Final Call for Torment….

As I write this, there are less than two days remaining to the Torment Kickstarter I mentioned a couple weeks back on the blog

I hope you’ll forgive me for bringing it up again, but I’m a little excited about the project. Plus the clock is ticking, and a few things have happened since my original post.

Actually, a LOT of things have happened, but I’ll just hit the high points here…

4fbZkXV

1. Support

First I want to thank everyone that stormed over to the Torment Kickstarter and signed up. The folks running the show tell me that the day I announced my involvement and posted up my blog was the second biggest day of the kickstarter so far.

I can’t thank you enough for that. It’s not often I get to look cool, but you guys made me look cool.

Also, your comments in that blog were delightfully supportive and encouraging. A few were kind enough to make me weepy.

So… yeah. Thanks for being lovely humans. And double thanks for proving that the internet is peopled with something *other* than wankers, whiners, and people that type “first.”

2. The Stretch Goal

The kickstarter has flown past 3.25 million, which means I’m officially going to be helping write a piece of the game.

Woo!

3. Character

After I was officially part of the team, I started to think about what I was going to write. And my thoughts kept coming back to what I really liked about some of those older games. Specifically, the companions your character travels with as you move through the story.

How cool would it be, I thought, to write the dialogue and story arc for one of these secondary characters?

So I called Colin and asked him how he’d feel about me writing a companion.

He asked me if I had any ideas for a character.

I told him I did. I explained the character.

He said it was weird. Not the sort of character that normally gets written into games.

But he also said I could do it.

So now I’m excited. I get to write a companion for the game.

I can’t tell you anything about her except that it will almost certainly be a she.

And she’s not going to be the usual sort of thing, because this isn’t going to be your usual sort of game.

4. Extras

They’ve added some new stuff to the Kickstarter since my last post. You can be a Beta or an Alpha tester now. (So if you’ve ever wanted to be a beta reader of mine, now’s your chance.)

I’ll also be doing a comic for the game, because comics are another form I’m looking to experiment with a little more, and it gives me a chance to work with Nate Taylor again. I’ll be using that story to introduce my character, and flesh out my little corner of the world. Plus writing comics is easier for me, as the artist has to do most of the heavy lifting.

If you’re interesting in adding stuff like being an alpha tester and/or getting some of the comics being written for the game by me and other folks, you can increase your bid over on Kickstarter.

5. The Final Days

As I mentioned before, the kickstarter is about a day and a half from being over. Right now we stand at about 3.6 million, making us the second-highest game ever funded on Kickstarter.

PN4ZKsp

If we can hit 3.99 before it ends, we’ll be *the* highest funded game ever. I’m thinking we can do it if we can just get the word out to enough people…

So if you’re interested in getting in early, now would be a great time to jump on board. Supporting the game now is much better than doing it later, because if you buy in now, that money goes toward making a better game. Plus it’s cheaper to buy now. Plus you get the chance of cool extras and add-ons that won’t be available after the kickstarter closes.

Yeah. There you go. That’s my final pimping of the Kickstarter.

Here’s the link,

And I’m done.

Man, oh man, oh man…This game looks superbly beautiful. And now I wish I hadn’t bought all those books last week because I don’t have any more money left over to take part in this Kickstarter…unless I want to eat instant ramen for the rest of the month (note: I live in Malaysia USD25 is worth a lot more here).

Whoa, wait. This game is making me regret buying BOOKS? Well, this is a first.

I know, I was mostly amped for the Comic since I have a ton of games I hardly play already, but now….I’m really curious and that alone is enough to make me play the game all the way through at least once! LOL.

    Hey Pat,

Never played the original but because of you and all the enthusiastic comments from people saying how great the story was in the original i just had to contribute. Here’s hoping that the game lives upto the hype!

Couple of questions if you don’t mind…

    1. How do we get our grubby mitts on the Comic if it wasnt on our pledge level?

    2. Probably not one for you so feel free to say “go ask on their forums dood!” Do you happen know if the running total on the KS page includes the Paypal donations on their website or if the total includes the percentage that KS will take from them?

PS. Happy to hear that the writing is going great, sometimes we need a distraction from our work so that we can get back on the horse fully charged ready to kick ass and take names.

      Hi Rahl,
I hope you don’t mind me answering your first question: Under http://tormentrpg.tumblr.com/theksaddons you can find all add-ons, how to add on you don’t have in your tier and how things will be handled.

Oh and the running meter on the KS shouldn’t include the PayPal amount as far as I know, you can check the blog for news on that amount as well.

      Greetings,
      Taurus

      1. The comic, at the moment, is an add-on only item. Basically, it doesn’t come with ANY of the tiers right now, so the only way to get it is to add on the $8 for the comic, or the $14 for the comic pack with all 3 bonus comics.
      2. The running total on the kickstarter page is the total amount of money donated through kickstarter, not the actual amount that they will get once amazon and kickstarter take their shares. However, their stretch goals DO take into account the paypal donations, which is why some stretch goals are being met seemingly before the kickstarter catches up to them.

I know you probably hear this a lot but I (a complete stranger) am truly happy for you. As much as I want the third book I am overjoyed that other people get to experience your character/world building that otherwise might not get to. You seem like a truly legit person and I couldn’t think of another celebrity(?) that deserves this more. You’re more than gracious to your sometimes aggravating fan base and I think I speak for us all when I say “Thanks Pat!”

As a side note: I was thinking just last night how stoked I’m going to be when I get to give my copy of Name of the Wind to my son. He’s only three but he’s already a nerd like his dad. He’ll love it.

I’m a big fan of the kind of game that Torment will be, though I never encountered Planescape: Torment during my gameplaying. I’ve also never contributed to a Kickstarter campaign. Until now.

While what has been displayed so far regarding the game is indeed quite beautiful, and I’m really looking forward to playing it once it’s done, the primary motivating factor in the decision to contribute has been you, Pat. Knowing that you’re contributing to the writing of the game fills me with such ridiculous levels of fan-glee.

Thank you for the hours upon hours of entertainment you’ve provided to me in your writing. And I’m looking forward to whatever comes next.

Oh snap. I wasn’t planning on going for the comics, though it looks like I’ll now have to add another $14 to my pledge; whilst I knew one of them would be yours, I wasn’t that bothered, but you’ve now roused my curiosity. Curiosity is a dangerous beast to stir…

Also, this is the first time, I think, that I’ve ever written “Oh snap.” I usually find it one of those annoying, non-swearing-but-swearing, Americanisms. This time, however, it seemed appropriate as it describes the sound of my resolve unexpectedly breaking.

I missed out (apparently sadly) on Planescape Torment when it was released, but just hearing you talk about it with your guests on the video games episode of Storyboard started getting me excited about Tides of Numenera. When you announced that you were going to write for the game if your stretch goal was reached, that sealed the deal for me. Now I’m hungrily devouring all the information the designers have released so far and setting myself up for a long anticipation until the game is released.

For anyone that hasn’t pledged yet or doesn’t know much about the game, there is a great page on inXile’s blog that contains some of the concept art, their vision document, and links to a series of videos featuring various members of the design team talking about some of the features and components of the game. That can be found here. I would personally love to see this game break the $4M mark on kickstarter, because not only would that be record-breaking, but it also unlocks some really cool rewards.

THEN, I got super excited when Pat, that bearded legend, displayed on the stretch goals! I crossed my fingers for him to make it into the game, and, here we are.

…but then, last night, I somehow justified the purchase of not only a copy of Wasteland 2, but also beta access and a place in the credits…

    Hi Pat
So due to a mixture of my age and the fact that I was overly protected as a child I never had the opportunity to play the original torment along with many other classics. I found a site called gog.com that sells classics games already properly set up with dos and everything and bought the original torment. Just within the first hour of gameplay I can see what you are talking about with the depth of writing that went into it.
Just read today’s blog and immediately went to kickstart to purchase my little future piece of paradise. And while I’m waiting for it to come out I have the original torment to occupy my time.
Thanks for introducing me to a great series and I look forward to see this unique character you’re working on.

Its like having a rumbling stomach and knowing that there is a loaf of loverly home made break baking.

You are sitting there, waiting, and you can smell the declicious smell wafting towards you, and your mouth starts to water. You know that it will be warm, thick, crusty and soft.

After a while you start fantasizing about what will happen to the bread when its done… it may be spread golden with butter, dipped in hot soup, covered with sweet jam, or made into the mother of all sammiches.

But… alas… for bread takes hours and hours and forever to cook. And you know, that if you take it out of the oven a moment too early, you get a gross goey deflated lump of half cooked eggs and flour and yeast.

So you go away, and you forget about the bread for a while, use your waiting time to do something completely different, sleep, walk, game, paint, learn to fly, whatever… and when the time comes, and bread has taken as long as it takes, your patience will be paid off in full, your hungry face will blossom into a smile, and then – OMNOMNOM.

    Hey Pat,

I am so pumped for this game, I donated a long while ago when I read about Brian Fargo getting a number of the old Interplay studio members back together at InXile as P:T, Fallout 1 and 2 were some of my favorite games ever. If you havent played Fallout 1 and 2 do yourself a favor and pick those up as they are also available at GOG.com, more awesome storytelling.

Anywho, when I heard that your involvement would be a stretch goal I immediately lost my shit and upped my pledge. I am a big fan of your books. The writing team for this project is turning out to be more robust than I could have hoped for. Yes.

You know I always wanted to get with that hot succubus Fall-From-Grace in the game but Annah always took exception to my advances towards her. Musings over. Pat, this is all cool. And imma let you finish. But totally off topic:

This may be something you want to see. Money quote:

To understand Jay Silver, it helps to go back 10 years, to a night he spent flying kites on a beach in his native Florida with the woman who would become his wife.
She asked him whether he knew how to listen to the wind. Being an engineer, he responded that wind produces only white noise, and white noise contains no information.
But he loved her, so he opened his mind and gave it a try.
“And I felt a deep joy,”
Silver said during a recent talk at the PopTech conference here. “And then I stopped pursuing information and efficiency, and I changed my life’s course a little and started to practice rituals of joy.”

So now we know how it ends. Kvothe starts controlling computers with bananas. Tricky.

When I heard about the kickstarter, I decided to go back and replay through Planescape : Torment before deciding whether or not to contribute. It was one of my favorite games growing up, but I honestly didn’t remember most of it. After finishing it, I couldn’t wait to donate, and the fact that one of my favorite authors is not only a fan, but will actually be doing some writing for the game, is an amazingly awesome plus. Thanks for pointing the kickstarter out to me Pat! I miss this style of gaming…

    Pat,
Knowing what an amazing game the first Torment was, I could not ignore the excitement surrounding your involvement in the new game. I must confess, I was not previously aware of your work, but your involvement not only helped the kickstarter campaign, it brought you at least one new reader and fan.
