Comic-Con Schedule

This is my fourth year attending San Diego Comic-Con. And every year, something happens immediately before my trip, as if some cruel deific being were trying to prevent me from getting my geek on.

The complication this year? Rabies.

But that, as they say, is a story for another time. Suffice to say that I refuse to be thwarted, and am currently at ComicCon, preparing to lave myself geek culture.

Whenever I go to ComicCon, I prepare a list of things I’d like to do in my head.

Some of these are simple things. Friends I’d like to get together with and chat. Booths I’d like to visit. Presents I’d like to buy for people.

Other things on my list are more…. esoteric. It’s almost like the entire con is a game. Or a safari. And I get points if I see certain things on my trip. Like, say, a 300 pound guy with a beard dressed up as sailor moon. If I put that on my list, then see it at the con, I’d get, like, 35 points. More ordinary things, like spotting Stan Lee would only get me 5 points. (15 if he’s not doing a signing, or some other event.)

Then there’s things I hope to do at the con. The top of the list is, of course, Meet-Joss-Whedon-Then-Become-Best-Friends-and-Totally-Hang-Out-In-A-Tree-Fort-Together. That’s worth so many points that I would actually level up on the spot, perhaps with embarrassing consequences.

So far I’m doing pretty well at 78 points, with the big score being the fact that I got to hear John Scalzi sing “Somebody that I used to know” in the style of Fred Schneider from the B 52s while accompanying himself on the ukulele.

And listen. I know that sounds like some bullshit thing that I made up, but it really isn’t. I swear. It really happened. It’s printed indelibly on my on my heart and mind. Fire could not burn it from me.

Anyway, if you happen to be one of the 120,000 + people here at the con this weekend, here’s some of the stuff I’ll be doing, if you’re hoping to catch me here.

Thursday, July 12, 7:00-11:00pm
W00tstock

I’m just doing a little walk-on with the aforementioned John Scalzi. But if last year was any indication, it’s going to be a hell of a show.

There *might* be tickets available here.

(I’m not on this panel, but I’m going to be there. For reasons that must remain secret for now….)

[Edit: One more event!
Saturday, July 14, 2012 5:30-6:30pm
Spotlight on John Scalzi
Room 7 AB

I’ll be moderating this one.]

Other than that, I’m just going to be skulking around the con, looking for trouble. If you can’t get into my panel, then you have a decent chance of running into me in places like the Badali Jewlery booth (#530) or Geek Chic (131-133). I also tend to lurk around the Mysterious Galaxy booth a lot, I can’t remember the exact number of it, it’s somewhere in the 1000’s, but they have signed copies of my books there, and if you happen to catch me while I’m passing through, I’d be happy to personalize one to you.

And, of course, if you see me walking around the con, feel free to say hello.

Okay, I’m off. Wish me luck….

pat

I have to be honest here: I have never heard of Sand Diego. Is he some Mexican guy who hangs out on the beach a lot?

Sounds like shooing the bat out with a bedsheet was not the end of that story.

I believe rabies shots are recommended after bat encounters.

Poor and in Ohio. Pout. Someday, SDCC, someday.

On another topic, In the Ernest Cline Ready Player One three gates-coolest geek contest ever, I’m awaiting for the third gate to open on August 1st. I live in an apartment and don’t really have anywhere to put a Delorean if I win, (which is doubtful, as 500-1,000 people will be vying for it,) my wife asked what we would do with a Delorean.

I guess I hadn’t really thought it through. Just, you know, cool geeky videogame contest, how could I not want to be a part of that?

Then I though, I could give it to Worldbuilders.

so on the 1 in 1,000 chance I win, is that something you would want? I ask because giving away a car might be harder for you then mailing out books, and their might be different tax things and what not that you have to do with a car.

So bummed they sold out of tickets before I could get mine! UGH.
I’ve never been to ComicCon before, pretty much just want to go because I’d love to meet you and I heard Sanderson might be playing MTG at his hotel…even though I havent really liked Mistborn (the only series of his I read) I’d totally love losing to him at Magic…

Oh and I heard R.A. would be there too…god…FML right now.

Anyway – one question. Is going to this Con really intimidating? Like if I went to it, maybe next year, would I be too overwhelmed to enjoy it? Or just freak out because I dont know where I’d find any of the authors or video game shit I actually would be interested in seeing. I wouldnt like it if I got stuck with seeing a bunch of randoms. ( I got goals ya know)

Also (yah I lied when I said one question…) are there other cons in Cali authors go too? Or are popular? I’m pretty new to this circuit of geekdom…ya know…I usually try to keep that shit on the down low. :P

I need help with the acronyms. . .
      MTG?
      R.A.?
      FML?

Magic the Gathereing (Collectible Card Game)
R.A. Salvatore (Author of some old school Dungeon and Dragons Novels)
Fuck my luck (Basicly means I am unlucky and it sucks)

MTG is an acronym for a popular fantasy collectable card game named “Magic: the Gathering” that’s been around since 1993ish.

R.A. is a reference to fantasy author R.A. Salvatore, who you may know from his series of books set in the D&D Forgotten Realms universe.

FML is shorthand for a statement of frustration: (expletive deleted) my life.

Sometimes being a nerd is like joining the military. Acronyms everywhere. :)

And D&D stands for Dungeons and Dragons…damn acronyms.

Sorry, didnt mean to confuse anyone! But as a side bar…wasnt that interesting to learn?

Pat! If you would like to swing by the Hyatt hotel bar-area after w00tstock, I’d love to buy you a drink or something! You know, if you want. You’re pretty much the ony person I’d really like to chat with at this con… and I was carrying around the QP (trade paperback for all those who’ve never worked with books) of The Name of the Wind for a few hours today, hoping to run into you! So yes, the offer is there if you wanna put up with a (mild) fan girl for a bit. And hey, if not, no big deal! The first day is always super tiring. Have a good time either way! Hope to see you soon,

That sounds like so much fun. I hope you get to have a blast Pat!
Rabies eh? This isn’t an Old Yeller situation is it?

Oh, and if you run into Wil Wheaton, tell him he’s a great audiobook narrator.

Also! If you decide to come by, just search for a longer haired gentleman in a white and blue striped seersucker suit… He’s more noticeable than I. :P I’m in a navy blue halter dress and am still carrying your book. :) If you can’t tonight, we will be there most every evening after the con!

Hey, Patrick, so I´m thinking about starting my own story, I really like the fantasy genre and would like to build a big world map, so I know maybe it depends on the person, but I have to ask such a creative guy like you, did you start building your world first or did you think about the story first.
Thank you , and I love your books.

Once in my life, I really, really, really want to go to ComicCon. Being a college student and from Europe, I can’t afford the plane tickets OR the hotel. But I’ll make it someday.

I’m starting to save for next year already. I agree it is really expensive for the regular joe. But I understand why, its a huge event and its packed full of cool shit.

My friend and I have been selling crafts and putting the profits away, it has been going good actually. So I totally recommend it. We started by selling hemp jewelry on craigslist and at the local farmers market and get at least 100% profit. From one poor person to the next – you should give it a try, its actually really easy.

Awwww….maaaaaaaaaaan…….The Crownless Again Shall Be King event, all those amazing authors in one room! Any chance something like that could happen in Malaysia?

John Scalzi on the ukelele singing ‘Somebody that I used to know’ Fred Schneider style? That sounds so out of this world, it has to be true. Even you couldn’t make something like that up. haha!

Man, I’m so jealous. Anyone going there — have fun!

Last year I sent a lovely young lady dressed as the Khaleesi to Badali’s Jewelry to pick up my talent pipes. She later admitted she met Pat there but didn’t know him at the time, much to her shame.

This year I have no such minions available at my disposal, alas.

Never been to Comic-Con but when I do my score sheet will have “Give Patrick Rothfuss a jumping high five.”

That should be worth at least 50 points I believe.

Hi! I saw you the other day at Comic Con, as I sat on a bench outside of The Old Spaghetti Factory. I wish I could have thought of something else to say to you, besides what I ended up yelling. Which, by the way, is the best way to embarrass your teenage daughter. Anyway, what I would have said is that I think your writing is beautiful and your mind is brilliant. I picked your book for my book club pick last year. I cannot wait to read more of your work, but for now… “You’re awesome!”

Ah why must I live in Belgium! Visiting ComicCon would be exactly what my inner fantasy geek would love love love. So many amazing actors and authors I love. So many other geeks who are just as crazy about imaginary things as I am.
The closest thing we have to fulfilling my fantasy needs is the Elf Fantasy Fair in Holland. No chance you’ll be there no :p?

But, my Irish man is dragging me to the States next year to visit some of his family, first time out of Europe for me and if the timing is right I’d love to go to ComicCon. If we do, hope I’ll see you there!
