More Awesome Books

We’re winding down here, folks. As of  tonight (Tuesday, Dec 9th) all of this year’s auctions are live.

We haven’t talked about all of them yet in the blog, but they’re all posted up on e-bay in all their glory. So if you’d like a sneak peek of some things coming up, there you go.

A lot of stuff in today’s blog. Most of these books are signed, doodled in, and/or rare.

What’s more, we have several books in today’s blog that are Advance Reading Copies of books that won’t be hitting the shelves for months. That means you have unprecedented chances to get hold of books before your friends. so you can taunt them and post up teaser reviews on Goodreads.

deadboys

Earlier in the fundraiser, when we ran our auctions for Professional Manuscript Critiques, we told the story of Gabriel Squailia. Back in 2010, he won a read-and-critique in a Worldbuilders auction from my agent, Matt Bialer. Matt liked it enough to offer to represent Gabriel, and this spring, Gabriel’s book is going to be published.

We were really excited to hear about it, and asked Gabriel if we could talk about his success story. He was more than happy to let us, and sent over two ARCs of the upcoming book as well. A few people on Goodreads have had the good luck to get a copy from Gabriel in person, and they seem to like it quite a bit.

We’ve thrown one into the lottery, and we’ve also got one up for auction. Bid on it over here.

crown duel

Sherwood Smith has been a fantastic supporter over the years. This donation is particularly awesome, mostly because it’s one of only three that exist in the entire world.

This is a special reprinting of her 2002 YA fantasy novel Crown Duel, containing the corrected ebook text, the short story “Vidanric’s Birthday Surprise,” and several scenes from Vidanric’s point of view. Sherwood has lovingly decorated this book for us, including detailing the first letter of every chapter with calligraphy. It’s truly a beautiful thing.

  • Copies of The Fault in Our Stars. Signed by John Green.

_DSC0717

Amanda told me once that John Green was her favorite author.

That’s right. She said it right to my face. She didn’t even pretend to feel bad about it. I took it as a challenge, and started reading his books, convinced that she was crazy. But I ended up really enjoying them. I wrote up a Goodreads Review of Looking for Alaska, which mostly features me feeling guilty about all of the pain I’ve caused my readers.

John sent over some signed copies The Fault in Our Stars. We’ve put all of them into the lottery except for one, and that one’s going up for auction and you can bid on it over here.

  • Copies of Indigo Heartfire. Signed by Jo Marryat.

_DSC0716

These books were printed specially just for Worldbuilders. They even say so right on the cover, so whoever wins this knows that they’ve got one out of 10 copies in the world. They’re really cool, and all going into the lottery.

  • Auction: ARC of Mirror Sight. Signed, inscribed, and doodled by Kristen Britain.

britain

Last year, Kristen Britain donated a signed dust jacket and doodled page of the rough draft of the book. Now that it’s been published, we’ve got a great, signed ARC of the book, and so we’re auctioning it off just for you. It includes a doodle of the most determined-looking hummingbird I’ve ever seen.

Bid on it here.

“Catherynne Valente writes in the language of dreams, which is not rational and yet always makes sense. I could read the poems in this book a hundred times and find new meanings, new pleasures in them. It is an astonishingly beautiful and deeply satisfying accomplishment … A brilliant, beautiful book.” – Theodora Goss

Catherynne Valente has a way of taking beautiful words and twining them together to make them stronger, bolder, and more delicate, all at once. I enjoyed her longer fiction quite a bit, particularly The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland…, and this book of her shorter work is just as lovely.

  • Auction: A set of The Others Series: Written in Red, Murder of Crows, and an ARC of Vision in Silver. All signed by Anne Bishop.

bishop

Anne sent over a complete set of The Others, including an ARC of the 3rd book in the series, Vision in Silver, which doesn’t come out until March. Fans of the series could get an early read of the book, and folks who know fans can lord it over them for the next few months.

Bid here to do just that.

“A stunningly original yarn, deeply imagined, beautifully articulated and set forth in clean, limpid, sensual prose.” – Kirkus Reviews

  • Hardcover copies of the Memoirs of Lady Trent: A Natural History of Dragons and The Tropic of Serpents. Signed and inscribed to Worldbuilders by Marie Brennan.

brennan

My new favorite thing authors are doing is inscribing their books to Worldbuilders. Marie Brennan sent these along and we’re happy to be putting these gorgeous books up into the lottery.

“Saturated with the joy and urgency of discovery and scientific curiosity.” – Publishers Weekly

  • Auction: Lettered, slipcased, and leatherbound edition of The Asimov Chronicles. Signed by Isaac Asimov and illustrators Ron Lindhan and Val Lakey Lindhan.

asimov

This, my friends, is something extremely rare.

Those of you watching the early part of the Worldbuilders Livestream yesterday may have seen a few of us smelling the book, since it smells like its beautiful wood slipcase and leather. This book was severely limited, and features one story from each of Asimov’s 50 years writing them.

It’s a beautiful, signed edition. It’s lettered SS out of 52 lettered copies, very hard to track down, and it’s up for auction over here.

  • The Great Bazaar & Brayan’s Gold and Messenger’s Legacy. Both signed by Peter V. Brett and include a signed bookplate.

brett

We love Peter V. Brett around here, and these are seriously gorgeous editions of his novellas. They’re from the UK, so they’re extra posh.

We’ve thrown a set into the lottery, including the first three books in the seriesThe Warded ManThe Desert Spear, and The Daylight War.

There’s also a set of the two novellas up for auctionfor those of you who know how badly you need them.

slaughter

This is a Subterranean Press publication, so you know it’s going to be beautiful. Vincent Chong did the cover art as well as the interior illustrations, and for this specific copy he’s signed it and doodled it beautifully. (Embiggen the above picture to see the beautiful illustration.)

Even more, it’s completely sold out, so if you want to grab it, you’re going to have to get it here.

  • Auction: An ARC of Trial of Intentions . Signed by Peter Orullian, won’t be out until May of 2015.

orulian

Some of you may remember Peter’s musical support of Worldbuilders the last few years. This year he’s sent us a very early copy of his upcoming novel, so we’re auctioning it off. Whosoever wins this auction will get a great treat in getting to read this five months early…

“An ambitious story in the mold of Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind.” – Kevin J. Anderson.

If you want that chance, bid here.

_DSC0726

I love Terry Pratchett, and this collection of short stories would be a great way to be introduced to his work, if you live under a rock and have never read any before. Not only is this book signed by him, but it has his cool holographic seal as well.

“Clever, neatly constructed and funny. Pratchett is one of the great comic writers and storytellers of our time.” – Guardian

  • A hardcover set of Discworld novels: Reaper ManMortHogfather, and Soul Music by Terry Pratchett.

_DSC0727

These are particularly beautiful. Gollancz wanted to print nice, affordable hardcover editions of the Discworld books, and the ones they’ve done so far have knocked it out of the park. We’ve got four of them collected here, each one featuring fan-favorite anthropomorphic personification Death, and we’ve put them into the lottery.

  • Auction: A first edition hardcover copy of The Illustrated Eric. Signed by Terry Pratchett.

eric

“A hearty dose of comedy and genuine slapstick humor.” – Library Journal

This awesome hardcover sendup of the Faust story has a built-in bookmark, as well as plenty of illustrations by Josh Kirby. Not only is it a first edition, but it’s signed by Pratchett himself. Any collector should be excited to grab this, and so if you want it, it’s up for auction over here.

  • First edition copies of The Art of Asking. Signed by Amanda Palmer.

_DSC0383

Amanda Palmer is a rockstar in both the literal and figurative sense. This book is a great look at what it means to ask for help, and the ways that people can overcome their fears of doing so to have a more meaningful encounter with people.

As someone who lives in the midwest, where we could never ask for help even if we were dying, reading this is like delving into some arcane mystery. The thought of merely asking someone for help is utterly alien to most of us, and it’s a bit of an eye-opener.

We’re putting several signed copies of this into the lottery, and one up for auction over here.

  • First edition copies of Fortunately, the Milk. Signed by Neil Gaiman.

_DSC0365

Gaiman is a fantastic author, and we all know that, but he’s a particularly fantastic author of children’s books. This one came out last year, and it’s really wonderful. Oot really enjoyed it. So that’s some high praise there.

We’ve got two first editions, so we’re putting one in the lottery, and one up for auction right here.

  • First edition copies of The Graveyard Book. Signed by Neil Gaiman.

_DSC0400

I’ve listened to the audiobook version of this with Oot a while back. He really enjoyed it, and I wrote about his response to it in a Goodreads review. It was his first introduction to an audiobook, and I’m glad I started him out on Gaiman.

There are a few copies here, so again, we’ve got some in the lottery and we also have one up for auction which you can bid on here.

snowglassapples

Amanda lusts after this book like you wouldn’t believe. It’s number 10 of 250. When we had one back in 2010, Gaiman said this:

A note — the SNOW GLASS APPLES book is the text of the Play for Voices (as recorded by Seeing Ear Theatre, starring Bebe Neuwirth), with the Queen’s dialogue printed in red ink. (I only found one for sale online, for over $300.)

They only printed 250 of these, and even when you could buy them from Biting Dog Press they would cost you over a hundred bucks. But the book has been sold out for ages, of course.

Because the people here in the office knew I’d bid on it in an auction, we’ve decided to put this special book into the lottery. Something extra cool and rare that anyone can win so long as they donate $10 or more on the Worldbuilders home page.

Whoever wins it, I hope they give it a loving home.

* * *

Thanks to everyone who’s been pitching in. There are a lot of stretch goals being unlocked, including the newest Hank Green video, which Amanda described as, “impossible not to dance to.”

Speaking of dancing, if you haven’t seen Kevin Hearne’s Thriller Video, you are missing one of the finer things in life.

Continue being awesome, everyone.

Spread the word.

Six days left.

Comics and Graphic Novels

It’s been a crazy couple of days here at Worldbuilders.

On Wednesday night, we did our first-ever live streaming video hangout with a bunch of cool geek glitterati, like Vi Hart, Molly Lewis, John Scalzi, Brian Brushwood, Mary Robinette Kowal… too many of them to list, really. You can see the entire four-hour glorious debacle over here.

Buzzfeed did an article about the copy of Stardust that has become the unofficial Worldbuilders mascot.

And yesterday I posted up a blog explaining how folks donating to Worldbuilders could win a chance to become one of my beta readers, among other things….

As I type this, our current donation total is $531,000.

That’s right, because lovely folks like you have been chipping in and helping to spread the word, Worldbuilders has raised more than $120,000 dollars in the last 36 hours. This fills me with joy.

That’s going to do a lot of good in the world.

goat 1

Today we’ve got some delightful donations from the comic world….

Some of today’s items are going in the lottery, and others are going up for auction on e-bay. So pay attention. You can also see *all* Worldbuilder’s current auctions over here.

*     *     *

Over the years, we’ve done manuscript read-and-critiques, tuckerizations, and feedback on novels. But this year, we reached out to a few comic creators to see if we could do something similar for the graphically inclined.

Adam_Casalino

Adam Casalino, creator of the fantasy webcomic The Wizard of Quippley, is offering a Tuckerization in the second chapter of his new story: The Goblin Wars. For your donation you will be immortalized in this exciting fantasy epic, as character or creature appearing in one of the comic’s installments. Become a great warrior of legend, or a vile monster of contempt. Be the envy of all your friends! Adam will use your name and even likeness in the comic and make you a part of the heroes’ journey.

If you want a chance at being in this comic, bid over here.

GuitarHeroGreg

Since 1999, Greg Dean has been making his comic, Real Life, in Adobe Illustrator. With over 3,100 comics under his belt, he knows a thing or two about the program. All of that knowledge is just swimming in his brain, and he’s willing to share it with you! He’ll set up an online classroom and based on your current Illustrator skill set, you’ll get a 2 hour lesson, one-on-one to ask questions and see him answer with live demonstrations. By the end of it, you’ll be able to understand the tools and how to hack those tools to make do neat effects.

Not a beginner? That’s OK! He’s willing to teach an Intermediate class for you. Since it’s just the two of you, it’s completely tailored to your current skill set!

To bid on this, which really could be useful for *anyone*, head over here.

  • Auction: A read and critique of up to 50 strips of your webcomic series by Kris Straub.

Kris-Straub-Portrait

Kris Straub is willing and ready to critique one comic series of up to 50 pages or strips, either continuity- or gag-based. He will provide thoughts about your story premise and concept, the sensibility of the humor in your series, dialogue and gag construction, overall pacing and layout, and his opinion on the strengths and weaknesses of your work.

Kris Straub is a cartoonist, writer, designer and humor scientist. STARSLIP, his seven-year science fiction comic series, was nominated for an Ignatz award in 2012. His cosmic horror series BROODHOLLOW funded a wildly successful Kickstarter in August 2013. He is co-author of the 2007 Image Comics book How To Make Webcomics. In 2008 he wrote the horror short story Candle Cove.

If you want someone this awesome giving you feedback on your webcomic draft, head over here.

bh_auction1

This contains: A hardcover copy of Broodhollow: Curious Little Thing, signed and drawn in by the author, including a six-page additional story unavailable online; an envelope full of initiation documents for entry into the Society of the Skull and Shovels; two sets of travel postcards from Broodhollow; a Skull and Shovels insignia pin in antiqued brass; a”Cadavre” cloisonne pin, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the famed Belgian newspaper comics character; a Broodhollow “Town Pride” cloisonne pin, only available through the Kickstarter; a rare Mercy pin, only available through very high tiers of the Kickstarter; and a very rare Zane pin, no longer available except from Kris in person.

Honestly? I wanted to put this into an auction. Because then I could bid on it, because I’m kind of a geek for Broodhollow.

But Amanda has forced me to put it into the lottery instead. That way anyone has a chance to win it by donating to the Team Page.

So it looks like I’m going to be donating to my own fundraiser. Again.

  • A Deluxe Edition of The Last Unicorn graphic novel.  Signed by Peter S. Beagle.

Last Unicorn - cover

This deluxe edition was donated by a longtime Worldbuilders supporter, Kali. When Peter S. Beagle was doing a massive tour through the area, Kali went there with this book, specifically to get it signed for Worldbuilders.

As you all know, I’m a huge fan of the Last Unicorn, and the comic adaptation is brilliant. Best of all, this hardcover edition of the books is *very* posh. So whoever wins it in the lottery is going to be getting something lovely.

  • Auction: A vintage film cell from the animated film The Last Unicorn.  Signed by Peter S. Beagle.

Last Unicorn Full

This is a true rarity.  We have a frame of the original film cells from the Rankin/Bass animated film, in a clear protective cover.  The cell is from the original 1982 American theatrical release, and the cover is signed by Peter S. Beagle, who wrote the novel and the screenplay for the film.

To see more pictures or bid on the auction you can head over here.

  • A Set of Omnibus Volumes 1 & 2 of The Gutters.  Signed by Ryan Sohmer.

Gutters set

Here we have two huge, beautiful Absolute editions of The Gutters, a comic about comics and the comic industry. If you follow comics, this is going to be a great read for you. If you’re *not* a big comic reader, it’s still pretty great, as I said in my goodreads review, I don’t follow a lot of mainstream comics or know a lot about the industry. But I still had a blast reading this…

“The Gutters is truly a unique webcomic beast… At the end of the day, the combination of a rotating art cast with Sohmer’s wit and criticism of the comic industry equals a damn funny webcomic that had the Unshaven Comics crew doing spit takes while we roamed through the archives. ” – ComicMix

  • A copy of Dork Covenant: Dork Tower Volume 1.  Signed by John Kovalic.

IMG_1405

Dork Tower is pretty much the coolest. It’s a great comic about gaming and board games, and it’s done by none other than the awesome John Kovalic, who has illustrated tons of games and been a huge part of the gaming community.

We’re putting this in the lottery, so anyone who donates to Heifer International on the Worldbuilders Team Page gets a chance at winning it, as well as thousands of other cool books. Many of them rare, signed, or otherwise unique.

Munchkin Game

This is a really cool game that very nearly anyone can play. And because of that, we’re throwing them into the lottery, where anyone who donates to Heifer International on the Worldbuilders team page can win them.

Munchkin Game

And, because we know some of you out there *really* need to get hold of a copy of this double-signed game, we’re putting one up in the auction.

You can place your bids over here.

  • Auction: A limited edition “The Luggage” Munchkin card. Signed by John Kovalic.

IMG_1404

This is the official, and only, Terry-Pratchett-authorized Munchkin Discworld card. It was released at North America Discworld Convention when it was in Madison, two years ago.

Not only is this signed by Kovalic himself. But if you click to embiggen the above card, you’ll see that John has made an addendum to this already awesome card. It’s now +4 for the winner of the auction.

And he’s John Kovalic. So nobody can rules-lawyer you about it. This is cannon.

You can bid on this rare, signed, modded card over here.

  • Auction: Become an official Munchkin card, drawn by John Kovalic.  Includes signed original art and a signed copy of the game.

$_57

And in case all of that wasn’t enough for you, we have something extra special to close out today’s blog.

John Kovalic is offering to draw you into a new Munchkin card, which will be released in an actual game. As a bonus, you will receive the original art, signed, as well as a signed copy of the game that contains the card.

Yeah. Needless to say, this is a pretty awesome offer. When John offered up something similar for Child’s Play earlier this year, it went for $4000.

Not that I have anything against, Child’s Play. But I’d *love* to see us beat that.

To become an official Munchkin, head over here and make your bids.

*     *     *

Remember folks, we’re days away from the end of Worldubilders. That means you only have a little time left to donate on our team page for a chance to win thousands of books. ShelfJanuary

Also, we’ve unlocked a ton of new stretch goals today because of all the new donations.

If you have any ideas for more stretch goals, feel free to mention them in the comments below. If we don’t have time to use them this year, we might make use of them for our next fundraiser….

Posted in Worldbuilders 2013 | By Pat58 Responses

Signed Rarities by Gaiman and Pratchett

Things are going really well over here at Worldbuilders. We’re closing in on the end of the fundraiser, so headquarters is a whirlwind of activity. Every day more books come in from authors and publishers, blogs are assembled by our team of indentured internet elves, and orders are packaged and shipped out from our online store.

Best of all, donations keep rolling in on the Worldbuilders Team page.

In fact, donations are coming in so quickly we’re having trouble keeping up with our stretch goals. As I write this, we’re at 347,000 dollars, which means if we raise another $3,000 Hank Green will record a video of himself seducing a tree.

Seriously.

If people continue to chip in, it looks like we’ve got a decent chance of hitting our $500,000 goal, where Neil Gaiman will record a video of himself reading Green Eggs and Ham.

You know you want to see that.

*     *     *

Today we’ve got works from two of my very favorite authors: Neil Gaiman and Sir Terry Pratchett.

These items have been donated by different folks over the last year. Some of them are going up for auction, and some of them you can win by donating directly to Heifer International on the Worldbuilders Team Page.

Let’s start with Terry Pratchett.

Last Hero cover

“A fable? Perhaps. Fabulous? Certainly” – The Times

This is a bit of an oddity, as it’s one of the few Discworld novels that’s illustrated. What’s more, the illustrator has signed this copy, making it increasingly awesome.

As with most of the books in today’s blog, we’re putting this one in the lottery, where anyone who donates at least $10 gets a chance to win it. (And if you donate more, your chances of winning improve too.)

My thought is this book will either find a loving home in the arms of a Pratchett fan, or it will brighten the lives of a person (a sad, lonely person) who hasn’t experienced the joy of Discworld yet.

  • Auction: A copy of The Art of Discworld. Signed by Paul Kidby.

Art of Discworld - lying

Paul Kidby has been doing the art for Discworld for about 20 years, and it’s always hilarious and beautiful. This book has full versions of some of the works he’s made for dust jackets and other prints, as well as some paintings that aren’t available anywhere else.

This book is also signed by Mr. Kidby, so we’re auctioning it off over here.

Daybreak Kidby Print - full

Here we have a great faerie print by Paul Kidby.  It’s a different side to his artwork, and was featured in a collection of art called La Royaume Enchante.

We have a print of it up for auction, so if you want in, be sure to go bid on it.

Greebo Rising

This is a really great print of Nanny Ogg’s cat Greebo, about to pounce on an unsuspecting little fellow.

It’s extra cool because it’s signed by both Paul and Terry Pratchett, and is numbered 696 out of 950.

If you want to hang this beautiful beast on your wall, go bid on it before someone else does.

Death Print and Book

We’re bundling both of these together for fans of Terry Pratchett’s Death character.

This is a great print signed by Terry and Paul, as well as an awesome mapbook of Death’s domain signed by the artist himself, Paul Kidby.

If you want to add these to your collection, you can bid on them over here.

*     *     *

Now on to the Neil Gaiman items…

  • Auction: Media print, modeled by Amanda Palmer. Numbered and signed by Lee Moyer.

Amanda P Moyer Pinup

 (Click to embiggen)

This is a numbered print of the pin-up Lee Moyer did for Neil Gaiman’s page in last year’s Pin-up-calendar.

Neils rockstar wife, Amanda Palmer, was the model for this delightfully meta depiction of Media. So this print is sure to please any fan of American Gods, Neil Gaiman, or Amanda Palmer herself…

To bid, head over here.

Fortunately the Milk - signatures

This awesome children’s book is Gaiman’s most recent publication, and this edition is signed by both him and the illustrator. That thing tucked in by Chris’s signature is a little metal bookmark with the Neil cartoon screened onto it.

We’re throwing it into the lottery, so anyone can share it with the kid (or child-like adult) in their life.

Stardust - standing

“A twisting, wondrous tale full of magic that only Neil Gaiman could have written.” – Chicago Tribune

If you don’t win our beloved Stardust ARC in the lottery this year, you still have a chance at winning this beautiful, signed copy.

  • First edition copy of Fragile Things.  Signed by Neil Gaiman.

Fragile Things - standing

“Half the pleasure of reading Gaiman comes from his lighthearted prose… the other half comes from Gaiman’s inventiveness.  His work resists categorization… Gaiman not only taps into our collective unconscious… but reinvents our myths.” – Houston Chronicle

This is a great collection of some of Gaiman’s short fiction and poetry.  If you haven’t read any of that before, you’re going to have to, and soon.

Melinda - standin

This is a beautiful story, and seriously hard to come by.  Most places, it goes for as much as $500. It’s printed on specially selected red-speckled paper with black and white illustrations and several color plates that were hand-set.

What’s more, It’s double signed on the first plate (once in silver marker and once in purple), which makes it double cool. Or maybe four times as cool. I’m not sure about the math here…

This one’s in the lottery too. So every $10 you donate on our Team Page gets you another chance to win it and all the other books we have in the lottery.

Dangerous Alphabet - cover

“Gaiman and Grimly have combined forces to produce an acrid, gothic confection that bubbles with vitriol and wit.” – ALA Booklist

  • Auction: A first-edition copy of Duran Duran: The First Four Years of the Fab Five. Signed by Neil Gaiman.

DuranDuran - Standing

I’ll say it before you do: What does a Duran Duran biography have to do with Neil Gaiman?

Well, this was actually the *first* book Neil Gaiman ever wrote.

It’s ridiculously rare, as the publisher went bankrupt after the book had only one small print run. Plus, people didn’t know they should be collecting their beloved Duran Duran biographies back in the 80s. Apparently, lots of people cut up their copies for the pictures.

So when Worldbuilders fan David saw a copy out in the wild, he felt he *needed* to pick it up. And when he got it signed, Gaiman wrote: “This is one from the vaults…”

Then David sent us to us. And we did a little dance.

For the truly avid Neil Gaiman collector, or someone who’s really into Duran Duran, this rarity is up for auction over here.

  • Auction: A numbered edition copy of A Screenplay.  Signed by Neil Gaiman.

Screenplay Cover

Another rarity, this is numbered 436 out of 500.  It’s a beautiful copy of the book which was never available for general sale, and hasn’t been read by many.

If you want one for your very own, you can bid on it over here.

  • A limited edition copy of The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Signed and inscribed by Neil Gaiman specially for Worldbuilders.

Ocean at - Standing

As I’ve mentioned before on my blog and in my goodreads review, I had a fairly major geek out over Ocean at the End of the Lane.

So I couldn’t be more pleased when, before we were even requesting donations, Neil offered to send this copy in for Worldbuilders this year.

It’s a lovely, slipcased, limited edition book, and Gamain added his own flourish to it.

Ocean at - inscription

Honestly? When I saw that, it made my heart a little melty.

This one’s going in the lottery too.

  • A complete set of  The Absolute Sandman Volumes 1-5.  Signed by Neil Gaiman.

Sandman - stack

I’m guessing most of you know about Sandman. It’s a comic series that finally convinced a lot of people (including me) that comics were a brilliant storytelling medium in their own right. That comics could be as marvelous and orchestral and clever as anything ever written by Shakespeare or Chaucer or Homer.

These are the Absolute editions of the entire Sandman series. The art has been retouched. And they’re collected into gorgeous, slipcased, hard-bound books.

Just calling these “books” doesn’t give the right impression. These are Tomes.

Sandman - towering

Here’s the thing. These weren’t originally going to be in the fundraiser.

You see, couple months ago I found these in a store. The whole set. Signed. And I love Sandman. And I love Gaiman. And I love beautiful books. I wanted them with a powerful powerful want. I coveted these books.

So I bought them. I spend kind of a lot of of money on them.

Then, a couple days ago, we were planning out the blogs. And we were putting a bunch of cool Neil Gaiman stuff in the blog, and I thought to myself, “If I put these into the prize lottery, anyone who donates to Worldbuilders will be able to win them.”

Sandman - signature

But they were my books. They were precious to me. My precious.

“They’ll make an awesome prize,” I thought. “Some book geek out there will win them. And they’ll love these books. And they’ll give them a good home. And they will be really, really happy.”

Sandman wall

But they were my books. I hadn’t even had a chance to read them yet.

“People will get excited about them,” I thought to myself. “And people will go in and donate a little more with the hope of winning them, because they are beautiful. And those people will have warm, fuzzy feelings because they’ve made the world a better place. And kids all over the world will have milk to drink and eggs to eat. Kids will get to go to school and have better lives.”

So. I’m putting them into the lottery.

For every ten bucks you donate, you get a chance to win. Not just the books we’re showing here, but over a thousand books donated by authors, fans, and publishers. Tens of thousands of dollars worth of books.

Here’s the link.

Signed Books by Gaiman and Pratchett

Those of you who have been following Worldbuilders for a couple years will probably recognize this book.

It’s a book with a story behind it. And the story goes like this.

2008: A Gift from Gaiman.

In 2008 I was still a newbie author, hardly published for more than a year. On a whim, I decided to try raising money for Heifer International on my blog. Things quickly spiraled out of control as other authors pitched in, spreading the word about the fundraiser and donating books.

The pinnacle of the coolness/madness came when Neil Gaiman mentioned us to his vast legion of readers. He also donated a rare ARC of Stardust to the cause.

Unfortunately, mail was slow around the holidays, so we couldn’t use the book until….

2009: Stardust for the people.

We had this beautiful book. This beautiful, *rare* book. And I was having a hard time deciding how best to use it. I knew we could auction it off and raise at least a thousand dollars, maybe a couple thousand dollars, but that didn’t seem right somehow.

So I decided to put it into the lottery, that way anyone who donated to Heifer on our team page would have a chance at winning it. That seemed fair to me, more egalitarian.

At the end of the fundraiser someone wins the book. And in an amazing fit of generosity, they donate it back to Worldbuilders. Their one stipulation is that we auction it off next year, so it will bring in more money for Heifer.

2010: Stardust on the Auction Block.

During year three of Worldbuilders, we auctioned off all manner of things. And, as the previous winner requested, we put Gaiman’s copy of the Stardust ARC up on e-bay too.

After some fierce bidding it sold for over $2500 to a lovely guy named Dan. There were many high-fives in Worldbuilders central. We were sad to see the book go, but $2500 bucks buys a lot of goats.

But when I e-mailed Dan to arrange shipping, he said he wanted to donate the book back to Worldbuilders.

I asked Dan if he was sure. He said he was sure. I asked Dan how he got to be so cool, and he said he was inspired by the story of how last year’s winner re-donated the book.

But most of the credit, he said, should go to his mom. She always made a point of donating to charity even though she never had a lot of money. Not only that, but she was a died-in-the-wool geek like the rest of us: she read fantasy and sci-fi, she played Infocom games…

From everything I’ve heard, she sounds like my kind of lady.

Dan told me she had passed away recently, and that most of the money he inherited from her went into buying this book. He thinks she would be proud and happy to know that the money will go to helping as many people as possible through Heifer.

Dan also said that he was a big Gaiman fan, and that he hoped that this whole exchange didn’t give Gaiman a complex because nobody would keep his book….

His only stipulation was that we put the book back into the lottery next year, so anyone can win it….

2011: Full Circle.

We put the ARC back in the lottery to much cheering. After picking the prizes, I call the winner, Maayan, to set up shipping (because you don’t want something like this to be a surprise on a doorstep).

Maayan tells me no.  She wants it back in the fundraiser.  It’s sort of a thing now.

So I send her a box of books as a “Thanks for being cool” present.

And now we go back to our roots. It’s back in the lottery, where anyone can win it.

  • A rare, numbered ARC of Stardust.  Signed by Neil Gaiman.

This beautiful book comes with its own slipcase.  Numbered 28 out of 250.  Signed.

Rest assured that the book is in immaculate shape. It’s been cocooned in bubble wrap for years. If you win it, you can finally give it a loving home, and Neil can sleep a little sounder knowing that someone out there has finally claimed his book.

All it takes is a donation chance of winning it if you donate at least $10 to Heifer International on our team page by January 21st.

*     *     *

Only one person can win the Stardust ARC, so this year we’re putting in some extra Gaiman items to spread the joy around. Some are auctions, some are in the lottery.

We have some books and posters signed by Pratchett, too. And this seems like a good place to put them, given that we’ve got a copy of Good Omens signed by both Pratchett *and* Gaiman up for grabs too.

  • Stardust, Fragile Things, and Neverwhere audio books by Neil Gaiman.

If you haven’t ever heard Neil Gaiman read his own work, you owe it to yourself to make that happen. Someday I hope to be half the narrator he is.

How good is he? Well, we listened to Neverwhere on the drive back from ChiCon last summer, and it kept Oot transfixed and quiet for hours.  So it’s practically magic.

  • Telling Tales and Speaking in Tongues audio CDs by Neil Gaiman.

These are a bit more rare.  They were published Dreamhaven Books, which makes them extra cool, and also means that’s really the only place you can get them easily.

Or, you could donate some money to the Team Page and have a chance to win them while making the world suck less.

  • Auction: Warning: Contains Language audio CD.  Signed by Neil Gaiman.

This CD was also published by Dreamhaven. It’s got a bunch of stuff from his Angels & Visitations collection, with music provided by illustrator/director/all around renaissance man Dave McKean. There’s even a hidden track, but don’t worry. It’s not too hidden.

To bid on this auction, head over here.

“Set in ancient Japan, this story is a haunting fable of ill-fated love and dream-eating monsters, told in an illustrated text format, and painted by Japanese artist Yoshitaka Amano.”

  • Auction: An Evening with Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer poster.  Signed by Neil Gaiman.

(Lead weights not included.  Those are mine and I need them. Because.  Because reasons)

Here’s something cool.  It’s a promotional poster from the tour Neil and Amanda did. These weren’t easy to get at the time, and odds are if someone has one now, they’re probably going to keep it.

Added Bonus? It’s fuzzy.  I want to touch it, but Maria keeps slapping my hand away.

To bid, click here for the auction.

Gaiman has done some great kids books besides Coraline.  This is one of them.  It’s not quite as dark as Coraline, but Odd is no less clever.  Some day Oot will meat a bear, a fox and an eagle, and I know he’ll be prepared for his adventure because of this book.

“Using several figures from Norse mythology, Gaiman has written a thoughtful and quietly humorous fantasy that younger Percy Jackson fans will enjoy.” – Library Journal

  • The Day I Swapped my Dad for Two Goldfish.  Signed and doodled by Neil Gaiman.

Kids trade the darndest things. I only hope that if Oot trades me off for something that he’s savvy enough to get more than a couple goldfish.  I’d like to think I’m worth at least an iguana or two.  Or one of those brightly colored, poisonous frogs, the kind you use for lickin’.

“A bittersweet, guffaw-out-loud story from the most distinctive partnership in picture books today.” – The Guardian

Blueberry Girl is an awesome children’s book that encourages unconventional girls to keep it up.  As usual, Gaiman manages to be relentlessly inspiring without being saccharine.  If you know anybody who happens to have a daughter, be a daughter, or be at all human, you may need to get this for them.  Crazy Hair is goofy and weird and awesome.  It involves hair, something I’m pretty familiar with.  It also must be read out loud, even if you’re by yourself.

“Fans of Gaiman and Vess will pounce on this creation; so too will readers who seek for their daughters affirmation that sidesteps traditional spiritual conventions.” – Publishers Weekly

“Provoking questions about what it is to be free in thought and form, this is a work of unique luminescence that may well change the way hair is looked at forever” – The Bookseller

The auction for Blueberry Girl is here.  The auction for Crazy Hair is here.

Here we have a children’s book from Discworld that Pratchett references in the book Snuff. I honestly didn’t know it even existed until it showed up for the fundraiser. I guess that makes me a bad fan.

Given how much I liked his other discworld children’s book: “Where is my Cow?” I’m eager to read this one, too.

Click here and bid on it.

Some of y’all may not have seen what Terry Pratchett does when he signs books.  He’s got a stamp AND a cool foil sticker.  I wish I had thought of something like this.

(Click to Embiggen)

This book is super awesome.  It’s rare, first edition, and double signed.  And it’s in the lottery. Only donors can win it.

This, however, is not in the lottery.  We got some really cool Pratchett/Kidby art this year, and this print is one of the coolest.

To bid on the print, click here.

Discworld is something everyone needs to read at some point.  If not all of them, at least a few.

A good place to start is here, with the first one that was published.  It even has a decent mini-series you can watch as well.  Though, as always, the book is better.

This copy is even the UK edition.  It has a “u” in “colour” so you know it’s fancy.

And here it is.  The big one.  A double signed, UK edition of Good Omens.  This has a beautiful dust jacket that represents both the angel and demon characters. Signed by Pratchett and Gaiman both.

If you want to bid on it, you should click here.

*     *     *

You should make sure to make your donation on the Worldbuilders Team Page by January 21st. For every $10 you pitch in, you get another chance to win thousands of books and DVD’s.

You can view all of our current auctions over here to check on all of our last-minute awesome that needed to get out.

If you want to see the other items that have been donated to Worldbuilders, or learn more about the fundraiser itself, you can head over to our main page.

Books from Gollancz, Exterminating Angel Press, and AudioGo

This is a Worldbuilders Blog.

Gollancz has been a big supporter of Worldbuidlers for the last several years. They’re a huge UK publisher, so it’s worth noting that everything from them is the UK edition, which automatically makes it 6 times fancier.

  • 5 box sets of the the Sookie Stackhouse Novels paperback box set by Charlaine Harris.

“Harris does an admirable job of creating a heroine who’s not only interesting but completely believable in a world of the strange and the different. Natural and humorous dialogue and a nicely paced plot.” – Publishers Weekly

“Enthralling . . . a story so packed with thrills, comedy, drama and a bit of red herring that the result is apt to satisfy the most discriminating, and hungry, reader.”— The Denver Post

“Sanderson’s saga of consequences offers complex characters and a compelling plot, asking hard questions about loyalty, faith and responsibility.” – Publishers Weekly

  • A full set of the Gollancz 50 Top Ten: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick,The Book of the New Sun: Shadow and Claw by Gene Wolfe,  I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, Dune by Frank Herbert, The Time Machine by H. G. Wells, Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, Eric by Terry Pratchett, Hyperion by Dan Simmons, Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, and Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

For it’s 50th’s aniversary, Gollancz polled its readers, asking them to vote on their best titles over the last 50 years.

They printed the top ten books in special retro editions, five sci-fi, five in fantasy. To my delight, The Name of the Wind was one of the five fantasy picks.

These editions are out of print now, but you can win the full here at Worldbuilders by donating to Heifer International.

  • Auction: A full set of the Gollancz 50 Top Ten: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K.

And for those of you who simply HAVE to have it.  We’re throwing a set up in an auction over here.

And now, some books from Exterminating Angel Press:

  • 2 copies of The Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism, Fantasy, and the History of Comic Book Heroines by Mike Madrid.

“…Even as it delivers its clear-eyed critique of the way mainstream superhero comics have alternately eroticized or deified female characters, The Supergirls gleefully celebrates the medium itself, in all its goofy, glorious excess.” — NPR

“The Supergirls is a long overdue tribute to the fabulous fighting females whose beauty and bravery brighten the pages of your favorite comics.” — Stan Lee

  • 2 copies of 3 Dead Princes: An Anarchist Fairy Tale by Danbert Nobacon.

“Even as an adult reader, the story is interesting and intelligent enough for you to find it worth your while.” — Graham Storrs

  • 2 copies of Dirk Quigby’s Guide to the Afterlife: All You Need to Know to Choose the Right Heaven Plus a Five-Star Rating System for Music, Food, Drink, and Accommodations by E. E. King

“Impish and delightful—a hilarious Zagat’s Guide to Heaven!”—Ray Bradbury

  • 2 sets of Snotty Saves the Day: The History of Arcadia and Lily the Silent: The History of Arcadia. Signed by Tod Davies

“Dressed up with footnotes, scholarly introductions and a bibliography, as well as lovely line drawings by Gary Zaboly, Snotty’s story seeks to prove that fairy tales rank with quantum mechanics in their ability to establish parallel worlds.”—Publishers Weekly

  • Auction: One set of Snotty Saves the Day: The History of Arcadia and Lily the Silent: The History of Arcadia. Signed by Tod Davies.  Also comes with an adorable teddy bear.

Who doesn’t want an adorable teddy bear with an adorable t-shirt on?  To bid on him and his friends, the books, click here.

From AudioGo:

  • A copy of The J. R. R. Tolkien Collection (BBC Dramatization) by J. R. R. Tolkien.

I’ll be honest with you, this set is cool enough that I considered stealing it rather than putting it in the fundraiser. True story.

  • A set of Immobility by Brian EvensonDreadtime Stories: Volume One, and Dreadtime Stories: Volume Two.  All narrated by Malcolm McDowell.

“Evenson is stunning, a postapocalyptic Dashiell Hammett, in this blistering tale. I read Immobility from cover to cover without stirring from my chair, and I imagine most readers will share that fate.” – Jesse Ball, Plimpton Prize–winning author of The Curfew

  • A copy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: The Complete BBC Radio Series by Douglas Adams

“It’s not just that these are even better than the novels, The Guide, originally conceived as a radio show, still works best in its original medium. All these discs are worth listening to, especially if you have a long commute. Adams’ life was too short, but he left us with enough funny, startling, and original ideas for several lifetimes.” – Tom Marcinko

  • 2 sets of Batman: The Lazarus Syndrome: A BBC Full-Cast Radio Drama and  Superman: On Trial: A BBC Full-Cast Radio Drama by Dirk Maggs

“An interesting, if slightly quirky, audio play about The Dark Knight, as it is the villain’s motivation that drives the tale.” – Tim Knight, Hero Press

“An amusing audio play, well worth the time.” – Brendan’s Reviews

  • A set of Sherlock Holmes: The Rediscovered Railway Mysteries: and Other Stories by John Taylor and The Adventures of Sexton Blake: Full-Cast BBC Radio Dramatization by Dirk Maggs

I’ve talked on the blog before about how much I loved this production of Sexton Blake. Not only can you get this hard-to-come-by BBC production here, but the Sherlock Holmes audiobook is read by Benedict Cumberbatch himself. As such, it’s very much worth your time….

  • Auction: A set of Sherlock Holmes: The Rediscovered Railway Mysteries: and Other Stories by John Taylor and The Adventures of Sexton Blake: Full-Cast BBC Radio Dramatization by Dirk Maggs

Make your ear holes happy by bidding on this lovely prize over here.

  • A copy of Doctor Who: The New Adventures: Two Exclusive Audio Adventures Starring the Eleventh Doctor

Come on.  It’s Doctor Who.  Do I really have to tell you?  By donating just $10 to the team page, you will have a chance to win an audio recording of two episodes of Doctor Who that have never aired on TV.  I think that’s worth it, don’t you?

  • Auction: A set of Doctor Who: The Lost TV Episodes: Collection 2: 1965-1966 and Doctor Who: The New Adventures: Two Exclusive Audio Adventures Starring the Eleventh Doctor.

“DOCTOR WHO – THE LOST TV EPISODES (COLLECTION TWO: 1965-1966) is, like the first collection, a remarkable anthology that demonstrates the enduring quality of the series in delivering agreeable stories for all generations both past, present and future.” –Eye of Horus

That’s right.  Multiple lost-to-television episodes of Doctor Who, all for your listening pleasure, if you bid on our auction over here.

Signed Books from Del Rey

This is a Worldbuilders Blog.

This year, fabulous fantasy publisher Del Rey has joined Worldbuilders as a sponsor, sending us a slew of beautiful books.

Not only are these books lovely, but every single one of them is signed (or bookplated) by the authors themselves.

Because people seem to be responding well to the auctions we’ve posted up so far, we’re going to be doing putting a few of these books up for auction too. So if you look at any of these books and simply NEED to have it. Or if you see something that would make the perfect Christmas present, you can head right over to e-bay and bid on it.

Of course, you can also win the books by donating directly to Heifer International over on the Worldbuilder’s team page. Remember, for every $10 you donate over there, you have a chance to win these books and many, many more.

Ready? Here we go…

  • A hardcover set of The Sword of Shannara Trilogy and The High Druid of Shannara Trilogy. Both signed by Terry Brooks.

These were some of the very first novels I read back when I was 11 or 12. They made a big impression on me, and I remember crying at one particularly dramatic point….

Also, I feel obliged to mention that each of these hefty hardcovers is a trilogy in itself. They’re tomes. You’ve got a really incredible amount of book here…

“If Harry Potter has given you a thirst for fantasy and you have not discovered the magic of Terry Brooks, you are in for a treat.” – Rocky Mountain News

  • 8 hardcover copies of The Dark Legacy of Shannara: Wards of Faerie. Signed by Terry Brooks.

Did I mention that I did an interview with Terry Brooks? I did. Unsurprisingly, it ended up being almost 10,000 words long.

That’s not a joke. We ended up breaking it into four pieces. The first one is over here.

“[Brooks’s] Shannara series is a grand example of the best of the best in the genre.” – The Washington Examiner

  • Auction: A hardcover set of The Sword of Shannara Trilogy, The High Druid of Shannara Trilogy and Wards of Faerie: The Dark Legacy of Shannara. Signed by Terry Brooks.

Terry Brooks Shannara hardcovers

If you want to see more pictures, or bid on these lovely books, the auction is over here.

  • 8 sets of The Dreaming Void, The Temporal Void, and The Evolutionary Void. Signed by Peter F. Hamilton.

“A real spellbinder from a master storyteller… dozens of scenarios, a surprisingly well-delineated cast of thousands, plotting enough to delight the most Machiavellian of readers.” – Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

  • 8 paperback sets of Blackout and All Clear. Signed by Connie Willis.

“[Willis’s] re-creation of wartime England is meticulous, energetic and exhaustive.”—The Wall Street Journal

  • Auction: A paperback set of Blackout and All Clear.  Signed by Connie Willis.

Auction is over here.

And here’s a copy for auction too…

  • Auction: A hardcover copy of A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 5).  Signed by George R.R. Martin.

That’s right Martin’s signature can be yours for the low-low price of whatever the other guy is willing to let it go for. Bidding happens over here.

  • 8 paperback sets of The Warded Man and The Desert Spear by Peter V. Brett. Each with signed bookplate from the author.

I’m terribly fond of Peter V. Brett. Not only has he been a proud supporter of Worldbuilders right from the very beginning, but I really love his books.

If that weren’t enough, more recently, he masterminded something brilliant. When he learned that a bunch of authors attending ConFusion in Detroit were all gamers, he brought us all together and set up a game of AD&D.

And he taped it. You can see the results over here.

“[The Desert Spear] is sure to leave fans on tenterhooks waiting for the last installment.” – Publishers Weekly

“I hesitate to say, “if you like the works of x, y, or z, then give The Steel Remains a try,” because really it’s pretty much unlike anything else, and that’s why you should give it a try.” – Joe Abercrombie

  • Auction: A paperback set of The Steel Remains and The Cold Commands.  Signed by Richard K. Morgan.

If you’d like to bid on this set of signed books, click here.

  • 8 first-edition omnibus copies of In His Majesty’s Service.  Signed by Naomi Novik.

I met Naomi when years ago, back when I was newly published. She was really nice to me, even though I was a dewy-eyed newbie in the publishing world, and she was a Pretty Big Deal, having been published a whole year longer than me.

More recently, she agreed to be a guest on the fourth episode of StoryBoard, where we got together, talked about our gaming roots, and were pretty much huge geeks.

“A new writer is soaring on the wings of a dragon.” – The New York Times

  • Auction: A first-edition omnibus of In His Majesty’s Service. Signed by Naomi Novik.

If you want more detailed pictures showing you how Naomi’s signature is way cooler than mine, or if you’d just like to bid on her book, the auction is right over here.

Okay. Today we’ve got stuff up for auction that, doesn’t really fit into any of the other blogs.

Among other things, we’ve got limited edition art from Neil Gaiman and Vincent Chong, signed bookplates from Pratchett and Robert Jordan, and the Arkenstone.

Yeah. Seriously. The Arkenstone.

The folks at Badali Jewelry, the folks that created the Eolian’s talent pipes for me, have been officially licensed by Middle-earth Enterprises to create a replica of the Arkenstone of Thrain.

Your Akenstone replica is made of fine K9 Crystal treated with an Aurora Borealis plating to give the stone a magical glow. The stone is nestled on a black velvet pillow inside a Dwarven crafted chest. The runes on the outside of the chest read Arkenstone, written in the same Dwarvish runes found on Thorin’s Map.

Many thanks to Badali Jewelry for this cool donation.

You can bid on this Arkenstone replica here.
