Confusion Podcast.

For those of you who are interested, here’s a recording of a panel I was on earlier this year out at Confusion. You could consider it a podcast, of sorts. I have to say, it wasn’t my most gripping performance ever, as I was on a panel with a bunch of smart people with some good stuff to say on the subject.

However, to make up for my own lacking, you get the inestimable John Scalzi as moderator. He’s a fun guy to listen to. If you haven’t given his website a lookie-loo, you probably should.

Later all,

pat

Very interesting discussion. I have considered it briefly before, but it is nice to here the thoughts discussed so thoroughly. I have to say after listening that it is still a gray line that I straddle. I personally dislike reading text from a computer screen. Though I do it all the time (I enjoy writing and I am a computer science major), but when I have the choice, I will always read from a book.

No way. Patrick Nielsen Hayden sounds just like James Woods! Ta for the vid link Joe.Good seeing the beard in full colour Pat.Good length at the chin. Properly bushed out at the sides. A beard to be reckoned with.I’m with Jake. The only way I can read, is from a book. It would seriously screw with my eyes, if I had to read a novel from a computer.

Interesting discussion on piracy but I think that the book business will never be replaced and i might be naive but i dont think this will get out of hand. I commute to work from NYC. On the Long Island Railroad, everyone has a book in their hands who is not sleeping. People read in central park, on the subways, all over the place. Again , I dont have the stats but it seems like a far smaller problem than movies/music ripping. But the author does have a right to complain, and if i ever publish, I’ll probably be singing a different tune. And yeah, Hayden’s voice is exactly like James Woods, freaky!

Wow. Okay, first I guess I’ll just state the reason I think the pirating of books hasn’t exactly soared. The quality and mode of consumption of cd’s and dvd’s is the same whether you buy them or download them. Essentially, the song or movie sounds and looks exactly the same (assuming you get a good copy, etc.) and is the same as any other cd when taken from the internet into the physical world. A book is definitely not. Reading online just does not have that instant gratification that all humans are looking for. You can’t see how far you’ve gotten in the book, you can’t mark progress by the turn of each page. Most importantly it does not engage all of the same senses in the same manner as a physical book. A cd is only concerned with hearing and thus is the same whether bought or bootlegged. A dvd concerns sight and hearing, but both are exactly the same in original copies and fakes. The reason is that cd’s and dvd’s were made to be viewed and heard via technology, books were not. Books engage all of the senses (usually excluding taste, though if you’re that into books, I won’t judge you). Simply put, technology cannot engage all of the senses in the same manner as books.Books are a fairly lusty thing, and I don’t believe electronic copies/ripped off versions pose a threat. A person may read a book on the internet, but if they like it they will buy it. It is the same concept of loaning a friend a book that you love. Even if they could access that book again at any time, they want their own copy. We like the feel of those mass produced paper backs, and not even cheap copies off of the nearest laserjet can replace. So if they ever come up with a decent electronic version I can take to the bubble bath, then, and only then, should any published author worry.I’m off to the tub, pirate duckie and NOTW in hand.
