The Curious Case of Anton Strout

Those of you who have been following my blog for a while know about my ongoing antagonistic relationship with Anton Strout.

He is the Moriarty to my Holmes. Though that might be overstating things a bit. Maybe he’s more like the Magneto to my….

No. I don’t want him being Magneto, either. He can be…. Emma Frost. He’s the Emma Frost to my Jean-Luc Picard.

Wait. Nevermind any of that. This analogy just isn’t working out.

Suffice to say that Anton and I have had a long-standing rivalry that I keep interesting by occasionally trying to have him killed.

Now, years into our comfortable relationship, Anton has thrown me a serious curveball.

You see, despite our ongoing relationship, Anton has always been cool about helping out with Worldbuilders, the charity I run every year to raise money for  Heifer International. Over the years, Anton has helped spread the word about Worldbuilders, donated signed books to the cause, and even auctioned off a read-and-critique in support of the charity.

But now he’s taken things to a whole new level.

You see, Anton has a new book coming out in about a month’s time. It’s called Alchemystic:

Now when someone has a new book coming out, there’s a bunch of stuff they can do to promote it. They can get bookmarks printed to give away at conventions. They can buy ad space in a magazine. They can do prizes or giveaways on their blog.

But a couple months ago, Anton approached me with a different sort of an idea.

The conversation went something like this:

Anton: So I’ve got a book coming out at the end of September….

Me: Curse you, Strout. Curse you and your vile ability to meet your deadlines….

Anton: It’s a new series. The Spellmason Chronicles.

Me: Yes. My spies have reported it to me. One of the main characters is a gargoyle, isn’t it?

Anton: I was thinking that for every copy of the book that gets pre-ordered. I’d donate a dollar to Worldbuilders.

Me: …

Anton: I talked to the PR people at Penguin, and they’ve said that for the first 1500 books, they’ll kick in a dollar, too.

Me:

Anton: So… for the first 1500 books, we’ll donate 2 bucks for every pre-order.

Me: …

Anton: Are you still there?

Me: Are you serious?

Anton: Yeah. I was thinking about a bunch of different things I could do to promote the book, but this seemed like a better way to spend the money. This way, I get the word out about Alchemystic, but the money can do some good in people’s lives, too.

Me: Seriously?

Anton: And it will act as kind of a nice prologue to this year’s fundraiser too, remind people that Worldbuilders is coming up in a couple of months.

Me:

It’s not often that I’m caught without something to say. But it does happen.

*     *     *

In all seriousness, folks. This is an unprecedentedly generous thing that Anton is offering to do. It says a lot about Penguin too, that they’re willing to back his play like this and offer matching money.

Not only does Worldbuilders stand to make some money here, but if this goes well, I hope other authors might consider doing something similar to promote their books in the future.

In my opinion, it would be really great if Anton sold a bunch of books. Like, a crazy amount of books. So many books that other publishers were startled by the number. So many books that folks took notice of this as a viable advertizing solution.

In my opinion, a donation to Worldbuilders beats the hell out of spending money on refrigerator magnets or ad space. And honestly, I’m ashamed that Anton figured that out before I did.

Curse you, Strout.

So. Today I called the local bookstore and ordered my copy of Alchemistic. That’s one copy.

Care to join me?

[Edit – In response to a question asked in the comments below: Yes. The offer is also good for Kindle and Nook versions of the book.]

Coolness….

So I’m up in the north woods of Wisconsin right now. One of the few places on earth without cell phone coverage or easy wifi access.

I was hoping to post up a different blog today containing some cool news, but due to the fact that I’m working on a netbook and using using borrowed wifi right now, I think I’m going to have to postpone that until Monday.

Instead, today I’m going to do two things:

1. Let y’all know that we have finally settled on a venue for my upcoming Reading and Signing in Chicago.

August 30, 2012 at 7PM
Reading, Q&A, and Signing
The BookMarket Bookstore
2651 Navy Blvd.
Glen Town Center, Glenview, Il 60026
Facebook Event

And before you start to quibble, I know that Glenview isn’t *technically* Chicago. But it’s pretty much Chicago.

Most importantly, it’s got enough space to comfortably hold everyone that might show up to the event. It’s no good me doing a reading and Q&A if half the people that show up have to stand out in the parking lot because the store can’t hold everyone…

So…. yeah. I’ll be there. You should be there too. I might read a new story nobody has ever heard before….

2. Here’s something awesome that a friend made me recently. I just had to share it.

(Click to Embiggen.)

How cool is that?

I have awesome friends….

Y’know. Over the years, a lot of people have given me a lot of cool stuff. Would y’all be interested in seeing it if I posted pictures up here on the blog? It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for some time….

If nothing else, posting pics of those things might help tide y’all over until I can finish wrangling the results of the photo contest. (Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about that.)

What do you think?

Upcoming Events

I’m doing to be doing some traveling in the next couple weeks. (I’ll be in Indianapolis, Chicago, and Seattle.) I figured I’d pass along my schedule so y’all are properly clued-in and can stop by my events if you want to.

Also, if y’all happen to know someone who might be interested in hitting one of these events, you’d be doing be a great favor to me if you passed this info along.

There are few things I hate more than coming back from a city where I just did a couple of events, (let’s pick Seattle, just as an example) then coming home, looking on my facebook wall, and seeing that someone has written, “When are you coming to Seattle??!!1! :)”

Also, for those of you that can’t make it to one of these events, I’m going to be stopping by The Signed Page while I’m out in Seattle. So if you’re dying for a signed book, you can order one from them and they’ll ship it out to you no matter where you live.

Okay. On to the events:

*INDIANAPOLIS EVENTS*

  • Reading and Signing at Indianapolis Central Library.

Thursday, August 16 – 7:00 pm
Central Library
40 E. St Clair St.
Indianapolis, IN 46204

Facebook Event

Over the years I’ve really come to appreciate having a nice space to do a reading, and this library is a great venue. It’s got lovely auditorium seating, and a great AV setup, which means I can possibly do a storytime-style reading of The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle for the whole audience.

Books will be available for sale on site, thanks to the lovely folks at Big Hat Books.  And after my reading/Q&A I’ll be signing books until everyone’s happy or they throw us out of the library.

I’m mostly hitting Gencon as a geek this year, hanging out with friends and playing games. If I’m lucky, maybe I’ll be able to sweet talk my way into true dungeon, which I’ve always wanted to try but never managed to play.

Aside from my personal geekery, I have a few panels, a reading and a signing. (See below).

At other times, I’ll just be lurking around the show. If you’re hoping to run into me, your odds are much better at places like Badali Jewlery (Booth 530) and Geek Chic (Booth 1811).

Also, I’ll be hanging around the Game Salute (Booth 1033) where they’ll be selling signed copies of my books. If you swing by on Saturday between 1:00 and 2:00, I’ll personalize a copy for you if you’d like.

Thursday, August 16 – 1 PM
Room 244
Panel: Painting With Words

Thursday, August 16 – 2-3 pm
Room 244
Panel: Make ‘Em Laugh

Thursday,  August 16 – 4-5 pm
Room 244
Reading with Elizabeth Vaughn

Friday, August 17 – 1-2 pm
Signing at the autograph tables.

Saturday, August 18 – 1-2 pm
Signing at booth #1033.

*CHICAGO EVENTS*

  • Reading and Signing at Northwestern University

Thursday, August 30 – 7:00 pm
Reading, Signing and Q&A

[Edit: We now know where the signing is!

Current location:
The BookMarket Bookstore
2651 Navy Blvd.
Glen Town Center, Glenview, Il 60026]

Here’s the thing, we know I’ll be doing a signing on August 30th at 7:00 PM.

But we’re not quite sure where it’s going to be yet. We’re hoping it will be in the Thorne Auditorium at Northwestern University, but we don’t have  confirmation on that yet. If we can’t get the auditorium, we’ll be doing it in an alternate venue.

As soon as we know for certain, we’ll post up the information here and on the Tour Page.

I’ll be bumming around Worldcon with my whole entourage, (Sarah, Oot, and a couple of my lovely assistants as well.) I heard a rumor that we might even be dressing up on one of the days. But that was probably just a lie….

Thursday, August 30- 4:30-6:00 pm
Autograph Session 1
With Anne Lyle, George R. R. Martin, Jean Johnson, Lawrence M. Schoen, Lillian Cauldwell, and Maurine Starkey

Friday, August 31 – 12-1:30 pm
Panel: Beyond the First Two Pages.

Saturday September 1, 11:30 am-12:00 pm
Reading Room: Addams

*SEATTLE EVENTS*

  • Kris and Scott’s Scott and Kris Show Live!

Sunday, September 2 – 6:30pm doors open, 8:00pm show
The Triple Door
216 Union Street
Seattle, WA 98101

I think this show is going to be a good time. Scott (of PVP) and Kris (of Chainsawsuit) are doing a pair of shows over PAX weekend, and they’ve invited me to be part of the festivities on Sunday.

Want more details? Listen to the dynamic duo themselves….

I think I’m going to need some caffeine in my system to keep up with these guys.

If this looks like your kinda thing, you can buy tickets here.

  • Reading and Signing at the University Book Store

Monday, September 3 – 7:00 pm
University Book Store
4326 University Way NE
Seattle, Washington 98105
Facebook Event

The last time I did a signing in Seattle was about a year and a half ago, and so many people showed up that I didn’t leave the store until nearly 3:00 AM.

This time, since we’re not doing the event the same night as my book release, I think we’ll have a much more modest crowd. That will be nice, as it means most folks will get to sit in chairs, and I’ll have more time to just hang out with people and chat while I’m signing books.

That’s all we’ve got through the end of September, folks.

Share and Enjoy,

pat

The Story Board – Episode #1

For those of you who missed it live, here’s the first episode of the The Story Board.

All in all, it went fairly well. Most importantly, we avoided any major catastrophes.

That’s always my worry when doing something like this for the first time, that the technical end of things will go up in a huge conflagration of suck.

Luckily, I managed to hold everything together through a sheer effort of will. You might think I’m exaggerating my own importance here, but I’m not. I know this because about 8 minutes after we finished the show, just when I started to relax, my browser crashed so hard that I had to reboot the computer.

Still, I’m counting it as a win. And now that I have half a clue, the next show will be even better.

While we’re on the subject, there were a few show related comments/questions that caught my eye, so I figured I’d address them here:

  • “Pat, do you really have a whole shelf full of just your own books in your house?”

Um. Yes. More than one shelf full, actually. Don’t question my lifestyle.

But what you see in the video isn’t my house, it’s the writer’s equivalent of my Batcave.

The books you see there are some of the inventory for our online store, The Tinker’s Packs, where we sell signed books, posters, t-shirts, and other stuff to support my charity, Worldbuilders.

  • “Jim Butcher looks like he’s gonna go hunt a bear.”

Yes he does. Then again, Jim Butcher *always* looks like he’s going to go hunt a bear.

  • “This is the internet. There is no need to artificially constrain ones language or time spent. If you all felt like you could have spoken (interestingly to you) on the subject for 30-60 more minutes, i’m sure quite a few viewers would have enjoyed that, and the rest could just leave when they felt they had seen/heard enough.  I could easily have listened for another 30 minutes.”

Yeah. I know.

The problem is, at some point, any discussion gets unwieldy. Not many folks would like to watch, say, a rambly 5 hour conversation about urban fantasy. Or storytelling in comics. Or just about anything, really.

Ultimately, I’d rather have a nice, lively discussion that leaves people wanting more, rather than have a long, rambling conversation where people get bored.

Still, you’re not the only person who wanted more. And the truth is, we all had more to say….

So how about this, I’ll talk to the folks at G&S and see if after our hour-long show, we could continue the discussion in a more informal way. Maybe call it Story Board: After Hours. In that piece of the show, the folks that want to stick around can continue to chat about the subject in a more relaxed way. By which I mean we’ll cuss more and tell inappropriate jokes….

What do you think? Sound like a good plan?

  • “Who are all these other people?  What’s going on?”

You are on the internet, sir. Welcome. At the moment, you seem to be heartily confused. Bravo.

  • “Pat and Jim: You both seem to know a good deal about Fae/ The Faen realm. Did you obtain your knowledge through experience? Research? An outside resource?”

Um…. Pass.

  • “I’m embarrassed to admit I didn’t know who Emma Bull was until after this show. Since then I’ve picked up a copy of Bone Dance. I’m only halfway through and I can see why it won all those awards. I’ll admit I mostly showed up to see Butcher, but I left wanting to read Bull. Are you planning on having that sort of line up every time? Because that would be cool.”

Curses, you’ve uncovered my nefarious scheme.

Yes. My plan is to bring in an interesting mix of guests for each show. My hope is that no matter who you show up to watch, you’ll leave with the names of a few authors and books you’d never heard of before….

  • “Are you ever going to get on Twitter, Pat?”

Someday. But not today.

  • “You and your guests recommended a bunch of books at the end of the show. Is there a list of them somewhere?”

Yup. Over here on the Geek and Sundry forum for The Story Board.

  • “What are your future shows going to be about? And what writers are you going to bring in?”

Well that’s the real question, isn’t it?

I’ve got some plans already, and I’m talking to a few authors I know. But at this point, I’m still open to suggestions.

But today I’m going to break with tradition a little and ask you NOT make your suggestions here. In fact, I’m turning off the comments on the blog today.

Instead, if you have a burning desire to give us your two cent’s worth, I ask that you do it on the Story Board forum over at Geek and Sundry. It will be much easier for me to keep track of things over there.

Plus, if you post over there the G&S powers-that-be will see what you have to say, too.

See you later space cowboys….

Showtime

Okay folks. It took some doing, but I’ve finally got everything lined up for the first episode of my show on Geek and Sundry.

What’s that? You want to know what the name of the show is? The name we picked from thousands of suggestions?

After a lot of deliberation, we settled on The Story Board.

We’ve got a logo and everything.

It’s got Latin in it, so you know we’re all kinds of posh.

Our first show is going to be about Urban Fantasy and our guests are Emma Bull, Jim Butcher, and Diana Rowland.

Jim will be joining us from the deep woods, where he is tucked away, LARPing. He’s said he’s not responsible if a sudden zombie invasion erupts while he’s online. I said that sounds perfectly reasonable….

If you want to watch the show live, it’s tonight, August 7th, at 8:00 PM Pacific Time.

I’ll be putting up a link on my Google+ account when we launch.

And yes. I know that time is different than what I said on the blog before. That’s because I was wrong on the blog before. This is the right time. 8:00 Pacific.

If you can’t catch it live, rest assured we’ll be posting up the footage on youtube before too long.

You know what the weirdest thing about all of this is? I can’t get the opening theme from the Muppet Show out of my head….

It’s going to take an extreme effort for me *not* to sing that when we start the show tonight…

Foreshadowing….

We’re getting close to the launch of my show.

How close? So close that I’ve settled on a title. Yeah. Pretty crazy, huh?

We’re going to have a logo and everything. This makes me feel very professional. Not at all like the sort of person who barely managed to pick the name for his show less that a week before it goes live….

When is the show? Why I’m glad you asked. It’s going to be the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 Pacific time.

That means this first show is going to be Tuesday, August 7th. 7:00 PM Pacific time.

Just so you know. You’ll be able to watch the show two different ways.

The first way is to watch it happening live over on Google+.

To do that, you’ll need to start a G+ profile, of course. And it wouldn’t hurt to add my profile, either.

I’ll post the link to the live show, and you’ll all be able to watch our premiere episode launch like the majestic Zeppelin that it is. Imagine, you’ll be able to tell your grandchildren you were there to see it sail gracefully into the heavens, held aloft by the mysteries of the luminiferous aethers.

Or… well… you’ll see it do the other thing. Which you have to admit will still be pretty interesting.

For those of you that can’t catch it live, rest assured we’ll be posting it up on youtube afterward. No worries there.

In the meantime, might I interest you in my current favorite show? It’s another one from Geek and Sundry called Written By A Kid.

Keep in mind that’s this is the THIRD episode of the show. If you haven’t already caught the first one, you’re missing out on so many cool things that I’m surprised you’re still alive.

And for you Goths out there, here’s episode two…

Yeah. Go watch them. You can thank me later.
