When Will Book Two Be Out?

I just thought I might as well make a brief, public statement about this as a lot of people have been emailing and asking me about it lately.

*ahem*

The second and third books of the trilogy should be coming out fairly quickly, considering how long they are and the fact that I’m fairly obsessive when it comes to my writing. That means book two should be out about two years from now. Book three will be a year or so after that.

Why so long? / I thought I read somewhere that you already had the second two books written?

The trilogy is already written all the way through to the end, but there is still some editorial work to be done. I want the second one to be at least as good as the first, if not better. That takes time.

I know that on the reader’s side, a year seems like a long time. It always used to piss me off, having to wait for my favorite authors to write new stuff. But now that I’m on the other side I know why it takes so long. There’s a ton of behind-the-scenes work that has to happen: Editing, re-editing, shipping, cover design, printing, layout, more editing. It all takes time.

In order to make the wait marginally less painful, I’m going to be putting up new content on the website in addition to continuing the blogs. Some of the things I’m considering include:

  • Putting up an FAQ.
  • Expanding the clickable sections on the world map.
  • Getting a forum up and running.
  • Explaining in more detail the design of the trouper’s lute in the Music section.
  • Getting the Bestiary up off the ground in the World section.
  • Posting deleted scenes/chapters from book one.
  • Posting teaser chapters from book two.

Which of these sounds best to you? Give it a little discussion in the comments below. Suggestions for other improvements are also welcome….

With love,

pat

I would totally go for deleted scenes. I mean, there’s no downside! You just get more book to read.

As an aspiring writer, the wait allows me to re-read book one and ask more questions (hee hee). Well, fair enough. The most enticing to me: World Map, Beastiary, Lute (all things visual, I guess). But would also like to see a stable Forum. The deleted scenes and teaser chapters I can wait for, because I’m still savoring the first book. And somehow, you are still keeping up your day job? Grin. One suggestion: Apothecary page, if you are so inspired and could find an artist or are one! btw: willow, my foot! A lovely breadth of herbs and their use!

Can I say “all of the above”? I think the Forum idea is great, as it gives us all a place to commiserate until the next book comes out. And I would love some teaser chapters to help tide me over.

Can I put in a plug for no teaser chapters. I try to avoid teaser chapters because they just make the wait unbearable. I’d rather have the whole thing – BAM – all at once. I’m all about the clickable content on the map and the bestiary. And I think the Apothecary page is a great idea too.

Yeah, a forum would pretty much rule.

I want “all of the above” too. :)I guess if I’d had to pick, I’d say, in this order:– The forums (I assume your webmaster knows how to set them up? If not, I have a lot of experience with forums and would be happy to help).– The FAQ (preferably with lots of you talking about the way you write, which I always love to read).– Deleted scenes and book two chapters (in the same order, since it’s basically the same thing: more story content!).

I purchased your book yesterday afternoon. I saw on Barnes and Noble that it was highly recommended and well reviewed. I finished reading it at two o’clock this morning. Bad idea starting it in the middle of the week, wouldn’t you say? That’s what happens with me and an impressive new book, I tend to disappear from life for a few hours while I explore this interesting new place. Anyhow, in response to your blog, I’m wishing I’d waited to read this until closer to the 2nd book release date. I’m now completely invested in this new place and anxiously willing to devour any and all information:) So, short answer, all of the above!

Since you’re asking, I’d love to see more complete maps. For example, where is Newarre? or the Wydeconte Hills? or Trebon? Deleated scenes and teasers from upcoming books are always a wonderful treat, too! FAQ are also great – like an explanation of the calendar cycles and what the names of the days mean.

i thirteenth (just a guess – didn’t count) the idea of the forum. fanboys and girls need a place to kvetch, away from the eyes of the rest of the <>secret<>-reading world.i’m not a writer, but my guess is that deleted scenes are, more often than not, deleted for a reason. then again, plenty of authors release unabridged versions that end up enhancing the story, so…motivated by my own greed and the dismal prospect of waiting a whole year for new material, i am decided. more!i’m with adam on the teasers, though. sometimes just a little is worse than nothing.

I’d love to see deleted scenes. Teaser chapters, not so sure as I’m not overly fond of ‘spoilers’. A section on herbs and their uses, alchemical reactions, use of magic in general would be really cool. More maps and the bestiary would also be a plus.I’m wondering if, like Stephen King’s “The Stand”, you might eventually come out with the full-length version? I mean, what’s another 300 – 400 pages if it gives us some more of this world to explore?

My vote is for teaser chapters. It took my husband 3 weeks to finish this book and he recommended I pick it up for almost a week before I relented and started. I finished in 3 days, neglecting my family and sleep until I finished. I was hoping for mid-year release of #2, but hubby reminded me that publishers like to make sure they have showing on the bestseller lists and time releases accordingly (grrrr). At least I have hope of getting the whole story, unlike some other unmentionable authors. Thanks for a great read!

Definitely deleted scenes. As tycho said its like more book to read. I mean, just because the publisher wanted a shorter book(etc), doesn’t mean the writing is subpar(gasp) or less engaging. And i don’t like spoilers-anyway you have to wait much longer for the whole thing, so too much added suspense just increases the severity of the inevitable nervous breakdown.

As a devoted tolkien geek, I love obscure details about anything involving Middle Earth.Your world has the same pull and I find it deepens the feeling of reality if there are enormous amounts of trivial details. I know not everyone would agree, but if you have any tidbits of weird data, names of streams, the names of the week, months etc. I Love this kind of stuff. So I vote for a Flotsam and Jetsam page of details you have pulled from the books but still have around.tom

AAARRRGGGHHH! It said “A Novel” so i began one of the best journeys of my life, only to become more and more alarmed as i read further, helplessly drawn deeper and deeper into Kvothe’s world, that this was either going to be a cop out ending( which would be criminal) or, (AAARRRGGGHHH) the first book of a series. The latter being the awful truth, I wept, gnashed my teeth and i have now only half a head of hair….Desperate for news of the next book, i turn on my laptop, at 4am,to see if i can discover when i could expect my (almost instantaneous) craving for more, more, more, to be fed…A YEAR….. So, here i am now, no hair, teeth worn to the gums and suffering withdrawal akin to an addict starved of a fix….Yet simultaneously elated and giddy with the knowledge that there WILL be more to come…I love the world you have given us a glimpse into, so new and fresh and intrigueing. I am as helpless as a sweet-eater, hooked at the first taste….yours addictedlyRosie x x

Can I just take this oppurtunity to say WHY?WHY WHY WHY?Ask to ” ‘Why’ what?”, why not just…Oh, I don’t know.I’m impatient.I just finished reading ‘The Name of The Wind’. And I desperately want more book.Kvothe has awesome hair. I cannot stress this fact enough.I’ve recommended it to every person I know who has the capacity to understand the (relatively simple) idea of sympathy. When Bast said “I just want my Reshi back.” I, without thought or realisation, replied “So do I, Bast.”Oops.Away from that, though, I have to say that if book two is rushed in any manner, I’ll be unhappy. I don’t really care if it takes until 2050, to be honest, if the quality is even half as high as book one.Oh, and I can’t thank you enough for the week-long, no-sleep, never-put-it-down read.

It took me 3 sittings to finish “The Name of the Wind”. A friend recommended it to me for a month before I bought it. Now I recommend it to everyone I know, even if I don’t like them. I say things like, “Hey, you’re an idiot, but you should still read this book.” I neglected my family on Thanksgiving to finish this book. I haven’t had the desire to pick up any other book since then, because it’s not the continuation of “The Name of the Wind”. I just read on http:\\www.fantasticfiction.co.uk that the books release date isn’t until April 2009. Insert agony here. I’ll take it all. Give me as much stuff as you’re willing to relinquish to hold me over. Despite my impatient and needy nature, I stil would like to say thank you for writing an amazing piece of literature.

Well…. I’ve already written them. So you won’t have to wait forever for them to come out. They’ll be released on a regular schedule. One per year. You can also expect the second book to be written with the same degree of care and detail as this first one. You know the sophomore slump? When a writer’s second novel is weaker because they’re suddenly forced to write under deadline? I don’t have to worry about that because my next two novels are already good to go.——What a load of BS!

No need to be so rude. When you’ve the time and intelligence to attempt to write your own novel, feel free to give me a call. I’d be happy to proofread it for you. Rothfuss isn’t just a writer. He doesn’t sit around all day writing to make everyone else happy. He does have a life.

Just found your book and bought it. Was looking for book 2 but I see it may NOT come out at all? Damn!
I will not read Book 1 until and if you ever publish Book 2.
So could we please get a realistic update already?

    Thanks

I just noticed your original post about publishing sequels to The Name of the Wind was dated back in 2007. You must have come across some real difficulties. It is now 2013 and no book 3 yet. Any updates on that? I’m glad I didn’t run across these books until 2010. I can imagine how impatient your other readers must be by now. This time frame seems rather ridiculous in length.

I just wanted to apologize for missing the 10-year anniversary of this blog post in which book 3 was going to be available in approximately 3 years.

I admire the fact that you’ve left this thread up and unmodified, and left comments open despite people’s snarkiness :)

I’m starting to think the fact that this “thread” is left up and unmodified, and the comments are left open, is because no-one reads these comments except people who have no power to change anything.

No, we don’t want bestiaries. Go edit the third book.
No, we don’t care about FAQs, because the most frequently asked question is “when is the third book going to be published? Why isn’t it published yet? Why aren’t you editing it, but answering stupid questions you really don’t want to answer? Why can’t you just let go of the book and let us hear the rest of the story!
No, we don’t care about maps. Go edit the third book!
No, f the forum, go write!
Sh*t about the lute, why aren’t you writing?
I’m not interested in books one and two, I have read them, now could I, please, read the third one?
Shipping, cover design, layout, not your problem, you should be writing!
