So about a year ago when we were voting on which t-shirt designs were going to get printed, I cast my vote just like everyone else.
Imagine my surprise when one of the shirts I loved went straight to the bottom of the pack and stayed there.
It made me glad that I’d decided to put things to a vote. But still, I was sad that I wouldn’t get a chance to see that shirt made.
Fast forward to a couple months back when I got a flurry of messages from people asking if we would ever print kid’s shirts. Or baby onesies.
So, behold:
We decided to turn my favorite design into some onesies you could buy to support Worldbuilders.
If you want to see a closeup of the design, here it is:
What I really like about this image is that it relates a lot of The Name of the Wind without being in any way language dependent.
In fact, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this shirt would be way easier for kids to appreciate because they could identify the pictures themselves.
So as soon as the onesies came in from the printer, I showed one to Oot.
I point at the lower-leftmost speech bubble. “What’s this?” I ask, thinking, this one should be pretty easy. He knows what a heart is….
“Crab,” he said without any hesitation.
“Oh,” I say. “Okay.” I point at the book. “What’s this?”
“Choccate!” (Chocolate.)
“And this?” I ask, pointing at the cloud.
“Skis,” he says immediately. The word is completely clear. When did he learn what skis are?
“And this?” I point at the musical notes.
“Shopping cart.” Again, he’s absolutely sure of himself.
“Who’s this in the middle?” I ask, pointing at Kvothe himself.
“Issa boy,” he tells me. “Shouting.”
If you’re one of those “pics or it didn’t happen” people, here’s a video where Valerie quizzes Oot about what’s on his shirt.
His answers are a little different there, as he’s obviously gained a clearer understanding of the shirt after re-reading it a couple times.
So there you go. If you’d like to buy a onesie with a boy shouting about crabs, chocolate, skis, and a shopping cart, today is your lucky day.
Because we have them available now in the Tinker’s Packs.
We’ve priced the same as our t-shirts at 20 dollars. I wish I could sell them for less, but the onsies are actually way more expensive to buy than the t-shirts. The printing is more expensive, too, because it uses so many colors.
Rest assured that all the money from the sale of the shirts goes directly to Worldbuilders. It’s not like I’m spending it on hookers and PEZ.
And just for one last piece of cute, here’s a picture of Oot wearing it.
This picture cracks me up a big because Oot looks like such a smooth player in it.
“Hey sweetie,” he says. “What? This shirt? Just some old thing I threw on. You know, this scene is played out. What say you and I go back by the couch and I show you how high I can stack some blocks….”
One more time, just in case you need it: the link to the Tinker’s Packs.
Lastly, a final heads-up for those of you in Northern Michigan and the UP. I’m doing two signings in those parts this weekend, and I probably won’t be back in the area for a while.
Catch me while you can….
pat

I’ve been craving some rothfuss-blog-loving lately and have been checking back almost each time I jump on the net (mostly to procrastinate uni assignments…)
As usual, able to make me laugh after a long day. Thanks :p I love Oot’s reactions, and your take on his “smooth player” dialogue. Haha.
That video was super cute. I love how sure he is about what he’s saying.
Yeah, he’s not lacking confidence. That’s for sure….
Thats a perfect shirt for kids, I totally agree! Also, chocolate is a great goodness and it seems Oot is an optimist – he can find chocolate anywhere…
Sadly, my little one is outgrowing onesies (they are REALLY impractical for potty training) or I would have bought it without thinking!
Best reason to be up for a 3 AM feeding ever!
Oot is so precious! And he’s speaking so well!!!!
It is a wonderful design! I would wear it even as an adult (though in shirt form, mind you). I love the video! Oot is growing up to be a very intelligent child! No doubt taking from his mother and father. Thanks for sharing Pat!
Im curious , I’d like to hear a rough estimate of how many signatures you have signed.
Sincerely , The Guy With the Lute (Houston Texas signing). =)
Roughly one billion.
Wow, how many kinds of cute is Oot? He is so articulate, too… I bet he never stops talking – and about chocolate, no less!
Definitely a heartbreaker, that one.
I’m glad you used little anime Kvothe for something; he was my desktop picture for about six months after he was first revealed for the t-shirt contest :)
I think you mean a crab.
It was my desktop background, too. I’ve saved the picture, as it’s just too cute for words. Of course, on Oot…it’s too cute for descriptors period, be they words, unintelligible babble, interpretive dance…you name it!
Your son looks like a Lannister in that last photo. Is there something about you and Sarah we haven’t been told?
Wow, you need a ‘preview’ feature. – Kindly ignore the ‘a’ proceeding ‘hookers’. Thank you!
You have the cutest kid ever. He’s very articulate for someone his age, too. He’s going to be such a heartbreaker; imagine all of the little girls on the playground chasing him down.
Too bad shirts aren’t being printed with that design; I totally want a shirt with a picture of chocolate, a crab, a shopping cart, skis, and a yelling boy.
Well, if you won’t be back in Michigan for a while, I’m glad I’m already going to one of the signings. See you in Petoskey. I can’t wait for your showdown with Ernie Cline. :)
If enough people ask for one, we might do a limited printing of the shirt for adults….
Oh, I’m asking. I’m definitely asking. That’s the only piece of merch I would consider buying.
OK, I created an account just to say that I’d buy this in a heartbeat for myself. Please pretty please. Does it help that I’ve been prosthelytizing left and right? (yes, I had to lookup how to spell that.) I consistently talk to strangers in the fantasy section and point them in your direction. No joke.
OK, and I went to ThinkGeek and suggested they carry your gear, so don’t be too surprised if you get a call.
So… adult sizes? And if not, how much do I have to donate and/or spend to not feel guilty and risk lawsuits by making my own for myself? I already purchased the Eolian bar shirt for my friend for his birthday. :-)
So…. I think Oot said “sheep” for the wind. Which not only sounded likely to my ears, but also my eyes.
– Jen N.
Yeah, I heard “sheep,” too.
+1 to Sheep. That’s sort of how I heard it too.
+1 to Sheep. Looks like one too! That video is so darn cute.
Yeah. Like I said, he changed his answers between when I talked to him and when Valerie shot the video.
The lines that the blowing cloud makes are curled at the end, so they do look a little like skis….
could it be that he was saying ‘kiss’ because it looks like the cloud was blowing a kiss, and it comes out sounding like ‘skis’?
That video of Oot makes my ovaries tremble. SO. PRECIOUS.
“…makes my ovaries tremble.” That’s one of the best quotes I’ve read in a long time!
Ummm … is this an acceptable excuse to develop baby fever? Mine is too big to wear the onsie, but he would look so cute in the shirt … Maybe (if you love me muchly) eventually you could ask them to print it in children’s sizes too?
seconded ‘n’ whatnot. This was by far my favorite shirt, and I was all sorts of astonished that it didn’t make the print.
I can just imagine Oot trying to tell a story about the boy yelling cos a crab has hold of his skis/sheep whilst he is in his trolley eating chocolate – could be a book in there somewhere…….I love kids – couldn’t eat a whole one though – mine is 13 now and I am just an embarrasment – my fave when she was little – malcolm powder for talc and demnim for denim….gotta love em
Of course he thinks it’s a crab, sheep, etc. You’re making him look at it upside down!
You’ve got a very good point there!
Pat, maybe you should post the image upside down, and we can see what we think. I’ve tried turning my head around, but I’m getting a crick in my neck. . .
I actually turned it around and it definitely does look MORE like a crab or a shopping cart :D
But nonetheless, upside down or not, I guess that most kids would not have figured out the chocolate etc. with such a confidence!
Too Adorable.
I have a lot to learn about naming pictures, I got 4 wrong.
PEZ is pretty good, wouldn’t blame ya.
WORLDBUILDERS FUNDRAISER PROPOSAL -Release the original first 2 chapters of “The Name of the Wind”? I think many of us would love to hear more about Skarpi and the Chronicler back story, and it would raise money. If an e-book is easier, people could download free e-reader applications without owning an e-reader. Just a thought.
It’s always a joy to read your blog.
YAY! I was one of the flurry of onsie-wishers. You have been officially Christmas-listed!
(That is, you are on every Christmas list in the family, not that we’ve planned to purchase you a gift.)
((Not that we wouldn’t want to give you a gift, it’s just, well, finances and such, and you don’t really seem the materialistic type.))
(((This part was added merely for the fun of it. )))
Aww, Oot looks adorable. Almost makes me want to procreate so I can put my baby in a NotW onesie.
Epic design. +3 Cool Points. I would seriously consider wearing this myself just to have a conversation piece to bring up The Kingkiller Chronicles to people, it would be worth any potential embarrassment :) Does it come in extra-extra-extra-extra-extra large? lol
@Evenglare: I envy you! I play the lute as well (mandolin) having picked it up to learn after reading TNOTW (yes Pat, you inspired me through Kvothe)! I love my lute and play it daily. I so dearly want it signed by Mr. Rothfuss one day.
Hey Pat,
My wife snapped a sneak attack photo of you and George R. R. Martin in front of the exhibit hall at World Con. Two furry gents talking in the hallway.

Pat,
I have to say that the Mud and Blood panel was awesomely chock full of cool beans and mack daddiness.
I was already a fan of you and Glen Cook, but I left there a fan of Ken Scholes as well. I am ordering some of his work as we speak and I will read them as soon as I get them. Also thank you for taking the time to answer my questions after the panel, very nice of you.
I got into Robin Hobb’s Koffeklastch which was supremely cool. Plus I really wanted to talk to her since I believe she is one of the few authors who is slightly better at first person narrative than you are. But only slightly.
Hey Pat !
Have you seen Portal: No Escape (Live Action Short Film by Dan Trachtenberg) ?
If so, what did you think of it ?
OOH! I literally JUST watched that! It was very interesting, and I’d really like to see a full-length movie of that sort.
Anyway, I know I’m not Pat, but I wanted to throw out my opinion about it.
Oot looks and sounds very cute. Sigh, my baby days are long gone, but there was a definite twinge of missing those wonderful years when they are so little and cute and squidgey. Now that mine are 14 and 8 and full of hormones and cheekiness, I get nostalgic.
And by the way….had you come across this reference to the Name of the Wind…
http://jimhines.livejournal.com/591660.html
Personally I think you should get in touch with your Spanish publishers and see if they can put that video on the back of the trailer for Wise Man’s Fear, I think they’d go nicely together.
Kudos to you for conceiving of spending money on both hookers AND Pez.
I think any other person would merely talk about spend their money on either hookers OR Pez.
Dear Pat,
Do you ever come near southwestern Michigan? I suppose I could make the drive north, but I need a better excuse for my wife than book signing. Maybe there’s some great shopping in Petosky or UP area…?
So, I tried to convince my husband we needed another kid so I’d have an excuse to buy the onesie. He said, “Ask about toddler sized shirts instead.” No fun at all, I tell ya.
He’s growing so fast. I used to look after my nephew at that age, and tomorrow he’s heading to college. It goes by far quicker than you think, so soak it up all you can.
I clicked on Oot’s picture to encutenate, which it certainly did, and realized how much Oot looks like you. He only needs to grow that Rothfuss beard now. Great picture.
Pat,
If one year from now we have a modern day baby boom, I’m blaming your adorable onesies.
Seriously Brilliant. Also, Oot is wonderful. Please blog more pat, I miss your written word.
Aaauughh!! CUTE!!! Cuteness overload!!! XDDDDD Wow, Oot is getting so big! (and so adorable! Well, he always was adorable, but I love that he’s talking so much and has bangs now~ Encutenation!!!)
And Colorful Kvothe Onesie FTW!! I’ll see about purchasing one for my little cousin…
That was precious.
Skis = skies, maybe? Like, if you point up while outdoors, does he identify it as “sky”, or…?
Do they come in adult sizes?
