Okay folks. It took some doing, but I’ve finally got everything lined up for the first episode of my show on Geek and Sundry.
What’s that? You want to know what the name of the show is? The name we picked from thousands of suggestions?
After a lot of deliberation, we settled on The Story Board.
We’ve got a logo and everything.
It’s got Latin in it, so you know we’re all kinds of posh.
Our first show is going to be about Urban Fantasy and our guests are Emma Bull, Jim Butcher, and Diana Rowland.
Jim will be joining us from the deep woods, where he is tucked away, LARPing. He’s said he’s not responsible if a sudden zombie invasion erupts while he’s online. I said that sounds perfectly reasonable….
If you want to watch the show live, it’s tonight, August 7th, at 8:00 PM Pacific Time.
I’ll be putting up a link on my Google+ account when we launch.
And yes. I know that time is different than what I said on the blog before. That’s because I was wrong on the blog before. This is the right time. 8:00 Pacific.
If you can’t catch it live, rest assured we’ll be posting up the footage on youtube before too long.
You know what the weirdest thing about all of this is? I can’t get the opening theme from the Muppet Show out of my head….
It’s going to take an extreme effort for me *not* to sing that when we start the show tonight…

Non vedo l’ora! I’m positive this is going to be fun!
You and Butcher together? I wonder if you’re having the same nerdgasm I am right now.
Wonder if you’re going to invite any indie authors on…*cough, cough*
“It’s time to play the music. It’s time to light the lights….”
My wife has The Muppet Show on DVD. That theme song haunts my dreams.
Why do we always come here? I guess we’ll never know…
I keed.
I will now be watching the OK Go version of the Muppet theme on repeat for the rest of the day…

I’m so excited!
Incidentally, this is the name of a comic book publication at our school.
Hi KX. I know who you are. Do you know who I am? (don’t actually say my name)
She’s right. Proves it’s an awesome name.
That’s about what… 5 am over here in Amsterdam…. ouch… Aaah well, it’s all for a good cause. This is gonna be fun!
Thanks for figuring that out for me! XD
fantastic. I just started Jim’s Dresden Files series. (I saw your review of Storm Front on GoodReads and had to try it out). So far they are great.
Give in to temptation. Sing your opening theme song!
(Don’t you know how many people would tune in *just* to hear you sing like a Muppet?)
Oh man. I don’t know if I want to think about that too much. That’s kind of a terrifying thought….
Sing it!!! Sing it!!!
Pretty please with a cherry on top? You have a lovely voice everyone wants you to sing the theme song!
Or don’t sing it. I mean I want to convey enthusiasm without being overly demanding.
But we’d be really excited if you sang it.
Or I would. I guess I don’t speak for everyone. And I am not royalty.
I will definitely tune in either way.
I’m dumb when it comes to timezones. Is the show like 2 and a half hours from now?
8:00 PM Pacific time
9:00 PM Mountain time
10:00 PM Central time
11:00 PM Eastern time
PDT is UTC-7 (GMT-7)
05:00 CEST (Central European Summer Time)
08/08/12 12:30pm CST, 12:00pm AEST
Maybe you could sing the Swedish Chef song!
Bork, bork, bork!
If possible, maybe have it sung between the three of you.
Awesome! I can’t wait to watch. One question though–I am not fully up to date with Dresden. Will you guys be attempting to avoid spoilers, or not?
I’m replying to this, because its a great question. If you were talking about a series that I was up to date on, like Kingkiller, I would want you to talk dissect them, but I have only read about six or seven Dresden books (I only read a couple a year), so I’m thinking I would not want any spoilers.
I imagine it will be this way with every author – Do you talk about the details or assume that the viewer has not yet read them?
I would prefer them getting into details, as long as it doesn’t spoil a large plot-line within the story. For example, using a character as an example would be great, as long as we don’t find out that they die later, or get dismembered, discombobulated, etc :)
I am trying to stay calm here, that was the name I came up with! I am so excited!
Well now I am not sure. Do you count the space between story and board? if not then I guess I wasn’t the first with that suggestion. Oh well good pick anyway.
I look forward to the show.
It counts, even if someone else suggested it, so did you. Great name!
Rothfuss, Butcher, and Sanderson. If you could make this happen I could die happy.
Yes. This.
You singing the Muppet show song might be too much awesome. Enough to break the internet. I have always said the world is better with Muppets and the new movie made me smile for days, but you go too far sir. With the first chapter of Cold Days out in the open today was already pretty awesome. Lets not be greedy.
Duet Rainbow Connection with Butcher! Duet Rainbow Connection with Butcher!
Because that would be awesome.
Looking forward to the show, hope you guys and gal have fun.
You know I’m going to wake up at 5 a.m. to watch it?
And that it’s so going to be bad for my german lessons tomorrow?
The things we do for books…
Baci!
That’s going to interfere with my Olympic watching (which also starts at 8pm PDT, and I go to bed around 9, which limits what I get to see). I may have to catch it on youtube at a later time.
This will be hard. That’s 5 a.m. in my local time zone, but i think i’ll do it anyway….
I, for one, am stoked about the show tonight! 8pm is even better, I’ll have dinner all wrapped up by then….then again, this may merit pizza ordering.
hmmm….
Anyway, Good Luck Tonight!
Now I better go make a Google+ Profile so I can find everything at 8….
This strikes me as an excellent opportunity to attempt to tease some spoilers out of Butcher about Cold Days. Or maybe even a guesstimated release date for it, since Penguin is being so tight-lipped. Probably on purpose, to be mean.
Oh! Or maybe a Kvothe/Harry Dresden crossover? Yes? Yes???
Ugh! It’s way to late for me to watch it live as it would start at 12 am my time! Oh well I’ll just have to watch it on youtube.
What made you pick “Story Board”? It’s not bad or anything, but what made you pick it over some of the more clever suggestions?
Well, it’s pithy, memorable, and can be taken to mean that there will be several people speaking authoritatively about stories, even if it’s not its typical meaning. So it’s got truth in advertising too. There were a ton of clever suggestions, but I bet there were lots of criteria besides cleverness.
(oops, I just made an unsolicited response to a question directed at Pat. So he may have other reasons for choosing it, but IMO these were some reasons someone might have chosen it over some of the other splendiferous puns on offer.)
Just sing! Remember when we all sang together when you came to Portland? It was beautiful.
Trying to help you get that song out of your head:
http://goo.gl/EzgUh
At the very least, you can do the intro
“It’s the Story Board!
With our very special guests
Emma Bull, Jim Butcher, and Diana Rowland!”
And then flap your flippers about. “YEEEEAAAAHHH”
Oh my. You and Butcher? Plus some *new to me* urban fantasy authors? I may be freaking out just a little. Cannot wait!
I’m so excited to watch!
I’m also excited that you picked the name I came up with!!
Ok, fine. I don’t know if I was the first one to comment with it (apparently it was a popular suggestion), but I promise I came up with it before reading any other comments!
Hi, I’m from the future, it’s now 01:32 08/08/2012, and the show rocked!
Sadly that is a lie, I haven’t yet seen the show, just a different time zone. I think staying up until 2am counts as a bit OTT just to watch it…. nahh who am I kidding!
Can’t wait :D
Show just finished. That was great!
I’ll be putting up a link on my Google+ account when we launch.
I really wasn’t paying attention to the time since I figured I’d see the G+ post. :^(
Fantastic show. Made me want to add at least another 3 books to the backlog. Thanks Pat!
That was awesome! I thought the Hangout went great. Jim Butcher is really kinda quiet I noticed, but everytime he had something to say I thought it was interesting, he has a very realistic perspective. (IMO)
I’d never read the other two authors work, but they were so friendly.
And now I’m totally going to have to read that Tim Power’s book you mentioned….that sounds….freakin’ awesome. I’m really not a big fan of Urban Fantasy, so it was definitely interesting to see where they draw ideas from and what Authors of the genre think about writing in it.
Can’t wait for next month!
Oh yah…and I liked how you had a shitload of book copies behind you, LOL, might sound stupid but I thought it “set the scene” and went well with the Title Page.
On the topic of sex in urban fantasy vs. in epic fantasy how much do you think the lack of sex in epic is due the fact that tolkien didn’t do it?
Maybe I’m reading the more screwed up Epic Fantasy, but most of the ones I read have sex in them. I actually thought KKC was one of the series I’d read that had decent sexuality. It’s one of the reasons actually I enjoyed the series a lot more than others I’d read. I literally thought “YAY, people are actually consenting!”
I think it’s pretty weird adults have a problem with this sort of thing in novels. I mean, considering, as adults, we probably have sex and the over use of sex in TV and Movies as plot devices seems like it SHOULD be desensitising that sort of thing. I dont know, maybe its a mentality from another generation. *shrug*
Anyway, I always thought the sex in Epic Fantasy is just usually way more messed up then in Urban Fantasies. I feel like I rarely read an Epic Fantasy targeted at adults where we get a decent love story minus rapists. Unless I’m reading smut…which I actually count as it’s own dysfunctional genre. :/ I guess SOT had a decent love story intertwined, but like I said…WTF with the raping?
Looking forward to see it on Youtube! By the way… will your show get a section on the general geek and sundry website? I have that one bookmarked anyways and it would be another big reason to frequent it regularly :D
Publishers Lunch:
“New York Times bestselling author of The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear, Patrick Rothfuss’s first book in an untitled new fantasy series, again to Daw, in a major deal”… happy dance ensues. Details, please?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52khu_YJAmo
There’s the youtube for those who missed it. I was amused by the bookcase of Pat’s books behind him.
Me too!! I thought it looked great!
For those who need it, C.C. coming soon!
It would be super cool if there was a way you could get Orson Scott Card involved in an episode. Or Neil Gaiman.
Neil Gaiman, yes please!
That hatemonger Orson Scott Card, good god please not. Haven’t you paid attention the the b******i that man has pulled of/ said in the last months?
Granted “Enders Game” was brilliant and is a classic but since then nothing of value has come from Orson Scott Card.
Hey Pat,
Have you ever thought of doing a bobble head of yourself; just thought it would be cool. Especially if is said things; like “What the Fuss?” and “Click to Embiggen”.
If you did this I know I would have to have one. My wife would think I was crazy but I’m sure you understand, the power of the beard is the power of the beard.
Hi Pat – I watched the show on youtube. Thank you, it was entertaining and thought provoking. I wonder if Dhalgren by Samuel R Delaney could be considered Urban Fantasy? If I remember correctly the main character has sex with a tree in the opening chapter.
Will be watching (and waiting) for the next shows. Be well.
“If I remember correctly the main character has sex with a tree in the opening chapter.”
Sentence of the day.
I had a chance to sit down and watch the show last night….Freaking amazing! This was a fantastic idea and I look forward to watching the coming shows. Thank you so much for putting this together, it is like a giant geek fest in my house for an hour. The only thing that could be better would be having you all over for a weekly poker game :)
Awesome show! Was there a specific Tim Powers book you were thinking of? I’d love to check his writing out after that description but never know where to start with an author I haven’t read before.
They specifically mention “The Stress of Her Regard” and “Declare”
but I understand “Declare” is hard to come by…. :(
Sadly, because I really wanted to read it after that!
“Declare” appears to be forthcoming from Harper Collins 2/13 in trade paper ISBN 9780062221384
