Podcasts, Musings, and the Importance of Names

So a while back, I was lucky enough to get to meet Max Temkin.

Odds are, even if you don’t know his name, you know his work. He’s one of the driving forces behind Cards Against Humanity.

A couple months back, he asked if I’d like to do a podcast with him, where we pretty much just talked about whatever we felt like at the moment. I said yes because I enjoy every conversation we have, and an excuse to have a new one every week is too good to pass up.

And if other folks want to listen to it… well… I’m fine with that, too.

So we did it.

The first episode of that podcast is up here: https://unattendedconsequences.simplecast.fm/

[Edit: Hey folks, Amanda here! The podcast is up on iTunes now, so you can subscribe to that here.]

Those of you who are capable of moving your eyes over text and decoding it may notice that the podcast is called Untitled Rothfuss.

This is partly because we don’t know what exactly this podcast is going to turn into. (If anything) Max and I are going to talk about things that interest us in the moment. We don’t have a theme, a narrative arc, an agenda, etc.

And it’s partly because I’m a little obsessive about names. It took me a month to name my first son (who y’all know as Oot). It took me two months to name my second boy (codename: Cutie.)

When I put a name on something, I don’t just want a good name. I don’t even want a great name. I want the Perfect name….

I asked the Worldbuilders Team if they had any ideas, and they were pretty useless (but hilarious):

  • Maximum Patitude
  • We both have three letter names
  • We’re Not Wearing Pants
  • Maxpat
  • Patmax
  • Pat to the Max
  • Pat and Max: The Musical
  • Grammatically Speaking
  • Procrastinators Inc.
  • Not Your Grandmother’s Podcast
  • Your Grandmother’s Podcast
  • Welcome to Valenight Eveningtown
  • Duskparty with Pat & Max
  • Rage Quit with Pat & Max
  • No Regard for Silence
  • Amanda Said We Can’t Use This Title.
  • Phteven, with a PH
  • Once Upon a Podcast
  • NO REGRETS–SERIOUSLY
  • Some Regrets

The terrible thing is that most of those suggestions are actually better than the ones that Max and I came up with on our own. Those include:

  • Two White Guys Talking
  • Literally Literally
  • Destroying Joy
  • Talking about Stuff
  • The End is Nigh
  • The Non-Eponymous Podcast

Okay. I’ll admit I’m a little proud of “Non-Eponymous” because it’s really fun to say.

Anyway, I’ve come to y’all for suggestions for names before, like when I did Storyboard. I’m proud of that name.

So. Here’s a link to our first episode.

What do you think we should call it?

        Either or :)

Those lessons of Elodin’s were without a focused purpose but made students think and question. Which is why it kind of suits it.

On that thinking maybe “Chasing the Wind” would fit too.

I suggested the same below. It’s a truly lovely name, I’ve always wished something more substantive were named that.

Plus in the description you could said-
          Location: everywhere
          About: everything.

          Or something like that.

            Posted June 30, 2015 at 1:12 PM | Permalink

Oh! That description would be cool, it adds more to the geekery of it all. Though you would have to be in the Rothfuss club to understand it entirely. The name still can stand alone though, without having read the book, but if you have its like an inside joke.

    What about just “Musings”?

It can be taken in multiple ways, depending on what you’re covering in any given moment:

    1) You can be A-musing
    2) You can honor the Muse(s) in conversations that involve creativity
    3) You can simply muse (v), i.e. “be absorbed in thought”
    4) Or you can have a muse (n), i.e. “an instance or period of reflection”

    Hello, Pat!

My first suggestion is something I almost don’t want to suggest because I don’t support all the “when’s the next book coming out” crap I see you get. It’s meant to be more of playful jab at all those people.

“Not Writing” or “Not At the Keyboard” or “AFK” – something to that affect – I really like “Pencil’s Down”. Pencil’s Down with Pat Rothfuss and Max Temkin.

But my second suggestion is one that I’ve thought of using myself but I’d much rather see someone else use it with a better shtick…

“At the Moment” – I’ve always liked that as a podcast name. At the Moment with Pat Rothfuss and Max Temkin. “What’s up next At the Moment.” “Don’t miss Patrick Steward with Pat Rothfuss At the Moment.” I just like the way it comes off.

  58. Posted June 30, 2015 at 9:04 AM | Permalink

Okay, now I actually finished listening to the episode so I can comment on it.
I still stick to my suggestion of naming it The Peter Podcast.
    On with it.
My beef with podcasts is that while I do find them so interesting they make me very frustrated. I want to take part in these interesting conversations but I obviously can’t. It kind of messes with my brain too, to the point in which I oince managed to call a podcaster on Skype (on a private call, not special participation type) and, because of how used I was to just listening to them I didn’t answe them when asked a question because I didn’t realize it was an actual conversation that time. Quite awkward.
I loved this episode and I look forward to the next ones (whatever that says about my personality).
In a way I can relate to much of what you two talked about in your lifestyles. Of course I am not even remotely famous. I’m just a 23 year old librarian who works from home, alone, and not known by anyone other than my friends and family. It’s quite interesting though, to see how simillar people can be to each other even though we are all so different. Heh!
Best of luck with the podcast!

  82. Hans
    Posted June 30, 2015 at 11:34 AM | Permalink

Hey Pat, great podcast! Some proposals:

After listening to it, and on the subject your collective musings re: the fight against workification and recapturing the friendships that nourish you from the iron grip of success (spot on, by the way), something simple and obvious might be in order:
    – Max and Pat’s Podcast

But that is kind of dull (on purpose). Here’s some others:
    – (Pat & Max) In Your Ear!
    – Real Life Fantasy
    – Party of Two
    – A Podcast of Whales
    – Two peas in a podcast
    – The Final Ring ;)

Let me know if you need someone to come over unannounced and eat the food in your fridge.
