Honestly folks, I don’t even know where to begin today. I’ve got a lot of cool news to share about the Kickstarter.
And this is legitimately cool news. Not bullshit cool news that I just made up so I could pimp the project one last time before it closes in less than two days.
(Click to Embiggen Devi)
Because it *is* over in less than two days. Be warned.
Note: Please stay tuned to the end. Or skip directly down there. We have stunning news at the end of the blog.
- We Crushed Everything
In the last blog I wrote about this project, I mentioned that if our Kickstarter hit 160K we would be the highest funded card-based Kickstarter ever.
The next day y’all stomped in to the tune of about 70,000 dollars, blowing past that goal and every other stretch goal we’d planned out.
In celebration, Shane drew a picture of me as a sort of great Krakken-bearded beast.
Because everyone loved it so much, we made the art available as magnet and t-shirt add-ons.
We currently stand at 440,000 dollars. Almost three times the previous record. The video of me singing will be forthcoming.
- More Jots
I added 100 more jots to the kickstarter, doubling the previous levels.
I mention this early in the blog so those you can hopefully go and grab some before they’re all gone again.
Here’s a picture of the finished product, complete with the maker’s mark. Rest assured, more jots will be available in the future. Both in the Tinker’s Packs, and as a Worldbuilders fundraiser toward the end of the year.
- Better Gaff Cards
Here’s the thing: all poker decks come with 2 gaff cards. They’re pretty useless. They usually have the rules for poker or some advertizement.
Shane and I came up with the idea of replacing them with something cool. We set stretch goals, then burned right through them….
So now we’re having:
1. A Lorren Gaff card that people can use as a bookmark. (Image forthcoming.)
2. A Willem Gaff card that you can use as a replacement card in your deck in case one of the cards is damaged.
All the Limited and Unlimited decks will have these Gaff cards included free.
We do this because we love you.
- Signed Lorren Bookplates
Using the Lorren card art, Shane is going to make me a bookplate. My very first bookplate ever.
There’s only two ways of getting this bookplate.
1. You can add one to your order for five bucks. (Up to three.)
2. You get one for free if your order is $135 or more.
That’s it. Those are the only two ways to get them.
Would I love to include these bookplates with every order? Yes. But as it is, please understand that I’m going to be signing, like, 3000 of them. If I gave one away with every order, I’d be signing them for *days.*
That said, we have a stretch goal set at 450K. If we hit that, I’ll give one to everyone who buys in for 100 bucks or more.
- Marked Cards
Or, as I like to think of it, the Taborlin deck.
I’ve always wanted a deck of marked cards. So I asked Shane if we could do one. And he said yes. And so we are…
You can add a marked deck to any Kickstarter pledge for 15 bucks. And they have a different back from the others.
(I love the imagery here.)
Now here’s the thing: am I creating a deck of cards for cheaters?
No. I’m making a marked deck of cards. Because I think it’s cool.
Now you could use this deck of cards for evil if you wanted. But that’s your choice. You can use a screwdriver to kill someone if you wanted. That’s not necessarily what a screwdriver is for.
I like to think of this as the Taborlin deck because it will be *awesome* for card tricks.
Also, I’d get together with my friends and have a night of poker where everyone *tries* to cheat. Where it is effectively, *fair* to cheat. We would also probably drink whiskey and pretend to be cowboys of some sort.
Because I am seven years old inside, apparently.
In this deck, the gaff cards won’t be Wil and Lorren. They’ll contain the details of the marked-card cypher.
- International shipping on the poker sets
Because several of you asked for this in the comments, we’ve added that as a special donation tier. (The rest of you can add the box sets as a simple add-on.)
The international shipping is expensive, but that’s because those high-quality clay chips are *heavy* and we’re going to be packaging them very, very carefully.
- Guest appearances by Neil Gaiman and Felicia Day
Neil and Felicia graciously allowed us to use their likenesses for our two jokers: Elodin and Auri.
We listed these as stretch goals and met them less than a day later.
Reactions were divided. Some people made a vast ululating *squee* noise. Others said something along the lines of, “Boo! I want to see the *real* Auri and Elodin!”
So I just want to clarify things. We aren’t just going to draw Gaiman as Elodin, as if he were doing some sort of cosplay. That would be lame.
(Actually, that would be kinda awesome….)
But no. That’s not what’s going on here at all.
First off, the main reason Shane and I thought of Neil and Felicia is because they both possess certain characteristics we feel are very appropriate to Elodin and Auri.
Hell, I did an interview with Felicia on my blog back in 2008. Back before she was FELICIA DAY. While we were chatting, I asked which part she’d pick if she could play anyone in The Name of the Wind movie. She said, “My dream role would be Auri. I like playing damaged goods….”
And I thought, Yeah. I could totally see that. She has a whimsy about her that would be perfect….
Does that mean Auri is going to have red hair like Felicia? No. Obviously not. Auri will have Auri’s hair. But her expression and face will be influenced by Felicia’s because it works for the character.
It’s the same way we brought Jim Butcher in as everyone’s favorite Jackass:
(God. I want to slap him so much….)
It doesn’t really look too much like Jim, but if you know it’s there, you can spot it.
Gaiman is a similar good fit for Elodin. Trust me about this. Neil and Felicia are perfect for my two wise fools.
- Superhero Team-Up
Almost exactly 24 hours ago, I did a video conference with Shane and Erik, the folks behind Albino Dragon. We were going to plan our strategies for the final days of the kickstarter. Plan stretch goals. Talk strategy.
But before we could get into that, Shane said, “We’d like to give 5% of Albino Dragon to Worldbuilders.”
“Sorry?” I said.
“We’d like to give 5% of Albino Dragon to Worldbuilders.”
And then I just kinda sat there. I knew what he’d said, but I didn’t quite believe he’d said it.
So I asked. “Do you mean you’d like to give Worldbuilders a piece of the profit from this project? More than we already negotiated?”
No, he said. Then he explained again.
“Are you serious?” I asked.
Shane and Erik have built this company themselves with their time and energy, with their blood and sweat and money.
And they want to give a piece of it to Worldbuilders.
We couldn’t mention it on the kickstarter itself, of course. Because kickstarter projects can’t be directly associated with charities.
But yes, they were serious.
“And if we hit 500,000 before the end of the kickstarter,” Erik said. “We’d like to give you another 5%.”
It’s not often that I’m caught completely flat-footed and at a loss for words. But I was, I honestly was.
Eventually I kinda pulled myself together. “That’s really amazingly generous of you guys,” I said. “It’s amazingly kind of you. I’m so flattered, and I’m floored, and I’m stupefied. It’s one of the most ridiculously generous things anyone has ever offered me, and I don’t know how to respond.”
Then I paused and took a deep breath. “But maybe you want to think this over. Chat about it. Make sure it’s something you really want to do. We can talk about it some more tomorrow.”
And they kinda laughed at me. They explained that they’d already thought it over and talked about it. Which is why they were making me the offer now.
I nodded for a while kinda absentmindedly, getting my head together.
“If you let me tell this story on my blog,” I said. “Me and my people will blow the fucking roof off the last two days of this kickstarter. We will bring thunder and fury to your very door. We will shake the earth.”
They said they were okay with that.
So. Here is our 500K stretch goal.
Now. Let’s be honest here. Are Shane and Erik being generous? Absolutely.
Are they being perfect, saintlike altruists? No. They’re clever folks. Really amazingly clever. Because with a single piece of outside-the-box thinking and startling generosity, they’ve brought me onto their team. I’m going to *so* many projects with them in the future. So many.
And you know what? I’m fine with that. Because they do awesome work.
This is the best sort of cleverness. The sort of cleverness where everyone is awesome, and everyone wins.
Now I’m not asking y’all to rush over and join the kickstarter. If you’ve already signed up, I’m not asking you to run over and increase your order.
But if you were thinking of picking up some of the new add-ons anyway…. Well, you can make that purchase knowing that an even larger portion of the money is going to a good cause.
And if you have a friend that loves NOTW, and you wanted to buy them an deck of cards as early Christmas present…. Well, you can rest assured that not only will that deck be as awesome as I can make it, but that the money is going directly to the artists. To the company they themselves own.
And if you wanted to twitter about this. Or talk about it on your blog. Or drop a link to this blog on facebook….
Well, I’d take that as a kindness. Because we have less than two days left.
And I’d really like to show Shane and Erik that they’ve made a good choice here.
Later space cowboys,
pat
P.S. If you have any questions about the kickstarter. You can ask them in the comments here. I’ll answer the ones I can. But tomorrow’s a busy day, and I’m flying out to Ohio for a convention.
So if some of the more kickstarter-savvy among you can help out with some answers too, I’d really appreciate it.

how much will it cost to get the $31 pledge to the uk?
$39 ($31 + $8 for shipping outside the US)
It would cost $39 which converts to approximately 25£.
Coolio. Just got the unlimited deck, + more money. If we pledge extra, we get asked what add-ons we want post Kick-Starter completion, right? Right?!?
Oh, and it’s awesome what they’re doing.
Hi Ali, on the kickstarter it says to add $8 for shipping outside US (on the $31 level). So make a pledge for $39, and you will be golden :)
Hi Pat,
The kickstarter is amazing and that it also will help worldbuilders is just awesome.
But I have a question concerning the international royal & nobel set added to the project today: why isn’t the signed limited card deck included in those pledges? If it would have been included I would have had no other choice than to up my pledge.
I hope the kickstarter crushes the 500k ;-)
Greetings from Germany!
To further expand on what SimSla said, The international royal and noble sets were not available until just yesterday. The 100 signed limited decks were allocated long before then.
There are 5 signed decks remaining (2 in noble II and 3 in royal pledge levels). You could shoot an email to Erik and ask if special arrangements could be made to pay the difference for shipping.
I’ve added to mine. This is going to be a logistic nightmare with the add-on’s though. Either way, it’s a good cause, and your books helped me in a dark time so they/you/it are worth it.
Acutally Vince it won’t be AD is using backerkit to do the add-ons.
I’ve used it before with another card KS and it rocks! The process will be very easy and as such would make it easy for them to get the right items to everyone.
Cheers!
Yeah. I used BackerKit when I ordered from Dwarven Forge in their kickstarter, and it was *very* easy to use. The interface is much better than Kickstarter’s, in all honesty.
I wanted the Dwarven Forge so badly. I have so much envy for all that have their goods coming.
That’s great to hear Deeniebee, thank you for the heads up :)
Also, congratulations Pat/AD/Fans on tearing apart the new goal.
Great news, Pat. I hope we’re able to crush the half mil goal. Kudos to Albino Dragon for this great idea.
Just to be clear. Are they giving 5% now and 5% more when we reach 500K, or will they only give some part of the company IF we reach 500K? Because the transcript indicates the former and the stretch card indicates the latter.
@battlequeen: There were only 100 of these decks and they’re all gone. I was lucky enough to grab one of the separate signed decks. :-)
@Vince: I can’t even begin to imagine the nightmare of handling those add-ons when the project ends (they have a couple of months to sort things out, though). I rounded up, just in case I made a mistake with the international shipping costs.
I’d trust the transcript over the stretch card.
See my above post to Vince about the add-ons and how they will be handling it =)
Oh, I don’t mean complicated for us. I meant complicated (as in: a *lot* of work) to organise shipping when every package you put together is different than the last.
Dammit Rothfuss.
First you take my (kickstarter) virginity, THEN you go and add those awesome signed book plates?!
Gah. I’m a poor student with a family! Stop tempting me, you wonderful bearded siren you.
Out of curiosity, are the book plates going to be personalized’ or just autographed? Either is awesometastic of course. Just trying to get an idea of how much fan girl squeeing I should brace myself for when I give my friend the deck and bookplate (though it will quite possibly be lacking a Lorren gaff card because dammiti want that as a bookmark!)
Not personalized, I’m afraid. That way lies madness and severe hand cramps…..
Awesome news. $500k? Pfft, no problem! Can’t wait to watch these final hours unfold, not to mention to watch this partnership grow down the road. This project has been such a joy to follow.
Agreed. I have become a total Facebook/Albino Dragon stalker looking for the next hangout. It has been fun to watch, and even more fun (I really wanted to say funner but knew the grammar police out there would think I don’t know how to write) to know you have been a part of this project. While I can’t wait to get the bling I ordered, even if it was just a donation, I feel kinda warm and fuzzy inside. (Hopefully the antibiotics will help that.)
Any chance you’re going to have some time for a poker game at Gencon Indy? Perhaps a (short!) worldbuilders charity tournament? Because I would totally buy in to that. Or run it.
If you join their team I want to see a “dresden files” deck in near future. We both know this would be awesome :)
What is this ‘Wise Man’s Fear project’ stretch goal boost extra thing?
I think they plan to create a second deck with more focus on characters which appear in WMF.
Aaahh, that would make much sense. Thankyou kindly.
Yup. This deck focuses on NOTW. That deck will focus on the WMF and the characters that only show up there….
Hey Pat,
How much could I add to get my deck signed? I already have $82 pledged for four decks; 2 limited and 2 unlimited. I would absolutely love to have 1 of each signed by you if possible. Name a price?
Thanks a ton for being the best author I’ve had the pleasure to read books and blog alike,
Phillip R E Fisher Jr
I’m afraid I won’t be signing decks for this run. But if you catch me at a convention, or a bookstore, I could probably be persuaded to sign a few….
I understand. Any way possible us readers can convince you to come to the south? I live in Alabama currently and would be glad to drive to Tennessee or Georgia or somewhere within a few hours drive. You have lots of fans down here that would go I’m sure.
Thanks for replying,
Phillip
How do I do add-ons? I know I can add dollar amounts, but where do I indicate what is being added on?
Lisa — You’ll indicate the add-ons later. Once the kickstarter is finished, Eric will get in touch with everyone (as others mentioned above, logistical nightmare…) and find out what you wanted as an add-on.
Thank you so much! So if I want X bookplates, I just add that to what I’ve pledged and submit and I’m done. Sweet!
Yup. That’s the way.
Helloooo bookplate! What an awesome add on. And you are correct, this is legitimately cool news. So excited that they are being so generous (and wily) – I love that one of my favorite authors is also into doing good things for other people. World Builders is awesome, and so are you.
We’re all awesome.
Wow, I think this is all amazing, i wish i could spend lots of money on this cause. Aniway, i have a question. If i make a pledge of 31$ for example, the add ons that costs 30$ are included, or i would have to pledge another 30$?
If you pledge $31 and choose the $ 31 tier, then you will get, as it says, three different kind of decks (limited, unlimited, white rabbit). If you want anything else, you must add extra for the stuff you want (so in your case, if you want the $ 31 tier and an add on that costs $30, then add $31 (and shipping if needed))
Well, I’m really broke right now and was agonizing over jumping in…and they they said “Worldbuilders” and that got me over the line. =)
Any chance the ‘Pat Crushes Everything’ T-shirt might one day reach the tinker’s pack/Worldbuilders?
I’m broke right now, I’ve got the cards on the way but I just can’t make the add-on in time
I hate to say it, but I think that’s one of the add-ons that’s going to be exclusive to the kickstarter….
Thanks for lettin me know, Pat!
If you are comfortable with it (and it isn’t against any rules?), I can add the shirt to my order until such a time you would like to claim one. Being broke and a fan of awesome things sucks, I can relate.
So, if it is okay with you and the powers that be, I would love to help a fellow fan and lover of genuinely good writing and storytelling. :)
My readers are pretty great people. You warm my heart.
Just saying.
That was the sound of my heart growing 3 sizes
Woah! Yes, wow – that’s so cool, thank you – you rock! :D
What’s the best way for me to fix you up in the future, ClosedEyesSeeing? Probably next month at this stage, is that too long?
No timeframe, I’ll keep it safe for you in the meanwhile. :)
Feel free to send me an email to my public address: [email protected]
I’ll then reply back with my private one and we’ll make sure we get you what you want.
Fantastic, e-mail sent :D
Thank you again!
If we get it up to the 500K mark, will you come and tour further south? Like Georgia, north Florida, the Carolinas, Tennessee…pretty much anywhere within an 8 hour drive of Atlanta and we’ll come to you=P
I seconded coming to Florida, but make it central so we all can meet in the center, every book author that comes to town goes to Miami and sometimes that’s just not feasible for me with work and whatnot, at least Central Florida I can get the hubby to make a 2-day trip of it and see Universal Studios too ;)
He was in Florida last month. Pretty central location, too. :)
One book for govern them all. One book for find them all, one book for atracting them all and tie them in the shadows in Atlanta where the shadows grow.
jajaja. Your commentary, bristowr, made me think in that xd.
Truly a job well done here Pat.
This will be a wonderful Christmas present to myself once this arrives. The wife will be fuming, but surely it will be well worth it.
My heart wants to buy in to the $500 level but my bank account says NO!!!! YOU CANNOT DO THAT! YOU CAN’T LIVE IN A HOUSE MADE OUT OF PLAYING CARDS. But my heart really wants to. I feel good about what I could do. And even if people were only able to donate the minimum for a deck of cards you should feel good too. Everyone helped create this. I hope we made Pat proud. (I am sure we did).
You’re absolutely right. This is 100% team effort.
And I’d never want people jumping in for more than they’re comfortable with, or more than they can afford. A person who buys a deck, is helping just as much as someone who can afford to buy a set of chips.
My heart really, REALLY wanted that $2K pledge for Bast’s girlfriend…but my brain, wallet, bank account, and credit cards beat me until I came to my senses and realized that’s way out of my range.
…would’ve been way awesome though :)
I’m sure this isn’t the best place, but I’d like to put in a plea that Auri be something other than voluptuous. (My mental image of her is slim and waifish.) You’ve got male characters represented in various shapes and sizes, but Laurian and Devi have similar torsos.
This is just even more awesome news its swayed me even more to biy the tinkers leather bag!
What typw of bag is this a sachel? A rucksack? Or just a sorta sack bag?
Would sway me to add this ontop of the 98$ already if i knew the type of bag (hint hint)
Really hope that you reach the half mil mark pat :D
You can see the bag here at 1:06:10 – 1:06:10

I haven’t seen it myself. But it’s big enough to fit several decks of cards and some of the card holders/chips/etc. And it’s apparently made of really nice leather.
Thanks for doing this, Pat–this is an awesome effort for us, for you, for Albino Dragon and for Worldbuilders…a win win win win situation!
I’m probably exhibiting signs of my age here, but I can’t find the info on adding a jot or two to my pledge. Are they gone? The text under the Jot Add-On seems to continue under the “Unlocked” type, so instructions might be there.
$500,000, I see you!
There is no way to buy one of the pro-type jots as an add-on. You can only get them as part of one of the pledge levels. I’m shameless cutting and pasting the info below from another post:
From Pat’s original blog post about the Jots:
https://blog.patrickrothfuss.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DSCN1167.jpg
“This, my friends, is a jot. A copper jot.
I’ve been working with a gentleman numismatist named Tom Maringer to develop the coinage in my world. Because I am a complete geek for coins.
This is one of our prototype jots. It’s not the sort of jot Kvothe would use though. Not quite. This is a jot that would have existed in the Four Corners several hundred years ago.
Tom and I are going to do several limited batches of jots, refining the design until it’s the same counterfeit-proof coin that exists in Kvothe’s world.
We’re only going to make 1000 of this version of the jot, and Tom has graciously agreed to let me add 100 of them to the card Kickstarter. So right now you can be one of the first folks to get one. But only if you jump onboard and before they sell out.
We just added these jots to the Kickstarter tonight, so y’all have a decent chance of heading over and grabbing some. But they *are* going to sell out fast.
I’m sorry for that. Rest assured you will be able to buy these jots later. But probably not online for at least another couple months….”
Thanks, Milkus. Here’s my point of confusion: The levels at which jots are available are full. I am happy to upgrade my pledge to a “jot” level, but don’t see how to do that. Does that make sense? If not, I’ll just let it rest and buy one later.
The $460 (Tinker’s pack and a jot) pledge is the only remaining pledge with jots. All the others have been sold out.
So you still can, but it’s not cheap. :-)
Ouch! Thanks, SimSla.
Just upped my donation. I really hope we can surpass the 500k mark.
I finally got around to putting something in this. I saw it a while ago and got sidetracked or something… so thanks for reminding me!
Just $10k to $500k as of this post!
IMPORTANT:
While in Columbus, you have the opportunity to eat the best sandwich you’ve ever eaten in your life. Go to Katalina’s (http://www.cafecornercolumbus.com/) and get the Mazatlan slow roasted pork and egg sandwich.
If it’s not the best sandwich you’ve ever had I’ll throw worldbuilders $100.
I’m not even halfway shitting you. The sandwich is orgasmic.
Help I can’t figure out how to add an add on! someone please get back to me!
Just add the amount that a particular add on costs, and after the kickstarter closes, they will send a survey to see how you want to spend it
alright thanks
First off thanks for all the great stuff. Second any thoughts on doing a tarot like style deck with the larger card size and bigger artwork? Just a thought love the art and the source. Have a good one.
I think they are currently working on a tarot deck, though not with Kingkiller iconography…
I cannot begin to put into words how utterly AWESOME it is that they are willing to give Pat 10% of the company they built with their own sweat, blood and tears. I’m truly glad to be a part of this project. I don’t think we’ll have any problems hitting the 500k.
BTW can we get rid of that sandwich add from ericturner29? If not, can we get him to send us all a bunch of them for wasting our time reading it?

Please delete my post above(https://blog.patrickrothfuss.com/2013/06/name-of-the-wind-kickstarter-final-days-and-the-coolest-news-ever/#comment-39686)
Sorry.
Aw come on, the guy likes a sandwich, and wanted to share that love with a visiting, ahem, dignitary. If you need to be sent a sandwich to reimburse you for your time reading it, either you are a CEO (in which case–buy us all a sandwich!) or a VERY slow reader.
I’m both happy and sad that the stretch for putting out The Wiseman’s Fear next was reached.
I had to convince my husband that this was a good investment for my birthday present! T_T
Now I’ll have to convince him to get me a Christmas present, too!
If I add $5 to my donation, will I automatically get the Lorren bookplate along with the other benefits of donating that money, or do I have to specify somewhere that I want one?
There is a 5$ bookplate add on, which means you will just add 5 to your pledge, and when the kickstarter is over, they will ask you what it is for
My understanding is that they will contact you to ask you what the extra $ is for, and then you reply back and tell them it’s for the bookplate. (or whatever) You’re not alone in being confused – this project started with 1 item, and now has nearly 25, plus 15+ art prints. All within 5 weeks! =)
Those additional add-ons are killin’ me! I think I’ve increased my pledge 6 times now! The hard part is going to be deciding which magnets and art prints to choose – I want them all!
I tried to order the limited deck while it was still one left, and I was really happy it was still one there because I really really wanted it. But then, when I was about to finish the order and pay for it did I get a message telling me that it was no one left.
And now I’m really disappointed and sad. I was in the middle of ordering an paying and someone else could still take it?
I know it was stupid to wait until the very very end, but I had to ask my parents to help me order, and I was really scared to do so because they just haver expensive shoes and stuff. Didn’t want to ask for more.
Anyway, I ordered to unlimited instead, but is there still some kid of way to get a limited one? Please? Pretty please? I can make you a pretty drawing and mail to you as a thank you.
Someone might change their pledge reward and open up a spot, so keep checking. I’ve seen a couple spots open up for the $20 double limited deck in the last few hours (snagged one myself luckily).
Thank you for the tip <: I have been stalking the project all night and someone finally changed their pledge so that I could switch to a limited one (:
Enjoy :)
Like Blake mentioned above, I wanted to add the marked cards. I didn’t see an option for them so I just added $15 manually. Anyone know if that is right? Hopefully it works because I am already planning some amazing ‘mind reading’ tricks.
You’re OK, don’t worry.
Bravo. 500,000
CONGRATULATIONS on reaching $500K!!!
Way to go Pat. This is great for everyone involved. Thanks for explaining the who’s and why’s. I love your work. I have followed you since I read about the ” writers of the future” . I was buying you first book on kindle, then went to store to buy the hard back, as soon as it came out. (which was lost in a fire, sad, not going there…).
Then book 2 as soon as it was out in both hardback and kindle.
I also love Shane’s art and seeing him bringing the story to life….
There are no words.
Your bringing in an amazing amount to your charity and that is a great deed, you should feel all warm and fuzzy.
Good luck and now, back to the 4th reading…..
We did it. I have done exactly one good thing today, and this was it….
So with the Add-Ons I pay the price in the INTL column and that covers shipping right? With the dice it says “$3 per pair. $2 for your first pair on INTL orders” Does that mean international dice are $2 for the first pair or $5 for the first pair to cover the additional shipping?
I believe for international orders its $5 for your first pair of dice. $8 for your seconds, 11 for your third….
Could we learn how to play Corners? That’s the first thing I want to do with these new cards!
THIS. PLEASE! All kinds of THIS.
This so much it HURTS
You have…I…Yes. Yes Yes and more Yes.
Will the poker chips be purchasable, post kickstarter?
If I could make a suggestion for the next project: leather-bound, collector’s editions of Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear. Embossed, leather covers and maybe some add-on full-color art prints of scenes from the novel. Maybe a series of numbered and/or signed at additional cost.
I would seriously love to put these right next to my leather-bound LOTR set (and it’d also help me take care of my Christmas present for my little brother NEXT year, since the limited cards and some prints are handling THIS year)
Thanks to Pat, Worldbuilders, and Albino Dragon for the heady double-whammy of providing an awesome product for an amazing cause.
This work is amazing. I just picked up these 2 books about two weeks ago and I am on my second read thru. The story is amazing and the artwork with this project is mind blowing. If this project last another few weeks I’d be pledging on, that said I fully intend to purchase these cards (and hopefully poker chips if available). So psyched for this set and the next book.
I know I’m joining the conversation a little late, but I just saw the Kvothe (Kote, I suppose) artwork on the Kickstarter site… and I couldn’t but stare at it and be a little melancholy for a minute. Pat, if you talk to the artists in the near future, and actually read this (you’re busy being you [something we’re all grateful for, if I may speak for the group]), please thank them for that moment, from me.
So I thought I was going to get away cheaply on this one…Ha! I joined the Kickstarter at the beginning, but then they had to go and add on all these great things! So I upped my pledge. I even convinced a friend who has never read the books to join based solely on the artwork, and now she’s reading NOTW (finally). I will probably never use these beautiful cards to actually play cards, since I wouldn’t want people to smudge them, or even touch them, but maybe I’ll have a framed set of playing cards in my house in a few months. Is that weird?
Ahhh damn you, Rothfuss, you magnificent bearded Siren. You’ve pulled me onto the rocky shores of unwise purchasing yet again.
But, when the horn sounds, one must do one’s duty…
Is that a mixed metaphor? I think it is.
My birthday is this 25. I had to order a book for amazon (Temeraire, not bad), and I was lazy about doing that, because in Amazon there is always a problem. Today I was going to buy the book, and because I’ve never waited some thing more than The Kingkiller Chronicles (I’m serious here, every day and in every moment I think about Kvothe my heart hurts a little like demanding “get the fucking book”, so pardon me if sometimes I’m a little I want the book now) I went to your blog (a routine I do 3 times aproximately per day).
I had read this blog, but I went to the kickstarter. Why?, I’m not going to buy anything, I thought. I, for a joke, went to add money, to see what they could offer. And 2 minutes later I bought 1 limited deck and 1 unlimited deck, jajaja
Truly, when I went to the page, I wasn’t thinking to buy anything. When I wnet to add money here, I wasn’t thinking to buy anything. When I saw all the offers I wasn’t. When I saw the 28 money deck, then, only then, It was a ¡BOOM!, and now I’m almost trembling with desire).
Thank you for creating waht I think it’s the best fantasy book wrote in, at least 20 years, and I hope it becomes a classic.
Dylan, Spain (I suppose you aren’t going to use the arcane, and I think I can give you my real name, as a debt of grattitude).
My math skills are crap, but I have tried to figure out how many limited edition decks there will be and I came up with something like 20,000? Am I over estimating this?
Also, I hope there will be enough bookplates for everyone who adds $5. Will it be a first come first served sort of thing, where whoever gets their email in first gets first pick? Otherwise, Pat, you are gonna have major hand cramps for days!
PS: So, when the 3rd book comes out, by then I will probably have the second Princess and Mr. Whiffle, and my playing cards for you to sign when you come to Orange County! If you take too long, there may even be WMF playing cards……
……just do a bang up job, no matter how long it takes…..
By my count there are 15497 available limited editions. As of this morning it looks like 14406 are spoken for.
Thank you!
I have to ask Pat, how does it feel to wield magic?
With just a few words you’ve called down thunder and fury, and I believe I felt the earth shake all the way from Canada.
On a marginally related note: You’re awesome!
Ok I feel a bit dumb, but I totally don’t get how to add add ons. I’d really like to have added a book plate. Additionally, first I pledged 28$ for 2 limited edition decks (plus international shipping) but got told that there were none left, so I pledged another 28$ for 1 limited and 1 unlimited deck (which was sold out before) but now I have two active payment authorisations in my amazon. I’m confused. Help?
Ok, should’ve read the comments, I’m good now. :)
As long as you only have one kickstarter account, I believe that the most recent is the only one that will be charged… In order to get add ons, all you need to do is manage your pledge by adding the required amount of money, and afterwards, Albino Dragon will ask what you want to do with the extra money via Backerkit
Speaking of the logistical nightmare that calculating all those add-ons could be… I’m a math/science geek myself, and I know there are more of us on here. Is there a way we could come up with the formula or some programming to help Albino Dragon troll through the kickstarter accounts? The initial form email should be easy enough, but is there a module the email could contain (very basic format, so anyone could use it regardless of platform) so that when the responses start pouring in, Albino Dragon just has to run the module inputs through to spit out the list of how many of add-on X goes to contributor Y? I was looking through the numbers and yow… Sum(x*N) where N=0 to inifinity [theoretically] and x = each of the 55 available add-ons (not counting combination possibilities) for each of nearly 11,000 people. I’m not smart enough to do this, but I think we could work on it in concert with others. Anyone? Bueller?
Another kickstarter I pledged to uses Backerkit (www.backerkit.com). They send out an email to all the backers, you go and fill out a form online, and it does it all for them. Also confirms your shipping address. Might be something to consider, though I don’t know if they charge or anything.
Between the Kickstarter, the conventions and all the other side projects, how much time do you dedicate to writing book 3? The cards look awesome by the way.
P.s thinking about using The King Killer Chronicles as a three part novel study for my students in the future, think I’d be able to pull it off with any grade other than grade 12?
Just my two cents, of course, but I suspect that you’d be able to take grades from 10-12 through a novel study project with this series. Once the third book comes out, I have not the slightest doubt that a lot of the unexplained foreshadowing and still-loose-ends will be made clear and tidied up. That should mean, besides the story being exciting and enticing and utterly enthralling, and the words themselves vibrant and poetic (lyrical? I’d hate to use the word “poetic” to describe Kote’s narrative without qualifying it), that all the fascinating world-building and literary devices that move the plot will be ripe for study.
Does kickstarter take PayPal?
Not as of now, as far as i know… Looks like credit cards, amazon payment…
Could you try to be less awesome? This is costing me a lot of money. I asked my hubby if I could buy A deck of cards, not several of them… plus magnets. But the magicians deck is too good to pass up.
So… it’s now at $563,350… with 11,077 backers… and growing!
Well, I just missed being a backer by…just over 30 minutes. Not happy with myself :( Any chance of extending or reopening the pledging process? I’m not really sure how that all works, but if it’s not possible, will any of the decks be available through The Tinker’s Packs?
I was out of state taking care of family for the last month. I took a leave of absence from my job and stuck my hubby with the bills in order to do that, so funds were tight. I’m back to work this week, and was wondering if the decks or any of the other swag will be in the tinkers packs eventually? I would love basically a deck of everything and a few others. *g*
There are two editions of the deck, the limited and unlimited… My understanding is that the unlimited will eventually be available here, so you all will be able to get some whenever Pat receives his shipment for Tinker’s Packs
Learned about the kickstarter the day it launch from a comment here on the blog and again later that night at your reading/signing/Q&A at Heifer in Little Rock. Super glad I got to take part in several of the live streamings. The open hangouts with Shane and Erik were awesome as well. All of it culminated in me spending several hundred dollars pledging and even more buying both of the Cthulhu decks from the tinkers pack. So glad I did as I now see the limited edition Cthulhu deck is sold out. Can’t wait to get my decks signed someday. I might even wear my Doctor Who / Belle shirt again since it got your attention.
Thanks for everything you do so well Pat.
No! How did I not find out about this until today! I’m going to go cry in a corner for a while now. I’m so sad I missed out on this!
Hey Pat, love the entire card deck idea, I bought one limited and one unlimited, and now I would really like to have one of Taborlins Decks, is it too late to get it now that kickstarter is finished? or is it still possible to somehow add it to my pledge?
From what I understand they are using backerkit to manage the add-ons and it can allow for adding funds for additional add-ons. I’m not sure to what extent this is allowed, and if you weren’t a backer it would be useless to you, but I would say your chances are good.
okej, then I’m sure some kind of notification will alert us when it’s time to manage our add-ons.
Unfortunately for me I did not learn about this until today. Will these be on sale in December? Maybe a pre-order sale sometime before that? This is without a doubt the PERFECT gift for my wife for Christmas and I really am hating that I missed one on this.
Help me Rothfuss, you’re my only hope.
Sry for the question but is the release date already known?
for the third day i mean
Okay, in a video he said the book wouldn’t probably be in 2013 nor in 2015, so probably it will be in 2014. But here in Spain, we will have to wait like 9 months more…
gracias :) but the month ist not known? yes i think we have to wait 9 month too because i am german :( :D
Do you think we’ll have the cards by Sept 12th? I doubt it but… I’m meeting Jim Butcher at the WyrdCon convention in Costa Mesa and I want him to autograph my Ambrose card.
Unfortunately I missed this event :/
Anyway, I am very keen on getting my hands on this card deck, but I have no ideas where to find a place where they sell ’em or if they even are being sold. Is it possible to get some info regarding this?
