Titillation

So today I had a phone conversation with some people. It was a conversation with cool implications for the future. It’s a long way from anything certain, and I can’t tell you what it was about, but I can tell you my girlfriend’s reaction….

When I finished with said conversation, I called Sarah and told her about it.

Then she said, “That’s so exciting that I’m going to puke.”

As you can see, I’m not the only wordsmith in our relationship.

In lieu of cool news. (That’s a fun sentence, by the way. You should say it out loud. Do it.)

Here’s a photo someone sent me of the Italian version of the book, on its home turf. Note the awesome castle in the background.

Later all,

pat (From a crappy hotel computer in Indianapolis.)

I’m going to guess that the words “movie,” and/or “option” and/or “deal” figured into your phone conversation. And if that’s so, I find it somewhat more exciting than the recent news that Universal has just made a deal for a Wheel of Time movie.

I going to go with “movie rights” as well since “Book 2 released in September 2008” is just too much to ask for.

wheel of time movie??I think they’re biting off more than they can chew with that…And is it to early to congratulate Pat on whatever his news contained? If not, consider it done.

I’m reading your book again now. It makes me so very sad that April 2009 is far away. I know that has nothing to do with your post. It could even have started with “In lieu of cool news” just to show that I read both your post and the parenthetic notation within the post. So really I’m just being lazy. But in all fairness, I’ve waited to post this comment until you blogged again. Friday night? Yeah, dedication.Re: movie, I don’t know. I love your book as a book. The writing makes it magnificent. My “levels of book greatness” ranges from:Stumble on words | Can’t see what’s happeningRead words | Can picture the actionRead sentences | Can hear the charactersRead paragraphs | Can see, hear, and the book has a soundtrack<>Name of the Wind<> is one of the few books that generates its own soundtrack when I’m reading it. I’d hate to see this turn into yet another movie trying to cash in on a good book because hollywood is out of original ideas. On the other hand, it could only generate more readers for your book. Besides, given the right director and cast, it could be one of the best movies. Oh, let’s go for hyperbole. EVER!BTW – for the “who would act in the movie were the book to get signed” post from a year or so back, I have someone for Denna now. Some say I’m slow…Denna – Madeline Zima

In a couple weeks I’m going to go to leave my comfortable North Carolina home to spend a semester in Florence, Italy. I’m scared and worried, wondering what the hell I was thinking signing up for such a thing as I barely know two words in Italian, and I’m not counting Italian pastas because it wasn’t funny even when I did.But now for some reason knowing that I might get a chance to get the Italian version of your book with the weird-crazy cover without having to do overseas shipping, I feel a little less ill. I take in what little comforts you can.

Magnificent. “This really cool thing happened that I can’t tell you about…OH LOOK A PHOTO OF MY MY BOOK IN ITALY!” I was distracted, really! Now, just shivering in anticipation. Good luck. I hope whatever it is, it is something you want.

Holy crap, Larry! Wheel of time optioned? You, sir, just made my day and deserve a medal.“In lieu of cool news.”Whoo…oooh.Although, if for a moment I were to reserve my excitement, a Wheel of Time movie would have to cut out soooo much. Still, it’d be awesome to see the golden Dragon tattoos on Shia LaBeouf’s forearms. For Shia is the only actor man enough for Rand al’Thor…… …I just ruined the internet, didn’t I?~Cap’n Joe

“So today I had a phone conversation with some people.”“Then she said that’s so exciting that I’m going to puke.”This could end up hurting my head if I start thinking it’s a movie. Teasing your readership. Cruel. Cruel. Cruel. Go on tell us. You might burst if you don’t! “In lieu of cool news. (That’s a fun sentence, by the way. You should say it out loud. Do it.)”Aye. It’s fun. However, it does not work in a Michael Cain accent, but it does come into its own when you introduce a little Connery and an eyebrow lift. Sweet.

Guys, guys, let’s not run away with ourselves here. It might not be a movie deal.It could be a <>video game<> deal.…or it could be an invitation to write something not Kingkiller Chronicles related with or for someone/thing really cool. Like an invitation to submit a script for Joss Whedon’s new TV show.

I’m probably going to ruin the surprise, but I’m going with table top game and the big news. If I guess right, it’s because there was talk of this at the session at the Indy library on Thursday night. That would still be awesome. What would be even more awesome would be an MMO…it may be the only thing to break my World of Warcraft addiction. :)

OK, here’s my guesses:tv mini-series (allowing more time for the plot); comic-book adaptation, aka, graphic novel; someone’s producing statuettes or action-figures of the characters.— Amy E.

I said it out loud. Then I laughed at myself, and had to sit in embarrassment as I was pointed and laughed at by my own subconscious.A movie would be totally badass. But theres all that worrying that it will totally 100% suck compared to the book. :::Cough Harry Potter. cough cough Eragon cough cough cough 1984 Sneeze::The possibility of a graphic novel, that makes me fan-girl squee. A table top game-wicked. An audio book, TV-mini series-all sweet.

Hmmmm. I don’t know, but I think I am gonna lean towards the “getting to write something cool in someone elses playground” Maybe Joss Whedon, but I am hoping for Doctor Who. Seriously. A Rothfuss Dr. Who ep. would rock!

I just wanted to make a quick note. A couple new readers have just become aware of you coming to dragon con. Previously on the fence deciding to go or not, and finding you on the guest list just pushed us over for the first time into the geeky gooey goodness that is DragonCon. Glad to hear you’re coming to the con and hope Atlanta is enjoyable. Go to the aquarium if you have time. We have sea otters.

If the talk is about a movie/show, I really hope you are involved in the production process. At the least, I hope you get to be involved with the finding a director part (or maybe it IS a director who called and wants to make the book into a movie?). Please don’t just sells the rights off to some company and let them do w/e they want with it. I can’t imagaine you would do something like that though. To the other stuff … the first Harry Potter movie rocked IMO. Sure it wasn’t some masterpiece, but I felt it did a wonderful job of capturing the feel of the first book.WoT movie? That’s interesting. I think it will be the first time I am actually glad that all the little details are removed. WoT is a classic example of too much writing hampering the story (obviously just my opinion). To the person who pointed out the SoT trailer, thanks. I had been following the development of the series but obviously I am a little behind. I have to say though, the trailer left me a little dissapointed. Still, there is hope…we’ll just have to wait for Nov 1!

Actually, an inside source just revealed that the Navy’s next-generation aircraft carrier, currently under construction at Northrop Grumman, will be christened the USS Patrick Rothfuss. Rumor has it, this $8 billion project is being nicknamed “The Kvothe.”

I just hope they also keep the record-skipping repetitive character features out of the movie as well. *cough* Pulling on hair braid as the only way to show a character is angry. *cough*As for the news Pat, I honestly hope it’s not a “movie rights” and it’s more of a “HBO/Showtime rights” would much rather see my books on screen in miniseries format than tried to cut into 3 hours.Done well with a narration like a Dexter-like narration. Yeah that makes me drool.Though I would be just as happy with NOTW: the breakfast cereal or NOTW: the flame thrower. Ahhhhhh.

Oh no! Please let it be something along the lines of a huge convention thrown in your honor, or discovering that you’re about to win some sort of incredibly awesome book award that will require you to give a speech to the public. OR! That you’ll be on TV…ooo…OR! That Joss Whedon heard of your caveman-hate-love and decided to invite you to feature in his new series in some way!Anything BUT a movie. Anything.

This has nothing to do with your post…although if, indeed, the words “movie” and “deal” were featured in your conversation then that’s awesome!I just wondered if you were aware that < HREF="http://http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog/667/Reader-Mail" REL="nofollow"> Brandon Sanderson lists you as one of his favourite fantasy writers<> and as somebody who he would have liked to see complete <>Wheel Of Time<> is he hadn’t been picked. That is all. I’ll stop taking up space on your blog now.

Wheel of time movie, so will this just basicly be a collection of badly rehashed plots? Wow, thats so wonderful that I might just want to set all of the movie industry on fire. Here are my guesses:1. Sara is pregnant and you decided to kname it Kvothe.2. The fashion industry has decared your beard the new “Hot style of autumn 2008”, all the actresses and actors are scrambling to get one.3. Your life is being turned into a movie, You will be played by both Will Smith and Sean Connery simultaniously, to fully encompass the full awesomeness.4. You found out Heath Ledger is not really dead, and will be playing kvothe whenever you book becomes a movie.5. Due to some random rift in time a T-rex appeared outside your house, after thuroughly taming it the government decided to allow you to keep it.6. You have been declared a natural resource, Russia is attempting to claim mining rights.7. Atlantis has been found, you have been declared King of it.8. God called, He asked if your refrigerator was running….
