt us with fake images of The wise mans Fear???The really cruel joke would be if it was a real copy of the Wise Man’s Fear. And all this time when Patrick says he is editing it he is actually practicing his evil laugh for when he lets the cat out of the bag.(poor kitty)ps Pat, I was wondering if you have given any book praises yet. And maybe what the worst one you got for the name of the wind was.

Thanks all. I DL the picture and it said: Fake-Wise-Man%27s-Fear-722015.jpgSo much for being a detective. ( I’m screaming in agony, pulling my hair out while my knees rest on the wet pavement and the pouring rain eases my painful head)OK, that might be a bit overdone. But still… dammit!p.s Sienged, you are so right, that would have been like…. the cruelest joke ever.

Aw, sweet, new cover signed. I’m ordering one straight away. Ha, is there a limit as to how long a personalised message could be?“My dear friend, Captain Joe, just give up the dream. You’ll never be published in any profitable way. Yet do not be disheartened, young padawan – one day, one day soon, you’ll be able to sell this on eBay and make a fortune anyway. Love, Action Pat.”And The Signed Page is also offering Small Favor by Jim Butcher – how does one go years without knowing of this amazing website?Think I’ll pick up the college survival guide, too. All the best,Joe

“A Novel”? Oh no! Now I have to break my longstanding resolution never to buy a book with the words ‘A Novel’ on the cover! Movies don’t put the words ‘A Movie’ on the DVD case. I don’t find the words ‘A Sandwich’ on my Subway sub wrapper. Why do writers (or publishers?) feel compelled to put ‘A Novel’ on what is clearly a novel? I suppose I can make an exception for you, Pat. But this series is it! No more ‘A Novels’ for me!

I bought a copy for a friend of mine’s birthday (Pat, you ARE the gift that keeps giving!) from Amazon.com and they are shipping out the new covers. I’m holding it hostage until he returns a game I lent him, so I have it now and am trying hard not to steal it. I’m going to get one for myself to mail to you, methinks.Pat, do you like bubble baths? Perfume inspired by the writing of Neil Gaiman? What can I send as a bribe?

Hey just stopped by to say I absolutely LOVED your book. I was meandering around the fantasy/sci-fi section looking for something new to read and I stumbled upon your book. The name was cool as was the cover so I read a little bit about it and decided to pick it up. I can’t tell you how fond of this book I am, it’s so great to have a character who’s not some terminator and can plow through everything even though he’s just a child. You really FEEL how vulnerable Kvothe is as a child/young man and how little he knows about everything and how desperate his situation is. Anyways, looking forward to the next book.Sincerely,Erik
