Upcoming events

Things continue to be busy over here in Rothfusia, what with wrapping up the fundraiser, training the new assistants, and all the maniacal laughter, there just don’t seem to be enough hours in the day.

Oh yeah, and the writing. That thing I need to do to make money and live. That takes a little bit of time, too.

This is just a quick blog to let you know of a few things happening in these next couple weeks that you might want to tune in for….

This upcoming Sunday (April 1st.) Felicia Day is going to be doing twelve straight hours of live video hangout over on Google+ as a way to spread the word about the upcoming launch of Geek and Sundry.

I’m going to be helping out with one of those hours by getting together with authors John Scalzi, Amber Benson, and Felicia herself to discuss what makes for good characters. I expect the conversation to wander pretty far afield. My plan is to drink about twelve shots of espresso before we go live, and then just see what happens.

That will be happening from 2:00-3:00 PM California time. (4:00-5:00 here in Wisconsin.)

If you’d like to see the full schedule for Felicia’s 12 hour carnival of delights, you can find that over here.

If you want to watch the hangout, you can either catch it live on Google+ or you can catch it on the Geek & Sundry Youtube channel.

It should be a good time. You should come check it out.

In other news, I’ll be hitting the Fox Valley Book Festival on April 12th (more detailed information is up there in the Tour Schedule tab.) I’ll be reading, answering questions, and signing books. Y’know, the usual.

So if you live in that neck of the woods, you should stop by, because I don’t know when I’ll be passing through again.

Lastly, we’ll be fielding questions from the audience on Sunday’s live hangout, so if you have something you’re curious about, you can post the question below in the comments. I’ll do my best to bring your questions, comments, and smart-ass remarks into the discussion if we’ve got the time….

See you soon,

pat

Have you ever considered expounding uppn Daeonica? I think this would make an excellent novella (or full length novel). And, it would be absolutely amazing to see it performed on stage.

Another question…will we ever see the results of the photo contest? I know you’ve been very busy with other more important things, but I’m sure I am not the only one wondering about this.

    I have a question:
Did your characters and world develop while writing or did you plan them before? Do you have some kind characteristics of a vita for everyone? Or did you just start to write and everything just evolved?

You have one hour chatting with Felicia Day, so screw character development, there are a billion more important questions. Most important, would you please ask her to do the transformation into a little pixie live on camera. I’m pretty sure that was no special effect during the Legend of Neil show. And I would like to see you freak out when she wiggles into your beard. Please combine it with the maniacal laughter you mentioned.

I bet there is a lot of interesting stuff to ask about char and world building, but I got a picture in my mind now of pixie-FD hiding in your beard with pixie dust shaking out of it due to your maniacal laughter and so I can’t wrap my mind about anything else right now.

    cheers

I’m not happy with the name of your republic. I feel ‘Rothfusia’ casually omits a number of likely strengths of your domain in addition to just changing the last few letters of your own name, which is clearly just a check swing.

    I want a home run.

We need a new name for your environs and subjects. Something suitably intimidating to the casual traveller, but not so much so that the dedicated seeker of glee wouldn’t off and give it a go anyway. A word that speaks to the oft-lurking darkness without just threatening people with it directly. And it has to include the laugh, of course. Maybe something about the beard.

    I have it!

We will call your demense… Chicago!

Gah. I suck at naming things. Ironic, given the forum.

Actually, the word is ‘demesne’. I wouldn’t point it out, except that I love how how confusing the spelling of demesne is.

How in the nine hells do you still find the time to actually write? You’re busier than my three best friends, each of their three best friends, President Obama, and me. Though to be perfectly fair, I’m really not all that busy at the moment.

I’ve got only one big question, and it’s not related to the event:

When will the third book come out? Roughly, of course.

BTW, you realize your FAQ has a question regarding when will the _second_ book come out? ;)

I’ve been watching the news for this new channel and I cannot wait. I have no life, so I’ll probably leave it on all day. Maybe I’ll even run it off the computer hooked to the TV. What better use is there for my 42″ flat screen than to bask in the glory of all the awesome things going to be happening that day on YouTube?

So, I guess I can ask a question. Um…I know someone already offered to make Jayne hats for the next fundraiser, but I was wondering if there is anything else you’d like crafted and donated? I’d be willing to throw in. I’ve been making and selling dice bags made with my own pattern, so there would be no issues with trademark violations or anything and I’d be happy to contribute some. Let me know if you’re interested.

Have you chosen a *definitive* name for Book 3 ?
If so, for how long has it been decided ?
If not, is it because you have too many possible names for it, or because you have none at all ?

    Thanks !

I’d like to put “Rothfussvania” out there.

I know that I have no vote and it’s likely that you’re completely uninterested in my opinion and it really has no bearing in my life. And yet still, I did want to suggest it.

Which of Kvothe’s characteristics make him so attractive and interesting, and how can one put similarly defining attributes in a character to make it likable and interesting?

What is a rigorous method for creating a world? I find, as an aspiring writer, that I just don’t know where to start. Are there any books out there you know of that help with the fundamentals, such how geography forms, civilizations function, or how to affect evolutionary patterns in interesting ways with society-warping magic systems?

Post scriptum: The Wise Man’s Fear is my all-time favorite book, with The Way of Kings nipping at its heels in a close second. I’ve read it thirty-seven times cover to cover. Feel free to take your time with The Doors of Stone.

Post post scriptum: Question: You always refer to your girlfriend as your girlfriend. Are you two married? I don’t mean to pry; I’m simply curious.

Thanks for the WMF lightning-oak tree signed poster I just got. AWESOMENESS!

I always wondered if there was a reason for them not getting married. (Yah, I know totally none of my business, but what can I say? Curiosity killed the cat, I’m interested to know. ) I have some couple friends who havent gotten married because of gay rights and such which is pretty interesting in my opinion. My old man and I have been together for 7 years and people ALWAYS ask when we are getting married (ANNOYING!) But we just havent because we’re not religious and hate wasting money LOL… (If I wanna have a fancy party, I’ll just freakin have one) Also, I just cant help but think it seems meaningless what with divorce rates and that there is more meaning in us promising eachother something and just sticking to it without a bunch of strings attached.

Hey, Mr. Rothfuss. Just wanted to let you know, in case you’re a little discouraged, that there are those of us who read your blog just to hear what you have to say.
Some of us (myself and my friends included) read every blog because you’re an interesting person with funny and insightful things to say. Not to correct your grammar, or tell you your links are outdated, or wheedle you about book three.
Some of us realize you’re a busy man and have no wish to bother you other than to tell you you’re cool.
Thanks for being a super awesome dude. Sorry you get so many silly comments.

Alright, let the angry responses commence.

just wanted to comment that the google+ hangout was a great idea. fun and informative — pat — when amber replied saying she liked characters who weren’t earnest — I could see you about to point out that one can be earnest and evil/bad — it’s not a positive/negative quality, its an oomph quality, as you pointed out, akin to verisimilitude. though john pointed out that it isn’t new to have reader/author connections, we can know you all so much better — it’s quite cool.

thanks for doing these things (and the blog)
