My Readers Are the Best Readers Ever….

… and I will engage in manly fisticuffs with anyone who says otherwise.

When I posted up last Thursday’s blog, I was nervous about what sort of reaction there would be. While news of the book’s delay was hardly secret, I was still worried that people would be pissed.

Anyway, whatever my best hopes were, y’all exceeded them. After reading your kind comments and messages, I’m filled with warm, tingly feelings that I usually reserve for fluffy kittens and Alyson Hannigan.

If you haven’t already, I recommend taking a peek at the comments. A lot of them cracked me up, especially the ones making a case for a Pat Rothfuss action figure.

My love for you is such that were I able, I would give all of you backrubs and cake, no lie.

However, as that is problematical, I will settle for writing you the best goddamn book possible. Seriously. It’s going to be so good the ALA will have to put a label on it warning people of the dangerous levels of awesome contained therin. It’s going to be so good that you will read it and then die.

Well… I might want to scale it back a little from that. But still, when it comes out it would probably be safest to read it with one eye closed, just to be safe.

That’s all for now, but make sure to stop back tomorrow for more news…. In fact, you might want to stay tuned for the rest of the week, I’ll be making more posts than as is my usual.
I’ve got a lot of other announcements to catch up on (happy ones this time) and stories to tell from the convention I just got back from.

Later all,

pat

Thanks for this post, it made me smile. And I’m very glad that your going to write the best goddamn book ever. I have 100% faith that you will! Doesn’t that put on the pressure? haha..Well, I will look forward to the book being a… perhaps, metaphorical cake? That way you won’t have to worry about giving me some, although the cake in the picture did look rather nice-but er-right. Metaphorical cake, is much better then digital. Even more so when it’s an action-packed-awesome-filled Patrick Rothfuss Novel.Keep writing and keep rocking!

I dunno man, the last bitch that gave me a cake like that was a psychotically evil robot that tried to kill me. :)Clearly, Pat, you rock. And no amount of delays for your book is going to change that.Although, honestly? Yes, you did retroactively ruin my Christmas. Christmas 2007 had been absolutely terrific, but then suddenly on January 17th, it turned out it had sucked after all. ;)Take your time, man, it’ll totally be worth it.

Honestly, Thanks! Unfortunately, you managed to retroactively ruin both Christmas and my birthday (the 16th), but I don’t really mind. Part of the whole getting older thing is supposed to be patience anyway. Just as long as we know that it’s gonna be GREAT, I’m fine with it. And I disagree with Micah. Cake is <>good<>, especially when unexpectedly made for you by someone else. =D

Hey, Pat,Manly fisticuffs, you say? I vote that the Patrick Rothfuss action figure with interactive beard also comes with drunken boxing action fists. That would be so awesome that it would kill people just as swiftly and surely as writing the best goddamn book ever. And one of the fists can actually be a hook, like a pirate.Oh, man, and cake! Are those supposed to be cherries on the picture of the cake? They look like gumballs – and that in no way makes the cake any less awesome. It adds to the awesome. You’re OUT THERE, dude, inventing outlandish cake and not caring what the Man thinks. In conclusion, Pirate Pat + gumball cake = deadly mix of barely contained fury unleashed upon an unsuspecting populace that is just not ready for this next, heretofore unreached level of sheer raw awesomeness.Great Caesar’s Ghost, we’re not ready for this…All the best,Captain JoeP.S: Make the third book good enough to kill, that way we can read it and die happy. T’would be cruel to end it halfway.

I know! The second book can come with a complimentary eye patch! (Or with the Rothfuss ninja beard action figure. But I figure you want that sold separately.)I’m ecstatic the second will be the best ever– well, until book three. I mean, think of the Wheel of Time, if you’ve read it. There was such a long wait for book 10, Crossroads of Twilight, and in the book, nothing important happened! (Yes the Wheel of Time is my prime example of why trilogies are so good.)As for the fisticuffs, if it gets out of hand, you can hit them with the complete manuscript for the trilogy. It’ll be bigger than any book they can throw at you.

I want to lay a late claim to a spot on the “best reader’s ever” list. HA!Seriously, disappointing though it may be, the book will be worth the wait. So I join the chorus (sincerely) of “really, you need the time both for yourself and the book, and we think that’s fine”and thanks for the Tim Powers tip, yours was the final straw in a pile of recommendations that got me to read him. Last Call is outstanding. Thanks for the tip

As soon as you mentioned dangerous levels of awesome.. I laughed. You have to be lying. I can’t believe that there is something with more awesome then me. Seriously.I am sad I didn’t get my comment on your other blog sooner (which I still didn’t finish reading, again, shoot me) so if you at some point read this.. go control + f aweSAM and find it. I rock... actually I lied to you. The Alyson crack made me laugh.. the awesome made me doubt the existence of the universe, sprite and the almighty cheeseburger.School holidays suck.. I get cheeseburger cravings, fulfill them, and end up back at school grumpy and twitching like some kind of crack fiend (though I am a cheeseburger fiend it seems). Now that I am off topic this is a good time to announce to the world that is your fans… I’ll be back ;DPeace<>The aweSAM<>

Your book was the best book I’ve read in a long time, and believe me, I read a lot of books. I would hate to see you rush through the next one instead of giving it the time it needs to make it as good as this one was. As someone who was a huge fan of the Harry Potter series until the last few books, I’ve experienced what rushing to meet a deadline leaves the reader with. Gaping plot holes, dropped story lines, missed opportunities. I’d rather wait than be let down again.

Sh!t… What must I do now? I have to read the book, with the slight chance I’ll die doing so?!Guess I’ll take the change. I’m living on the edge already.Serious Pat, even though I would love to read the second part. I also think that’s it is important to take it easy. So don’t hurry and write that second part so good that my eyes (or one eye, if that idea of eye patch makes it) will pop out wile I’m reading it in awe…And I apologize in advance for my grammar. English isn’t my first language. If you have that time Pat, check: http://patrickrothfuss.hyves.nl/ I’m trying to make you more popular in the Netherlands. I’ll just post what I stated on Amazon.com (as I browse there more often than here):“I knew you’d lie to us about the cake! But as the others have said, don’t worry too much about the deadline. Give yourself time to breathe, watch some celebrity gossip, do some yoga, or just give some lovin’ to your girlfriend. We can wait. Your life can’t.As one perfectionist to another, make sure to treat this book as your baby: well fed and with nothing dirty in its diaper. We’re all rootin’ for ya!”

Pat, just saw the pic at Scalzi’s site. Beautiful, Baby! Anyway, God bless you for worrying about us fans at all over Book #2 after the year you’ve had. Don’t worry about us. Let us worry about you. I’m a mom so I’m very good at worrying. For example…The delay will just give me more time to figure out the perfect thing to send you along with my first edition for you to sign ;) I’ve been worrying about it over for six months already and haven’t decided yet, even though I know I’ve got to do it before the paperback comes out and the epiphenomena (Geez what a great word!) of authorship takes hold of you again. You won’t have time to sign it no matter what awesome stuff I pack into a box! Also, I’m worried now that I know you admire feminists because I’m not a feminist at all. I’m a Bible believing, homeschooling, stay at home mom with three sons in the military. I’m about as far from feminism as you can get! So maybe if you met me you wouldn’t even like me! But you admire geeks too and I’m VERY geeky, and I love your book, so that’s ok. Whew! Besides, you don’t have to like me to sign my book, right? And you seem like the kind of guy who likes everybody. I mean, you said your readers are the best readers ever, and I’m one of your readers, so I’m the best ever! Hey! One problem solved! Then I’m worried you’re going to have to move house just to store all the geeky stuff people are sending you and I don’t want to add to your stress by sending you more geeky stuff. Especially now that you don’t have an office to put stuff in anymore. Unless, of course, it’s really great geeky stuff that anybody would love. Then I think I have an obligation to share it with you, even though you’ll have to find a place to put it. See my dilemma? And THEN I have to decide how many copies of the new cover hardback of NOTW I should buy so I’ll have a matched set when WMF comes out. But I have to save some money for the paperback because I need several copies to loan out to my kids, who are very hard on books. My youngest left a copy of The Deeds of Paksenarion by Elizabeth Moon in a tent once. It got rained on and totally ruined. That was about 8 years ago. We’ve never gotten over it. Every time one of us sends him a book we say “Don’t ruin it. Remember what happened to Paksenarion?” So, see, I’ll have plenty to do between now and April 2009. Rest easy. Not too easy though, you have a book to write! Love, appreciation, smiles, hugs, blessings, and NO WORRIES!

First, to Diane – who said: <>Also, I’m worried now that I know you admire feminists because I’m not a feminist at all. I’m a Bible believing, homeschooling, stay at home mom with three sons in the military. I’m about as far from feminism as you can get! So maybe if you met me you wouldn’t even like me!<>Yes, you are. Feminism is about a woman’s right to CHOICE in how she lives her life. That we all have the right to make the life choices that are best for us rather than someone making them for us. That you have equal rights to be a stay at home mom, as I do to pursue a career outside the home and remain overjoyed to keep my womb occupant free forever and ever. =DI’ve found this explains it best:< HREF="http://tomatonation.com/?p=677" REL="nofollow">Yes, You Are<>To Patrick and Portal fans everywhere – I started laughing as soon as I read the word “cake”.

*chuckle* Don’t promise, just do ;)Write, revise, and try to enjoy as much of the process as possible. My dad wrote a book (not sci-fi/fantasy)…and instantly earned himself entry into what he called “an elite club of authors, consultants, and peers” then found himself inundated with work, speaking requests, article requests, etc…and found that he wasn’t alone in that predicament. Still, he managed to keep his business (as it was what spawned the book in the first place!), and write another book…and loves what he does.My lesson from that – is that when you love what you do, it’ll work out. And you don’t have to make promises to people in order to get it done :)

Well, first of all, sorry if this isn’t properly written, I am not english. Second, after I read The Name of The Wind, I was like “FUCK FINALY”. It’s hard to foccus on reality and books are really the only thing inside my head. Your book took me like two weeks of sleep, as many other magic(al?) books. Your writting is so beautifull it makes me wanna cry and i can’t live without my precious books. Yours was onde of the best, and i«I’ve read A LOT, really A LOT. Your books togheter, when the rest come out, can be better I think than The Black Jewels trilogy and Sevenwaters trilogy, by the amazing Anne Bishop and Juliet Marillier, respectivly. I’m waiting for the second, I hope, before insanity takes me. Thank you.
I hope in books all the dreams of the world
