Deadlines, Prizes, Auctions, D&D, and… um… Poop

As I write this, the Worldbuilders fundraiser has raised over $665,000 dollars for Heifer international.

I don’t know about you, but I think that’s pretty great….

A lot of times when I talk about what Heifer International I focus on things like… well… heifers. Or goats. Or Chickens.

Part of the reason is that it’s easy for people to understand how giving a family a flock of chickens what you’re *really* giving them is a long-term supply of fresh food, and an income stream, and the ability to produce more chickens.

But Heifer international does more than just give animals to people, they also provide near-miraculous technologies that people in the developing world can use to make their lives better every day.

For example, Heifer International can help a family turn shit into money, time, food, and improved health for a family.

Here’s how:

A donation of $50 is enough to set a family up with a biogas digester. And if you donate before the end of the fundraiser, you have a chance to win amazing stuff.

Even more than that, if you donate on a specific team page, you have the chance of being included in *additional* prize draws that are unique to each page.

For example, if you donate on the D&D team page, you can win things that will give you a little help when you most need it at during your own tabletop games. Things like this:

Or these:

We’re giving away hundreds of these cards. Even full sets of them. That team just passed their $50K stretch goal, so we’re about to add even more cards to the prize draw AND show off the newly finished cards for those good good boys on the Adventure Zone….

Every $10 bucks you kick in over on that team page gets you a chance to win those cards as well as all the other prizes in the main lottery, too.

Lastly, I’m going to mention a few things on the blog you need to know about sooner rather than later. Strap in, because there’s kind of a lot….

There are over 80 auctions running: games and books and art and jewelry. Rare and Unique items. Strange and Wonderful things that you’ll never see anything else. If you haven’t headed over to look at them, now’s the time.

If you’re looking to do any Christmas shopping for that hard-to-buy-for geek in your life, you should really head over to the store and have a lookie-loo. We’ve to a bunch of new merchandise from all manner of folks over there. Including the fabulous owlbear backpack.

Amazing items such as this await your eager eyes over in the store. But if you want it shipped to you in time for the holidays, you better order soon…

  • Third, be aware that I’m streaming every day until the end of the fundraiser.

What’s more, every one of those streams will have something special going on. Games. Prizes for donors. Today (Thursday) I’ll be playing D&D for charity. Other days I’ll be having discussions like this:

(You can share this graphic around to spread the word, if you’re interested.)

*     *     *

Everything said, the fundraiser is going pretty amazingly. As I mentioned a while back, I was really nervous about a lot of the format changes we were making this year. But at this point, I feel like I can start to relax a little.

Most of all, I’m still hoping that if we push hard over the next 5 days, we can sail over the top of a million dollars.

I’d really like that.

I’ll see y’all soon.

Five Sentences, Three Events, Two Videos, and a Bag of Chips….

Heya everybody,

It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to get a solid blog up, so I thought I’d remedy that today, especially as there’s some news that’s a little time sensitive….

First and foremost, I’ve got a few readings and Q&As coming up in places I don’t visit very often.

  • Charleston, West Virginia

This Saturday (October 29th) I’ll be in West Virginia for the West Virginia Book Festival.

I’m going to be giving a talk on the importance of reading. (Where hopefully I’ll find something to say other than just shouting DUH! really loud.) I’ll also do some Q&A, and then have a signing for everyone who’s interested.

And if that isn’t enough for you, I’ll even be introduced by Justin McElroy, West Virginian and co-host of the awesome podcast “My Brother, My Brother, and Me.” It’s one of my newest loves, and if you don’t listen to it, you should. It is a source of genuine delight.

Here’s all the info for the event itself:

October 29, 2016 at 3:00 PM
Charleston Civic Center
Little Theater
200 Civic Center Dr
Charleston, West Virginia 25301
Facebook Event

If you’re in the area, come say hi. And if you happen to be in a different area…

  • Madison, Wisconsin

Despite the fact that I only live a hundred miles away, I’m doing my first event in Madison in years. Even better, I’ll actually be doing *two* different events, both with some Q&A and books available for purchase, though the first is primarily a reading and Q&A, and the second is primarily a keynote speech.

The first one is next week Thursday…

November 3, 2016 at 5:00 PM
Reading and Q&A
Agriculture Hall, Room 125
1450 Linden Dr
Madison, WI 53706

And the second is going to be on Friday night…

MADISON, WI
November 4, 2016 at 7:00 PM
Talk and Q&A
272 Bascom Hall
Madison, WI 53706

Both events will have books for purchase from A Room of One’s Own, one of my favorite bookstores in Madison. So if you’re all signed-book-wanty, this would be a great place to get one without paying shipping costs from our online store

For those of you who aren’t in West Virginia OR Wisconsin, there’s some cool internet things I’ve been up to as well….

  • Moana Screening in New York

And a couple weeks ago, his happened. For real.

I’ll probably gush about this more in the future. But the short of it is that I got to see an early version of Moana, and it was stunningly good.

More than that. Honestly? I think it might be the best Disney movie I’ve ever seen. Though honestly, with Lin Manuel Miranda involved, that shouldn’t really be a surprise.

Super good, folks. Seriously.

  • Podcast: “I’m Not Here to Judge You Chickenf*ckers.”

The most recent episode of Unattended Consequences is up, and it was a pretty good one. We recorded it live at NerdCon: Stories,  and the audience did a good job reining us in. We even said some not entirely stupid things.

Give it a listen if you’re so inclined. And be aware some of the stories I don’t have time to write up on the blog these days end up on the Podcast instead.

And finally, here’s the most time sensitive of the announcements:

  • A  delightful kickstarter that will help you friendship better.

Yesterday, I agreed to write five cards for Jenn and Trin’s Friendship Postcards Kickstarter Project:

You should really check this out. It’s a wonderful idea. The campaign includes cards like “Wow, that thing you did to your hair is super cool!”, “You make the internet a happier place,” and my favorite, “I said some shitty things (That’s not really how I feel, and I’m sorry.)”

782a6bde35266775fcadc2a84c8a34d3_originalWhen I saw this project, I actually emailed Trin and Jenn to tell them they were awesome, and to offer my help if they needed it.

I don’t talk about it a lot on here. But I have a hard time making and maintaining friendships these days. It used to be so easy for me. You just met people, they came over to your house. You watched movies and played games. You were friends.

Then I got published. I got busy. My friends moved away to pursue jobs and relationships. And I wasn’t in college any more. Wasn’t teaching any more. Wasn’t meeting people socially any more. Which means that friends don’t just happen to me any more. Which means… for about a decade now, I really haven’t had a lot of close friends.

But this last year, I’ve made a really good friend by the name of Thera. She’s better at being a friend than I am. And she’s taught me a lot about how to be a good friend as an adult (As opposed to just being a sort of an older maladjusted post-collegiate manbaby.)

So we’re writing these cards together. Me and my friend. Not only does this make me happy. Not only does this mean they’ll be better than if I did them myself. But it also means they’ll probably get done on time….

Here’s the downside, the project ends Thursday, October 27 at 1:00 PM CDT.

Yeah. Today. There’s just a few hours left. So if you want a set of postcards you should hop to it.

Be good to each other,

pat

Events in Seattle – PAX Prime 2015

Heya guys, Amanda here!

Pat is out in Seattle for PAX Prime, and he asked me to post up his schedule for the con so you could all find his glorious beard wherever its available.

Man, that was way creepier than I meant it to be.

For those of you not attending the con, on Thursday the 27th Pat is doing a reading and signing event with the University Bookstore, who are particularly good at keeping him caffeinated.

09032012_Kathy Ann Bugajsky_Patrick Rothfuss Signing_3 Coffees

(Three different coffees, one crazy signing…)

This event won’t be at the bookstore, but over at the University Temple right across the street. That way there will be room for everyone who might want to show up. This is the same place they hosted him when he did the Slow Regard of Silent Things tour, and that was a great event.

7:00 pm: Reading, Q&A, and Signing
University Temple United Methodist Church
1415 NE 43rd St.
Seattle, WA 98105
Facebook Event

There’s no ticket price, but they are accepting $5 donations to Worldbuilders from everyone who is willing to pay it, which is really awesome of them.

On to the schedule for the con…

  • Thursday, August 27

His first event is actually at PAX Dev, and it sounds pretty cool.

2:15pm-3:15pm: Pat and Mike Selinker talk about Narrative in Games. Westin Grand Ballroom 3

If you play board games and don’t know who Mike Selinker is, you probably actually do. He’s the game designer behind a lot of the greats, like Axis and Allies, Betrayal at House on the Hill, and my current personal favorite, The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. So you know he knows his stuff.

  • Friday, August 28

If you want to pick up some stuff from The Tinker’s Packs while you’re at PAX, the folks at Cards Against Humanity will have some of it, including the Pinny Arcade Talent Pipes, copies of The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle, decks of Name of the Wind Playing Cards, and Pairs Decks.

PAX Swag

You can check them out and buy them at the ACT Theater, along with lots of other stuff Cards Against Humanity is doing in there…

2pm-4pm: Signing in the Autograph Area in the Westin

8:30pm: D&D Live with Acquisitions Inc. – Darkmagic vs. Do’Urden. Main Theater

DD-Acquisitions-Inc.-V

Pat is once again playing Viari in the Acquisitions Inc campaign. Hopefully fewer chandeliers will be swung upon, but you really never know with Pat.

  • Saturday, August 29

3:30-4:30pm: An Afternoon with Patrick Rothfuss, Sasquatch Theater (Sheraton AB)

This is always a good time. Pat tends to tell crazy stories, read a bit, and generally goof off with the audience for an hour. If you want the true Rothfuss Experience ™, this is a great panel to go to.

5pm-7pm: Signing in the Autograph Area in the Westin

  • Sunday, August 30

2pm-3pm: Untitled Rothfuss:  The Live Conclusion of Max Temkin and Patrick Rothfuss’ Podcast, Sasquatch Theater (Sheraton AB)

If you haven’t been listening to Pat and Max’s podcast, you still have time to catch up. I listen every week. It started out as a way to monitor the stuff Pat was publicly announcing (like his willingness to sell his movie rights to Joss Whedon), and I ended up really enjoying it in the process.

Don’t tell Pat.

* * *

So that’s the plan, folks. If you want to catch Pat, these are the best places to do it. Even if the con isn’t your thing, you can still go to the signing event at the University Temple.

Thanks for letting me hijack the blog, guys. I promise not to go mad with power. Yet.

Contemporary Mythology

I was going to post up a little story about my recent Halloween adventures at Neil Gaiman’s House on the Rock shindig. But I can’t find the right pictures I need to illustrate it, so I’m guessing it will have to wait a little bit.

In the meantime, I have a link to a video of the panel I was on about Contemporary Mythology.

I post this link with some trepidation, as I don’t remember exactly what I might have said on the panel. This isn’t anything odd. I rarely remember more than a few snippets after I’m done speaking on a panel. But the snippets I remember from this panel particular panel make me vaguely uneasy. I dimly remember saying something about “the revolution” and something else along the lines of “you can all roll around in your own filth if you want.”

Soooo…. yeah. It seems like I should remember more than a handful of words out of a 45 minute panel. But I don’t. I wonder if that’s weird. Maybe I have a disorder or something.

Anyway, feel free to watch it if you’re interested.

The picture is a little fuzzy, but then again, so am I….
