Hello everyone,
This is just a quick note to let you know that I’m back from my trip to California and that the quiet here on my blog doesn’t stem from the fans out there killing me and selling my furry pelt on e-bay.
It was a great time. A lovely break from my current lonely snowbound writing existence. I played board games, hung out with rocket scientists, and got to have a Jamba Juice with Felicia Day.
Yes. That’s right. A Jamba Juice. I was pretty excited, let me tell you.
But before you go wishing you were me, be aware that I paid dearly for my decadent weekend. I was trapped in Minneapolis all Sunday due to Northwest Airline’s asshattery. Monday, hours after returning home, I was brought low by a terrible plague. Don’t ask for details, but know that I have only today recovered enough to crawl to my computer, check e-mail, and bask in the healing glow of Facebook.
More soon,
pat

I hate being sick, i have been sick lately as well, and it is always very sucky. I think its cause i live in south texas where we have yet to have a winter just a couple of days where a front comes in and it gets really cold for a few hours. :( and ive yet to have a Jamba Juice or hang out with a rocket scientist for that matter. So sad so sad…..oh but i envy you and your life. Hanging out with Felicia Day in such a casual way. Ever think you would be where you are now? hmmmm…intresting question to pose to oneself. well, hope for a swift and decent recovery :D
I saw you were hanging out with Felicia + scientists on her Twitter. I was very jealous of her! But I guess I’m also jealous of you for getting to hang out with her. Too much cool.>>(btw, get well soon!)
Sorry Pat, I can’t get that excited till you Come to Pittsburgh, and then can tell everyone that you hung out with Kip and Jesus. >>(teehee, my Word Verification in “siness” it sounds like a dirty woman…)
You always come down with a dreadful Con related crud. You may have a serious allergy to public gatherings. As a suggestion, you may want to invest in some heavy duty anti-bacterial hand stuff to use and stop letting the con-freaks touch you and breathe into your space. You don’t know me orr anything, but I do go to Dragon-Con every year and anti-bacterial hand stuff has saved me from the 4 day deathwatch that used to follow every year’s event. Good luck :)
It seems all too often, dear Pat, that you catch a sickness. And that makes me a-frightened. I mean, I don’t wish you any harm or illness, but I crave the completion of my story. Just like GRRM. He’s getting older and he’s still got loads to do with his epic. And Robert Jordan…>Drink all the juice you can, Pat, and do whatever it takes to stay above the weather. If that means no Chinese or Mexican food, …, well, honestly I think we’re just a fickle folk who would sacrifice many things for some enchiladas or lo mein.>>WV: qaktpdf–When ducks use an Adobe file, they save their documents as this file extension.
I agree about the Northwest airlines ass-hattery. My girlfriend flew with them this month and she got stuck in Detroit overnight. No employees would direct her to shuttles for the hotel so she stayed in the terminal by herself. Customer service was awful, AND they lost her bag for 3 or 4 days. Hope you feel better!>-Andrew S
Mmmm the healing glow of Facebook.>I’m glad you’re recovering, and I hope your trip wasn’t totally ruined by the poopy return.
From those of us who live in Minneapolis, It isn’t THAT bad. ;-)>>However, Northwest can Suck it.
I have never heard good things about Northwest. I hope you’re feeling better soon, Pat!
Boardgames! – what are we talking about, here? Are you a BoardgameGeek.com type, Pat?
Oh blast. I am sorry to hear things started down hill Sunday. I feel as though I should definitely apologize for your ordeal in Minneapolis. But as everyone here is healthy, I don’t know what to say about the plague- it must have been that woman from Nevada. She came thinking that you and your beard would glow with holy light and cure her disease….>>Seriously though, sorry the follow up of the trip sucked. :(
No worries, Pat. We kept the Internet on for you until you got back.>>Wow. Felicia Day! I’m jealous.>>As for Northwest, they are hands-down the worst airline out there. I will go to great lengths to avoid flying on them. I’d tell you of the “engine out” scenario we had on one of their flights, but you’d probably never fly again.>>Get well and welcome back to Blogland.
Hi, I don’t really know how to refer to you, something like Master Rothfuss sounds, right, but since everyone calls you Pat around here, I’ll just pretend we’re friends ok?>I’ve just decided to send a message to my favorite writers who have a blog I know and visit often, and you’re one of them (along with Alan Campbell and Adrian tchaikovsky, I haven’t found blogs or sites in which the others are active…). Anyway, I apologize for my ranting to come, as I’m feeling light-headed after doing too many squats and push-ups after months of laying on my bed reading/listening to music/playing video-games/building a story for a book I’d like to write. Anyway, I just want to say that as most people who write comments on your blog or send you e-mails, I loved The Name of the Wind and am looking forward to Wise Men’s Fear. I’d also like to say I adore your blog, have had a dream in which I was going to meet you in a signing session at a mall, but it was just a strategy a gang was using to attract people and steal them, and would love to meet you someday and maybe be cited in your blog as some fan who made you feel good by nearly worshipping you. I don’t really worship you, but I would be pretty awe-struck if I met you… You’re my internet imaginary friend who writes books XD. Anyone who reads this must think I got out of a sanatorium… >Anyway, I forgot what I was thinking…>I wish you have as much sucess with the second book as you had with the first one, hopefully even more.>P.S. Gonna go eat something now and watch Buffy. It seems to me you quite like it, I,ve began watching because my girlfriend wanted me to, but I quite liked it, though I watched part of the sixth season and am now watchin the first one…>P.P.S. Those guys from the sanatorium finally found me, dammit…>P.P.P.S. Sorry for all this ranting and everything, I’m just not feeling too well, maybe it’s the classes-coming-back-fear, or somethin.>P.P.P.P.S I really like post-scriptums… And by the way, I’m not high, if anyone is wondering, as I have never tried anything and have refused to drink any alcoholic beverage even when offered on New Year. I suppose even saying something to Pat on the internet makes me sort of nervous, and thus I speak much non-sense…
stephano,> that was by far the most intereasting comment i’ve read on pat’s blog! (Though i’m with you on the worshiping part.) Go anonymous if commenting makes you nervous, works for me.
Man, to listen to that posting it seems these Con’s are a cesspit of filth and degradation… and now I can’t believe i haven’t been to one!>>And from another MN who fly’s twice a month… never go on North West… i have never heard of anyone using their services and coming away impressed.
You’re back!!! Oh, how I missed my Rothfuss fix :)
Pat have you been training with terrorists lately…? >>http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2146286.ece>>“ANTI-TERROR bosses last night hailed their latest ally in the war on terror — the BLACK DEATH.>>At least 40 al-Qaeda fanatics died horribly after being struck down with the disease that devastated Europe in the Middle Ages. “
Pat,>Unless you are on antibiotics, drink the Opolo. It will mend what ails you. GWS and again, thank you for taking the time to come to California. The audience looked so happy to see you- I know I was.
Hey Pat, good to hear you made it home mostly in one piece!>I’d concur with the suggestions on having a good anti-bacterial detox process for when you travel, in addition I’m sure the large amount of pollen and warmish (80’s) temps threw your system out of whack. Was great to listen to your stories and ramblings and meet some others in the crowd that had the same vibe.>>Being someone who lives in the L.A. area I always try to go out of my way not to point and oogle like a goon if I see someone that I recognize, but it was hard not to do a double take when Felicia showed up.>>Best wishes!>->Pierre
Hang in there big guy! If you need me to rub Vaseline all over your body, i can do that. Just say the word!
@Cecrow>>You think Pat takes a long time to write a novel? You should try playing board games with him! The other players usually have a secondary game going or a movie they can watch while waiting for Pat to plan his strategy. The more complicated the game, the worse it gets. And Pat loves complicated games… (But it is fun seeing him do the “robot dance” planning his RoboRally moves.)
Drat! You mean the furry pelt I bought was a fake? Curses! I paid through the nose for a genuine Pat Rothfuss pelt, but it’s probably just some random hairy guy instead.>>Gotta go stop payment…>>WV:predablo – Bubble gum for predatory animals. Tastes like chicken!
’twas a pleasure hosting you, and we hope you enjoyed enough to consider visiting again! I’m sorry to hear about Northwest’s asshattery, and of the Booksigning deathplague. Feel better soon!
Hi Pat – >> There’s a reason we in the travel industry call it “NorthWorst”. Having won one of your prizes in the fundraiser, I would be HONORED to return the favor (hell, I would do this anyway!) by offering my assistance should ever you travel again… people would be amazed what travel agents can do to help you rebook, back you up, find alternate routings, etc that the gate agents just couldn’t be bothered with. I’ll ping you on FB in case you ever need me… Feel better!!!!!>>Judy
Pat,>>Dont listen the the “hand sanitizer” pundits, that stuff is a scam and has been scientifically proven to NOT work. You might as well just throw the money spent on it down the drain, its a scam so companies like purell can make more $$$$$. >>You are better off just using straight rubbing alchohol, it works better and a LOT cheaper. Same goes with the paper shim things for public toilets, they do nothing except waste more paper.>>I am sorry you got sick visiting us here in California, but we appreciate the visit, it was fun to meet you. Hopefully next time we can go get drunk together =)>>Here is the pic we took:>>http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/sumigo/Patandme1.jpg>>Regards,>>Brandon
Alot of illness is going around. The best ways to avoid it are to hydrate, take vitamins (or eat those vitamins) and exercise. >….>>Pat…are you being healthy?
Hi Pat,>>Amazon.co.jp customer reviews (in Japanese) indicate there’s some issue of “lost in translation”. I’ve been trying to brainwash Japanese readers to love your book. I posted my Japanese review on Amazon.co.jp and my blog.I will continue my effort. Your book deserves to become bigger in Japan. Take care.
Would asshattery be the the correct word? I am thinking it would be more correct (and more fun) to call it asshaberdashery. I do love a good asshat reference and asshaberdashery has such a fun ring to it. >>Anyway – hope you recover well.
Sorry you got sick, Pat. That sucks! But honestly, the Pasadena crowd looked fairly healthy overall – I’d blame it on NW Airlines! They obviously have it in for you so a few well placed germs and…wallah! Seriously, can I bitch for just a quick minute? I was hyperexcited to meet you last week but Borders let you down. They RAN OUT of your book!! Sure, I have a copy at home but didn’t think I could bring it for sigs and me and the husband would’ve felt a wee bit foolish to wait in that big, long line for the opportunity to say “We really liked your book. Really.” So we didn’t get to meet you and that sucked too. On the upside, we left and went to a great soda fountain and had ice cream. But can you tell your people that Borders Pasadena let down some of your fans, tho? Thanks, dude! Hope you recover soon….
I was tired of being out of the loop, so I googled Jamba Juice and just spent the last hour playing Jamba Maze Chase (i.e. Pacman, but with a juice cup). >>If the website alone is this exciting, then I imagine the real thing is worthy of such excite-ZOMG FELICIA DAY!>>Time to watch Dr. Horrible.>>Hope all is well, Pat.>>-joe
WV: extropo; a person who has recently overcome mental illness.>>I hope you’re feeling much better soon Pat!
Yukari,>>Thanks much for speaking up on my behalf. Have you read both versions of the book? If so, what did you think of the translation?>>pat
Pat,>>I haven’t bought the Japanese book, but I read the samples posted on the Publisher’s site. It’s not wrong, but I don’t love it. It lacks the poetic feeling the original has. They used 3 veteran translators, but 2 of them had translated only business/technical nonfictions before your book. That could’ve been a problem. >>However, overall problem stems from the cultural difference(Lost in Translation part), I think. First is the length. Japanese readers are impatient. They complain the story doesn’t become interesting quickly. Partly because they are not reading your beautiful writing. But main reason is that they are used to short novels. I’m a published author myself, and I’ve been asked so many times to make my novels shorter in order to fit into one hardcover book. Unfortunately, the Name of the Wind turned into 3 Japanese hardcovers (Already book 1, book 2, and book 3). That lead to another problem . 3 books of $20- is a big decision to make for your target group. The publisher should’ve made your book to Bunko (small Japanese paperbacks). Also, the Japanese site stopped renewing the content since August last year. The site is incomplete in so many ways. I wonder if they have some financial problem. >>I love the illustration, though. Your book would make a marvelous Manga or Anime.>Is there any inquiry?
OT- >>Pat!>>Why am I getting my cool news from Amazon and not you?!?>>http://www.amazon.com/Name-Wind-Library-Kingkiller-Chronicles/dp/1423389298/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233607257&sr=1-5>>Who is narrating? Is it Simon Jones? Will it be awesome? Did you get any input?>>My head is going to explode!>>Hello, hope you are well btw-
You are my new favorite funny funny little man. Just to let you know. And I am very picky about my funny….>I love your writing and I don’t care how long I have to wait for The Wise Man’s Fear. Just sayin.
