Miscellanea

It occurs to me that I haven’t mentioned the current season of The Guild on the blog yet.

This makes me feel strangely guilty, as if I’ve failed to uphold my end of some unspoken agreement we have here on the blog. Namely, that I will occasionally remind you of some cool things that are out there, so you can enjoy them.

Included in the category of cool things, of course, is The Legend of Neil. I think I already linked to it when I posted up the interview I did with Sandeep at Comic-con. But what the hell, you can have another link. It’s free.

Lastly, for those of you that don’t make a habit of checking out my tour page or the events I post up on the Facebook fan page. I’m at Madcon this weekend in… well… in Madison, obviously. Or maybe not obviously. I suppose it could be a convention for people who were mad….

Then, on Wednesday night, (the 29th) I’m doing a little panel for the Wisconsin Book Festival, also in Madison. My talk is going to be in the overture center, which makes me feel all posh. I’ll probably fancy myself up for the special occasion in the only way I know how: by taking a shower and making sure I’m wearing pants. I also plan on limiting myself to only the most erudite cussings. (They must have at least three syllables or a Latin root.)

That’s all for now, folks. Have a good weekend.

pat

P.S. Since I’m throwing out links to random cool things. Here’s a link to an article about Joss Whedon that I very much enjoyed.

I’ve never been to a con, going to have to make it a point of doing so sometime in the near future. Will of course make sure your attending before I book the flight, want to make sure I get to meet your beard. Er, I mean, you…

I’ll second the whole need to go to a con sometime soon. I feel as if my geek creds are lacking because I’ve never been to one. I’ll have to check out that article as soon as I can get to a computer, my blackberry didn’t like the link to the Joss Whedon at all. Hope you have a glorious day Pat.

a billion links indeed, i have to say, i like that quote in one of the links you sent,
“But there in that room was the first time I actually felt like any sort of hero. If you are looking for a reason for the man I would eventually become, if you are looking for a beginning, look there.”

    liked that line

One day, when I actually have an income of my own or even just when i’m old enough to drive i’m also going to have to go to a con. Of course if i want to go to one that your attending in the US I’ll also have to get a nine hour flight – thats just a little glitch in this great master plan of mine!

I have to catch up on Neil; I’ve been following Ye Olde Guild weekly but keep forgetting its fouler half-sibling.

Enjoy MadCon; I wish I could be there to see Harlan Ellison.

Just a suggestion on the topic of links, when you have so many cool ones to check out maybe you could set them up to open in a new window/tab so that every time someone clicks on one they don’t get navigated away from your wonderful blog? I’ve never used wordpress but there should be a way to make that happen in the html by adding “target=”_blank”” to the link code right before the , there’s prolly even a more user friendly way to do it.

You can do this yourself. Either click on a link with your mouse wheel (middle mouse button) or hold ctrl and click on the link. In most browsers either should open the link in a new tab and keep the current tab in focus.

    Dear Pat,

I know you like live music. You’ve posted about some excellent artists on your blog in the past. So I am wondering; how do you feel about fast, friendly punk rock? My band, Fortune and Glory, is playing in Madison tomorrow (Saturday) night at The Frequency and since you will already be in town for Madcon, I thought I would extend an invitation. I can guarantee a few lavish amenities including guest list access (saving you a total of $5) and a few free drinks of choice (on me of course). They also serve up the best frozen pizza known to man (also known as Emil’s).

The Frequency is located downtown around the square, right next to the Shamrock, so it would be a short drive for you coming from the hotel. The show starts at 9:30pm and we will probably go on around 11pm. You can find out more information at the link below.

It would be an honor if you graced us with your presence.

On a more positive note, ever since you first mentioned Legend of Neil I have saved the site to my favorites, I actually just watched the 4 episodes into season three before coming on the site.

You were right, the Joss Whedon interview was very good. Alas, I’m still mouring Firefly. By the way, where did you find your Joss Whedon is my master T-shirt? I think I need one too.

Hello I’m Stefan, been lurking around the Blog for a couple of months now.
Anyway is ‘The Guild’ any good? The only webseries I’ve watched so far is Red vs. Blue, wich is mostly comedy. What is ‘The Guild’ about?

    Also can’t wait till March.

    • Constance
      Posted September 28, 2010 at 9:06 AM | Permalink

The Guild is about a small group of online Role-players in a MMORPG similar to WoW. It’s about their real world hangups, issues, and conflicts and how they all get in the way of their all important gaming time. You know, things like husbands, kids, and real jobs. All those things can really cut into your necessary raiding time!

It’s really quite funny especially if you play any online rpgs. The last season introduced Wil Wheaton as a bad guy and he’s hamming it up this season as Felicia Day’s love interest. Kinda. Sorta. It’s complicated.

        Thank you for the info!
I already finished the first season, its kinda funny.

Although I haven’t read any books of Wil Wheaton (I know, I suck…)
It sounds intresting to see him as a bad guy.

So, I recently made the mistake of re-reading NOTW. Dang it….now i’m all eager and excited for the next book! Which reminded me that you said when you would be finished with the second book, writing it i mean. So i went and checked page after page after page of blogging, laughing as I remembered reading a few of them, seeing the various shirt ideas, etc. Then I came across it, and my heart was overjoyed!
    To quote..
“So that’s part of the news, that I’ll be finished writing The Wise Man’s Fear by September.”
Can it be?!?!? This glorious month has but one day left in it!! One glorious day!
Of course, there is still the following words to take into consideration…
“But here’s the rest of the news: that means that the book can’t come out until March of 2011.”
Bah, no matter. Just knowing it is done is enough to help keep me going…
I look forward to news of the books status being updated to ‘Complete’ and I wish you the BEST of sleep when you actually catch some! I wonder just how many people are bringing up this quote to you these days….*ponders while hitting the ‘Post Comment’ button*

I would not get your hopes up until Pat himself says “Persistent Phobias Common to Betesticled Fellows of Advanced Experience” is finished. He may still be working on it and not want to disappoint us all with regrettable news just yet.

And I would not blame him. He is not merely writing, after all, but “[CONJURING] THIS INTREPID FANTASYSCAPE WITH TEARS BLED FROM THE WISDOM-WEARY EYES OF FIFTY THOUSAND IMAGINARY MAGICIANS” and all that. If he needs to perfect his tale, I certainly do not want to grudge him that.

Hi Patrick – new to your blog. I’m a huge Joss Whedon fan and due to his creations I’ve gained a number of great friends over the years. I’ve been to a number of cons ( all the UK side of the Pond, though) and met loads of great fans and his lovely actors. James Marsters and David Boreanaz are personal favourites and I’ve been lucky enough to have had breakfast with them on one notable occasion! Am into GRRM fantasy recently – A Song of Ice and Fire – which is being filmed by HBO at the moment in my home town of Belfast, and we’re all very excited! So I’d love to read your book and am ordering it today – and I’d love to know when the sequel (is it a sequel?) comes out.
And thanks for a very interesting blog – I like the recs for children’s fantasy books. My son is 14 and I wonder what to get for him next? A Song of Ice and Fire is a bit too sexual for him yet and he’s read Eragon etc and of course LOTR, and some others I can’t remember, but I wonder if you could point me to a list or something for his age group?
Good luck wiht the next book and I’ll let you know what I think of the first when I read it!

While we’re on the topic of miscellanea, is anyone else extremely excited to see Neil Gaiman and Sir Terry Pratchett together and up to nefarious deeds that will later be revealed? How high on a Gaiman-Day scale must this be, considering Gaiman himself is involved?

ok.I read the book in 4 days, and because I work, but it would have done in 2 days.congratulations.itś great book. my English is very bad. forgive me. anxious to go to read all our comentearios and publish the fuck up the second book, do not go unless I die before you can read the book¡¡¡one thing, I do not know why but I do not like the character of Denna, perhaps because it gives me a bad feeling, and I think it cruel at some point in history, (but it is normal to hate any character in a book). as I see it is extremely honest, me too I will be: o have a great memory to describe the scientific aspects in great detail and in concrete ways, or is a terrible liar :). well it does that, or I just believe things you say, or assault me doubt their credibility. is very good with that aspect.

I’m running like a freak for 25 years, I know. but I do not like me, and I liked the book I felt the need to ask in a loving and kind one thing: WRITE THE second BOOK , PLEASE¡¡¡¡¡
well, I will comment on his blog. I read in detail its publications. atenta.I comments will be critically. is that just now finished reading your book and I had to say. thank you very much for reading this freak and his new fan. kisses

I have to say I never really thought about the relationship between Denna and Kvothe before (despite reading the book twice). I suppose that, in a way, Denna never seemed real to me before (this despite me being a somewhat flirty and attractive female).

So… with that link… this is the first time I really thought about Denna… her name changing – like the wind?!?! How did I miss that? I assume Kvothe will know her true name sometime (if not it will be sad). So… the whole name of the wind thing… maybe the heart of the story is Denna, and I missed that. (Because that through line probably has more emotional impact in the end.)

It makes me even more eager for the next book! :)
