Showtime

Okay folks. It took some doing, but I’ve finally got everything lined up for the first episode of my show on Geek and Sundry.

What’s that? You want to know what the name of the show is? The name we picked from thousands of suggestions?

After a lot of deliberation, we settled on The Story Board.

We’ve got a logo and everything.

It’s got Latin in it, so you know we’re all kinds of posh.

Our first show is going to be about Urban Fantasy and our guests are Emma Bull, Jim Butcher, and Diana Rowland.

Jim will be joining us from the deep woods, where he is tucked away, LARPing. He’s said he’s not responsible if a sudden zombie invasion erupts while he’s online. I said that sounds perfectly reasonable….

If you want to watch the show live, it’s tonight, August 7th, at 8:00 PM Pacific Time.

I’ll be putting up a link on my Google+ account when we launch.

And yes. I know that time is different than what I said on the blog before. That’s because I was wrong on the blog before. This is the right time. 8:00 Pacific.

If you can’t catch it live, rest assured we’ll be posting up the footage on youtube before too long.

You know what the weirdest thing about all of this is? I can’t get the opening theme from the Muppet Show out of my head….

It’s going to take an extreme effort for me *not* to sing that when we start the show tonight…

She’s right. Proves it’s an awesome name.

Give in to temptation. Sing your opening theme song!

(Don’t you know how many people would tune in *just* to hear you sing like a Muppet?)

    • Posted August 7, 2012 at 7:44 AM | Permalink

Oh man. I don’t know if I want to think about that too much. That’s kind of a terrifying thought….

      • Posted August 7, 2012 at 7:58 AM | Permalink

        Sing it!!! Sing it!!!

Pretty please with a cherry on top? You have a lovely voice everyone wants you to sing the theme song!

Or don’t sing it. I mean I want to convey enthusiasm without being overly demanding.

But we’d be really excited if you sang it.

Or I would. I guess I don’t speak for everyone. And I am not royalty.

I will definitely tune in either way.

Awesome! I can’t wait to watch. One question though–I am not fully up to date with Dresden. Will you guys be attempting to avoid spoilers, or not?

    • Howland
      Posted August 7, 2012 at 12:37 PM | Permalink

I’m replying to this, because its a great question. If you were talking about a series that I was up to date on, like Kingkiller, I would want you to talk dissect them, but I have only read about six or seven Dresden books (I only read a couple a year), so I’m thinking I would not want any spoilers.

I imagine it will be this way with every author – Do you talk about the details or assume that the viewer has not yet read them?

      • Noodles
        Posted August 7, 2012 at 4:36 PM | Permalink

I would prefer them getting into details, as long as it doesn’t spoil a large plot-line within the story. For example, using a character as an example would be great, as long as we don’t find out that they die later, or get dismembered, discombobulated, etc :)

You singing the Muppet show song might be too much awesome. Enough to break the internet. I have always said the world is better with Muppets and the new movie made me smile for days, but you go too far sir. With the first chapter of Cold Days out in the open today was already pretty awesome. Lets not be greedy.

This strikes me as an excellent opportunity to attempt to tease some spoilers out of Butcher about Cold Days. Or maybe even a guesstimated release date for it, since Penguin is being so tight-lipped. Probably on purpose, to be mean.

Oh! Or maybe a Kvothe/Harry Dresden crossover? Yes? Yes???

What made you pick “Story Board”? It’s not bad or anything, but what made you pick it over some of the more clever suggestions?

    • Little My
      Posted August 7, 2012 at 7:29 PM | Permalink

Well, it’s pithy, memorable, and can be taken to mean that there will be several people speaking authoritatively about stories, even if it’s not its typical meaning. So it’s got truth in advertising too. There were a ton of clever suggestions, but I bet there were lots of criteria besides cleverness.

(oops, I just made an unsolicited response to a question directed at Pat. So he may have other reasons for choosing it, but IMO these were some reasons someone might have chosen it over some of the other splendiferous puns on offer.)

That was awesome! I thought the Hangout went great. Jim Butcher is really kinda quiet I noticed, but everytime he had something to say I thought it was interesting, he has a very realistic perspective. (IMO)

I’d never read the other two authors work, but they were so friendly.
And now I’m totally going to have to read that Tim Power’s book you mentioned….that sounds….freakin’ awesome. I’m really not a big fan of Urban Fantasy, so it was definitely interesting to see where they draw ideas from and what Authors of the genre think about writing in it.

    Can’t wait for next month!

Oh yah…and I liked how you had a shitload of book copies behind you, LOL, might sound stupid but I thought it “set the scene” and went well with the Title Page.

On the topic of sex in urban fantasy vs. in epic fantasy how much do you think the lack of sex in epic is due the fact that tolkien didn’t do it?

    • IvoryDoom
      Posted August 8, 2012 at 12:01 PM | Permalink

Maybe I’m reading the more screwed up Epic Fantasy, but most of the ones I read have sex in them. I actually thought KKC was one of the series I’d read that had decent sexuality. It’s one of the reasons actually I enjoyed the series a lot more than others I’d read. I literally thought “YAY, people are actually consenting!”

I think it’s pretty weird adults have a problem with this sort of thing in novels. I mean, considering, as adults, we probably have sex and the over use of sex in TV and Movies as plot devices seems like it SHOULD be desensitising that sort of thing. I dont know, maybe its a mentality from another generation. *shrug*

Anyway, I always thought the sex in Epic Fantasy is just usually way more messed up then in Urban Fantasies. I feel like I rarely read an Epic Fantasy targeted at adults where we get a decent love story minus rapists. Unless I’m reading smut…which I actually count as it’s own dysfunctional genre. :/ I guess SOT had a decent love story intertwined, but like I said…WTF with the raping?

Hi Pat – I watched the show on youtube. Thank you, it was entertaining and thought provoking. I wonder if Dhalgren by Samuel R Delaney could be considered Urban Fantasy? If I remember correctly the main character has sex with a tree in the opening chapter.
