Guess what showed up in the mail today?
It’s the Finnish translation of The Name of the Wind. Huzzah!
I suppose I might get jaded about this stuff eventually. But the truth is, I still love seeing the new editions of the book. I love trying to figure out how to pronounce the title. I love seeing which map they end up putting in the front. (Usually it’s Nate’s version, but not always.) I love flipping through the book and seeing if I can figure out what’s going on.
And I *love* the versions with new covers. For this one, I’m willing to bet that the artist actually read the book. I can tell because of how the lute looks. The pegbox isn’t cantilevered, and there’s only three pegs on this side (so four on the other side would make seven.) I also like the hood of his cloak.
That’s all for now, T-shirts will be showing up soon. So keep an eye out here if you’re looking to vote on which ones are your favorite…

Thats so exciting Pat! Keep up the good work in all languages!
And I will totally buy a shirt :)
I wish we could choose from the amazing selection of book covers you have all over the world for the U.S. versions, though I must say your book’s covers have been quite exceptional. I can’t wait to get my hands on tWMF next year!
I’m actually starting to get little annoyed. It seems like all the other countries are getting much cooler cover art.
That’s a beautiful cover, evocative of the feeling of the book, to me.
Anyways… the way to pronounce this, roughly, is:
Tuu – like “too” but with a softer “T”
Len – same, “Len”
Ni- “Ni” … think “We’re the knights that say “Ni!”
Mi – like the “Ni” above, but with an “M”
So, “Too-len Ni-mi.” Damn, can’t wait for the days when we can just record it and paste :) A verbatim translation of the Finnish title is “The Wind’s Name — Name of the Wind”. So they didn’t do one of those translator tricks where the name has turned into something totally different.
Cool. Thanks so much.
Great explanation. I was just going to say “Tool-N” plus “Nimmy” and in “ninny” but yours may actually make it sound like proper Finnish. The cover is very pretty but it looks oddly YA to me, I wonder how it’s marketed in Finland…
and = as. *sigh* sorry. I will learn to make sense on the first try one of these days…
Well, I am a girl that judges every book by it’s cover. (which has actually worked out very well I might add). This is a book I would pick up for sure, however, I am partial to the American Cover… it has that dark mysterious quality that is so intriguing.
Sweet, the t-shirt finalist, would be awesome if mine was one of them with me being an art teacher an all, lol. But if not that is ok, looking forward to seeing them. Been waiting for awhile but I know you are busy with revisions and getting TWMF out, and probly had a hard time narrowing them down because I know I would. Thanks for being so awesome Pat
It is a beautiful cover. I love that you post them all so we can share in the art :)
Thanks for sharing, can’t wait to see what people came up with for the t-shirt contest!
kvothe’s hat looks a little like link’s hat, don’t you think?
It’s part of the cloak, I believe. Just a long tail to the hood. Very cool.
I dig this cover most of what I’ve seen. Doesn’t overstate the mood or setting (the Canadian [or is it North American?] cover is a tad “DARKNESS AND DANGER!” for me) and gets most of the particulars right without throwing them in your face. Finally a cover that doesn’t portray the main character as a massive barrel chested worldeater.
That long tail on the hood is called a liripipe. (It’s medieval.)
I was thinking, all that beautiful cover art, and wouldn’t it be cool to see an entire art book with all the covers of Pat’s books.
One can dream.
Until that day, I’ll just keep dreaming of t-shirts, liripipes, and WMF.
XOXOX
Diana
Heh. It kinda does.
You mean Neil’s.
The cover looks amazing. It reminds that the Hebrew version of the book just came out. They didn’t make a new cover though.
Ok. I know this has nothing to do with this post but are you ever going to put the Bestiaries up, or is your version of soon in the celestial sense and I should just quit waiting on it? Just curious.
If you want, I could push back the release date for book two and spend some time updating that section of the website…
Hey…now…even as a joke that is just earth shatteringly not cool. It was a joke right ? RIGHT ?
We always call that sort of thing “Kidding on the square”.
Not really a joke, more like a way to wink at someone and tell the truth at the same time.
Oh …so it’s like a metaphorical / allegorical / thingymajiggum ?
Thanks, I was wondering why Pat would post something like that when some dimwits would actually take it seriously…..
I was just curious. You don’t have to threaten me with pushed back release dates. From now on I’ll just keep my mouth shut and continue clicking on that link hoping and praying until something shows up.
Wow this cover is really beautiful. I love all those autumn colors. They make for a nice atmosphere.
Great job Suomi!
That’s probably the most beautiful book cover for NotW I’ve seen up to date. Awesome.
Talking about lutes…here’s a website with some nice ones and other interesting instruments, too: http://www.yourworldinstruments.com/Lute-s/58.htm
Definitely a terrific cover. Beautiful, apropos, makes you want to find out more.
Although, to be fair, it doesn’t crack me up the way the Italian cover does.
Pat,
Congratulations on the new addition (or should I say, edition) to your family!
Also, though I’m not sure exactly how to express this, looking at your map (linked above) evokes a really strong desire to go back to that world – a sure sign that you’ve created something significant and worthwhile. I’m really looking forward to book 2, and can’t wait for you to reveal more of this amazing story. Thanks for the persistence and dedication.

Hey Pat,
The new edition looks sweet… congratulations on spreading the goodness to yet another language.
Random question on cover art – do the artists get a set commission for each cover? Do they get a tiny little amount of royalties? Just been curious.
Keep up the awesomeness.
Ok Pat, i know you have been busy and i can understand that. I can also understand how peaple can be a Di** about this, but there just jelous of your amazing skill and they are being impatient, i can understand if you dont get a chance to read this. Hi Pat,
So I know that this has nothing to do with your post but I’ve noticed something in the past couple of months. You and Neil Gaiman tend to update your blogs on the same day. It’s almost a guarantee that if you update your blog, then Neil Gaiman will update his, and vice versa. I think you two have some kind of deal together for fans that you’re not telling us.
We’re actually the same person. I’m Neil Gamain wearing a ridiculous fake beard and using a midwestern accent.
I’m surprised nobody has noticed yet.
Well, I have never seen you two together.
(Actually, I have never seen either of you ever. Damn you, Science, and your insistence on exploring alternative hypotheses.)
Kudos to the artist who did the cover–it’s beautiful and oddly fitting. I love the wistful atmosphere it conveys, with the autumn leaves and the clouds in the sky. I have a thing for water colour stuff and it’s used way too little for book covers these days (or it feels that way).
Hope the editing and revising for book two is going well :-)
Hi Pat!
Couple weeks ago I truly was dancing from joy when I saw that there was finally a Finnish version of the book as I have been waiting for that since 2007. I agree that the cover is very beautiful indeed. The artist has paid a lot of attention to the mood of the book and watercolored covers look always stunning. The cover is absolutely the best part of the Finnish edition.
But I’m sad to say that the translation is awful. I had read your book at least 10 times from cover to cover (it’s probably my the most loved favorite book alongside the lord of the Rings) before the translation and therefore I had great expectiations for it. Then they were crushed. Seriously it almost made me weep. There are not only translation mistakes but also incorrect grammar, crinkled pages from the press and the style of the writing is from time to time altered greatly.
Seriously, I have started to make a list of the mistakes that I will send to the publisher. I just hope that they will look it over and correct those mistakes for the future edition. I’m too ashamed to recommend this edition to my friends… Which is a real pity since your book is such a masterpiece.
PS. I’m seriously considering sending my Finnish edition overseas for signing. You do still that, right? Is there something Finnish that you particularly would like to have?
Now, I just want to thank you for writing such a wonderful books.
Thank you!
The cover made me happy. You made me sad.
Thank you for this, I will have to seriously consider not buying this copy. Such a disappointment…I really wanted to make this book a gift to some friends. Maybe i’ll wait for a recommendation from you before I go out and buy a Finnish version. (My Finn is not good enough where I can understand the fabulous nuances of reading)
So irritating when they botch a translation…
Dang.
Has anyone else out there read the Finnish version? I always value a second opinion….
Hey Damatris,
I live in the US and have been trying to find the Finnish version online to purchase but I am having terrible luck. Is there any way you can contact me by email, I have a couple questions for you if you have a moment! My email is [email protected].
Thanks!
That’s a beautiful cover. I like the american paperback too… (the blueish one) which is at least tasteful. I may have had a very hard time even picking the book up in it’s original form.
Do you have a page somewhere displaying all the covers? You ought to get some lackeye to take care of that for you :)
I really love the looser, softer and more “expressive in a realistic way” this cover looks — like the Wind does play a part in it!
Sweet cover Pat! If I could read Finnish I’d probably get it, i have the Jap version :D
Oh and for anyone asking how soon something is going to come out; I got this from Blizzard when inquiring about a patch. Perhaps you could tweekit ;)
SOON:
“Soon” does not imply any particular date, time, decade, century, or millennia in the past, present, and certainly not the future. “Soon” shall make no contract or warranty between Blizzard Entertainment and the end user. “Soon” will arrive some day; Blizzard does guarantee that “soon” will be here before the end of time. Maybe. Do not make plans based on “soon” as Blizzard will not be liable for any misuse, use, or even casual glancing at “soon.”
Hahaha I thoroughly enjoy your Blizzard comment. I am an avid wow player and hate blizzard and their definition for soon…
Another cover added to the list of awesome. Maybe someday all the covers will be collected into a nice book of paintings. Or a calendar. I would really dig a NOTW calendar.
Yaay Finland! My dad’s side of the fam is completely finnish (couple generations of Michigan copper miners up in Ironwood, mostly), and so this makes me happy.
Also, the cover is fantastic.
It is a fantastic cover. Pat, could you please tell me the name of the artist? Oh, and happy (belated) birthday to Oot, too!
Finland finland finland…its the country where I want to be!
Pony trekking or camping, or just watching TV
Finland Finland Finland…Its the country for me.
You’re near to Russia
so far from Japan
Quite a long way from Cairo
Lots of miles from Vietnam
Perhaps Name of the Wind will make its way into the fine lexicon of Russo-Finnish Filmwerks like Jack Frost, or Snow in June.
just sayin…aim high.
Nice… That cover gave me the goosebumbs:P
Gratz with taking on Finland!
Hello Pat!
I am the Jessica’s Spanish friend. Suomi language is pronounced as is written.
My ex-wife was from Finland :)
Congratulations!
I think this is my favorite one so far. To me, it’s very in tune with the book. Although in this country, I think it would probably be taken for a YA cover if one didn’t know better. Anyway, it’s beautiful.
I have a dimensionally smaller hardcover version which features a Kvothe that kinda looks like an angry Eric Stoltz holding a lute…
Wow, this is like half a year after this was posted, but I was thinking about buying the Finnish version of NOTW for some fantasy-loving folks I know. Can anyone tell me where this can be done? Has their been any progress on the translation inconsistancies? Also, is WMF available yet in this language?
Thanks for many hours of amusement and joy spent reading your books.
