My First Kickstarter – Name of the Wind Playing Cards

Okay, I’ve wanted to write about this for a while now, but I’ve just been too busy.

Ready? Name of the Wind Playing Cards.

NOTW Box ArtOkay. Hopefully I have your attention.

A while back, I fell in love with the work of Shane Tyree when he was doing a kickstarter for a deck of Cthulhu playing cards. I boosted their signal on facebook, they donated to Worldbuilders, and we bought some cards to sell in the Tinker’s Packs. It was the start of a beautiful friendship.

Later, I was delighted to find out that Shane had read my books. More than that, he was a big soppy geek for my books.

Which was a happy coincidence, as I was a big soppy geek for his art.

So we decided to join forces, forming a giant robot that fights crime. In our off time, we thought we’d make a deck of playing cards based on The Name of the Wind.

Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to introduce Kilvin, the King of Diamonds.

Kilvin Color

(You’re going to want to embiggen this….)

As those of you on my facebook fan page have probably already seen, Shane and I have been working together on these cards, doing public google hangouts so  people hear me say things like, “could that face be a little bit less face?” then try to dig up pictures on the internet that show what the hell I’m talking about.

I cannot describe how fun this has been for me. I cannot draw, so art is magic to me. Getting to make art collaboratively with someone like this makes me feel like Gandalf the Grey, Merlin, and Harry Dresden all rolled up into one. Normally when I try to draw something, I feel more like Schmendrick the Magician (in the first half of the book.)

For those of you who haven’t seen them yet, the hangouts we’ve already done are available to watch on their YouTube channel. We’ll be doing more of them over the next nine days or so.

Why only for the next nine days? Well…. because that’s when the the Name of the Wind playing card Kickstarter ends.

Yeah. I’m bad. I should have posted a blog about this *weeks* ago. But I didn’t have any of the art to show off yet.

Like this:

stan-deo

Here’s the initial line art for the King of Hearts. One side is Stancheon, while the obverse is Deoch.

Not to geek out over my own project here, but they turned out So. Cool.

Okay. I’m not going to spend the whole time gushing here. There’s some specific news I have to give you.

  • These are high-quality cards.

These cards are printed by the same folks that make Bicycle brand cards. They’re not shitty flimsy things. I wouldn’t do that to you.

  • It’s not *just* cards.

You can get a bunch of stuff in the kickstarter other than a deck. You can get art prints based on the cards. Magnets. Dice.

You can get poker chips too. And not crappy poker chips either. You can get *nice* poker chips. Those cool clay ones you use in casinos.

Even better, our chips come with kingkiller iconography that I’ve helped Shane design. The red chips have the Amyr’s broken tower. The white chips are the talent pipes. The blue chips have…

Well. If you go over there and look you’ll see what they have on them.

You want a beautiful velvet-lined box to put those chips in, so everybody knows you’re bursting with extra savoir faire? They’ve got those too…

  • We have cool stretch goals.

887d73797f1ce2a32fe7a8dbe150309c_large

Jim has agreed to lend his likeness to the Ambrose card. Because he’s awesome.

a54016a051b87ad84ef01cf3cc869dc5_largeThis one needs a little explaining.

If we hit 160,000 dollars for this kickstarter, it will be the highest funded card kickstarter ever.

That means I’ll have played a part in two of the #1 funded kickstarters ever. (This one, and Torment.)

To celebrate that, I will make a video of myself singing one of my favorite songs. “I Crush Everything” by Jonathan Coulton.

I asked Jon if that was cool with him, and he says he’s okay with it.

More stretch goals will follow after we’ve smashed through these.

Sorry, *crushed* these.

  • It’s for a good cause.

Kickstarter won’t allow funding for charity projects. It’s one of their rules.

But I *can* help run a Kickstarter and then use the money I get from it to support Worldbuilders.

So that’s what we’re doing. Albino Dragon (the studio in charge of this project) was a Worldbuilders sponsor this last year.

So if you head over and decide to buy some stuff, you’re not just buying some cool swag. You’re not just helping support independent artists create something awesome. You’re also making the world a better place, too.

  • Supplies are limited.

Some of the stuff that’s up for grabs only has limited quantities.

For example, they’re doing two editions of the cards.

backs

There will be two printings of the cards. The green back will be a limited edition. We’re printing them once, and when they’re sold out, there simply won’t be any more….

The burgundy back is the unlimited edition. We’re going to be printing those for as long as I have any say in the matter.

And here’s another thing. Something that’s *very* limited.

DSCN1167

This, my friends, is a jot. A copper jot.

I’ve been working with a gentleman numismatist named Tom Maringer to develop the coinage in my world. Because I am a complete geek for coins.

This is one of our prototype jots. It’s not the sort of jot Kvothe would use though. Not quite. This is a jot that would have existed in the Four Corners several hundred years ago.

Tom and I are going to do several limited batches of jots, refining the design until it’s the same counterfeit-proof coin that exists in Kvothe’s world.

We’re only going to make 1000 of this version of the jot, and Tom has graciously agreed to let me add 100 of them to the card Kickstarter. So right now you can be one of the first folks to get one. But only if you jump onboard and before they sell out.

We just added these jots to the Kickstarter tonight, so y’all have a decent chance of heading over and grabbing some. But they *are* going to sell out fast.

I’m sorry for that. Rest assured you will be able to buy these jots later. But probably not online for at least another couple months….

*     *     *

That’s all I’ve got for now, folks. I’ll probably post up one more blog about this before the kickstarter’s over. But honestly, the best way to stay clued-in to what’s happening is to head over there and buy in, even if it’s just for one deck. That way you’ll get all the notifications they send out about new stretch goals,  add-ons they’re making available, and cool art.

Like this, for example,

Later,

pat

P.S. Auri and Elodin are the jokers. If that doesn’t bring you in. I’m guessing nothing will.

    Oh, Pat,

My long-distance love for you has been tempered into a fierce, dark loyalty that will, one day I’m sure, unmake this world.

    I want me some jots!

Moreover, I want to know if the poker chip set will become available to those of us who love your world from afar. I’m something of an amateur poker fiend, and the game nights alone I would inspire with such a commanding and devastating set of playing paraphernalia…

Morer-over, I hope you’re well, Rothfuss! Travelled across the length and breadth of Australia t’other day on the train with only Kvothe for company. I was not lonely.

      Heya Joe,

    ROTHFUUUUUUUSS!

*ahem* sorry. But my purse has suffered greatly in the last months since I backed 3 Kickstarters you recommended and/or are involved in, in fact, those are the only ones I supported thus far. (The Game of Books, Torment and this one) And you just keep adding cool stuff, so I felt the need to up my pledge multiple times thus far. *sigh*

    • Posted June 7, 2013 at 10:07 PM | Permalink

Yeah. The nice thing is that I know when Pat reccomends something, not only is the product going to be good, but that the money is going to a good cause, and the artists involved are getting a fair share of things.

That’s one of the reasons I like Kickstarter. Because the artists are actually getting directly rewarded for their work. It’s not like they’re being fucked by a big studio somewhere, which is what usually happens….

      Huzzah for artists getting paid!

Congratulations good sir, you are officially the owner of my Kickstarter virginity.

    Wait.
    That sounds… wrong.

Gonna leave it there because I’m sure you’ll get a kick out of it.

Not only is this a worthy cause, but those cards are goddamn beautiful. And will make the perfect Xmas gift for my very dear friend, who in addition to treating me better than I deserve, is the lady who introduced me to your work, just after Name of the Wind came out. If they manage to come out in October that would be even better (because then I could give them to her as a BIRTHDAY present!), but December will still do nicely.

Thank you for creating such a lovely world Pat. You rock, and I know when the third book comes out it will be as perfect as the other two. And you can’t rush perfection.

That is fantastic that you’re working with Tom Maringer on jots. I love his Song of Ice and Fire coins!

It sucks that I missed out on the “All of the Things, and a Jot” level, but it’s still awesome! So far I’ve pledged for 2 decks, a coin, poker chips, and 2 prints. I’d like to upgrade to “Deluxe, and a Jot”, but I haven’t quite sold myself on the uncut sheet, and it’s hard to give up a coveted 2 deck slot!

I’ve followed all of the hangouts, and you two do a brilliant job together!

That was a lot of exclamation points, but this really is that exciting!

Hi Pat, I was just wondering if you know of the card game Sopio, and might create something similar – at first I read your post as a card GAME rather than a card deck, which would be totally awesome. :) Not that the card deck isn’t awesome, and I will be pledging henceforth. Thanks.

Yes please! I’ve already been spending more time than I should going over every section of the books where they have been playing it for clues about the game. I’m having to make many assumptions and guesses while spending time on pagat looking for ideas from different bid/trick games (and others). I have some ideas about “double for a counterfeit” and “clever card force”, but I’d love to even just have some more clues as to what these existing descriptions indicate about the game.

Generally, I read through your blog posts at a gentle pace, enjoying hearing about what you’re up to. I’ve been following the kickstarter for awhile now, so most of this wasn’t new to me.

Then I saw the sentence, “This, my friends, is a jot.”

I immediately stopped. It was jarring how suddenly my eyes were rooted on the word “jot.” The first thing that went through my brain was, “I MUST HAVE ONE”

    So I ended up going from a $50 pledge…to a $275 pledge…

I’m very much looking forward to this.

I ran into an unexpected young man with long-ish red hair (yes, that color red) at the local book store. He was encouraging his friend to buy a copy of The Name of the Wind, so naturally I wandered around the stack of books and said “That’s a *good* book.”, after which followed the giddy delight unique among fans who share favorite authors.

Having recently discovered the Kickstarter myself, I told him of it and took myself off again, leaving his friend blinking in bewilderment.

I’m not sure if this is intentional, but on Kvothe’s card (king of spades) the portrait with him smiling shows “folly” as the bottom word that’s half-visible. On the other half of the card, “wary” is the half-visible word. Seems like it should be “folly” in both of them.

Either way, the cards look great. I barely ever use playing cards, but that didn’t seem to matter as soon as I saw how awesome Kilvin’s card looked.

I know Pat asked this on his FB page, but I’d like to put my recommendation here. The moment when Kvothe uses Felurian’s true name to show his mastery over her would be an awesome Queen card design. How Kvothe uses his very breath to suround her in wind, and how it burst into silvery flames around her. To have a visualization of this beyond what is in my mind would be astoundingly beautiful. It represents the first time he was in complete control of a fully awakened sleeping mind, and demonsrated what Kvothe could do with it.

“I cupped my hands and breathed a sigh into the hollow space within. I spoke a name. I moved my hands and wove my breath gossamer-thin. It billowed out, engulfing her, then burst into a silver flame that trapped her tight inside its changing name. I held her there above the ground. She watched me with an air of fear and disbelief, her dark hair dancing like a second flame inside the first.” -Patrick Rothfuss, WMF

    • Taravangian
      Posted June 5, 2013 at 1:48 AM | Permalink

That’s something that they may consider for the WMF deck, which Pat and Shane have already teased on the live hangouts. But I doubt they intend to include Felurian in the NotW deck, since she’s not actually involved in the story for that book. I’d bank on Felurian being a prime candidate for one of the queen cards in the next deck, if and when they begin to plan that. For now though, they’re focusing on this deck for NotW.

      • Fascinatedbymagic
        Posted June 5, 2013 at 2:28 AM | Permalink

You’ve got a good point. Felurian is only mentioned in passing in NoTW during the introduction when Kvothe says you may have heard of me. Here’s to hoping for a WMF deck then, this one’s done so well I wouldn’t be surprised at all by them doing it.

You realize that, being that the only two kickstarters that you’ve been affiliated with have been the most successful of whatever type they were, that you’re going to have to have a reality check and realize that you’re a pretty big name author. Of the first rate, in quality at least.

It is only partly that the money is going to a cause other than you; I would be happy to see you get rich off of the profits of our joy. You are a charitable man; possibly the most I know. That is amazing. You make me realize that most of what I have can be reapproiated, and you let me know that what I give is going to people who not only need, but use my gift. Thank you, Pat. Thank you for making it feel good to give, and for making us all feel good about ourselves while you do more work and make a bigger sacrifice than any of us. Had I not read your books, I would say your service is your greatest achievement. It still might be said (at least at this point), that your generosity is your greatest achievement. I would ever want to encroach upon that. But your writing has inspired thousands, if not millions of us to give just a bit to a cause you deem worthy. Bravo, Mr. Rothfuss. Bravo. You have redesigned scholastic fantasy, and before most people realized it, you have also dug into a way to redesign the world.

This. Exactly this. Not only am I helping a charity. I’m supporting an artist who makes gorgeous art, and helping his company grow…

Pat and staff: I’m so sorry for all these questions, but how do we get these new stretch goal rewards?

It depends. Some rewards, you need do nothing. The PDF wallpaper pack will be sent to all backers, probably by way of an update to the Kickstarter page, or else via email, at no cost. Pat’s performance of “I Crush Everything” and his reading of “The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle” will be recorded on video for all to see at no cost.

Most of the other rewards will unlock optional paid add-ons. In these cases, such as the extra art prints, dice, magnets, &c., you can add the stated amount to your pledge by clicking the “Manage your pledge” button on the Kickstarter page. e.g., if you want a $12 art print and you pledged $30 for three limited edition decks, change your pledge amount to $42.

After the campaign ends, you’ll get a survey email where they say “Hey, you pledged at the $30, so what do you want to get with the extra $12 you’re paying?” Then you say, “I would like the art print of Kvothe and the Scraeling.”

I really really really want a deck (awesome art+poker nights+ boyfriend loves card games =WIN!) but employment eludes the recent graduate. Will the unlimited edition be available for sale later on? I weep at the lost opportunity for all the cool stuff, but, such is the way.

First time to get a WordPress account, first time to pledge in Kickstarter, first time to post an actual comment on your blog. My, Mr. Rothfuss, you have given me many firsts tonight. The geek in me just couldn’t resist. Thank you for being so awesome!

I would like to pledge for one deck but im not sure how to add the add-ons or the stretch goals to my pledge …. also does the gaf card come with the limited edition deck of cards?
Ps. I love the books and have been recomending to my friends :D cant wait for the 3rd book

For the add-ons and stretch goals add the price of each additional item you want ($12 for prints, $25 for t-shirt, ect) to your total pledge amount in the pledge amount box. You’ll be asked at the end of the funding period where the extra money beyond your selected reward is going towards.

As far as the gaf card goes there is always two of them in any playing card deck you buy, usually an ad or the rules to poker. Kickstarter is replacing one of the two with Lorren’s Gaf, so it’s a safe bet that both the limited and unlimited decks will have them.

Seriously if we didn’t have a second child on the way I would be spending all of my tax return on this. Some of the rewards are insanely cool. The hardest thing about growing up is actually being an adult. (Yes I’m dieing on the inside).

Would Jim Butcher be interested in doing a Dresden Files deck? That would also be all kinds of cool. Then you could be in his cards as… hmm…
