Home again, Home again, Jiggedy Jig.

Merciful Buddha, it’s good to be home again.

Don’t get me wrong, traveling abroad was a wonderful adventure, and I have many exciting stories to tell. But I got sick a few days after my London signing/reading and after that the trip was not so much fun. My memory of that last week blurs because I was either in terrible pain, under the influence of powerful drugs, or both.

Take my reading in Manchester, for example. I’m dimly aware that I might have said something about wanting to mess up Joe Abercrombie’s pretty face.

Like I said. Powerful drugs.

Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know that stories and photos will be forthcoming. I’m brimming with things I’d like to write about: Taxis of various nations. My inappropriate encounter with Stonehenge. A list of historic landmarks where I have touched Sarah’s bottom….

I would have posted some of these stories sooner, but internet access was not easy to come by traveling in the UK. One of the many things I never appreciated about Stevens Point before was how easy it is to get wireless access here. There are three coffeeshops downtown with free wireless. No, wait, four. Five. Hell, my neighbors have free wireless, though I suspect that’s an accident on their part.

Yessir. This small town boy sure found out that the world can be a cold, unfeeling place. More specifically, I learned that it can be a place that tries to charge you 22 Euros a day for Wifi.

Personaly, I have better things to do with my money. Specifically: Ale and whores.

Man I really need some sleep.

But first, more drugs.

Until later,

pat

I’m glad to hear your adventure went well and that you’re home again safely. If the worst thing that happened was an illness and expensive internet, that’s a fantastic holiday!

I’m eagerly looking forward to the forthcoming stories from your travels…

    Hi Pat,

sorry about the european bug causing you problems. I hope you will be feeling better soon.

WiFi prices change from Hotspot to Hotspot. 22 Euro per day is surely off the scale. I travel a lot in Europe and already start complaining at 15 Euros per day. Hotels above that will be blacklisted and are not booked by our company again. We ourselves build a WLAN in Kiel with 100+ Hotspots and charge 10 Euro per month (limited to 10GB).

Unluckily the goverments all over europe are putting up a lot of regulatory pressure (lawful interception, data retention, liabilities), so that free (as in beer) hotspots are becoming rare.

    Sincerely yours, Martin

P.S. Amazon just informed me that “Wise Man’s Fear” won’t be published at all :-) (in german: Nach Auskunft des Verlags bzw. Herstellers wird der folgende Titel leider nicht mehr aufgelegt: Patrick Rothfuss “The Wise Man’s Fear”).

Aww…. hope u feel better. I also have a quick question. I remember a while back you said there would be a chance for one of you readers to get there name in the book. I probably missed it or am too late, but was there anymore news on that?

For some reason it makes me obscenely happy that you a) mentioned Joe Abercrombie (as I have read his book as well) and b) can list all of the historic sites you’ve touched Sarah’s bottom at. It’s possible that I am very weird and find entertainment/enjoyment out of odd things.

Dang, I thought everything was free in Europe. Free and better. I’m glad you’ve spilled the beans. I recollect that in Prague they had Internet cafes everywhere, but that was back before the WiFi craze (you know, in 2004). Next European trip, put Prague on the list. You won’t regret it.

One of the great things about travel is that is allows you to appreciate that which you may take for granted (like wireless access).

Sorry to hear you got sick, although with the number of places you traveled, time zones you crossed, and people you crossed paths with, it is not a surprise. Get well soon!

I am looking forward to the pictures from your trip as well. I know how busy travelling can keep you, and sometimes you forget to take pictures. However, I am sure that the ones you took are worth sharing.

Funny you mentioned Joe Abercrombie. When I bought Name of the Wind, amazon suggested that it might be a good idea to order The Blade Itself, too, and so I was doomed to adding two new authors to my always-must-have-list.

Anyway, glad you survived Europe, despite your illness. I am looking forward to reading about the places-of-bottom-touching and other amusing insight. With or without drugs, it’s great to read whatever pours out of your fingertips anyway.

The beautiful thing was that you didn’t just mentioned Joe’s pretty face, you OPENLY GOADED your fans to mess it up. Sheer poetry.
    P.S. Glad you’re feeling better!

    Hi Pat –

Welcome home… I’m glad you made it safely. And while getting sick is NEVER a good thing – just be thankful it wasn’t Sarah who caught the bug. See? A silver lining in all things. :o) :o)

Abercrombie’s trilogy was too full of holes for me to really enjoy it. The story is unique but distractingly illogical.

Wow, I hope you feel better soon, the sicky-ick is not fun. I remember how tough it way to get any kind of wireless in London last summer, we had to settle for speed typing at an internet cafe (20 minutes at a rate of 3 pounds initially then 50p for every ten minutes after)

In any case, I hope your Stonehenge experience was better than mine (typhoon in progress)

Hey Dude – We’re all glad you’re back, and that Europe was cool, and that you enjoyed ale and whores and bottom grabbing and all those other good old American pastimes. I also don’t mind if you carve up Abercrombie’s pretty face as long as you leave his hands intact so he can keep writing great books to fill our time while we’re all waiting for Wise Man’s Fear (haha). Seriously, man, get us that next book…..

Home again, Home again, Jiggedy Jig… can’t believe you said that, as I thought I was the only one with it stuck in my head. My kids got tired of hearing it every time we would return home after some ‘adventure’! Soon, you too will be able to annoy and embarass your children by saying such things! Glad you two had a good time, are home safe and sound, and Congratulations to you both.

You gave me an idea. Wizard compiles an updated book of spells for the beginning magician, correcting the errors of previous works. Book proves to be popular, gaining an audience among not just neophyte dweomercrafters, but hedge wizards, magi, shamen, witch doctors, witches, and wicces alike.

So popular his publisher sends him out on a book tour. A book tour filled with adventures, misadventures, encounters, derring do, and fantastical stuff galore. What do you think you could do with this?

    Hi Patrick,

Glad to hear you made it home in one piece. Was great to meet you and Sarah at the Manchester Piccadilly train station. Hope I didn’t startle you when I walked up =) If you ever make it to Lexington, KY for a signing, be sure to post it on here…

Just read your book last week. Wow! I was hooked after the first two pages about the three kinds of silence, and I knew this book was going to be a good one.

In my mind, it registers as one of the top 10 or so fiction books that I’ve read in my 4 plus decades, and I’m an avid reader. A very refreshing and different take on the fantasy genre. Can’t wait to read the rest.

PR, you’re awesome. Just want to say that.

That said…your immune system is not-so-awesome. I have only been following this blog for about 6 or 7 months and this is at least your third major illness!

Take better care of yourself, man. It is probably stressed related. Personally, I think you should start drinking alcohol. Not professionally or anything….just an occasional nightcap. It is a great tension/ muscle relaxer. Exercise during the day and kick back a few at night and your sickness problems will be gone.
