Upcoming Appearances – 2013

Okay folks, convention season approaches, and I’ve got a lot of stuff coming up this year.

So I’m going to list my current schedule here for those of you who might be unaware of the fact that I actually post my Tour Schedule up online. Or for the people that are unaware that I post my upcoming events on my facebook fan page.

Or for those of you who are… y’know… just kind of lazy.

A lot of the events I’m going to are conventions where you can see me on panels, get your books signed, and maybe see me do to a reading.

Generally speaking when I go somewhere, especially somewhere new, I try my hardest to schedule an out-of-con signing so that folks who don’t want to go to the con (or who can’t afford it) can still catch me when I’m in town.

But this weekend, March 9-10, I’ll be in Tucson for the Tucson Festival of Books. And this time I *won’t* be doing a signing outside the event because the festival is 100% free and open to the public. So if you’ve ever wanted to hear me talk about writing or get your book signed, this is a great opportunity to do so.

If you’re interested, here’s my full schedule (which is also available on the Facebook event).

Saturday March 9

  • 11 AM – Signing for Mostly Books – Booths 127-130
  • 12:30 PM – Signing for Mysterious Galaxy – Booth #301
  • 2:30 PM – Panel: Beauty with a Bow and Arrow – UA Mall tent
  • 4: 00 PM – Signing at University of Arizona Bookstore’s tent

Sunday May 10

  • 11:30am – Panel: Worldbuilding –  Koffler 218
  • 2:00 PM – Signing at Poisoned Pen – Booth #230-231
  • 4:00 PM – Panel: Epic Fiction – Koffler 204

Note: There will be half-hour signings after all of my panels, too.

Pat giving hug

(Yes. I still give hugs.)

I’m regularly sent messages that say “WHEN ARE YOU COMING TO MY CITY!” when I was there just two weeks earlier. So I’d like to remind all of you now: I have a Tour Page here on the website, and I also have Facebook Events for pretty much everything I do.

Did I mention that already? Yes. Yes I did. But it bears repeating because people constantly ask me what my tour schedule is.

But y’know, because I’m from the Midwest, I was raised to be extra accommodating, so I’ll list my upcoming events here anyway, for those of you who happen to be click-phobic or something.

And that’s everything we have firmly scheduled right now. As I’ve said, I’ll probably be scheduling non-convention events in Indianapolis, Columbus, and Kansas City. And more in England, too. Since I don’t get over the water very often. Those will be showing up… you guessed it. On my tour schedule.

Last, I have a request.

Can we *please* not have a hundred comments down below saying things like, “but when ru comign to Scranton?!?!!!”

Here’s what you should consider before you post a comment like this:

1. Generally speaking, I do these events out of the goodness of my heart.

I like to meet my readers, sign books, and talk about writing. I like hanging out with geeks and being part of the community.

2. I try to go new places every year so I can be available to people in different parts of the country. (And the World).

That’s why I’m hitting Arizona, Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma this year. They’re all states I haven’t been to yet.

3. These events take a lot of time and energy.

The events I’ve listed up above are an expenditure of eight weekends of my life. Long weekends, most of them. Probably close to 35 days.

4. My time and energy are not infinite resources.

When I post something like this, what I’m doing is saying, “Hey guys. I’m willing to offer up 10% of my year making myself available to you. Let’s get together and have fun.”

Can you see how it might be disheartening for me to post that up and have the response be dozens of comments effectively saying, “I’m upset! I’m unhappy! I want more! I want more!”

Similarly disheartening comments include things like: “I have to work Friday night, can you do a second event on Saturday afternoon?” or “Columbus is 50 miles away! Can you come to Sulfur Lick instead?”

I know it comes from a place of love. I really know that.

And I know sometimes enthusiasm leads us to do silly things. I vaguely remember my mom telling me a story about how she once wrote a letter to the Beatles, sending them some song lyrics and asking them to record the song and send a copy back to her.

And I’m *very* aware that this is some serious first-world-problem shit I’m talking about here. I’m very lucky to have a readership as enthusiastic as y’all.

But I’m just being honest here. Comments like this make me weary. They make me think dark thoughts like, “Why do I fucking bother going to these lengths when all people do is bitch and moan and ask for more?”

Should you feel bad if you’ve made a comment like this in the past? No. Not at all. That’s not what this is about. There’s no reason you could know comments like that started rubbing me raw years ago.

That’s why I’m mentioning it here. So you know. Time and again, my readers have proven themselves to be gracious, lovely people. Especially the ones who take the time to read the blog. So I’m guessing if I let you know this bugs me, you won’t do it any more.

Oh sure, I’ll still have to deal with it on facebook and twitter (whenever I finally decide to join) but hopefully I won’t have to deal with it here in my own blog.

Okay, ramble over. I’ll see some of you soon in Tuscon, assuming my gimping, crutchy self makes it there despite the incoming storm.

Be good to each other,

pat

I think it’s awesome you take the time out of your schedule to keep in touch with the fan-base. We all know how excited you get running in to geeks you fan-squish over, so we know you ‘get’ our love. And that is completely rad. Makes you a human. Thank you for that.

Although the closest city on your list is 5 hours away from me, something like this is totally worth the drive. I met GRRM back in 2005 at a signing, I’ll hopefully be having coffee with Robin Hobb when she’s in town this summer for a con… so driving to see you at one of these events means a big ole’ check mark off the list-of-shit-I-want-to-do. Since you three are my favorite authors and all. :D *fan hug*

Hopefully you don’t get any cheeky comments that you should keep writing instead of traveling.

This is pretty much the coolest news I’ve heard in a really long time! Now to scour my wardrobe to find the perfect outfit appropriate for the event. I don’t care that it’s two months away! This is something I’ve been waiting for for at least four years!

    I’ll be keeping an eye out if you do add some non-con stops over here in the UK. Going to the WFC in Brighton would be great, but a few clicks told me it’s firmly out of my limited budget ^^;

Hopefully you’ll be able to find time for some extra stops. If you’re looking for anywhere down south, may I recommend (in what is not at all blatant self interest) Bournemouth? It’s a wonderful town by the sea, and has some degree of literary history to it to boot! Mary Shelley is buried here, JRR Tolkien lived here for some time, and Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde here!

If not here, then I’m sure I shall journey to wheresoever I may meet you in a financially prudent manner though!

Patrick, one thing about you that I think many of us appreciate, is how down to earth and real you seem to be. So if you feel we, your fans, are stepping on your toes, I think we can handle you asking us to step off. I am sure you work hard to balance your time for family, work, and play. We appreciate the time you give us. We also appreciate how you allow us into your world with the blog, and the things you post on Facebook. If you ever do make it to my corner of the world, I will be there to shake your hand and thank you for all you give to us.

Thanks for doing the events updates for us lazy folks, and the events themselves. A couple of years back, you blogged about a signing in Iowa City. I don’t live anywhere close, but had some friends there at the time. They didn’t know of you, but listened to me when I suggested they attend. They had a blast, became fans, and surprised me by sending me a signed copy of NotW!

So, just to be clear, you’re NOT coming to Scranton? God’s BODY!!

  31. Posted March 8, 2013 at 9:42 AM | Permalink

I know asking this makes the concepts of wishful thinking and longshot into a laughable amalgamation of sorts, a “are you kidding me?” point, but any chance you might ever come to India? anywhere in the subcontinent(Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh) is fine, I ‘ll swim disputed waters, trespass across international borders, beg steal borrow around potential visa violations, but I’ll make it.

People really need to discover your work here, to date I have only ever met one person who knows of your work, who i haven’t had to previously strong arm, into reading the name of the wind and wise man’s fear(i have done this to many friends of mine, all of them, to this day, keep thanking their stars, destiny and the world in general, instead of me, that they found NOTW).

This is purely because people don’t know you here, and maybe because they are intimidated by the size of the books. They do not know of the awesomeness they are willfully missing.

Pardon the overkill,( i have of course exaggerated a few facts, invented others) but have i made a convincing case?

Pat, perhaps you should be a bit less Midwest-reticent and put the “please don’t beg me to come to Scranton/Salt Lick” at the top of the post. So that folks from all over the Four Corners doesn’t miss that part and do exactly what rubs you raw. :)

Speaking of which… every time I read “four corners”, it makes me think of New Mexico/Arizona/Colorado/Utah.

Amen to the ‘sort of painful’ and ‘let go of the Midwest a bit more maybe’ parts…

…good luck on the balancing act. The one where you want to stay your friendly outgoing self but have to draw lines not to get avalanched.

On a sideways (taking-time-out-of-life-to-interact-with-fans) related note:
Thanks for taking the time to write blogs. They make me smile. A lot. Cry, once (say, 3 weeks ago). They make me think about love. About the way life should be. About writing craft. About society. They make me want to reach out to people more, in the small ways I’m capable of. They have probably doubled the length of my to-read-list. They are a gift that makes me happy everytime I happen across one. So, again, thank you for them.

Sadly, current transportation costs are prohibitive. But I’m sure you’ll be working the kinks out of that problem any day now?

I say: “Columbus is 33 miles away! Can you come to White Sulphur instead?” (http://goo.gl/maps/4jQML). The name and distance similarity seemed really unlikely, but I am sure it was 100% coincidence.

No, I don’t actually live there, but I know of it. There is a family owned golf course 1 mile away where Ben Curtis grew up. His family still owns and runs it. He won the British Open and was drinking beer out of the Claret Jug in tiny Ostrander, OH-IO.

I was looking for Brazil on the tour schedule or in your blog [search tool], but then I found your comment about a visit to Australia… well, guess it may take a LOOOOONNNNNG while, but at least knowing you’re visiting other continents like that is something REALLY good!

Anyway, I LOVE your books, and I really have NOTHING to criticize about them… but while looking for “Brazil” mentions on your blog, I found that page of the brazillian cover (what a shame, we copied the french cover… D=).
The thing is, please, just don’t say that brazillian portuguese is a “dialect” anymore, ok? REALLY. It makes us mad. We do NOT speak spanish, and our language is NOT a dialect. It’s like saying “US English” is a dialect of the “UK English”… or WORSE, as “Brazillian” and “Portuguese” portuguese are very different between one another, not just in pronounce or some words more used in one or another variant of the language (as english), but even in grammar!
Brazil’s portuguese is very different from Portugal’s.

Anyway, not mad at you, I would be if it was someone else saying, but you… well, you’re the writer of The Kingkiller Chronicle! I just can’t be mad at you! xD

Now I’m really thinking about why the f*** I’ve written this comment… ‘-‘

Love your books! Waiting eagerly for what will come next…

So this is a bit off topic, but did I miss the WorldBuilders wrap up? Should we be looking forward to some kind of Rothfuss/Benson sex tape (and by that I mean cassette-based audio book, pervs)? Do we know who won the Gaiman? Did they give it back? If so, was it gladly or begrudgingly? Inquiring minds want to know…

    Safe Travels!
And have fun at the Con’s!

I noticed you didn’t have anything lined up for my birthday, so I’ll be expecting you.

    Just kidding.

And seriously – Safe Travels man. I’m a super nervous traveller and just the thought of flying over the big water makes me want to vomit a little. You were seriously less than 100 miles away last year and I didnt make it because I got too much anxiety. LOL. And I’ve yet to live it down with the boyfriend.

Nice! My daughter just asked me two days ago if we could go to the U of A event. Which is funny because I work at U of A as a network analyst and didn’t know we were having a book festival. I told her we’d go then decided to check out the event online. I hit the authors section with the faintest hope that maybe you’d be coming here. In all honesty I didn’t think I’d see your name on the list. When I did I couldn’t believe it. Looking forward to seeing you here. If you need to know the best places to eat or the best places for a great beer just let me know.

I think it’s great that you’re getting out there to places that you haven’t been to before. I’d love to see you again in Portland, OR, because my husband and I so very much enjoyed your reading when you were here for Book 2 Tour (my husband came out of it saying, “Wow. That made me really, really want to read this guy’s book,” despite the fact that the longest book he’d ever read by that point was 200 pages long!). But, we’d so much rather you be happy and with your son more, writing just the right amount so that it’s still something you love, than just physically here. Enjoy your travels!

Two years ago I was living in Tuscon finishing my BA and I remember being really disappointed that you’d be in SF for a WMF signing. SF being very close to where I’m from. Now I have my degree and moved back to CA and am cursing myself for missing you again. Now I’m just going to stay put until you come back this way.

No hurries though, I brought a book.

P.S. I recommend Bumsteads and Blue Willow Cafe for your dining needs, both are quite close to the University.

Ill have to see if I can scrape some pennies together I think. Thank you for deciding to cross the pond though Pat. Even if I dont make it, im sure you’ll have an awesome time over here…

My wish is that one of these days our paths will cross in the East Towne Mall Barnes & Noble as you continue your ongoing quest to sign every book in Madison, WI. I appreciate this post! And unfortunately, people are sometimes jerks. It’s childish to complain and ask where you’ll be next, I mean, there’s only so many places one man can be! This blog has been helping me now that I’ve read your books and am starved for more. We should be glad you blog, let alone tour!
Also, on the off chance you haven’t heard, your Twitter can automatically be updated by your Facebook. That’s the only reason I was convinced into making a Twitter account. But hey, I won’t judge if you don’t get on Twitter. Facebook is more than enough social media, I think.

First off, thanks for being courteous and letting your fans know what events you’ll be at so we can schedule hours (or days) off work to spend with you.

I recall meeting you previously, and you were extremely gracious, especially with my question as to whether or not writing certain scenes caused you to have the same visceral reaction as I did reading those same scenes. I previously got A Wise Man’s Fear signed in San Diego for my step-sister and gave it to her as a wedding present (it was her favorite wedding present, might I add), and since I live close to the Orange location and, therefore, the WonderCon location, I would dare say your visit will be the very reason for my to go to my very first Con at the age of 32. That is in addition to seeing you on March 28, of course.

Will you be there to hold my hand and show me the ropes cuz I’ll be a newbie? Or at least give me a few pointers while fending off the legions of fans looking for hugs?

    Hi Mr Rothfuss,
My name is Sarah, and I’m 13 and I live in Singapore. I happened to stumble upon your blog. Nice drawings! They’re awesome. I read your novel The Name of the Wind over the winter break, and oh my gosh, it was phenomenal. I loved it. Someone should turn it into a movie. I’m intending to read the next book, but I can’t find it ANYWHERE!
Your book was so awesome it made me want to write even more fantasy and fiction, and really get into the depth of it. I cried when Kvothe’s lute broke, I was just like, oh no! What’s he going to do! The lute meant everything to him! I wrote a novel of 3800 words in the last half of 2012 and started a new one after I read The Name of The Wind.
    My blog is:
    http://imaginegaier17955.blogspot.sg
I post most of my writing there, including snippets of my novel. It would be awesome if you could just drop by and read somehting and maybe post a comment if you’re not too busy writing or doing something else. That would be HIGHLIGHT of the YEAR! I really want to become an author when I’m older, so…
    Thank you, Sarah

By the way, the duct tape shirt was pretty awesome! I might arrange something like that for an end of the year thing on my homeroom teacher.

Just a pity it’s the wrong end of the country for me…anyway, while you’re there, make sure and spend a bit of time investigating the South Downs. You might just be inspired (then again…). It really is a stunning part of the country, even when the weather is crap, which seems to be the norm at the moment. Do it. You won’t regret it!
