A Glimpse of Things to Come.

I thought I might mention this, on the off chance that any of you might be interested….

What’s this? An anthology of some sort? Nice cover by Dave McKean. Wow. It’s got a story by Tim Powers. Oooh, one by Kage Baker, too. And another by… me?

Honestly, it’s just weird to see my name included on the cover with these other folks.

So… yeah. There I am in a book that will be coming out in a couple months. And no, I haven’t been dicking around, writing other stories instead of working on the second book. You see, the story included here is actually FROM the second book. It’s called “The Road to Levinshir.” It’s an excerpt from “The Wise Man’s Fear.”

So. Looking for an early taste of book two? Look no further.

Enjoy,

pat

Oh, Pat, you shrewd devil!I feel that, in some way I don’t really understand, that you have outfoxed us all. Well-played, Rothfuss, well-played indeed. That lettered edition sounds like something I’d kill for… It’s officially added to my Book List.~Cap’n Joe

Yay! I’m so excited we’ll get a taste of the second book a little early. :)Keep giving us stuff to do though, Pat. Those books you’ve recommended so far sound awesome, and I love hearing the opinion of an author on someone else’s work. Not to mention that The Guild, which is an altogether different breed of kickassery.

This will only hold me over for so long before I have to come kidnap you and have you finish writing Wise Man’s in my basement.

I could kidnap you and you could finish Wise Man’s in the second bedroom of MY apartment, but that would require that you like hot weather, arthritic cattle dogs, and extremely good tacos. >:)Which basically makes writing in Alabama like that movie Secret Window, but with a climate equivalent to the face of the sun. So screw it. I’ll just wait semi-patiently. I would rather not come home to a puddle of Yankee in my study. How do you even get that out of the carpet?

Is this the same story that was in the Writers of the Future book?

Here is what you need to do to finish your book ahead of schedule:< HREF="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRuNxHqwazs" REL="nofollow"> This<> and < HREF="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-3qncy5Qfk" REL="nofollow"> This<>

Important question:Will there be any dramatic spoiler’s gleaned from reading the Road to Levinshire? I had thought to find it and read it but then the hampster in my head kicked it into overdrive and a thought popped into my head….”whats if i read the short and find out some life altering event and it ruins the trilogy for me” so i abondoned the idea. Please let us know before we ruin the only thing we have to look forward to in our lives (book 2 the wise man fears)thanks, sean

kickassery- my new favorite word.Because I work as a reference librarian I can’t help myself:It is the same story as the one in L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Vol 18:http://www.amazon.com/Ron-Hubbard-Presents-Writers-Future/dp/1592120520/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1212441757&sr=11-1There are no spoilers, it features Kvothe, and is wonderful in every way. It is also the story that got Pat started in publishing. See Pat’s bio for more info: http://www.patrickrothfuss.com/content/author.aspSubterranean: Tales of Dark Fantasy is available on Amazon:http://www.amazon.com/Subterranean-Tales-Fantasy-William-Schafer/dp/1596061839/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212440999&sr=1-1I have no suggestions for yankee puddle removal.

Kip – OMG, I want some Rawberry Manana Powerthirst in my face right now. *lmao*I have no idea what the melting point of Wisconsinites is, but let me put it this way: I’ve been living in Alabama my whole life, it’s only June 2, and already it’s so hot I think skinny-dipping in Alaska sounds like a fantastic idea. Getting in my car after work felt like walking into the Vietnamese jungle.

Advice to Pat: Stay away from ‘bama, dude. All this talk about melting Yankees has got my skin crawling. We don’t want a puddle of Yankee, a puddle of Pat, or a puddle of anything else!

You have no idea how much I just freaked out.Seriously. If anyone had been in the room, they probably would’ve died from the sheer excitement radiating from me.But right now I don’t have the money.BUT I WILL, DAMMIT!Kip… did you seriously tell Pat to drink Powerthirst?? DO YOU WANT THE WORLD TO BE COMPLETELY DESTROYED?!

I could only begin to imagine the epicness we would have with Pat Power-writing and runing around like Kenyans. Not to mention 400 Mini-Pats.

Seriously, Kvothe rocks my socks. I’m not even an uber-fantasy fan or anything, but The Name Of The Wind is making me reconsider my position. *fan sigh* I’m torn between equal parts glowing admiration and intense jealousy. Pat, your characterization is so flawless it makes me ill.Not really. I heart you. I think I’m officially a minion at this point.

400 Mini-Pats… Wow. The gravity of that awesomeness would probably cause the earth to collapse into itself.Pat: Stay away from Alabama AND Powerthirst. If not for your sake, then for ours.

Okay, my name is Angela, and I am a serious book addict. I JUST finished your book in record time. Risking the danger of bringing up the Harry Potter controversy again, I’ll just say that I have read no other book besides the ones in the hp series as fast as yours. It does indeed have amazing “kickassery,” and I’m still geeking out about it.On an almost entirely separate note, it is extremely… BAH, I don’t even know a word for it, but I love the fact that music is so deep a part of Kvothe. I wished nothing but the blackest death and the greenest seepage for Ambrose when he broke the lute. In fact, it made me hold my flute very close for a bit.Randomly switching subjects again, my AP teachers have instilled a love of great literature that is hard to quench along with a childhood passion for fantasy. So, thank you from the freaking bottom of my heart for saving me for a bit from… *shudder* let’s just call it less pleasant writing. So, maybe “I [have] talked too much…said too little,” but the universe you have created is truly awe-inspiring (465). Sorry about the proper quotation… old habits and all that… Anyway, thank you for the great book, and as some measure of recompense, I won’t describe to you the hellish day it helped me through.

well said Angela. It’s truly one of those books that will stand the test of time. I’ve never bugged my friends and family so much to read a book in my life. at the moment my girlfriend is reading it. She’s truly loving it and it looks likely that i’ll have to buy another copy!!The name of the wind is quite simply the best book i’ve ever read. thanks Pat.

My family doesn’t read. It pisses me off. One of these days, I swear I’m going to slip a Bible cover over the Name of the Wind and condemn them for not reading it.
