Name of the Wind Kickstarter: Final Days and the Coolest. News. Ever.

Honestly folks, I don’t even know where to begin today. I’ve got a lot of cool news to share about the Kickstarter.

And this is legitimately cool news. Not bullshit cool news that I just made up so I could pimp the project one last time before it closes in less than two days.

devi-colored

(Click to Embiggen Devi)

Because it *is* over in less than two days. Be warned.

Note: Please stay tuned to the end. Or skip directly down there. We have stunning news at the end of the blog.

  • We Crushed Everything

In the last blog I wrote about this project, I mentioned that if our Kickstarter hit 160K we would be the highest funded card-based Kickstarter ever.

The next day y’all stomped in to the tune of about 70,000 dollars, blowing past that goal and every other stretch goal we’d planned out.

In celebration, Shane drew a picture of me as a sort of great Krakken-bearded beast.

8bfc4f37d96d96c6fbd507a7959386a2_large

Because everyone loved it so much, we made the art available as magnet and t-shirt add-ons.

We currently stand at 440,000 dollars. Almost three times the previous record. The video of me singing will be forthcoming.

  • More Jots

I added 100 more jots to the kickstarter, doubling the previous levels.

I mention this early in the blog so those you can hopefully go and grab some before they’re all gone again.

Jot-ty1-02

Here’s a picture of the finished product, complete with the maker’s mark. Rest assured, more jots will be available in the future. Both in the Tinker’s Packs, and as a Worldbuilders fundraiser toward the end of the year.

  • Better Gaff Cards

Here’s the thing: all poker decks come with 2 gaff cards. They’re pretty useless. They usually have the rules for poker or some advertizement.

Shane and I came up with the idea of replacing them with something cool. We set stretch goals, then burned right through them….

So now we’re having:

1. A Lorren Gaff card that people can use as a bookmark. (Image forthcoming.)

2. A Willem Gaff card that you can use as a replacement card in your deck in case one of the cards is damaged.

All the Limited and Unlimited decks will have these Gaff cards included free.

We do this because we love you.

  • Signed Lorren Bookplates

Using the Lorren card art, Shane is going to make me a bookplate. My very first bookplate ever.

There’s only two ways of getting this bookplate.

1. You can add one to your order for five bucks. (Up to three.)

2. You get one for free if your order is $135 or more.

That’s it. Those are the only two ways to get them.

Would I love to include these bookplates with every order? Yes. But as it is, please understand that I’m going to be signing, like, 3000 of them. If I gave one away with every order, I’d be signing them for *days.*

That said, we have a stretch goal set at 450K. If we hit that, I’ll give one to everyone who buys in for 100 bucks or more.

  • Marked Cards

Or, as I like to think of it, the Taborlin deck.

I’ve always wanted a deck of marked cards. So I asked Shane if we could do one. And he said yes. And so we are…

You can add a marked deck to any Kickstarter pledge for 15 bucks. And they have a different back from the others.

tabback[3]

(I love the imagery here.)

Now here’s the thing: am I creating a deck of cards for cheaters?

No. I’m making a marked deck of cards. Because I think it’s cool.

Now you could use this deck of cards for evil if you wanted. But that’s your choice. You can use a screwdriver to kill someone if you wanted. That’s not necessarily what a screwdriver is for.

I like to think of this as the Taborlin deck because it will be *awesome* for card tricks.

Also, I’d get together with my friends and have a night of poker where everyone *tries* to cheat. Where it is effectively, *fair* to cheat. We would also probably drink whiskey and pretend to be cowboys of some sort.

Because I am seven years old inside, apparently.

In this deck, the gaff cards won’t be Wil and Lorren. They’ll contain the details of the marked-card cypher.

  • International shipping on the poker sets

Because several of you asked for this in the comments, we’ve added that as a special donation tier. (The rest of you can add the box sets as a simple add-on.)

541d706d0a2f5bc9a1ca85a7d8946817_large

The international shipping is expensive, but that’s because those high-quality clay chips are *heavy* and we’re going to be packaging them very, very carefully.

  • Guest appearances by Neil Gaiman and Felicia Day

Neil and Felicia graciously allowed us to use their likenesses for our two jokers: Elodin and Auri.

We listed these as stretch goals and met them less than a day later.

Reactions were divided. Some people made a vast ululating *squee* noise. Others said something along the lines of, “Boo! I want to see the *real* Auri and Elodin!”

So I just want to clarify things. We aren’t just going to draw Gaiman as Elodin, as if he were doing some sort of cosplay. That would be lame.

(Actually, that would be kinda awesome….)

But no. That’s not what’s going on here at all.

First off, the main reason Shane and I thought of Neil and Felicia is because they both possess certain characteristics we feel are very appropriate to Elodin and Auri.

Hell, I did an interview with Felicia on my blog back in 2008. Back before she was FELICIA DAY. While we were chatting, I asked which part she’d pick if she could play anyone in The Name of the Wind movie. She said, “My dream role would be Auri. I like playing damaged goods….”

And I thought, Yeah. I could totally see that. She has a whimsy about her that would be perfect….

Does that mean Auri is going to have red hair like Felicia? No. Obviously not. Auri will have Auri’s hair. But her expression and face will be influenced by Felicia’s because it works for the character.

It’s the same way we brought Jim Butcher in as everyone’s favorite Jackass:

amsam1

(God. I want to slap him so much….)

It doesn’t really look too much like Jim, but if you know it’s there, you can spot it.

Gaiman is a similar good fit for Elodin. Trust me about this. Neil and Felicia are perfect for my two wise fools.

  • Superhero Team-Up

Almost exactly 24 hours ago, I did a video conference with Shane and Erik, the folks behind Albino Dragon. We were going to plan our strategies for the final days of the kickstarter. Plan stretch goals. Talk strategy.

But before we could get into that, Shane said, “We’d like to give 5% of Albino Dragon to Worldbuilders.”

“Sorry?” I said.

“We’d like to give 5% of Albino Dragon to Worldbuilders.”

And then I just kinda sat there. I knew what he’d said, but I didn’t quite believe he’d said it.

So I asked. “Do you mean you’d like to give Worldbuilders a piece of the profit from this project? More than we already negotiated?”

No, he said. Then he explained again.

“Are you serious?” I asked.

Shane and Erik have built this company themselves with their time and energy, with their blood and sweat and money.

And they want to give a piece of it to Worldbuilders.

We couldn’t mention it on the kickstarter itself, of course. Because kickstarter projects can’t be directly associated with charities.

But yes, they were serious.

“And if we hit 500,000 before the end of the kickstarter,” Erik said. “We’d like to give you another 5%.”

It’s not often that I’m caught completely flat-footed and at a loss for words. But I was, I honestly was.

Eventually I kinda pulled myself together. “That’s really amazingly generous of you guys,” I said. “It’s amazingly kind of you. I’m so flattered, and I’m floored, and I’m stupefied. It’s one of the most ridiculously generous things anyone has ever offered me, and I don’t know how to respond.”

Then I paused and took a deep breath. “But maybe you want to think this over. Chat about it. Make sure it’s something you really want to do. We can talk about it some more tomorrow.”

And they kinda laughed at me. They explained that they’d already thought it over and talked about it. Which is why they were making me the offer now.

I nodded for a while kinda absentmindedly, getting my head together.

“If you let me tell this story on my blog,” I said. “Me and my people will blow the fucking roof off the last two days of this kickstarter. We will bring thunder and fury to your very door. We will shake the earth.”

They said they were okay with that.

So. Here is our 500K stretch goal.

500k

Now. Let’s be honest here. Are Shane and Erik being generous? Absolutely.

Are they being perfect, saintlike altruists? No. They’re clever folks. Really amazingly clever. Because with a single piece of outside-the-box thinking and startling generosity, they’ve brought me onto their team. I’m going to *so* many projects with them in the future. So many.

And you know what? I’m fine with that. Because they do awesome work.

This is the best sort of cleverness. The sort of cleverness where everyone is awesome, and everyone wins.

Now I’m not asking y’all to rush over and join the kickstarter. If you’ve already signed up, I’m not asking you to run over and increase your order.

But if you were thinking of picking up some of the new add-ons anyway…. Well, you can make that purchase knowing that an even larger portion of the money is going to a good cause.

And if you have a friend that loves NOTW, and you wanted to buy them an deck of cards as early Christmas present…. Well, you can rest assured that not only will that deck be as awesome as I can make it, but that the money is going directly to the artists. To the company they themselves own.

And if you wanted to twitter about this. Or talk about it on your blog. Or drop a link to this blog on facebook….

Well, I’d take that as a kindness. Because we have less than two days left.

And I’d really like to show Shane and Erik that they’ve made a good choice here.

Later space cowboys,

pat

P.S. If you have any questions about the kickstarter. You can ask them in the comments here. I’ll answer the ones I can. But tomorrow’s a busy day, and I’m flying out to Ohio for a convention.

So if some of the more kickstarter-savvy among you can help out with some answers too, I’d really appreciate it.

    Hi Pat,

The kickstarter is amazing and that it also will help worldbuilders is just awesome.
But I have a question concerning the international royal & nobel set added to the project today: why isn’t the signed limited card deck included in those pledges? If it would have been included I would have had no other choice than to up my pledge.

I hope the kickstarter crushes the 500k ;-)

    Greetings from Germany!

To further expand on what SimSla said, The international royal and noble sets were not available until just yesterday. The 100 signed limited decks were allocated long before then.

There are 5 signed decks remaining (2 in noble II and 3 in royal pledge levels). You could shoot an email to Erik and ask if special arrangements could be made to pay the difference for shipping.

I’ve added to mine. This is going to be a logistic nightmare with the add-on’s though. Either way, it’s a good cause, and your books helped me in a dark time so they/you/it are worth it.

Acutally Vince it won’t be AD is using backerkit to do the add-ons.
I’ve used it before with another card KS and it rocks! The process will be very easy and as such would make it easy for them to get the right items to everyone.
      Cheers!

Yeah. I used BackerKit when I ordered from Dwarven Forge in their kickstarter, and it was *very* easy to use. The interface is much better than Kickstarter’s, in all honesty.

Great news, Pat. I hope we’re able to crush the half mil goal. Kudos to Albino Dragon for this great idea.

Just to be clear. Are they giving 5% now and 5% more when we reach 500K, or will they only give some part of the company IF we reach 500K? Because the transcript indicates the former and the stretch card indicates the latter.

@battlequeen: There were only 100 of these decks and they’re all gone. I was lucky enough to grab one of the separate signed decks. :-)
@Vince: I can’t even begin to imagine the nightmare of handling those add-ons when the project ends (they have a couple of months to sort things out, though). I rounded up, just in case I made a mistake with the international shipping costs.

Out of curiosity, are the book plates going to be personalized’ or just autographed? Either is awesometastic of course. Just trying to get an idea of how much fan girl squeeing I should brace myself for when I give my friend the deck and bookplate (though it will quite possibly be lacking a Lorren gaff card because dammiti want that as a bookmark!)

Wow, I think this is all amazing, i wish i could spend lots of money on this cause. Aniway, i have a question. If i make a pledge of 31$ for example, the add ons that costs 30$ are included, or i would have to pledge another 30$?

    • Anech
      Posted June 12, 2013 at 8:45 AM | Permalink

If you pledge $31 and choose the $ 31 tier, then you will get, as it says, three different kind of decks (limited, unlimited, white rabbit). If you want anything else, you must add extra for the stuff you want (so in your case, if you want the $ 31 tier and an add on that costs $30, then add $31 (and shipping if needed))

I feel good about what I could do. And even if people were only able to donate the minimum for a deck of cards you should feel good too. Everyone helped create this. I hope we made Pat proud. (I am sure we did).

You’re absolutely right. This is 100% team effort.

And I’d never want people jumping in for more than they’re comfortable with, or more than they can afford. A person who buys a deck, is helping just as much as someone who can afford to buy a set of chips.

I’m probably exhibiting signs of my age here, but I can’t find the info on adding a jot or two to my pledge. Are they gone? The text under the Jot Add-On seems to continue under the “Unlocked” type, so instructions might be there.

    $500,000, I see you!

There is no way to buy one of the pro-type jots as an add-on. You can only get them as part of one of the pledge levels. I’m shameless cutting and pasting the info below from another post:

From Pat’s original blog post about the Jots:

      https://blog.patrickrothfuss.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DSCN1167.jpg

“This, my friends, is a jot. A copper jot.

I’ve been working with a gentleman numismatist named Tom Maringer to develop the coinage in my world. Because I am a complete geek for coins.

This is one of our prototype jots. It’s not the sort of jot Kvothe would use though. Not quite. This is a jot that would have existed in the Four Corners several hundred years ago.

Tom and I are going to do several limited batches of jots, refining the design until it’s the same counterfeit-proof coin that exists in Kvothe’s world.

We’re only going to make 1000 of this version of the jot, and Tom has graciously agreed to let me add 100 of them to the card Kickstarter. So right now you can be one of the first folks to get one. But only if you jump onboard and before they sell out.

We just added these jots to the Kickstarter tonight, so y’all have a decent chance of heading over and grabbing some. But they *are* going to sell out fast.

I’m sorry for that. Rest assured you will be able to buy these jots later. But probably not online for at least another couple months….”

Thanks, Milkus. Here’s my point of confusion: The levels at which jots are available are full. I am happy to upgrade my pledge to a “jot” level, but don’t see how to do that. Does that make sense? If not, I’ll just let it rest and buy one later.

The $460 (Tinker’s pack and a jot) pledge is the only remaining pledge with jots. All the others have been sold out.

So you still can, but it’s not cheap. :-)

There is a 5$ bookplate add on, which means you will just add 5 to your pledge, and when the kickstarter is over, they will ask you what it is for

    • Posted June 12, 2013 at 2:28 PM | Permalink

My understanding is that they will contact you to ask you what the extra $ is for, and then you reply back and tell them it’s for the bookplate. (or whatever) You’re not alone in being confused – this project started with 1 item, and now has nearly 25, plus 15+ art prints. All within 5 weeks! =)

I tried to order the limited deck while it was still one left, and I was really happy it was still one there because I really really wanted it. But then, when I was about to finish the order and pay for it did I get a message telling me that it was no one left.
And now I’m really disappointed and sad. I was in the middle of ordering an paying and someone else could still take it?

I know it was stupid to wait until the very very end, but I had to ask my parents to help me order, and I was really scared to do so because they just haver expensive shoes and stuff. Didn’t want to ask for more.

Anyway, I ordered to unlimited instead, but is there still some kid of way to get a limited one? Please? Pretty please? I can make you a pretty drawing and mail to you as a thank you.

Way to go Pat. This is great for everyone involved. Thanks for explaining the who’s and why’s. I love your work. I have followed you since I read about the ” writers of the future” . I was buying you first book on kindle, then went to store to buy the hard back, as soon as it came out. (which was lost in a fire, sad, not going there…).
Then book 2 as soon as it was out in both hardback and kindle.
I also love Shane’s art and seeing him bringing the story to life….
    There are no words.
Your bringing in an amazing amount to your charity and that is a great deed, you should feel all warm and fuzzy.

If I could make a suggestion for the next project: leather-bound, collector’s editions of Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear. Embossed, leather covers and maybe some add-on full-color art prints of scenes from the novel. Maybe a series of numbered and/or signed at additional cost.

I would seriously love to put these right next to my leather-bound LOTR set (and it’d also help me take care of my Christmas present for my little brother NEXT year, since the limited cards and some prints are handling THIS year)

I know I’m joining the conversation a little late, but I just saw the Kvothe (Kote, I suppose) artwork on the Kickstarter site… and I couldn’t but stare at it and be a little melancholy for a minute. Pat, if you talk to the artists in the near future, and actually read this (you’re busy being you [something we’re all grateful for, if I may speak for the group]), please thank them for that moment, from me.

So I thought I was going to get away cheaply on this one…Ha! I joined the Kickstarter at the beginning, but then they had to go and add on all these great things! So I upped my pledge. I even convinced a friend who has never read the books to join based solely on the artwork, and now she’s reading NOTW (finally). I will probably never use these beautiful cards to actually play cards, since I wouldn’t want people to smudge them, or even touch them, but maybe I’ll have a framed set of playing cards in my house in a few months. Is that weird?

My birthday is this 25. I had to order a book for amazon (Temeraire, not bad), and I was lazy about doing that, because in Amazon there is always a problem. Today I was going to buy the book, and because I’ve never waited some thing more than The Kingkiller Chronicles (I’m serious here, every day and in every moment I think about Kvothe my heart hurts a little like demanding “get the fucking book”, so pardon me if sometimes I’m a little I want the book now) I went to your blog (a routine I do 3 times aproximately per day).
I had read this blog, but I went to the kickstarter. Why?, I’m not going to buy anything, I thought. I, for a joke, went to add money, to see what they could offer. And 2 minutes later I bought 1 limited deck and 1 unlimited deck, jajaja
Truly, when I went to the page, I wasn’t thinking to buy anything. When I wnet to add money here, I wasn’t thinking to buy anything. When I saw all the offers I wasn’t. When I saw the 28 money deck, then, only then, It was a ¡BOOM!, and now I’m almost trembling with desire).
Thank you for creating waht I think it’s the best fantasy book wrote in, at least 20 years, and I hope it becomes a classic.

My math skills are crap, but I have tried to figure out how many limited edition decks there will be and I came up with something like 20,000? Am I over estimating this?

Also, I hope there will be enough bookplates for everyone who adds $5. Will it be a first come first served sort of thing, where whoever gets their email in first gets first pick? Otherwise, Pat, you are gonna have major hand cramps for days!

PS: So, when the 3rd book comes out, by then I will probably have the second Princess and Mr. Whiffle, and my playing cards for you to sign when you come to Orange County! If you take too long, there may even be WMF playing cards……

    Posted June 13, 2013 at 11:33 AM | Permalink

As long as you only have one kickstarter account, I believe that the most recent is the only one that will be charged… In order to get add ons, all you need to do is manage your pledge by adding the required amount of money, and afterwards, Albino Dragon will ask what you want to do with the extra money via Backerkit

  52. HighFlyingSparky
    Posted June 13, 2013 at 12:54 PM | Permalink

Speaking of the logistical nightmare that calculating all those add-ons could be… I’m a math/science geek myself, and I know there are more of us on here. Is there a way we could come up with the formula or some programming to help Albino Dragon troll through the kickstarter accounts? The initial form email should be easy enough, but is there a module the email could contain (very basic format, so anyone could use it regardless of platform) so that when the responses start pouring in, Albino Dragon just has to run the module inputs through to spit out the list of how many of add-on X goes to contributor Y? I was looking through the numbers and yow… Sum(x*N) where N=0 to inifinity [theoretically] and x = each of the 55 available add-ons (not counting combination possibilities) for each of nearly 11,000 people. I’m not smart enough to do this, but I think we could work on it in concert with others. Anyone? Bueller?

Another kickstarter I pledged to uses Backerkit (www.backerkit.com). They send out an email to all the backers, you go and fill out a form online, and it does it all for them. Also confirms your shipping address. Might be something to consider, though I don’t know if they charge or anything.

Between the Kickstarter, the conventions and all the other side projects, how much time do you dedicate to writing book 3? The cards look awesome by the way.

P.s thinking about using The King Killer Chronicles as a three part novel study for my students in the future, think I’d be able to pull it off with any grade other than grade 12?

    • bibliophile785
      Posted June 14, 2013 at 7:02 AM | Permalink

Just my two cents, of course, but I suspect that you’d be able to take grades from 10-12 through a novel study project with this series. Once the third book comes out, I have not the slightest doubt that a lot of the unexplained foreshadowing and still-loose-ends will be made clear and tidied up. That should mean, besides the story being exciting and enticing and utterly enthralling, and the words themselves vibrant and poetic (lyrical? I’d hate to use the word “poetic” to describe Kote’s narrative without qualifying it), that all the fascinating world-building and literary devices that move the plot will be ripe for study.

Super glad I got to take part in several of the live streamings. The open hangouts with Shane and Erik were awesome as well. All of it culminated in me spending several hundred dollars pledging and even more buying both of the Cthulhu decks from the tinkers pack. So glad I did as I now see the limited edition Cthulhu deck is sold out. Can’t wait to get my decks signed someday. I might even wear my Doctor Who / Belle shirt again since it got your attention.
