Upcoming Events: Madison, Amarillo, and GenCon

Hey there everybody,

This year, I’ve been making a point of cutting down on convention travel a bit. (Already so far I’ve passed on Emerald City and PAX East and Phoenix comic-con, all of which I hit last year and really enjoyed.) Part of this is to make room in my schedule for the inevitable trips to LA, because of Kingkiller adaptation stuff. But I’m also trying to cut down on conventions so I can get more work done, and try get my life back into some semblance of order.

That said, I have some events coming up soon, specificially:

  • July 20: Madison, Wisconsin

Lots of you probably know Kevin Hearne. He’s been a friend, colleague, and frequent contributor to Worldbuilders for ages now.

He released the latest book in the Iron Druid Chronicles series last week, and in the process of touring all over the place, he’s swinging by my hometown: Madison. And invited me to be part of his event.

So the two of us will be at the Madison Central Library at 7:00. We’ll be talking, reading, answering questions, telling stories, and just generally having a good time with the audience. Afterwards, we’ll be signing books.

I’m really looking forward to this, as I haven’t done an event in Madison for a while, to say nothing of the fact that Kevin is delightful, and it will be nice to do something like this with a partner, which isn’t something I’ve done much of before.

What’s more, Kevin has teamed up with The Tinker’s Packs to produce and sell merchandise based on his books.

Since we have all of this cool stuff, and because Madison is close to home for the Worldbuilders crew, we’re going to have these things available for sale at the signing (in addition to the books provided by A Room of One’s Own bookstore). There’ll also be some of my merch there, like Tak, window clings, Pinny pins, and the scents based off of characters from my books.

Here’s all of the info to get you to the event:

  • August 5: Amarillo, Texas

In a couple weeks I’ll be spending the day at AMA-Con, the pop-culture con run by the Amarillo Public Library.

I’ve not been shy about my love for libraries, and the fact that this group has been running a cool local convention for so many years warms my bitter old heart.

Here’s my full schedule for the day:

12:00-1:00 PM: Autograph Signing
1:30-2:30 PM: Speech with Q&A
3:00-4:30 PM: Writing Panel
5:00-6:00 PM: Autograph Signing

I’ll update with room numbers once I have them, but it’s worth noting that it’s a 2-day con, and even if all of my stuff is on day one, you should consider swinging by and checking it out for the full event. Tickets are $5 for one day, or $8 for both, which is straight-up CRAZY cheap. So if you’re in the neighbourhood, there’s really no reason not to stop by….

  • August 17-20: GenCon in Indianapolis, Indiana

GenCon is one of my favorite cons. In fact, it’s the *only* convention I ever went to back when I was a kid.

This year is special for a couple reasons. especially since it’s the 50th year.

As you may have heard, this year’s True Dungeon adventures are a teamup with me, so everyone who plays will get to play in my world, even potentially meeting up with some characters from the books.

If that sounds like fun, there are two different adventures you can play, and over 800 opportunities to do so, but tickets go quickly, so check them out over here: http://bit.ly/2r0ncEu

Here’s everything I’m doing at the con far…

Thursday, August 17

12pm-2pm: Signing in the Exhibit Hall. Tickets are required, and unfortunately they’re all gone.

5pm-7pm: An Evening with Pat Rothfuss, Ballroom (tickets encouraged, since those with tickets will be let in first): https://www.gencon.com/events/121259

7pm-8pm: Writer’s Craft: How to Find Your Voice, Capital 1. Tickets available here.

Friday, August 18

10am-11am: Writer’s Craft: Getting it Right–The Role of Research, Capital 1. Tickets available here.

1pm-5pm: Worldbuilders Party Fundraiser, Tickets available here.

This is a fundraising party for Worldbuilders where you can buy tickets to play games with all sorts of awesome people. We’ve tried out parties like this at Emerald City Comic Con, and they were awesome, so we’ve extended them to GenCon too.

I’ll be playing King of Tokyo with 7 other people, but I’m not the only one you can play with. You can play games like Citadels, Exploding Kittens, Lords of Waterdeep, and Mysterium with awesome folks. There aren’t a ton of tickets left, so be sure to read up and see if you’re game.

The full guest list is visible at the Worldbuilders Party website, and you can buy tickets for the fundraiser on the GenCon website right here.

Saturday, August 19

12pm-1pm: Writer’s Craft, Resolving Tension while Holding Interest, Capital 1

2pm-4pm: Signing in the Exhibit Hall. Ticketed event.

*New* 8pm-9pm: Adapting Characters into Art with Echo Chernik, Capital 1. Tickets available here.

I’ll also be around and about at the con itself, visiting the Worldbuilders Booth (number 368, directly across from Badali Jewelry Specialties), swinging by the Tak Tournament, and just generally amusing myself and having a good time.

Right now it’s looking like the tickets for the signings are going fast. So I’m going to see if we can do something about that. Stay tuned here for details…

* * * *

There you have it folks. It’s gonna be a busy couple of weeks, and there’s more in store that we haven’t even talked about yet.

I’ll be announcing my other convention appearances here soon, along with details about my upcoming signing tour.

So stay tuned,

pat

Ah, slight correction–Kevin Hearne is promoting his Iron Druid short story collection, Besieged–the “last book” for his series, Scourged, won’t be out till next April. Unless you meant “latest” book, in which case, never mind! :)

!!! I’m going to be in America (from Australia) throughout August and early September. Fingers crossed our paths cross – I’ll bring a copy of your book just in case :)

    Hey Pat,
Stoked you’re coming down to Madison tomorrow, I’m going to try to make it out for the event. I’m also really excited for True Dungeon and the WB party at my FIRST GenCon! You rock man, and I know I’m far from alone in saying how great it is to see you out and about enjoying life and still putting on great events like this for fans. I can imagine having random fans be proprietary about your time and attention is quite hard and occasionally disheartening. On behalf of all of us thanks again for being awesome! Drop me a line if you want to play a game of Tak or something while you’re in Madison.

    Cheers –
    Chris

hi Pat, any chance you’d do little events for fans during your LA visits or were they just going to be business trips? No pressure, just curious. I’d brave the 405 fwy for any event you held. :)

My tired post-work eyes read “Signing in the Exhibit Hall” as “Singing in the Exhibit Hall”. Can we adjust reality to make that happen?

    • Posted July 19, 2017 at 4:49 PM | Permalink

It’s more than likely that I’ll do some singing in my “Evening with Pat Rothfuss” event.

Yes! I was there for that last year and it was amazing.

I just need to not think of how much busier GenCon will be this year and everything will be great.

I really hope you come back to PAX West this year! If not, we’d love to have you back at the church near the University Bookstore in Seattle again. Meeting you in that small venue was such a treat.

Thanks for coming to Amarillo, Pat. I’m really looking forward to it.

    Great to hear an update!

Work is great and all but make sure to take some time and do what YOU want to do. If you’re not living life the way you want, make it happen.

    Hi, Pat.

I was fortunate enough to make it to the Madison Public Library to see you and Kevin Hearne. I really enjoyed the format of the event and appreciate the effort you both put in to give it a conversational and intimate feel. One of the highlights had to have been Kevin’s unintentional zinger when he was asked about advice for aspiring authors. ?

Thanks for putting yourself out there and sharing with the rest of us.

    Best,

    Roland

Oh you lucky, lucky people to get to go to Pat-filled events.

I was an Arbitrary Day Reddit Gift Exchange participant this year and got Citadels and Saboteur as gifts! They are both amazing games and I highly recommend them. If you get to play Citadels with Pay come back and let us know how it went, please?

Of course I meant Pat, not Pay as my phone decided to change things at whim.

If you have the time and energy I’d be stoked if you stopped at a bookstore while in LA. And if you can’t squeeze it in but are looking for a great used bookstore, check out The Iliad.

    Hey Pat!

I was curious if there is any update on the signing situation for Gencon. I didn’t know tickets would be required until I saw your post, and by then they were all gone. I was curious if there would be any other opportunities. Thanks. :)
