Podcast – Liquid Wierd

I’m planning a blog about the wierd world of fanfic, but it’s taking a while.

So to tide you over, here’s a podcast that I did while I was off at Dragoncon.

Later,

pat

Pat, your beard is a vast achievement.Dresden Files is required reading ’round these parts. The word verification thing spelt my last name today – the internet is watching me…

Hey, hey Pat. I just finished re-reading The Name of The Wind. I have a theory, Is Bast Denna? I know, it sounds ridiculous but i just can’t help but question, he seems overly concerned, protective and feminine for a dude-friend…Am i right?Good Mornin’ Cap’n Joe–love you vlog reviews by the way.

    Good evening, Malikelm.Much appreciated.

Cap’n, what do you think of my little theory there? Any merit in that little thought perhaps?

Too early to tell, my friend. A lot of story to go, promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep, and all of that…. The idea has merit, yet my gut says no. From what I understand of Bast, he is very much enamoured with young, fresh-faced farm girls. To suggest that this is a mere façade with undertones of liberal lesbianism, is both awesome, and yet, unlikely. It’s one more theory than I have though. I haven’t the foggiest where Pat’s going, but I can’t wait to find out.I definitely agree there’s more to Bast than meets the eye, however, and that he has his own agenda (possible more than one).

True but a particular scene keeps rolling in my head.In the end of the book Chronicler asks Bast what was in it for him? What was he getting from all this?Bast’s reply;“…i just want my Reshi back…”So i guess we are in quite the perdicament. Is Bast gay or is Denna lesbian? Hmm? the only way to keep things straight ironically is to give a little twist and wonder if they are actually the same person? Maybe Denna was never a Women? She does have a Past, that much is learned at this point. Also, Denna is, as Kvothe says, different from any other women…Another thought, when Kvothe asked Diana if her name was Dennathe girl he met a few years back). Denna’s reaction was that Denna was just a disguise she wore at the time…maybe she wasn’t just being a hurt young women? What say you? Please make assumptions. Wonder. It’s ok, i swear.

I’ll be the first to eat my hat if you’re right, dude. But I think Bast is just… Bast. He has his own agenda, as we see it, to have Kvothe remember he <>is<> Kvothe. Whether or not that’s misguided, or necessary, he does seem to be motivated by that most terrible of things… love.Denna, on the other hand, I could never understand. She is far too elusive – and her fate is uncertain.Heh, hoping for the best.Time will tell either way, Malikelm. Awesome discussing it with you, mate.

Truly i am amazed at you content. You seem more than capable to wait.Isn’t it maddening?Since you obviously don’t jump at conclusions–heh probably all that investigator reading you’ve been doing with the Dresden Files? It’ll make a sherlock out of you yet.How about you if you throw a few sugestions at book reads based on these characteristics; not in a modern day set, “no elves with bows”, and please, please, no dragons–not in the same sense that a dozen other writers have written them anyway.I feel like i have read all that there is to read.Oh, by the way, you should really check out the MISTBORN trilogy by a mister Brandon Sanderson–if you haven’t already that is.

It is an arabic cultural characteristic that a beard is a man’s pride just as much as the mane is a woman’s beauty. Islamically though it is shunned upon for a man to shave his beard completely off–trimming and taming it is fine–just not completely. The scholars usually let the beard grow naturally in an attempt to follow the ways of the Prophet of islam(muhamed). That is wht Pat. Im a Religion major.

The thing I liked hearing the most out of this interview was that you do not plan on restating major plot points continuously “in case we forget”. That is something that has always bothered me about a lot of series. I’ve always wondered if authors think that people didn’t read the first 5 books and just picked up the 6th and didn’t want them to be compeletely lost. Anyone who does that deserves to be completely lost in my opinion. I’m glad I won’t have to skim the first 4 chapters of your next book.

I heard the next book is already done and printed and he is just pushing back the release date one more day every time someone asks him about it.

Pat, love the book and the beard. Just thought that I would let you know that you spelled “weird” wrong on the title of this post. I’ll let it slide this time.

“The thing I liked hearing the most out of this interview was that you do not plan on restating major plot points continuously ‘in case we forget.'”Honestly, I think most authors do that for their own benefit. I can imagine that getting into the “groove” of writing a sequel would be easier if you recap the salient parts of the story thus far. Just an idea.

Interesting stuff as always Pat.As far as the beard goes, I would direct you towards the thoughts of one William Shakespeare. “He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than a man.”

Malikelm,In the begining of NOTW Bast specifically mentions he has seen Denna, and coments that her nose is slightly crooked or some such. I think this implies that he is definately not Bast. Plus, there is no evidence that Denna is a fae of any kind and Bast definately is.Just my 2 cents-

I really enjoyed the beard discussion. However, fantasy authors aren’t the only iconoclasts that are known for facial hair. Behold these beards. http://www.comcast.net/music/bestbeards/slideshow/view/Enjoy!September 16, 2008 12:01 AM
