Worldbuilders Stretch Goal: Book 3 Q&A.

Hey there everybody,

As many of you know, one of the final stretch goals for Worldbuilders was a book three Q&A.

Generally speaking, I avoid talking about book three for the simple reason that when I do, a disproportionate number of people start whining at me about how it isn’t out yet. Shockingly, that’s not something I particularly enjoy. Hence my silence.

The other problem is that I’ve answered people’s questions about book three in the past. Done interviews and written blog posts. And you know what happens? Two days later people ask me the very same questions. The result is that I end up irritated, exasperated, and feeling like the whole thing was a waste of time.

So again. Silence.

Still, people *have* been asking for some time. So I was happy to offer it up as incentive to help Worldbuilders hit $2 million in donations.

Scheduling was difficult after the fundraiser, as I had a few unexpected trips to LA this month to talk about Hollywood stuff. But now we have a date for the Q&A: Friday, February 3rd from 3pm to 5pm Central Time, live on my Twitch channel.

(If you head over there now, follow the channel, and set notifications to “on” you’ll get an e-mail when my streams go live.)

Pat Streaming(Actual Footage)

If you have a Twitch account, you’ll be able to participate in the chat. If not, you can submit questions via the form below.

(If you want to share the link to the form elsewhere feel free, the link is right here)

I’ll take questions from the chat as well, but if our turnout is good the chat will be lively, and there’s a fair chance that your question will scroll off the screen before I can see it. And yes, we’ll be putting the chat in slow mode so you people can’t spam your question over and over. So if you *really* want your question answered, your best bet is to fill out the form.

Now, for those of you who have never done a live Q&A with me before, someone at PAX South recently suggested that my Q&A’s should more appropriately be called “Questions and Anecdotes.”

This is very true. People ask questions, and I tell a story. It’s usually somewhat related, but by the time I’m done telling it it’s possible I won’t remember what the original question was. The same will likely be true for this Q&A.

A few facts about the Q&A:

  • I will be accepting questions on other subjects, too.

Like some of the Hollywood stuff that’s been going on. I know everyone’s curious about that.

That said, I’ll be giving questions about book three, the revision process, etc, priority.

  • It will be spoiler-free. (In regard to book three.)

I’m not going to be spilling any secrets about what’s coming up. Anyone who knows anything about me knows better than that.

  • The twitch chat might NOT be spoiler free.

The questions and comments people ask in there might contain information about the first two books. Not to mention speculation about upcoming books. So if you’re vehemently anti-spoiler, you might want to just watch the video and skip the chat.

  • There is no release date yet.

If there were, I would already have told you. Serious people. Why would I sit on that news?

So yeah. Submit your questions and tune in for the show. I plan on drinking a bunch of coffee beforehand, so it should be a good time.

See you soon,

pat

Book three is great and all, but as of the here and now, I’m more excited to see what Viari is doing next! And what exciting new adventure will cause people to die as Acquisition Inc. benefits!

Will this be made available on YouTube to be watched after the livestream is over? For those of us unable to attend the livestream event.

I can’t answer that, but I can tell you Twitch archives the VODs of every livestream and it’s available as soon as it ends.

It’ll go up on the Twitch VOD (right here) and be there for a couple of weeks (with the chatroom visible on the side in time with the video), but we will DEFINITELY be putting this up on the Worldbuilders YouTube page soon as well.

Silly question perhaps, but will the video be available afterwards? I’ve got a protest Friday at a similar time.

Third comment I reply saying the same thing, sorry about that.

I can usually get away with texting during work meetings, but watching a two hour video would be a liiiiiitle suspect. So. I’m willing to spend good Cealdish coin on someone who posts a transcript of the video. Like, maybe a copper jot.*

Thanks! I’ve tried watching Twitch streams in the past and they’re just not for me. I prefer to read all the things. ????

Good luck, Pat. This is a thing that is clearly unpleasant for you, that many fans want, that you’re going through with for charity.

**I would humbly recommend compiling a short list and a long list of typical questions and answers, especially if hearing repeat questions is a trying experience.

Hell, I’d have been happy with a stretch goal that was just “Pat tells anecdotes,” so that’s definitely a feature, not a bug.

“When you wait a few span or month to hear a finished song, the anticipation adds savor. But after a year excitement begins to sour.” Really like this line in the first book and the bit about hard words with people to close. Seems relevant

Touché, golflife, touché…Can you call this series a trilogy? Seems un-lethanti to do so.

Thank you Pat and Amanda: Pat for a fun, much appreciated Q&A, Amanda for filtering the questions.

However, there is something I feel I should point out for the anniversary edition.

Pat said that the word “bint” is racial and will be removed. It isn’t. It is, however, used in a deragatory manner in some parts of the UK towards women. (In other areas, such as Birmingham, it’s used, weirdly, as a pet name.)

But it really just means girl or daughter in the original Arabic; my dad will always say “binti” when referring to my sister. British soldiers (yay colonialism) appropriated the term (like how the words “fatwa” and “sharia” are appropriated in the modern day) into its current meaning. In the Levant, where I’m from, it can also mean “woman” in certain contexts.

Which is why I always thought “silly bint” was a weird phrase for Temerant.

(Source: am a British Arab with a deep interest in my own history and native in both languages.)

Remove it, by all means, but I thought I’d point tbat out.

This is in response to you saying “what is the larger effect of my book on the world and on the minds of the people who take the time to consume it? … Am I contributing in a positive way to the overall collective consciousness of people in the world”
My mom often says to me that she doesn’t understand where I get certain behaviors or morals. This isn’t because my mom is a bad person, or she raised me to be a bad or selfish person. But we both grew up in circumstances where if something happens that might make things easier on you; you take it. So when I do a small thing, where it would be just as easy to do (what I would consider) the wrong thing with minimal consequences I do the right thing. I often tell her that I didn’t get it from her, I got it from reading fantasy. That’s partially a joke. My parents taught me to do what’s right, however some of the finer shading of what is right to me HAS come from reading about little people doing little things and eventually becoming heroes.
You have a story about a “nobody” who is trying so hard to do what’s right. But you take it a step further and make him more relatable. Kvothe isn’t perfect. He wants things. Sometimes he’s selfish. He’s beyond arrogant, and he makes mistakes. But at the end of the day he tries to do good. These stories matter. They build upon each other and teach kids to grow up and be heroes in their own ways. You just also happen to include some cautionary tales with your hero. So keep telling us your stories with the confidence that they’re slowly making a difference. Take the time to tell your boys stories and forget about the entitled people who feel that you should sacrifice yourself for your art (they clearly don’t know how art works and aren’t deserving of your mental energy)

    TL;DR Thanks for everything
PS Amanday you were awesome and I want you to be my friend >^.^<

    Hi Pat,

One thing you mentioned on the stream was that there is a forum full of questions and answers for translators.

Would you ever consider publishing that forum?

This would of course have to happen after book 3 is out so that there would be no spoilers – but I think it could make an interesting read – especially if you picked the threads that had the most back and forth, or the most views.

    Thanks!
