Upcoming Events in Reno and the UP

I hate posting updates while I’m away from my home computer.

I’m up in the north woods right now, a lovely place, isolated. Great for a little family vacation. It’s the sort of place where you can only get cell phone reception if all the local bears are standing in the right places so the radio waves reflect the signal in the right way.

But it’s hell on internet, too. Not only do I have to leave behind my lovely clicky keyboard behind, but I have to use a borrowed computer. Last night I typed up a post three separate times, only to have my dad’s computer erase it, rather than saving it.

This I do not love.

Anyway, I’m at the local library right now, and I’m posting to let y’all know about some reading and signings that are coming up in the next couple weeks.

*     *     *

Note: This first event is in less than a week. Tell your friends….

Next week I’ll be in Reno for Worldcon. (My schedule for the convention is posted on the events page and on facebook.)

But since I’m going to be in the area for the first time, I thought I’d do a signing for people who live nearby but are unable to attend Worldcon.

So Sundance Books & Music is hosting the event which will be held next door at the Nevada Museum of Art. I’ll be doing my standard reading, Q&A and signing. The store will be selling my books and you can contact them at 775-786-1188 or on their website or facebook. I’ve put up a facebook event as well if you’re interested.

[Edit: Because the theater we’re having the reading in only has about 200 seats, the bookstore is suggesting that you call ahead and reserve your place. That way you can be sure to have a seat waiting for you when show up.]

The last weekend of August, I’ll be doing an “Author vs. Author” event at McLean & Eakin Booksellers with Ernie Cline, whose first book, Ready Player One, is coming out on the 16th.

It’s Awesome. How Awesome?

This Awesome:

The bookstore is requesting reservations for this (free) event and you can contact them at 231-347-1180.

And there’s an Awesome poster.

Since I was going to be driving through the UP on my way back from Petosky, I thought I should take the time do do a signing. Luckily, the lovely people at Snowbound Books were willing to accommodate me.

I’ll be doing my typical reading/Q&A/and signing. Hardcovers of NOTW and WMF with be available at the store, as well as copies of The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle. I’ll also have copies of the promotional sticker with me.

For more info, or to reserve a copy of the book, call: 906-228-4448.

That’s all for now, folks. Sorry the post isn’t prettier and wittier, but the library is about to close.

New post on Monday.

For your Worldcon reading: is it material from the unreleased book 3, or book 2?

pfffft… are you kidding? You know how Pat feels about spoilers, right? Also, I don’t think Book 3 is going to see the light of day for at least another 97 years. He said so in one of his signings. It might be released in 99 years. :)

Actually. I have a few stories I’m working on now, I might read from one of those… That way you get to hear something new, and we still get to be spoiler-free….

My favorite part of this post?

For Pat, Marquette is on the way to somewhere. Really?

It’s gonna be a gorgeous drive though, I’m jealous.

Borrowed computers are never easy. I have to say that my netbook has become a dear and cherished friend. So much so that it feels odd to be using my main computer. ;)

As for Ernest Cline… I had an opportunity to read “Ready Player One” and I have to agree with your erudite review! I had a complete and total relapse of my Pac Man Fever from back in the day. #sigh

If I may be so bold, I would be remiss in not recommending the Vierling restaurant in Marquette for dinner, unless you have another predisposition. I’m from Marquette, and that’s where I eat when I’m in town. It’s within walking distance from Snowbound. At the Vierling they brew their own beer, and the fish is extremely fresh. It comes from the fishery right down the street.

Nature will always beat computers for me, however Satellite laptops with wireless internet aren’t a bad way to go, if you need the clickty click of a keyboard to fall asleep. Australia has some awesome natural wonders but the old growth forests in the states I have seen on ABC are insane I would love to spent a month hiking and fishing over there, your lucky mate.

“#1 New York Times best selling author” gotta love that. The others can only give advice as “best selling authors” not quite as credible at our Master Roth.

I was going to comment “#1 New York Times bestselling author” but I’ll just +1 your post. You are #1 Pat, that’s pretty awesome.

Hey Pat, do you ever do signings in Wisconsin? Being one of the few, the cheesy, the Wisconsinites your book signings seem to be a bit far away to drive to. (Especially a poor college kid like me) Should I continue waiting for a chance at a Wisconsin book signing in the near future? Or do I take my chances and try and send you something “cool” in the mail along with my copy of The Wise Man’s Fear, in the hopes you’ll take pity on me and sign my book?

    • Posted August 16, 2011 at 3:09 AM | Permalink

I do them all the time. Just keep your eye on the blog and facebook for the announcements.

Any time I would have a long post or email typed up that would fanger me to lose I make sure I copy-paste it into Notepad once it’s done, but before I hit Submit. So much easier to copy it back again than re-create it from scratch.

Although, it makes it worse when I forget to copy it first and it picks that time to crash/freeze – then I’m mad at the machine and myself.

Well, Patrick “The Father of Oot” Rothfuss, I really wish I could go to either of these events. Reno is an 8 hour drive and Minnesota is even farther…

Someday I will meet you good sir.

Will be getting that book on Tuesday.

On another subject, we tried to get our 2 year old to say “Rothfuss”. It came out “Waffles”. This is probably a big compliment as he really likes waffles.

Just wanted to give you feedback about the translation into German, don’t know if you’re interested, but I’ll tell you anyway^^
The translation of NOTW was awesome, I really enjoyed reading it ( I re-read it in english ), and so I was waiting for the translation of Day2, and just found out that they split it into 2 seperate books, each for 25€… I mean a absolutely adore your books and I HAVE to have them…. but 50€ for a story I already read ( of course I read it in english the first day it was published here )… Maybe you didn’t know what the publishers are doing, I think it ( excuse me ) sucks…

Still not close to Iowa or Nebraska. If you are ever near enough i am going to meet you. It will be epic and I will try to refrain from pulling your beard. Anyway….I am trying to let all my friends read your book. I am treating it like a drug. The first hit is free but you have to buy the second. So far I only have one other person addicted.

    Hi Patrick,
this is totally unrelated to this post, and may have been asked and answered before, but ah well. I’m currently doing a soil science subject at uni, and we’re discussing transportation methods of soils parent material. One method is called Eolian, and when I read that I had a little smile about :) Then I read a little further, and discovered Eolian parent material is wind transported and wind deposited. Now, is this a major coincidence- or is my favourite fictional haunt named after wind deposited dirt?!!
Either way, thank you for making my dreary textbook reading a little more exciting!

    • Posted August 16, 2011 at 3:11 AM | Permalink

Heh. If you look up Eolian, you’ll see where the word comes from….

    Well Pat,
I considered flying to Reno for your signing, but since it is two days away and I have to work and save the world, etc., I guess you will just have to wait until you get closer to Montana to meet me. I hope you aren’t too disappointed.

I just ordered Ready Player One based purely on your blurb on the back, Pat. Got any other video game related books to suggest? I’ve got Extra Lives by Tom Bissell already (which was fantastic).

Just an FYI: I dutifully called Snowbound Books (in typical Fanboy fashion), and apparently the signing is not at the Bookstore itself, but up the road at the Marquette Commons (112 SOUTH Third Street). Pat can you corroborate?

I posted on your Facebook event page too…hopefully you see one of ’em.

That’s actually a good thing. I was wondering how they were going to fit everybody in Snowbound. It has a lot of books, but not much space to walk around them. Despite the fact that one is on North Third Street and the other is on South Third Street, those two addresses are practically across the street from each other. (There’s only one building between them.) I don’t do Facebook, so I’m sorry if I’m offering a redundant description here.

And rest assured, you’re still within walking distance of the Vierling Restaurant.

I saw at some site that you recommended this book (they used your recommendation as some kind of promotion) and then bought it. I can’t thank you enough for the recommendation. Such an amazing concept. Of course it’s already set to be a movie.
