New Interviews

In my last blog I mentioned I was going to be doing a signing  in Columbus at the end of the month. Afterwards, more than a few people asked if the timing of my visit was a freakish coincidence, or if I was going to be a guest at Origins.

(For those of you who don’t know, Origins is a big gaming convention that’s going on that weekend in Columbus.)

The answer to this question is both yes and no. I am going to be there, but I’m mostly going to be ghosting the convention. Not in the traditional sense, I plan on getting a badge and everything. But I’m not going as an official guest like Felicia Day and Will Wheaton are going to be.

I might do a panel or two if they have an empty seat and want me to pontificate on one thing or another, but mostly I plan on bumming around and talking to people. See what new games are coming out. Maybe rub some elbows. Maybe see if anyone would be interested in doing a board game set in the Four Corners world….

It’s rare that I go to a convention where I’m not being all officially authorious. Usually I’m booked pretty tight with signings and talkings. Since I’m ghosting this one, maybe I’ll play a few games instead. If I’m feeling exceptionally energetic, I might even see if they have a spot open in one of the LARPs.

Yeah. I’ll admit it. I’ve LARPed in the past.

(You can embiggen this. But you probably shouldn’t)

Okay. Fine. I can’t blame that photo on a LARP. I was just dicking around. And that’s mostly what I’ll be doing at Origins, dicking around.

Maybe I’ll see if I can find another catgirl hat, then I’ll stalk Wil Wheaton, then at an opportune moment, I’ll put it on, and rush toward him, arms outstretched, uttering my loudest profundo basso, “SQEEEEEE!”

Yeah. I think I’m going to have a good time.

And if I find out that I am doing any particular panels ahead of time, I’ll come back to this blog and post the details on them right here.

(Placeholder for potential details.)

  • Anyway, on to business. Today we have some new interviews:

This first one is by my UK publisher, Gollancz. It’s a brief interview they’re using to draw a little attention to the fact that I’ve been shortlisted for the David Gemmel Award this year. (Voting ends May 31st).

Fair warning, this one’s kinda short, and I was realllly punchy when I answered their questions. Really punchy.

The second interview was a little different for me. It was done by a woman who normally runs a fashion blog. So a few of the questions ended up being a little different than what I’m normally asked.  I think I might have horrified them a little when I told them I only own one pair of pants.

That’s all for now, folks. Share and enjoy.

Columbus Ohio and A New Edition to the Family

Okay. First and foremost, I should mention a reading/signing that I have thrown together in true spur-of-the-moment Rothfuss fashion.

On May 31st, at 7:00, I’m going to be in Columbus Ohio.

Here are the salient details.

May 31, 2012 at 7:00 PM
Reading, Q&A, and Signing
Barnes and Noble The Ohio State University Book Store
1598 N. High Street
Columbus, OH 43201
Facebook Event

I haven’t had much time to spread the word about this one, so if you know someone in the area who’d be interested, I’d take it as a kindness if you tipped them off. I don’t know when I’ll be back in the area.

In other news, look what’s happening this week in China:

(Click to Embiggen)

The Name of the Wind is coming out there this week. I haven’t actually seen the physical copies of the book yet, but they did send me these pictures.

They broke it into two volumes because of the length, but as I understand it, they’re selling them together. So there won’t be a wait between volume one and volume two.

Aren’t the covers gorgeous? They make me feel much classier than usual.

Upcoming events

Things continue to be busy over here in Rothfusia, what with wrapping up the fundraiser, training the new assistants, and all the maniacal laughter, there just don’t seem to be enough hours in the day.

Oh yeah, and the writing. That thing I need to do to make money and live. That takes a little bit of time, too.

This is just a quick blog to let you know of a few things happening in these next couple weeks that you might want to tune in for….

This upcoming Sunday (April 1st.) Felicia Day is going to be doing twelve straight hours of live video hangout over on Google+ as a way to spread the word about the upcoming launch of Geek and Sundry.

I’m going to be helping out with one of those hours by getting together with authors John Scalzi, Amber Benson, and Felicia herself to discuss what makes for good characters. I expect the conversation to wander pretty far afield. My plan is to drink about twelve shots of espresso before we go live, and then just see what happens.

That will be happening from 2:00-3:00 PM California time. (4:00-5:00 here in Wisconsin.)

If you’d like to see the full schedule for Felicia’s 12 hour carnival of delights, you can find that over here.

If you want to watch the hangout, you can either catch it live on Google+ or you can catch it on the Geek & Sundry Youtube channel.

It should be a good time. You should come check it out.

In other news, I’ll be hitting the Fox Valley Book Festival on April 12th (more detailed information is up there in the Tour Schedule tab.) I’ll be reading, answering questions, and signing books. Y’know, the usual.

So if you live in that neck of the woods, you should stop by, because I don’t know when I’ll be passing through again.

Lastly, we’ll be fielding questions from the audience on Sunday’s live hangout, so if you have something you’re curious about, you can post the question below in the comments. I’ll do my best to bring your questions, comments, and smart-ass remarks into the discussion if we’ve got the time….

See you soon,

pat

Upcoming appearances and some Interviews

Okay. First and foremost, I have a couple of readings/signings/Q&A things coming up in these next couple weeks.

One of them is right here in Stevens Point at my local independent bookstore, Bookfinders. It’s on Friday, Feb 24th, at 7:00. I’ve also heard that one of the cool local coffee shops will be providing treats for the event. So even if you don’t care about hearing me read some of my newer stuff… y’know… treats.

The other event that’s rapidly approaching is in Virginia. Specifically, I’ll be in Blacksburg.

Here. Let’s just do it like this:

STEVENS POINT, WI
February 24th at 6:30 PM
Reading and Signing at Bookfinders
1001 Brilowski
Stevens Point, WI 54481
Facebook Event

BLACKSBURG, VA
February 29th at 7:00 PM

Virginia Bioinformatics Institute Conference Center
BLACKSBURG, VA 24061
Facebook Event

HIGH POINT, NC
March 2-4, 2012
Literary Guest of Honor for StellarCon 36
Best Western High Point
135 South Main St
High Point, NC 27260
Facebook Event

I don’t get down into that corner of the world very often, so if you’re interested in seeing me and maybe getting a book signed, you should catch me when I’m in the area.

As always, you can get details about my upcoming appearances on the Tour Page. I’ll be updating it with this summer’s conventions pretty soon, too.

Lastly, for those of you who enjoy hearing me ramble about one thing and another, we have a couple interviews from a while back. I didn’t get a chance to post them when they happened because we were in the thick of Worldbuilders.

Here’s a podcasty one with Adventures in Sci-fi Publishing.

And a texy one with NeuFutur.

Share and Enjoy,

Justice

So Worldbuilders wrapped up yesterday. While we still have a lot of work to do, assigning and shipping out prizes over the next couple weeks,  there was a general sense of exhausted triumph in the air.

I won’t lie to you, it’s a lot of work making worldbuilders happen. It’s exhausting at times. But y’all made things worth it by stepping up and helping us raise more than I’d ever thought possible this year. I’ll do an official recap about the whole experience in just a couple of days.

Anyway, since Worldbuilders was done on the 7th, I celebrated by reporting for jury duty on the 8th.

I’ve never been called for jury duty before, and while I’m busy these days, I’ll admit that I was looking forward to it. For those of you who haven’t guessed, curiosity is one of my driving forces, and I really wanted to see what a jury trial was like. I’ve never seen any sort of trial, actually. I probably know more about the Renaissance legal system than the current one here in the US.

So no matter what happened, it was going to be news to me. So I got up at the ungodly hour of 7:30 so I could be at the courthouse at 8:00.

The first thing that I learned is that not all juries have 12 people in them. You can have a 6 person jury too. That’s the sort of jury they were going to use for this case.

What happens is this: They pick a bunch of jurors at random from a pool. Then those people have to show up at the courthouse. From that pool of potential jurors, they chose 12 of us, knowing that they’re going to pare that down to 6.

My name was the second name picked. So the second thing I learned is that the chairs in the jury box are really comfy.

Next they ask you questions to make sure that you can be a good juror. These were fairly straightforward. Do you know the plaintiff? Do you know either of the lawyers? Have any of you ever been to court? If so, do you think you were treated fairly?

They didn’t ask us these individually. They asked us as a group. It was rather casual, actually.

When the defense lawyer asked, “Is everyone here familiar with a person’s right to defend himself?” Everyone kinda nodded along.

(I’m paraphrasing here, the quotes are meant to indicate dialogue, not a verbatim transcript of the exact words said.)

I raised my hand and said, “I’m familiar with the *concept* of a person’s right to defend themselves,” I said. “In general moral terms. But I don’t know anything about a person’s *legal* right to defend themselves.”

The defense lawyer nodded and said, “That’s an important distinction.”

Then the other lawyer said to the judge, “Can we have a sidebar on this issue?”

The judge agreed.

The third thing I learned is that having a sidebar is when the lawers go up and talk to the judge privately.

That was pretty much it for the questions. They lawyers got to take turns crossing off members of the jury. It’s like the reverse of getting picked to be on someone’s team. You don’t get picked, you get un-picked.

I got unpicked.

I will admit, I felt a little snubbed. A little disappointed. I was looking forward to seeing the trial and doing my thing as a responsible citizen, being a vital part of the legal system.

I tried not to take it personally, either. I know that they had to cut 6 of us anyway. Statistically, it was a 50/50 shot.

And honestly, if I were a lawyer, I probably wouldn’t want me on a jury. Not only do I look like a hobo, but I overthink and tend to ask questions like, “What you you mean when you use the word ‘mean’?”

Nobody wants to deal with that. Nobody wants to be a part of the Stevens Point amateur production of “Six Angry Men.”

All in all, I was out of the courthouse by 9:15. And since I had my day free, I went and had pancakes.

So you see, the story had a happy ending.

Also, for those of you in the area, I’m going to be doing a reading/signing/Q&A in Wisconsin Rapids tonight at 7:00. I think I’m going to be reading a piece of the new novella, just to see how it sounds out loud…

Details, as always, are on the tour page

Upcoming Events in Reno and the UP

I hate posting updates while I’m away from my home computer.

I’m up in the north woods right now, a lovely place, isolated. Great for a little family vacation. It’s the sort of place where you can only get cell phone reception if all the local bears are standing in the right places so the radio waves reflect the signal in the right way.

But it’s hell on internet, too. Not only do I have to leave behind my lovely clicky keyboard behind, but I have to use a borrowed computer. Last night I typed up a post three separate times, only to have my dad’s computer erase it, rather than saving it.

This I do not love.

Anyway, I’m at the local library right now, and I’m posting to let y’all know about some reading and signings that are coming up in the next couple weeks.

*     *     *

Note: This first event is in less than a week. Tell your friends….

Next week I’ll be in Reno for Worldcon. (My schedule for the convention is posted on the events page and on facebook.)

But since I’m going to be in the area for the first time, I thought I’d do a signing for people who live nearby but are unable to attend Worldcon.

So Sundance Books & Music is hosting the event which will be held next door at the Nevada Museum of Art. I’ll be doing my standard reading, Q&A and signing. The store will be selling my books and you can contact them at 775-786-1188 or on their website or facebook. I’ve put up a facebook event as well if you’re interested.

[Edit: Because the theater we’re having the reading in only has about 200 seats, the bookstore is suggesting that you call ahead and reserve your place. That way you can be sure to have a seat waiting for you when show up.]

The last weekend of August, I’ll be doing an “Author vs. Author” event at McLean & Eakin Booksellers with Ernie Cline, whose first book, Ready Player One, is coming out on the 16th.

It’s Awesome. How Awesome?

Since I was going to be driving through the UP on my way back from Petosky, I thought I should take the time do do a signing. Luckily, the lovely people at Snowbound Books were willing to accommodate me.

I’ll be doing my typical reading/Q&A/and signing. Hardcovers of NOTW and WMF with be available at the store, as well as copies of The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle. I’ll also have copies of the promotional sticker with me.

For more info, or to reserve a copy of the book, call: 906-228-4448.

That’s all for now, folks. Sorry the post isn’t prettier and wittier, but the library is about to close.

New post on Monday.

Future Readings and Conventions Past….

So a long time ago, just a couple weeks after my first book came out, I received my first-ever professional convention invite. The convention was called Fantasy Matters, and it was there that I first met Neil Gaiman.

Fast forward to now, the same people that ran the Fantasy Matters convention just started up their own website, and they asked me if I’d write something to help with the launch. So I wrote a little something that talked about attending their convention back in the day. It was one of the very first that I attended as a professional writer, and meeting Neil Gaiman at that point in my life had a bit of an impact on me.

Here’s a link, if you’re interested in reading it…

In other news, I’m going to be doing a reading, Q&A, and signing up in Rhinelander on the 27th.

This should be a fun event for a couple reasons:

1) It should be cozy. (By which I mean there will probably be less than 400 people there.) That means I’ll have more time to hang out and personalize books for people.

2) Since the second book has been out for a couple months now, I can finally answer questions about it during the Q&A, and maybe read a piece of it, too. I couldn’t do that during my tour for fear of spoilers.

3) We’ve got a nice venue in an auditorium. So everyone can have a seat, even if we get 150 people or so. It’s flattering when so many people show up to an event that it’s standing room only, but I feel bad for the people that get stuck standing behind shelves or sitting on the floor.

4) I’ll have access to a projector, which means I might be able to show y’all some things I don’t normally get to share with people….

Here’s a link to the facebook event, if you’d like more details.
