New Interview: Concurring Opinions.

So last night I had a dream with Neil Gaiman in it. I can’t for the life of me remember the details, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a sex dream. Pretty sure.

What does this mean? Well, it’s probably just because I met him recently, and I’m re-reading Sandman at the moment. But if I dream about him two more times… I’m pretty sure that means he’s my spirit animal. Which wouldn’t be too bad, all things considered.

It’s been a while since I’ve done an interview, but a couple weeks ago a fellow named Dave Hoffman contacted me and asked if I’d like to do a Q & A of a slightly different sort for Concurring Opinions, a legal blog.

He asked a bunch of questions about how the legal system works in my world, some ethics and morality stuff too. And, of course, we chatted about other stuff, writing, teaching, worldbuilding, etc. It was fun, and I got to talk about a lot of things that haven’t come up in other interviews.

Anyway, if you’re interested in hearing me ramble on, the interview is OVER HERE.

Share and Enjoy,

pat

I’m almost speechless. I didn’t think I could think you were cooler, but then you went and made Concurring Opinions entertaining. Holy crap. You even managed to show your smarts when he tried to throw you off with the liquidated damages mumbo-jumbo.You are…triple deluxe super cool.

Giggle-“Pat has a flair for … earthy … language”Did they not tell you ahead of time to be a good boy and speak like a gentleman, Pat? Loved the interview but that <>warning<> will give me giggles for the rest of the day. April 2009 would be Spring not Fall… confusion to the masses!

Pat, I’ve refrained from commenting on your blog for a long time now because, well frankly I don’t do such things often. I picked up the book the month after it came out on such a random whim that I can’t even explain it–and I’ve been pimping it like it was a girl named Sapphire ever since. I actually lost my copy to a horde of kids at the camp I worked at last summer. Somewhere, rich Jewish kids have built a shrine or a golem in your honor. I’m a high school English and Theatre teacher and I’ve watched your star rise with great pride, because to me you were like the little gnome I found under my porch who could do neat things that no one else knew about. So to see you with Gaiman, who I’ve met multiple times and he is amazing in person—he read us bedtime stories at a tiny, tiny little con in TN when Smoke and Mirrors came out–it makes me realize that all the forces in the universe can occasionally bring the cool people who deserve good things together. That being said, I am also convinced that I went to college with a doppleganger of yours and that you and I should totally hang out because that guy turned out to be a douche, and I figure you have to be the real guy I was meant to be friends with in college. So, if you ever find your way to the paradise that is the glorious Paris of the South (Asheville, NC) and you want good discussion, good food and amazing beer, my wife and I would be glad to keep you in our basement. That’s a lie, as I do not have a basement because a public school teacher’s salary is meager enough to afford us a small bungalow sans basement. In all seriousness–thank you for the best new fantasy I’ve read in 15 years and thank you for that amazing beard.

I am reading Sandman for the first time, and I’ve just finished Absolute Volume 1. Wow. And to think, Pat, you are even cooler than Gaiman. Keep it up dude.

Wait… I’m cooler than Gaiman? When did that happen? Chris: I’ll be doing more reccomendations in a couple of days. Steve: Thanks for the invite. Hopefully I’ll make my way down there soon… maybe when the book comes out in paperback. Logan: I am not, in fact, cooler than Gaiman. While I have it on good authority that I currently at triple delux super cool, Gaiman is triple deluxe ULTRA cool. It’s the accent, you see. He gets, like, 15 extra points for that.

Were ‘clusterfuck’ and ‘shite’ the examples of ‘Earthy’ language? And does my writing deserve to be called worse things for misusing inverted commas (I’m looking at you Herr Starr)? After all, grammar is the closest thing to the laws of the English language and misusing symbols (like parenthesis – or dashes) could be deemed illegal in a court of grammatical law. Finally my point: Does experimenting with punctuation/language (or breaking the rules of English) make an author an outlaw or just a bad writer?

Pat: Don’t get your panties in a bunch. You’re not cooler than Gaiman. Like you pointed out, he’s got the accent thing happening, and that trumps your beard. For another thing, he’s Neil-fucking-Gaiman, and you’re … well … <>not<>. Don’t worry. I love you anyway. And that’s all that matters, right?:)

Even though Gaimen is cool—and from England—I still like <>The Name of the Wind<> better than <>Neverwhere<>.Does that make you a cooler person? No. The fact that you’re from Wisconsin, however, does.Being from England is cliché.

Growing up with an attorney for a mother (she used to brag to people that I could read her the <>Wall Street Journal<> by the time I was four and cross-examine by six), I would have to say that lawyers are most definitely today’s arcanists. I remember being so surprised in school when the other kids didn’t know the difference between an implied contract and express contract…yeah. I was a weird kid.*hunkers down with snacks and music to wait until April 2009*

I loved the interview, Pat. The hilight of the whole thing was the comment on Great Expectations. I had to read it over the summer last year for school, and I really think I’m scarred for life. It took until spring for your book to come along and restore my faith in literature. Thanks for that!

Maybe I missed where/when you said this, but why is The Wise Man’s Fear coming out a year later than was anticipated?
