IAQ – Kvothe’s Alignment.

I get a lot of fanmail, which means I get a lot of questions.

The questions that get asked a lot, I put into the FAQ, for obvious reasons.

But there are other questions too. It’s occurred to me that some of these questions, while infrequent, might still intrigue or amuse folks.

So here’s the first of these. Not part of the FAQ. More like the begining of an IAQ, if you will….

With the shape of an “L” on my forehead, here’s my question: What would you say is Kvothe’s alignment (i.e. ad&d terms)

[Name withheld for reasons of not wanting the person to die of geeky shame]

Oh yeah. Total Geek question.

Here’s my total geek answer: I didn’t even have to think about it. Chaotic good.

Though honestly, now that I pause for consideration, it’s possible he’s neutral good. He doesn’t work actively against the system, he just doesn’t feel constrained by it.

Now, of course, you’ve got me thinking about everyones’ alignment.

Some are easy, like Master Lorren: Lawful Good.

Some are hard, like Elodin. Chaotic neutral? True neutral? He’s just too complicated to put in a box like that. Plus there’s a lot of him you haven’t seen yet. I honestly don’t know where I’d put him overall.

The more I think about it, the fact that I can’t fit most of the characters into little AD&D boxes makes me feel good. It shows that they’re more complex than that. I hope that complexity isn’t just inside my head. I’d like to think that y’all get to experience it too….

Pop quiz:

What is Pat’s alignment?

Where does Bast fall on the Kinsey Scale?

What is Denna’s Myers-Briggs Personality Type?

Would Elodin pass a Thematic Apperception Test?

How many questions does it take to clear Lorren on the Voight-Kampff?

Extra Credit:

If Auri were a tree, what kind of tree would she be?

Geekily yours,

Most awesome post ever.Except for the posts that featured me heavily.<>What is Pat’s alignment?<>Chaotic Good: http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb193/aredhel72/RolandChaoticGood.jpgT’is the most badass.<> Where does Bast fall on the Kinsey Scale?<>On the face of this question, the answer seems apparent, yet my understanding of Bast is that if its got a beating heart and a good head of hair… well, fair game. Top post Pat. My answers are thus. What is Pat’s alignment? I’ve not played any D&D, but Baldur’s gate sounds similar, so I’m going for lawful good. I’ve not heard about you breaking any laws for the greater good, so alas, the Robin Hood status of chaotic good does not suit. (Unless of course, you have chained yourself to Washington’s gates to protest the rights of bearded men who wish to wear pink earmuffs.)Where does Bast fall on the Kinsey Scale? Equally heterosexual and homosexual. He aims to please. What is Denna’s Myers-Briggs Personality Type? Extraversion, Sensing, Thinking, Judging. If Katharine Cook Briggs had to give her a job in WW2, I feel she would have made a perfect spy. Would Elodin pass a Thematic Apperception Test? I fear for the person who tried to give him the test. They would inevitably end up jumping off a roof. How many questions does it take to clear Lorren on the Voight-Kampff? Harry ford would have to shot him.If Auri were a tree, what kind of tree would she be? She would be a tree in Le Jardin de Monet, les iris. Marky out.

I love it when geeks gather and try to put something into AD&D terms. Personally I think it is as valid a philosophic argument as how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. All hail the geeks!

I think Pat is, like Kvothe, neutral good.Bast=2 on the scaleDenna = ENFJI had no idea what the thematic apperception test was, and having now read about it, I still don’t understand it. I am not sure Lorren could be cleared on V-K.Auri would be quaking aspen.

If I’m going to indulge my not so inner geek today, I need to know what the prize will be for answering correctly (guess what my Myers Briggs Personality Type is, lol). If there’s cake to be had, then I can definitely be persuaded to slack off the chapter I should be rewriting and have some fun. In the meantime, Marky and I seem to be of the same mind.

ok, this just sucked me in:Pat’s alignment:Going for Neutral-Good or Chaotic-Good… which type helps ducks cross the street?Bast on the Kinsey Scale:No higher than a 1, I think. I understand where the people saying 2 and 3 are coming from, but it’s also clear that Bast really loves women. Just look at how he tries to explain Kvothe to Chronicler at the end — women are how Bast understands the world ;-)Denna’s MBPT:ESTP. Quote from wiki: According to Keirsey, ESTPs, or “Promoter Artisans”, are the most adept among the types at manipulating other people.Elodin passing a TAT? ooooooh that would be fun.Lorrin on the Voight-Kampff? Depends how far down the list the questions about book burning are!And tree-Auri…. I like the quaking aspen that jessica said earlier.thanks for the fun!

<>What is Pat’s alignment?<>Lawful good? Chaotic good? Either way, you’re not neutral. I mean, I don’t actually play dungeons and dragons, so I’m basing this off Wikipedia, but the baby duck escort thing? Come on, people.<>Where does Bast fall on the Kinsey Scale?<>I’d probably say a 0, honestly. I mean, he seems pretty girl-crazy to me, but I did read that blog where you said you found that fanfic thing of him and Kvothe [which messed with my head a little, btw] so maybe a 1?<>What is Denna’s Myers-Briggs Personality Type?<>I’d probably categorize Denna as ESTP, [extraversion, sensing, thinking, perception] but she’s so complex that there are exceptions to every single one of these things. <>Would Elodin pass a Thematic Apperception Test?<>The day Elodin passes a Thematic Apperception Test is the day someone gets Lorren to laugh.<>How many questions does it take to clear Lorren on the Voight-Kampff?<>Well, I hate to quote harry potter on here [don’t shun me, okay?] but remember when Hermione says that Ron has “the emotional range of a teaspoon?” Yeah… <>Extra Credit:If Auri were a tree, what kind of tree would she be?<>Auri would be a Japanese cherry tree. What is Pat’s alignment? Chaotic Good. Especially based on Cap. Joe’s pics. Where does Bast fall on the Kinsey Scale? Gonna have to go w/ the majority. He’s a 2. What is Denna’s Myers-Briggs Personality Type? Only she knows. Would Elodin pass a Thematic Apperception Test? Elodin is not taking the TAT. Elodin is using his answers to test you. How many questions does it take to clear Lorren on the Voight-Kampff? Two. One to ask about the turtle. One for him to ask if the turtle is a candle-carrying scoundrel. And depending on the proctors answer to question 2 he would pass or fail. If Auri were a tree, what kind of tree would she be? Auri is the one little Elm tree that managed to survive Dutch Elm disease.

Auri is the tree by my house that you always want to sit under but is in my neighbors yard, so you have to be careful, quiet and if caught polite.I don’t know what kind of tree it is either, and i think that also fits for Auri.

Oh, it’s good to be a geek. I get all the references. However, since I am not the first to post a response, I cannot, in all seriousness, answer the pop quiz. So here are my answers without any seriousness:<>What is Pat’s alignment?<>Bearded – Vertical. However, a habit of eating at the Steak-n-Shake could change this to a more horizontal alignment.<>Where does Bast fall on the Kinsey Scale?<>Given that the Kinsey scale doesn’t really take into account the existence of the Chandrian and that NOTW is not Bast’s sexual diary, I would have to answer this as: 3 + <>i<>10<>What is Denna’s Myers-Briggs Personality type?<>NOYDB!<>Would Elodin pass a Thematic Apperception Test?<>Your use of the word ‘pass’ reveals your own desire to to be grouped with ‘normal’ people who ‘pass’ TATs while you would regard those with different perceptions as ‘failures’. Think about your motives for asking this question.<>How many questions does it take to clear Lorren on the Voight-Kampff?<>How many electric sheep are allowed into the Archives?(I also agree with Marky that Lorren is in danger of getting shot.)<>Extra Credit<><>If Auri were a tree, what kind of tree would she be?<> The tree that few people notice and is highly connected through the underground: an Aspen. (OK, that answer was somewhat serious.)

    1. Tough, as I clearly don’t know you at all, but I’d have to put you as Neutral Good- Chaotic doesn’t seem to fit your role as an educator (no matter how eccentric), or close familial bonds. If there were such a thing as quarter alignments I’d have you as a chaotic/neutral 2xgood blend.2. Just because he’s pretty doesn’t mean he wants to star in a yaoi. Bast=03. i think he’d tell a beautiful tale (that had absolutely nothing to do with the pictures), stories that shatter the mind of the listener with their truth, then place the gibbering psycho-analyst in the Rookery. Is that a pass? I guess riding him naked through Imre like a little pink pony is a fail then.4. Book or Movie? in the book, the machinery was much more accurate, and by that scale it would know that Lorren is in fact a replicant at question 7.xcredit- Auri is quite clearly a walking tree. She puts up roots wherever it is convenient and puts down new ones when she needs to leave. Also, few believe/know she exists.

I’d say Chaotic Good is spot on for Kvothe. Two good examples of deliberate subversion of the rules that I can think of: misusing sympathy on Master Horne to make his point and actively searching for a way into the Archives after being banned. Also, Master Lorren strikes me as Lawful Neutral rather that Lawful Good. Unbending dedication to the rules is obvious, but he never really acts in a way that strikes me as good or evil. It’s more like he’s there just to watch over his Archives and enforce the rules, no matter what the intention.

@jonI thought that after i was done writing my justification. I wanted initially to say she was a silver maple that put out roots on top of hard soil, vulnerable yet resilient, only tenuously connected to the ground, then i read about walking trees and I thought “man, those are cool!” so put that in.I guess i should stick to my first… oooh! Pat, Are you going to reply with what you thought the answers were?My replies:Pat’s alignment: Chaotic-awesome(eg. Strongbad “do you use your powers for good or for awesome”)Bast:2 or 3Elodin:I had to look up this test. I suspect that he would pass if he wanted to, and fail if he were being honest. If this were played out I would expect him to game the test and then walk out of the testing room and say something very disturbed.Voight-Kampff: Do not know enough to sayAuri: A laurel treeI’ve always thought “nymph” when I thought of Auri. I think something drastic must have happened to make her like she is. She is not cold as Daphne, but she is beautiful and elegant.Like bay leaves (that come from the laurel tree) and are best simmered into food but inedible, she has a purity that is something everyone could gain from interacting with, but which comes from a a way of living that you would not want to adopt yourself.

Okay, for the last one, the tree that sprang to mind right away was a weeping willow. I think they way her hair is always described as kind of like a floating halo, I thought of the sweeping branches of the willow. Which is ironic, because Kvothe’s flower is a willow blossom. Hmm…is there some sort of foreshadowing of book two in this? I hope so, I am dying of terminal curiosity about Auri!

    What is Pat’s alignment?
Chaotic Good… I’d imagine something close to Kvothe’s.
Where does Bast fall on the Kinsey Scale?
A 3? Seems like he might be curious about anything on two legs. Or with more than two legs. Or less than two legs. Pansexual isn’t strictly Kinsey Scale, but could potentially fit (plus, I just enjoy the “Pan-”/Satyr/Woodland/Fey thang…). I wonder how Bast would evaluate himself on the Genderbread Person…
What is Denna’s Myers-Briggs Personality Type?
Would Elodin pass a Thematic Apperception Test?
Not that you really “pass” the TAT, but I suppose Elodin would start off with wildly absurd, symbolic, and seemingly unrelated stories. By the end, he’d be analyzing the psychologists. Possibly one clinician would have broken into tears on Elodin’s shoulder whilst Elodin patted his back and sniffed him comfortingly.
How many questions does it take to clear Lorren on the Voight-Kampff?
Book or movie version? I guess it wouldn’t matter if you knew the right question to ask…. For instance, “What do you do when students are toasting marshmallows next to your oldest scrolls?” might clear generally cool, impassive Slow Lorris on the first round.
If Auri were a tree, what kind of tree would she be?
Fall Witch Hazel? Graceful, slim branches and wispy, pale yellow flowers that blossom unexpectedly in the Fall, brightening up the winter. They also attract songbirds, and Witch Hazel extract can be used as a healing remedy. I could also see her as a willow sapling or weeping pussy willow, but there’s just so much willowing going on in the books already. Or maybe she’s a tree that has yet to be discovered.

Though Chaotic Neutral is also an option.

      Bast–a 3, yes.

      Denna is INFJ.
